ROWLAND ADAMS
Rowland Keedy Adams, Jr. Rowland Keedy “Tut” Adams, Jr passed away on Friday, July 10, 2009 of natural causes at a local Wilmington, DE hospital at 86 years of age. He was born on April 07, 1923 in Baltimore, MD where he lived until graduating from the University of Maryland with a PhD in organic chemistry. He was the youngest child of Rowland Keedy Adams, Sr, a prominent attorney and member of the Maryland Court of Appeals, and his wife, Elva Hoffman. His is a descendent of early Maryland settlers dating back to the Colonial Period. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Jean Louise Hamm Terry and his older sister, Marja Adams Bennett. He is survived by his son, Steven Rowland Adams of Fairfax, VA; his daughter, Nancy Cornelia Adams and her husband Charles A Sims, MD from Los Angeles, CA. and the children of his sister, Patrick, Kathleen, Cynthia, John and Stephen Christopher Bennett. He will be remembered and missed by his friends and neighbors. Rowland spent his childhood in Baltimore and had happy summers in Annapolis sailing on the Chesapeake. This love of the outdoors evolved into becoming an avid fisherman and duck hunter. After his retirement he developed a keen interest in bird watching and astronomy. During most of his life he was known as “Tut”. This nickname was bestowed on him because as the only son and youngest child his father doted on him. Other family members in referring to the little prince took to calling him Tut after the Egyptian King Tut whose tomb was discovered around the time Rowland was born. After receiving his PhD, He joined DuPont in July 1949 the R & D department as an organic chemist, later spent 23 years in the patent section before retiring in 1985. He was retained as a consultant until 1992. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for 62 years, Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity, Alpha Rho Chapter. When he was younger, he and his wife were active in community affairs, sang in the choir of St Albans Episcopal Church in Wilmington, loved parties and dancing. BERNICE AHERN
Bernice S. Ahern Age 90, of Wilmington, DE and Rehoboth Beach, DE passed away on October 30, 2008. She was a secretary for the Old Age Welfare, the Navy Dept. (Dravo Corporation), the Pennsylvania RR, the Board of Education, all in Wilmington, and retired from the Red Clay School District after over 30 years service. Bernie was a member of the American Legion Post # 5 and V.F.W. Post # 7447, both in Rehoboth. She and her husband, Bud, owned Ahern’s Cottages in Rehoboth Beach for 62 years. Her husband, William R. “Bud” Ahern, Sr. died in 1983. Bernie is survived by her children; Judith C. Evans and Bonnie L. Shaw both of Wilmington, and William R. “Sonny” Ahern, Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, FL, her brother; John A. Stigile of Lewes, DE, 9 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; Harry A. and Margaret E. Stigile and sister, Alma S. “Gim” Mulhern. JOHN E. AIKEN
John E. Aiken Age 63, died peacefully in his sleep on August 1, 2009 after a brief courageous battle with cancer. John was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Ralph and Blanche Aiken on November 13, 1945. He was a self employed contractor, former co-owner of J T Contracting for many years, later working with Baldini & Sons, Bill Smith, and family members. John was a good and caring man. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching wrestling with his grandson and falling asleep in his recliner with his dog. John will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 44 years, Elizabeth, son-in-law, Warren Rangnow; grandchildren, Crystal and Alan; great granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth; and his faithful companion, Maggie. He is also survived by his sisters, Virginia and Donna Aiken; brothers, Albert (Carla), LeeRoy (Karen), George (Debbie), and Robert, Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, close friends, and business associates. John was predeceased by his brother, Bill and sister, Diane. JOANNE ALTEMUS
Joanne C. Altemus Age 70 of Newark, DE passed away on July 22, 2009 at Heartland Hospice House. A lifelong resident of New Castle County, Joanne was the daughter of the late Robert and the late Sara Conly. She retired from the State of De Department of Labor in 2004 after many years of service. Joanne loved camping with her family and friends and was a member of the First State Campers of FCRV and the Delaware Rolling Wheels. After retirement, Joanne enjoyed spending time at the Newark Senior Center and participating in their trip activities. Joanne was preceded in death by her husband Harry of 47 years. She is survived by her son Gregory and his wife Karyn along with many in laws, nieces and nephews. Joanne’s family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Medical Oncology and Hematology for their hard work and dedication. Elizabeth Abbott Anderson Age 98, of Wilmington, DE passed away on February 14, 2009. She was a sales person at Berger Brothers in Wilmington, retiring in 1988 after 17 years service. She was a much loved and faithful servant of the Cedars United Methodist Church where for many years taught bible school. “Auntie” is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Grace E. Mackay; and brothers, H. Wayne, Edward J., Wilmer E., William J., and Robert W. Abbott. Ann B. Anthony, Age 80, of Wilmington, DE and formerly of Philadelphia, PA. passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 5, 2009. Ann, who retired upon her marriage in 1965, worked for Penn Ventilator and Airco as a telephone operator. Her beloved husband of 19 years, Abraham Richard, passed away in 1985. She was also the loving mother of Ann and her husband, Christopher Minner, and the stepmother of Richard Sr. and his wife Marlene, Eugene and his wife Yvonne, and the late John Anthony. Ann was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren and loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. ALFRED ARMSTRONG
