William R. Clark

Age 88, of Seaford, DE, died on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at Life Care at Lofland Park in Seaford.

Mr. Clark was born in Yeagerstown, PA on March 24, 1919 and graduated from Mifflintown High School as Valedictorian on May 28, 1936 and then from Lehigh University with a BS in Civil Engineering in May of 1940. While at Lehigh University he was a member of the Lehigh Fencing Team, of Tau Beta Pi engineering society, Alpha Phi Omega honor society and was active in the ROTC. After college he was hired by the Dupont Company as one of the first 12 engineers employed at the first Nylon Plant in the world in Seaford, DE. Bill was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and went on active duty on December 7, 1941 at Fort Belvoir, VA with the Army Corps of Engineers, 548th Engineer Topographic Battalion. He was stationed in Australia and New Guinea from May 1942 through October 1944 with Engineer Intelligence of GHQ Southwestern Pacific. He then transferred to Washington, DC in October 1944 to serve in the Army Map Service at the Pentagon until his discharge in 1945 as a Captain. After his military service Bill returned to work with the Dupont Company and worked at both the Seaford and Chattanooga, Tennessee Nylon Plants until his retirement in 1984 after 43 ¾ years of service.Bill was a member of Tall Cedars Masonic Temple for over 61 years, DSPE (Delaware Society of Professional Engineers) and was a Past President, the Seaford Golf and Country Club, the Nanticoke Yacht Club and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Bill married his wife, Winifred "Freddie" Auker on March 3, 1945 and she passed away August 27, 2006.

He is survived by 3 sons, and their wives; William R. Clark Jr. and his wife, Debra of Winchester, VA, Mark A. Clark and his wife, Patricia of Atlanta, GA and Jay S. Clark and his wife, Teresa of Rochester, NY. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Will Clark, Michael Clark, Matthew Clark, Caroline Clark, J. Luke Clark, Sarah Marie Clark, Shannon Harlow, Wook-Jin (Hunter) Clark, Zachary Clark and Katherine (Katie) Clark; and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be on Friday, August 3, at 2 pm, at the CRANSTON FUNERAL HOME, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford where friends may call from 12 noon to 2 pm. Graveside services will be on Sunday, August 5, at 2 pm, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mifflintown, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to Life Care at Lofland Park, C/O Tom Brown, 901 Middleford Rd, Seaford, DE 19973; or Delaware Hospice Inc, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Thomas F. Cullen

Mr. Thomas F. Cullen, age 84 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2007.

A native and lifelong resident of Wilmington, Mr. Cullen was born in 40 Acres on February 18, 1923, son of the late Patrick and Mary (Hughes) Cullen. A veteran of WWII, he faithfully and honorably served his country as a proud member of the U.S. Army, valiantly serving in the Pacific Theater and Solomon Islands. Thomas went on to work as a lab technician at Joseph Bancroft & Sons, and was later employed at Wilmington Hospital as a member of its security staff.

Mr. Cullen is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Audrey (Kiloren) Cullen; daughter, Ann Liszkiewicz and her husband, Thomas; sons, John Cullen and his wife, Mary, Thomas Cullen Jr., Patrick Cullen and his wife, Kathleen, and Paul Cullen; sisters, Marie Feely and her husband, Thomas, and Margaret Dougherty and her husband, James; and grandchildren, Jill, Tucker, Christine, Pat, Mike, Andrew, Lauren, and Meghan.

A funeral service will be held at the CHARLES P. ARCARO FUNERAL HOME, 2309 Lancaster Ave. (opp. Cathedral Cem.), on Monday morning, August 6, at 11 am. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday morning, prior to service, from 10-11 am.

Oletha Fern Banks

Age 62, of Dover, DE, passed away July 31, 2007. Memorial Service will be Saturday, August 25, 4 pm at the BENNIE SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 717 W. Division St., Dover, DE.

Justin Alan Brown

Age 27, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on August 21, 2007, while on vacation in Elysburg, PA.

Justin graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He was an avid sports fan who especially loved the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles and looked forward to them winning a major title. Justin enjoyed his many vacations to Disney World and Knoebels Amusement Park where he loved spending time with family and friends.

Justin is preceded in death by his grandfather, George M. Futcher. Justin is survived by his loving parents, Alan and Kathy Brown; his devoted brothers, Joshua and Zachary Brown; grandparents, Virginia Futcher, Sarah Clark, and James F. and Carol Brown of Long Neck, DE; along with many adoring aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Justin's family would like to express their gratitude to Bayada Nurses, especially Jackie, Debbie, Bernard, Charles, and others for the terrific care they provided over the past 3 years.

Justin will be remembered for his easy-going and beautiful personality along with his warm, sunny smile, and the remarkable courage and grace he exhibited throughout his life.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Sunday August 26, from 6-8 pm, at MCCRERY FUNERAL HOME, on Concord Pike. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Monday, August 27, at 10 am, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, Delaware with visitation at the church from 9-9:45 am.

Helen E. Bulat (Pukala)

Age 84, of Wilmington, DE, and wife of the late Leo M. Bulat, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2007 at the Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, NJ while vacationing with her family.

