Dorothy S. Layton

Dorothy was born on March 10, 1917 in City Point, VA. Her parents were Florence and James Sparks. She died on October 14, 2008 at Willow Valley Retirement Community in Lancaster, PA.

She grew up in Penns Grove, NJ and graduated from Penns Grove High School in 1933. She married Robert Layton in 1940. She lived on Ives Avenue in Carney's Point for fifty years until 1977 when she moved to Willow Valley. She worked at the College of Nursing as an Administrator from 1962 until 1977. She loved to play golf and followed college basketball, especially the Women's teams. She was a loyal but critical fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Eagles. In 1972 She and her husband took a sports fan's ultimate trip: the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany.

She was predeceased by her husband Bob and her son, Bobby, her sister Helen Oliver and Frances Herrmann and her brother Arthur. She is survived by her son, Arthur and his wife, Anne of Stamford, CT and her sister, Jean Kugler and her husband William of Salem, NJ.

Graveside services will be held on October 25 at Lawnside Cemetery in Woodstown, NJ. For more details, please send an email to artlayton@optonline.net.

Adrian G. Malone

Age 25, died suddenly October 12, 2008, Wilmington, DE. Service, 11am Tues., October 21, at St. Paul UAME Church, 3114 N. Market St, Wilm.; viewing, 9-11 am. Burial, Silverbrook.

Jane M. Mosley

Age 88, passed away October 14, 2008. Service 12 pm Mon., October 20, at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1325 Barksdale Rd., Newark; viewing, 10-11:45 am only. Burial Gracelawn Memorial Park. Arr. by CONGO FUNERAL HOME.

Robert Louis Sage, Sr.

Age 70, of Hartly, DE, died October 15, 2008. Services, 1pm Monday, October 20, in Faith Baptist Church, 1575 Bryn-Zion Rd., Smyrna, DE; visitation 1 hour prior. Burial Odd Fellows Cemetery. Arr. by Faries Funeral Directors.

George D. Somers

George D. Somers, age 100, a resident of Foulk Manor North, formerly of Indian Field, Wilmington, died on Saturday, October 11, 2008.

A native of Wilmington, George retired as the General Foreman of Amalgamated Leather Company after 35 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for the DuPont Company, Chestnut Run site. In 1943, George and his wife Louise, joined the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in North Wilmington, and in 1948, he was ordained as a church Elder.

His wife of 51 years, Louise E. Somers, died in 1988. George was also preceded in death by his sister, Phoebe Terrell. He is survived by two daughters, Jean Gabriel and Phoebe S. Loss and her husband, Brian B. Loss, DDS; five grandchildren, William Gabriel and his wife, Beth, Sandi Gabriel, Karen Murdock and her husband, Paul, Dawn Walsh and her husband, Bob, and Miles Loss and his wife, Martha; and five great-grandchildren, William and Jason Gabriel, Shannon and Brett Walsh, and Anthony Petruccelli.

The family would like to thank Dr. A. Kahn for his compassionate care, and, also would like to thank George's many friends at Foulk Manor North for making the last three years of his life so happy and pleasant.

The funeral service and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring the memory of George D. Somers by sending a contribution to Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 503 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809.

Victor F. Talmo

Mr. Victor F. Talmo, age 84 of Wilmington, DE, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

Mr. Talmo was born in Wilmington on March 21, 1924, son of the late Frank M. and Anna R. (Duszynska) Talmo. Victor was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, honorably serving during WWII as an Aerial Gunner and Flight Deck Commander aboard the USS Bataan. He was awarded several medals for his valor and heroism. Victor had been a longtime employee of DelDot, formerly the Delaware State Highway Department, offering 39 years of exemplary service, many in which he served as a construction supervisor.

Mr. Talmo is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Phyllis (Susi) Talmo; siblings, Rose Schueler, Florence Grenda (Thomas), James Talmo (Lorraine), and Franny Talmo (Lorraine); his uncles; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Antoinette Buschler, and brother, John Talmo, Sr.

The family wishes to extend their deepest and heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Rebecca Jaffe and Victor's niece, Donna Susi Rash, for their excellent and compassionate care of Victor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Rd. in Wilmington, on Monday morning, October 20 at 11am. Entombment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Monday morning, prior to mass, from 9-10:45am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence, 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, DE 19713.

Paul K. Abrams

Age 71, of Millsboro, DE, a former 35 year resident of Pleasant Hills, died on Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Beebe Medical Center.

