William F. "Bert" Costello
Age 48, of Newark, DE, passed away at Christiana Hospital on October 18, 2007.
A life long resident of Newark, Bert was a talented auto mechanic for over 30 years.
He is survived by his father, Joseph Costello; mother, Theresa Costello (nee Kelly); wife, Kathy Costello; son, Michael Cook; stepson, Mark Taneyhill; stepdaughter, Christina Taneyhill; 3 brothers, John Costello, Joseph Costello, and Timothy Costello; 2 sisters, Theresa Salsbury and Kathy Costello; and 2 grandchildren, Karli and Mollie Taneyhill.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, on Friday, October 26, in the Chapel at Delaware Veteran's Cemetery, Bear, DE.

Elizabeth A. Loncki
Age 23, made the ultimate sacrifice in service to her country on January 7, 2007 near Al Mahmudi-yah, Iraq.
Elizabeth was a Senior Airman with Air Force Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD). Liz was a member of St. Peter the Apostle RC Church. She was a 1998 graduate of St. Peter Elementary School, a 2001 graduate of Padua Academy. She attended Arizona State University before joining the armed forces. Liz enlisted in the U.S. Air Force March 2003, graduated from
Eglin AFB–Naval Tech Explosive Ordinance Disposal School on February 27, 2004. She was stationed at Hill Air Force Base, UT, before deploying to Iraq on September 27, 2006. Elizabeth was an avid sportsmen with a particular passion for volleyball. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Her favorite time of the year was summertime. She cherished Christmas and loved shopping for the perfect gifts for all of her loved ones. When Liz was attending Padua she became part of a very "close group of friends" who stayed very close over the years. She will be dearly missed by all of her Padua sisters. Upon hearing of Liz's death, a Sgt. Major who had been instrumental in Liz's training contacted the family and expressed to them his heartfelt sentiments and respects that Liz had earned under his command "Elizabeth was an ultimate troop. I am an old special forces guy and have been through a lot of action. I have served in 3 wars and numerous squirmishes. I had the privilege of being in Elizabeth's company she was involved in extreme combat training and the highest danger she saved a lot of lives, I repeat a lot of lives. She was involved in a male dominant field that d n few males get through and she set herself above everyone. Bar none she was one of the finest people that I have ever trained. I would put her against any male counterpart. I have 2 boys in the military and have lost troops under my command in the special forces and I have never worked with a finer person".
Elizabeth is survived by her father and stepmother, Stephen and Christine Loncki, of New Castle; her sister, Olivia Loncki; her paterna grandparents, Christine "Nan" and Walter "Pop" Loncki; her aunts, Tina Masiello and her husband, Vince, Jen Gawinski and her husband, Bill; her uncle & Godfather, Scott Loncki; and her uncle, Jamie Loncki. She is also survived by her cousins, Jessica and Bryan Gawinski, Vincent and Leah Masiello, Scott and Margaret Loncki; her fiancee, Sgt. Jayson Johnson; her mother, Ann Roberts and her husband, Joey; maternal grandparents, David Koski "Grampie" and Rev. Cynthia G. "Grammie" Koski; her great-grandmother, Allie Koski; her aunt & Godmother, Alison DeFino and her husband, Michael; her aunt, Jennifer Koski-Vacirca and her husband, Lt. Col. Nicholas Koski-Vacirca, USAF; & cousins, Ryan, Nathan, Abigail and Rebecca.

Assen Ivanov Slavov
Bulgarian Independence Pioneer and
Retired Educator
Mr. Assen Ivanov Slavov, age 95, of Newark, DE, died on Friday, May 25, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House.
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 1, 1911, Mr. Slavov was the son of the late Ivan Slavov and Vesselina Beshirova Slavov. Forced to leave Bulgaria in 1949 by the forces of the country's Communist regime, he served 2 years in a Yugoslavian prison camp. After escaping to Rome, Italy in 1951, he became a member of the Bulgarian National Committee, fighting to bring liberty to his native country. In the same year, he married his first wife, Eugenia Hinze Slavov, who died in 1989. Mr. Slavov immigrated to the United States in 1956 and later accepted a position as a language teacher (French and Russian) at Newark High School, where he also coached the varsity soccer team. He retired from teaching in 1975 after 16 years of service. A gifted bridge player, Mr. Slavov was an undefeated Life Bridge Master for 36 years.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Paraskeva "Eva" Jordan Slavov; stepson, Branimir Vassilevski; stepdaughter, Zlatina Santoro; nephew and caregiver, Dimitri Dimitrov; nieces; and great nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE 19711.

