James Marshall Divel
Of Selbyville, formerly of Milford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 19, 2011. He was 96.
He was born in Amaranth, Pennsylvania on September 16, 1914.
Mr. Divel served in the United States military for 27 years. He entered the US Army Air Corp in 1942, and then selected to serve in the US Air Force from where he retired in 1969. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #534 in Harrington since 1975. He had a life long love of playing cards. He frequently played his favorite game of pinochle at the Moose Lodges in Harrington and Camden, the Senior Centers in Harrington and Dover and with family and friends. Mr. Divel won several local championships. He also loved hunting, fishing and tinkering with engines with family and friends in PA, DE and MD.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Lois E. Divel.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Anita E. Eastman; his loving son, Glen Marshall Divel and wife Karen; his grandchildren; Christine C. daCosta and husband George, Paul Marshall Divel and Christopher Glen Divel; his great-grandson, Matthew James Chapin daCosta; his sister, Lena Belle Berkstresser and husband Donald and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
The interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE, 19963.
Kumiko Sato McGinnis
Of Milford, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2010 at her home. She was 82.
Kumiko was born in Japan in 1928 to Ryojiro and Kaneko Sato and was one of six children.
In 1953, she married Reese E. Phillips, now deceased, and remained his wife for 22 years. Kumiko was naturalized as an American citizen in 1956. She later married Frederick McGinnis, living mostly in Rhode Island until his passing in 1996.
She lived most of her life as a homemaker and worked as her children grew. Later in life, she enjoyed the company of friends at the Milford Senior Center especially when line dancing or at the casino.
She is survived by her three sons, Bill Phillips of Salt Lake City, Utah; Edward Phillips of Shelby, NC and James Phillips of Milford; two sisters, Misako Sato and Mieko Kawai, both of Tokyo, Japan; her grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private memorial service.

Robert L. Messick
Of Milford, passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 at Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 72.
Mr. Messick was born on August 6, 1937 in Felton, son of the late David W. and Myrtle Mae (Legates) Messick.
He served with the Delaware National Guard leaving with the rank of Sergeant.
Mr. Messick was employed with General Foods in Dover as a supervisor in the Millwright Shop, retiring after 26 years with the company. From his childhood experience growing up on his father's family farm and later helping out on his father-in-law's farm, he partnered with his son, Rodney, after retirement, in his farming operation which he was active with until his death. He also owned Standardbred horses which he bred and raced.
His love of playing baseball led to his selection in 1956 to the Brooklyn Dodgers Field Team. He also played softball with teams in Delaware. Bob was an avid trap shooter and was the Handicap Champion in Virginia in 1973. He was a member of the Greenbrier Hunting Club.
On a regular basis Bob enjoyed sharing stories and local news over coffee with a group of friends at the Williamsville Store.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Messick was preceded in death by a brother, David "Tiny" Messick; a sister, Sara Mae Wilson and a grandson, Joseph Patton.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Norma L. Messick, a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Yolanda Messick of Lincoln; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ronald Patton of Milford; three brothers, James Messick of Louisville, Kentucky, Paul Messick of Harrington and Richard "Toby" Messick of Felton; two sisters, Mattie Bowman of Greenwood and JoAnn Benson of Milford and three grandchildren, James Patton, Joshua Messick and Jacob Messick.
Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call one hour prior.
Burial will be held in Barratts Chapel Cemetery in Frederica.

James A. Gooden
Of Milford, Delaware, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Milford Center. He was 74.
Jim was born on March 12, 1936 in Milford, son of the late Winfred C. and Laura (Stubbs) Gooden.
Mr. Gooden was self-employed as an owner operator, along with his wife Lora, of Gooden's Floral Shop in Milford for 30 years before his illness. Lora has continued to run the daily operations of the family business in her husband's absence with the pride and quality that customers have grown to rely on for many years.
Jim had a great compassion for cars, especially drag racing and building and repairing engines, from where he earned the title "The Carburetor Man".
He was a member and past master of the Masonic Temple Lodge No. 9 A.F. & A.M. in Milford, a member of York Rite, Nur Shrine and Nur Shrine Mini Corvettes, and a past member of the Milford Lions Club, the Milford Kiwanis Club and the National Guard.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lora A. Gooden, a son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Lisa Gooden of Milton; a daughter, Jayne Gooden and her partner, Carol Powell of Milford; a brother, Joseph W. Gooden of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Amanda Wood, Kelly Gooden and Jackson Powell Gooden and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, July 19, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior. A Masonic Service will start at 11:45 a.m.
Burial will be held in the Milford Community Cemetery on North Walnut Street.
Abbott, Sr., Howard N.
DOVER - Howard N. Abbott, Sr. of Dover, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 86.
He was born on October 23, 1918 in Wyoming, Delaware, son of the late John and Mary Boggs Abbott.
Mr. Abbott was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II.
He began his working career as a farm manager for Goldinger Farms and later joined Wyoming Concrete and retired at the age of 73.
He enjoyed his retirement by spending time with family and friends and attending auctions. He was an avid horseman and enjoyed riding his appaloosa, his favorite horse was his cutting horse "Buddy".
Mr. Abbott started his mornings by gathering with his friends at the Route 8 Hardee's Coffee Club
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Olive Abbott in 1988 and a son Howard Abbott, Jr. in 1989.
He is survived by a daughter Nancy A. Durham and her husband Larry of Dover, two brothers Roland Abbott and his wife Mariene of Camden; Rev. John D. Abbott and his wife Gladys of Elkhart, Indiana, eight grandchildren Kevin Bordeaux and his wife Michelle of Dover, Kimberlee Krempasky and her husband James of Valrico, FL, Amanda Baker of Dover, Howard Abbott III of Dover, Marc Abbott of Fairfield, Iowa, Shawn Abbott of Fairfield, Iowa, Sherry Steele of Dover and Briana Lyons of Dover, 13 great grandchildren and special friends Dorothy Allen of Dover, Judy Mitchell of Georgetown and Kenneth Richards of Wyoming.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