Mr. Abrams was born in Louisville, KY, the son of the late Mary (Porter) and Rufus Melvin Abrams. Paul was a 1955 graduate of Newark High School and worked for over 10 years at NVF Corporation. From there he worked as a lab tech at the DuPont Company's Glasgow Site for 25 years before retiring. After his retirement he continued to work for a couple of years at Air Liquide. Paul was a former coach in the Stanton-Newport Little League and a member of the Delaware Air National Guard. He enjoyed hunting, but in past years he has become an avid fisherman, belonging to the Delaware Mobile Surf Fisherman's Association and the Indian River Yacht Club.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Arthur "Jackie" Abrams, Virginia Zanleoni and Donald Abrams. Paul is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia (McCulley) Abrams; his daughters and their spouses, Carol and John Calderone of Wilmington, DE and Jeanne and Paul Polries of West Chester, PA; his 4 grandchildren of whose sporting events he attended with great joy and enthusiasm, Jason and Jessica Calderone and Ally and Erin Polries. Paul also leaves his sisters, Jean Spry, Dolores Ursillo, Anna Shrader, Ruth Bourdon and Mary "Betty" Stallard and his brother, William Abrams. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone and Milltown Roads, on Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm, where funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 11 am. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Patricia V. Akers

Age 85, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Naamans Creek Country Manor.

Born in Bethlehem, PA, Patricia was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Conway) Hart. She worked in the food service department of the Red Clay School District before her retirement.

She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Raymond J. Akers, in 1983 and her sisters, Lucy Enger, Beatrice Draper and Barbara Verucci. She is survived by her sons, Timothy, Ronald and William Akers and his wife, Lillian; her sisters, Mary Oswald and Jean Draper; her brother, William Hart; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Naamans Creek Country Manor for their excellent and compassionate care of Patricia V. Akers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 23, 11 am, Our Lady of Fatima Church, 801 DuPont Hwy, New Castle, DE 19720. Visitation will be after 10 am. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Our Lady of Fatima Church at the address above.

Arthur Cephas

Of Selbyville, DE, died October 16, 2008. Services will be held, 12 noon, Wednesday, October 22, St. Johns AME Church, Bishopville, MD. Viewing, 11am - 12 noon, Wednesday and on Tuesday, 6-8 pm, at the church. Watson FH.

Daisy Evans Clark

Age 83 of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully on Sunday. October 19, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in London, England she attended St. Mary's School and Church and was unable to complete her graduation from Uffington Road Secondary School due to the WWII bombing raids of London. Daisy came to the U.S. in February, 1947 on the Queen Elizabeth. While proud of her English heritage, she was thrilled to become a U.S. citizen in 1954. Daisy was employed at Delaware Power & Light as a Draftsman. While employed there, she met the love of her life, James A. Clark, Jr. and they were married at Valley Forge Chapel on May 5, 1956. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother with a gentle sweet soul and was a Christian role model to all she encountered. Daisy was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she had been a Deacon. Daisy was a member of the Sarah Circle and Women's club and also helped deliver Meals on Wheels.

Daisy was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, James A. Clark, Jr. who passed away in April 2005. She is survived by her twin daughters, Louise DeNight and her husband. Kim, of Elkton, MD; and Lorraine Bollinger and her husband, John, of Fairfax, VA; and son, James A. Clark, III. and his wife, Monica, of Okeechobee. FL; and daughter, Beverly Holcombe and her husband, Andrew, of Elsmere, DE: and 8 grandchildren, Danielle, Kelly, Kyle, Katie, Tim, Jamie, Christopher and Rebecca.

Friends may call from 6-8 pm, on Wednesday, October 22, at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm, Thursday, October 23, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pennsylvania Avenue and Rodney Street. Wilmington.

Laura A. Ayres

Age 81, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on October 21, 2008, at home.

She was the wife of the late Philip W. Ayres. Born in Chester, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Maria Glowacki. She was a retired supervisor at Teledyne Wirtz Co.

Mrs. Ayres is survived by her sons, Philip W., Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Laurel, MD and Stephen W. and his wife Maria of Conowingo, MD; grandchildren, Brandon W. and his wife Heather, Jennifer Ayres and Nathaniel W.; sister, Eleanor Slivenski. She was preceded in death by sons, Paul W. and Mark W. and grandchildren, Lori and Stephen Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral mass at 11 am, on Monday, October 27, at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Rd., Wilmington DE 19810. Interment will be at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, PA. Viewing will be Monday in the Church from 10-11 am.