Helen was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. She had worked as a cashier for 20 years in the cafeteria of the old Wilmington General Hospital, retiring in 1984.

She is survived by daughters, Sandra Gralewski and husband, Robert J. Sr. of Wilmington, DE and Nancy Ford and husband, Joseph of Drexel Hill, PA; sisters, Jane Litwa, Eleanore Sacharok and Dorothy McLaughlin; grandchildren, Robert J. Gralewski, Jr. and wife, Kelly of San Diego, CA; Jennifer L. Gralewski of Wilmington, DE; Douglas M. Ford of Drexel Hill, PA; and step-grandchildren, Kathleen Staines of Maryland and Lt. Joseph Ford, Jr., USN; great grandchildren, Tucker, Jack and Grady Gralewski all of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Pukala and step-granddaughter, Stephanie Ford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, August 24, 2007, at 11 am in St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar & So. Clayton Sts., Wilmington, DE. Entombment will follow in the Crypt of St. John Neumann, Cathedral Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday morning starting at 8:30 am at the John F. Yasik Funeral Home, 607 So. Harrison St., Wilmington, DE.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Elizabeth Church, 809 So. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19805.

Louise R. Carpenter

Age 76, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2007.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 25, at 11 am, in the DANIELS & HUTCHISON FUNERAL HOME, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown. A viewing will be tonight from 7-9 pm, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Townsend cemetery.

Norma Lee Byris

Age 66, of Ridgley, MD, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2007. Funeral 11 am, Saturday, August 25, at Trinity AME Church, Oakland Road, Ridgley, MD. Viewing 2 hours prior. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.

Robert L. "Bob" Broomell

Mr. Robert L. "Bob" Broomell, age 85, of Newark, DE, formerly of Claymont, died on Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at Broadmeadow Nursing Home in Middletown.

Born in Elsmere on January 20, 1922, Mr. Broomell was a son of the late George E. Broomell, Sr. and Emma M. Anderson Broomell. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II as a Machinist's Mate (First Class) aboard the destroyer USS Bush, which was sunk off the coast of Japan by suicide bombers in 1945. Honorably discharged at the close of the war, he was awarded both the World War II Victory Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. He would later serve in the Navy Reserve from 1955 to 1959. In civilian life, Mr. Broomell was a machinist by profession and enjoyed a 37-year career with the DuPont Company, retiring from the Experimental Station site in 1985. He spent many years in the service of his community as a firefighter, volunteering before the war with the Elsmere Fire Company. From 1949 to 1955, he was a member of the Claymont Fire Company and drove the company's ambulance. He was also a member of the Delaware Volunteer Firemen's Association. A talented woodworker, Mr. Broomell delighted in crafting presents for his family and was pleased to have made stools for each one of his grandchildren. He enjoyed collecting coins, as well, and maintained a very interesting collection for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Joe, George and Norman Broomell, and a granddaughter, Colleen. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Edith E. Webb Broomell; 4 sons, Kenneth Broomell and wife, Barbara, of Hamburg, NY; Robert Broomell and wife, Christine, of Brunswick, GA; Dennis Broomell and wife, Robin, of Delaware City, DE; and Martin Broomell and wife, Candee, of Groveland, FL; 2 daughters, Margaret Scott and husband, Bob, and Patricia Stevenson and husband, Paul, all of Newark, DE; sister, Alice Crawford of Margate, FL; 17 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren; and his pet dog, Daisy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am, on Saturday, September 1, at the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice, 100 Commerce Drive, Ste. 302, Newark, DE 19713.

Joyce Victoria Coleman (nee Sorden) "Peaches"

Age 59, of Claymont, DE, died August 28, 2007.

She was predeceased by her husband, Glenny "Jackie" Coleman, Jr., who died July 21, 1997. She is survived by 2 sons; 2 daughters; 1 brother; and 1 sister.

Services will be held at 10 am, on Wednesday, September 5, at Temple Baptist Church, 736 W. 7th St., Chester, PA. A viewing will be held from 8-10 am, at the church. Interment in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear, DE.

Mary A. Dean

Mary A. Dean, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, age 69, of Pennsville, NJ, passed away suddenly on Tuesday August 28, 2007, at her residence.

Born in Salem, NJ she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Anna Walters Shields. Mary was a longtime Pennsville resident. She was employed as a nurse at the Christiana Hospital for 28 years. Following her retirement 7 years ago she continued to be and avid traveler. She attended Park Bible Baptist Church in Pennsville. She was an avid swimmer and was a founding member of the Salem County Sportsmens Club, Carney's Point. She was a certified historian for the Dare family association of Daretown, NJ one of the original settlers of New Jersey.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Warren R. Dean, Sr., children, Warren R. Dean, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Bartlesville, OK, Christopher Dean and his wife, Lisa of Quinton, NJ and Danita Biggers and her husband, Michael of Atlanta, GA, grandchildren, Carly, Kina, Bobby, Eric, Emily, Savannah, and Scarlett. She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Deanna Ruth Dean.

Funeral services will be held 11 am, Saturday, September 1, at the LAUGHREY FUNERAL HOME, Pennsville, NJ where friends may call from 10-11 am, prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Deerfield Presbyterian Cemetery.