Lillian H. McFarland (Handlin)
Age 93 of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2005, at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Lillian was born in Wilmington, DE, daughter of the late John H. and Mabel (Roberts) Handlin, and made the "Forty Acres" section of Wilmington her lifelong home. Lillian was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Anne's parish. Lillian's husband passed away early in life and in order to support her family, she worked various jobs - a textile worker at Bancroft Mills, cafeteria worker at Friends School, a housekeeper and babysitter. She also was very proud to be a homemaker, who loved and cared for her family, most especially her treasured grandchildren. Lillian enjoyed her cottage at White Crystal Beach, where she and her family spent many happy times over the past 50 years. She also enjoyed bingo, crabbing and ballroom dancing.
Lillian's beloved husband, William J. McFarland, passed away in 1963. She will be sadly missed by her family including sons, John H. McFarland, of Earleville, MD, and William J. McFarland, Jr., of Wilmington; daughters, Kathleen M. Alford, and her husband, David, of Newark, and Dolores Johnson, of Wilmington. Lillian was also "GG" to 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to call on Lillian's family on Thursday, January 5, 2006, from 10-11 am at Holy Rosary Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont. Mass will be celebrated at 11 am, with interment in Cathedral Cemetery.

Age 59, of Elkton, MD, died Monday, July 30, 2007.
Ms. Alexander retired from Chrysler Corp., Newark, DE, and was a member of UAW Local #1183.
Survivors include her sons, Joseph Young (Josefina), Smyrna, DE, and Robert Young (Melissa Stevens), Elkton, MD; mother, Hilda Wesley Alexander, Elkton, MD; grandchildren, Akeem, Davon, Cheyenne, Elisha, and Cierra Young; siblings, Rudolph Wesley (Shirley), Eunice Redden (John), all of Newark, DE, Caroline Jones (Louis), Cora Berry (Ronald), Delores, and Tracy Alexander, all of Elkton, MD; aunts, Ann Wilson, Elkton, MD, and Nona Wesley, Berlin, NJ; uncle, Thomas Wesley, Sr. (Gladys), Elkton, MD; and former husband, Joseph Young. Also surviving are special nephews, Armond and Rashawn; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends; and her best friends and caregivers, Marilyn Creed, Martha Hudson, Joyce Maif, Jack Ison (Rhonda), Funda Cinar, Manolya Basaslan, and Debbie Begin. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Alexander, Sr.; brother, Joseph Alexander, Jr.; and nephew, Ronald Berry, Jr.

Thomas (Tom) A. Brown
Tom age 87 passed away peacefully at Dr. Phillips Hospital 30 July 2007 surrounded by loving family members.
Tom formerly of Newark, DE was a resident of Orlando, FL since 1985. Tom was born December 7, 1919, in Marissa, IL, the son of Nellie Mae and David Brown. Eight sisters and one brother have preceded him in death. Tom was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Mary Dougherty Brown who passed away in July 2000. Tom attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Initially Tom taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Marissa, IL before joining the Marines in 1943. Tom was a veteran of WWII and witnessed the "first" flag raising on Iwo Jima. He was a member of VFW Post #4287. After WWII Tom started his career in civil engineering with Howard, Needles, Taman and Bergendoff that led him to various projects on the east coast. One of his most memorable accomplishments was that of Project Engineer on the first Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Castle, DE in 1949. Tom was transferred to Miami, FL in 1972 and worked on several projects throughout Florida before retiring after 42 years with HTN&B. Tom was a devoted member of the Orlando Church in Orlando, FL. He was an avid reader and wrote a book of memories entitled "Only Yesterday" in 1999. Tom also wrote articles for his hometown newspaper "The Marissa Messenger." He also enjoyed his daily walks at Publix store #465 and #1015, and stayed in touch with his numerous friends and relatives throughout the US.
Tom will be greatly missed by his 3 daughters, Pauline Ross and her husband, Philip of South Mills, NC, Patricia (his care giver for the last 7 years) and her companion, Patrick Nolan of Orlando, FL, Mary Louise Brown-Haines and her husband, Richard of Delaware City, DE; his grandsons, Michael Ross and wife, Jennifer of South Mills, NC, Jonathan Ross of Boston, MA, Thomas G. Brown, of Cape Coral, FL and Joshua Brown of Middletown, DE and granddaughter, Marissa D. Haines of Delaware City, DE. Also his great-grandsons, Thomas and Jordan of Cape Coral, FL; and great granddaughters Samantha, Tylor and Madisyn of South Mills, NC. Also a host of relatives and friends throughout the US.
A special thanks to Dr. Glenn Pfaff and his staff for their care of Tom over the past 24 years and his homecare aide Iris. The family would also like to thank the staff at Dr. Phillips Hospital on the 3rd floor for their care of Tom in his final hours.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 2, at CAREY HAND COLONIAL FUNERAL HOME in Orlando, FL, at 4 pm. A private burial will take place in Marissa, IL at the Marissa Cemetery August 4, at 3 pm.
