Bessie E. Sherwood McCracken
FREDERICA - Bessie E. Sherwood McCracken, of Frederica, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center. She was 100 years, 5 months, 11 days old. She was born in Riverside, N.J., to the late Frank and Jennie Kemp.
Besides being a great homemaker, Mrs. McCracken worked as a clerk for Fletchers Package store for many years. She held numerous other jobs including a telephone operator, bus driver, and for Playtex.
Her favorite hobbies included cooking, eating out, and dancing. She even danced on her 100th birthday. She was a great people watcher and enjoyed travelling. She especially enjoyed the cruises she had the pleasure of going on.
She will be remembered as having a bubbly personality with a smile ever present on her face. She was always cool, calm, and collected, and never had a harsh word to say against anyone, and everyone she met genuinely liked her. Her family was her pride and joy and she was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Mrs. McCracken belonged to the Harrington and Milford Senior Centers, Harrington Moose Lodge #534, and a charter member for over 70 years with the Felton Fire Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert "Cherry" Sherwood Jr.; infant daughter, Barbara; brother, Carl Kemp; and sisters, Wilhelmina Hammond, and Rachel Boone.
She is survived by her son, Joseph Sherwood of Felton; daughters, Olive James of Long Neck, Audrey Holloway of Frederica, and Janet Urso of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening. Interment will be in Hopkins Cemetery, Felton.

Holloway, Robert
Robert "Bob" Holloway, of Harrington, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2010, at the Bayhealth - Milford Memorial, he was 86.
Mr. Holloway, who went by the name of Cornelius "Corny" Hobbs early in life, retired as a self employed painter. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his buddies from Harrington. He also was a member of the VFW Post #6921.
He is survived by his loving companion with whom he lived with Shirley Jean Willey of Harrington; and several nieces.
Funeral service will be Friday, April 23, 2010, in the Chapel of Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro, at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952, may be made to defray funeral expenses.

Andrews, Charlotte J.
Charlotte J. Andrews HARRINGTON - Charlotte J. Andrews, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at her daughters home. She was 92.
She was the daughter of the late Edgar and Lillie Jones.
Mrs. Andrews was a homemaker. She loved to cook and grew a beautiful flower garden every year enjoying especially the Iris's and Rose's. She also loved to embroider and do needlework.
She especially loved to be around her family and was very close to them. She enjoyed hearing what was going on in each of their lives, and she will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Andrews; son, Ronald C. Andrews; siblings, Bill Jones, Pauline Jones, Catherine Culver, Betty Wainwright, grandchildren, J. Richard Jr., and J. Wallace II.
She is survived by her son, John R. Andrews of Greenwood; daughter, Cynde P. Eakin of Harrington; daughter-in-law, Shirley Andrews of Greenwood; sister, Esther Higgins of Middletown; sister in-law, Margaret "Peg" Jones of Millsboro; seven grandchildren, Colinda Kay White and husband Doug, Ronica McGovern and husband Dave, Michelle Mitchell and husband Bob, Sherry Chance, Paula Pulcinella, Wayne Eakin and wife Melissa, Matt Eakin and wife Marianna, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 12, 2010, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.

Rothermel, Lindsey Renee
FELTON - Lindsey Renee Rothermel, of Felton, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Christiana Hospital. She was 22.
Lindsey worked as a beautician, and loved spending time with her family, her fiance, and especially her daughter Briannah. She loved family celebrations and dinners. She also loved going to the mall and shopping and spending time on her computer and phone.
She waited anxiously every year for her birthday vacation at the beach with mom and dad and her daughter.
She was greatly loved and will be missed forever.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Mary Evelyn Curry; and great-maternal grandmother, Bessie Burdziak.
In addition her to parents, Debra and Robert Rothermel of Felton, she is survived by a daughter, Briannah Rothermel; sister, Tara Turcotte Leyanna and her husband Timothy; niece and nephew, Katelynn and Connor Brown; grandparents, Harold and Shirley Rothermel, and Henry Nutter; aunts, Sandra Rothermel, and Lisa Rains; fiance, John Warrington; and lifelong friend, Nicole Porter.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Donations can be made to the Felton Bank, P.O. Box 266, Felton, DE 19943, for the Lindsey Rothermel Memorial Fund to make provisions for her daughter Briannah.

Abbott, Mary Beth
Mary Beth Abbott, 47 MILFORD - Mary Beth Abbott, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 47. She was born in Seaford, a daughter of Sharon H. Workman of Lincoln, and William E. Sanders of Baltimore, Md.
Mary Beth was a school bus driver for over 23 years for the Milford School District.
In her spare time, she loved to garden, bowl, and visit flea markets as both a buyer and seller. She made and sold lids for Longaberger baskets and sold them all over the world. Even through her sickness, she managed to keep herself busy.
She will be remembered as a terrific wife and wonderful mother and friend.
Mary Beth was very active in the Jaycees on both the state and local level. She held every office in the Milford Jaycees, including past president. On the state level, she served on the Governors Board.
Mary Beth was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents, Albert and Myra Bradley; maternal grandfather, Marshall Henry Hastings; grandmother, Mary Ellen Bradley Hastings Wix; step grandfather, John Leon Wix; and stepfather, Fred Albert Workman.
Survivors include her loving husband of 28 years, James "J.J." E. Abbott Jr. of Milford; son, Jamie E. Abbott III of Milford; brothers, Robert E. Smith of Smyrna and William Sanders of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Marsha Smith of Lincoln and Nancy Krystkiewicz of Baltimore, Md.; aunt, Elizabeth Ann Morriss of Chestertown, Md.; her boxer dogs, Yankee and Sarge whom she loved dearly, and followed her everywhere she went; and numerous extended family and friends.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bayhealth Medical Center Foundation/Milford Memorial, 640 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.

Louise E. Chalmers, 74
HARRINGTON - Louise E. Chalmers, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010, in the Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 74. Born March 29, 1935 in Milford to immigrant parents, the late Emil and Elizabeth Gerardi, Louise grew up on their family farm in Harrington.
She graduated from Greenwood High School in 1953, where she met and fell in love with her husband, Donald Chalmers, whom she married in 1954. After living in Bridgeville, they purchased a home in Greenwood, and then later their cherished family farm in Harrington, where they have resided since 1963.
Louise attended Goldey-Beacom College and worked as an Administrative Secretary in the Department of Weights and Measures, the Department of Education, and the Lake Forest School District, from which she retired in 1991.
Louise was an incredibly talented and creative person who loved to paint, decorate her home, work in her garden, and also enjoyed traveling. She cherished her family dearly and the time spent with them. She loved shopping for antiques and enjoyed finding bargains and treasures in local stores and on eBay. She adopted several stray cats, giving them a loving home.
Louise will be remembered as being strong willed with a loving and generous spirit. Her concern for the well-being of others was one of her most endearing qualities. She will be greatly missed by all.
Louise was a devoted member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church of Harrington. She and her husband had the distinction of being the first couple married in the newly constructed church, in 1954. She was also a member of the Harrington Red Hatters.
Preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Elizabeth Gerardi, she is survived by her husband of 56 years, Donald Chalmers; brother and sister-in-law, Emil "Pete" and Delores Gerardi of Harrington; sister and brother-in-law, Marge and Millard Calhoun of San Angelo, Texas; daughters, Donna Short and her husband Cliff of Dover and Rebecca Chalmers of New Castle; her son, Gregory Chalmers and his wife Jennifer of Newark; and four grandchildren, Andrea Ascencio Evia and her husband Juan, Kyle Short, Nathaniel Chalmers, and Alexander Chalmers.
The family expresses special thanks to the Hope Lodge in Baltimore, Md., the University of Maryland Radiation Oncology and Greenebaum Cancer Center, BeeBe Medical Center and Tunnell Cancer Center in Lewes, Bayhealth Medical Center and to all local physicians who supported her.
A viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, at Melvin Funeral Home. Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Louise Chalmers may be made to St. Bernadette Church, 109 Dixon St., Harrington, DE 19952.