Alfred Warner Armstrong III Age 81, of Wilmington, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully away on the 6th, July, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. Born August 3, 1927 in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Alfred W. Armstrong, Jr. and Eleanor VanVechten Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong was an Army veteran of WWII. After that service, he traveled frequently to Europe. While staying in London, he met his future bride, Frances Grahame. She moved back to the United States with Mr. Armstrong and they raised a family of four children. Mr. Armstrong retired from Hercules Inc. as a purchasing agent. This job took him and his family out west before returning home to Wilmington in 1974. Alfred loved books and was a voracious reader of history, biographies, and anything having to do with England or her colonies or the State of Delaware. His encyclopedic knowledge of General European and American history and historical was legendary among his friends. This sharp mind never waned and was evident through the rest of his life. Throughout his life Mr. Armstrong was politically active in the Republican Party.; even running for a Delaware Senate Seat in 1988 but did not win. Mr. Armstrong was predeceased by his daughters, Jane Armstrong Connelly, and Anne Joslin. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Frances Armstrong, and his children, Alfred W.Armstrong IV and wife Kerry, Fiona Armstrong Lynn and husband John , son-in-law, Ted Joslin, and 3 grandchildren, Evan Connelly, Hannah and Jack Lynn. The family would like to thank Ted and Rosemary Lassiter, Al Taylor, Joe Lavelle, and John Connelly for the place they held in our father’s heart. He will be remembered as a mentor and a source of great support to many in the community. Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Morgan Arnold, a native Delawarean, departed this life on May 23, 2009 at the age of 92 years. A graduate of the University of Delaware, he joined the Army Reserves, serving his country in World War II and post-war Korea as well as teaching military science at Delaware State College. He earned a bronze star as an anti-aircraft artillery officer in the XIII Corps in 1945. He always cherished the time he spent in post-war Korea as especially gratifying for the personal connections he made with the people of that country. He served as an Elder at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church and, after retirement, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth Beach. He co-founded Donahue Color Service in the early ‘60’s, was active with the YMCA “Y’s Men” and Indian Guide Programs and the Delaware Rose Society. In Rehoboth, he spent his free time serving Meals-On-Wheels and taking pictures for Stockley Center, Beebe Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Camp Arrowhead, and Special Olympics. He was also active in the Retired Officers’ Club of Rehoboth Beach. Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, whom he dearly missed, and his sons, Stephen and David. He is survived by his daughter, Rev. Nanese Hawthorne; son and wife, Tim and Becky Arnold; daughter and husband, Perrie and Robert Carrow; 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. R. Wayne Ashbee Age 84, of Wilmington, DE passed away on April 14, 2009. Mr. Ashbee was born in Mannington, WV. He graduated from Washington Irving H.S. in Clarksburg, WV. Wayne served with the U.S.M.C. in the South Pacific and China during WW II and later as a LT. with the Pennsylvania National Guard. He graduated with a degree in Physics from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburg, PA. Wayne worked for 2 years for the H.J. Heinz Co. followed by 33 years with E.I. DuPont and 5 years with the State of Delaware as the Director of the Division of Water Resources. He was an active volunteer in numerous community and business type organizations. Wayne was especially proud of his service as a Director of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Linn Wroe Ashbee in 1992 and his oldest daughter, Tawndra Lewis in 2005. He is survived by 3 children, Shauna Lee Dowling of Powder Springs, PA, Dion Ruark Ashbee of Middletown, DE, and Loren Kye Donahue of Wilmington, DE; 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Gay Beatrice Aslanian, formerly of Hackensack, N.J., died after a long illness on August 12, 2009 at Cadia at Riverside Health Center, Wilmington, DE. She had recently turned 67. Gay was born in East Orange, N.J. to the late Mark and Beatrice Aslanian. She worked as a Credit Clerk for Brooks Brothers in New York City. Gay is survived by cousins, including Joan Q. Yulduzian and her husband, Greg, of Hockessin, who were her primary caregivers. The funeral and interment will be held privately. Robert C. Aucott-Age 77 Beloved husband of the late Phyllis Aucott went home to be with His Lord and Savior on January 18, 2009. He was the only son of the late Clarence and Beatrice Rumer-Aucott. Bob was a 1948 graduate of Olney High School in Philadelphia. He served 1 year in the Air National Guard and 2 years in the 1st Calvary Army. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Bob was employed with the Bell Telephone Company for 36 years and retired as an Assistant Vice President of Communications for Merrill Lynch in Somerset, New Jersey. His passions included his family, engineering, and golf. Bob is survived by his son Stephen, married to Cheryl and their daughters Christine and Rebecca, his daughter Diane Aucott-Ward and her husband Robert Ward, his mother-in-law Mary Goodwin and brother-in-law Robert Goodwin, his honorary daughter Lorna-Noel Robertson and her husband John, and their children Tyler, Mercedes, and Brittany. Eleanor D. Bachmura (Schlink) Age 86, of Newark, DE passed away on July 27, 2009. She was a secretary for DuPont, Chestnut Run retiring in 1985 after 30 years service. Eleanor was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the church’s choir. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and cross stitching. Her husband, Joseph P. Bachmura died in 2005. Eleanor is survived by her children, Christine Pratt and her husband, John M. of North Star, and Jay R. Schlink, Sr. and his wife, Michele L. of Townsend. Affectionately known as Mimi to her 5 grandchildren, Michael, Chris, Maribeth, Melissa, and Jay, Jr.; and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Denney. Nancy Jeane Ballach Age 54, of New Castle, DE, passed away on August 28, 2009 after a tough battle against breast cancer. Born in Detroit, Michigan to Stanley and Dorothy Tyndell, Nancy was a wonderful daughter and loving sister. She later became an unbelievable mother and Nana. Nancy had been a trust administrator at Wilmington Trust Bank. She loved being a student and always appreciated learning new things and had recently received her paralegal degree. She was a member of Brandywine Valley Baptist Church. Nancy was an amazing cook and took great pleasure in entertaining for others. She enjoyed spending time with her children and their friends and grandchildren. She loved visiting her sons in California and her family in Michigan. She will be missed so much for her easy going personality, her wonderful sense of humor and her ability to gracefully come out on top of every situation. She is survived by her mom, Dorothy Tyndell, her four wonderful sons, John and his girlfriend Ashley, David, Edward and Michael: her daughter Faith Drobinski and her husband Shane, her beloved grandson Little Shane and her granddaughter Nyla Grace, her sisters, Susie O’ Keefe and Janet Al-Hadidi, and their husbands and children and her brothers, Kirk and Frank Tyndell, along with their wives and children. Mary Rocci Barbetta “Cookie Lady” Age 89, of Wilmington, DE, went home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2009. She was born in Chester, PA and lived most of her life in Wilmington. She is remembered as a kind and Christian woman whose faith in the Lord touched so many people’s lives. She was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed baking, especially her cookies, walking and reading the Bible. Mary is the daughter of the late Corinto Rocci and Isadora Olivieri, as well as, the wife of the late Erminio Barbetta. She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Janice Barbetta and her siblings, Ines, Josephine, Joseph, Lillian and Anna. She is survived by her brothers, Nick Rocci and Gene Mirolli; her children Robert and Linda; their spouses, Sue Barbetta and William Woodis and 5 grandchildren, Bill, Christina, Michael, Brittany and David. NANCY ELLEN BANIS
Nancy Ellen Behmer Banis, age 70, of Wilmington, died on April 22, 2009. Nancy Ellen was born in Philadelphia, PA and was graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls where she was a big sister, a gym team member and a member of the Girls High Orchestra playing the flute. She organized the Girls High flute Club. Nancy also was a member of the All Philadelphia City Orchestra and also played in the West Oak Lane Orchestra… In addition Nancy Ellen was very active in Fellowship House and developed outside work camps in Germantown. Nancy was a recipient of a scholarship to the Fleisher Art School. Nancy Ellen modeled in the Young Teens modeling program with Strawbridge & Clothier, John Wanamaker, Bonwit Teller, etc. Nancy attended Temple University where she was the first sophomore to have attained status as a Templayer. In addition to Temple Theatre Nancy was a volunteer for the American Red Cross certifying lifesavers, active in the Temple University modern interpretative dance program. She swam for the Philadelphia Turner’s swim team. Nancy Ellen also attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. Some of her most favorite activities were gardening, traveling, camping in Maine, especially in her beloved Adirondack Mountains in New York State which she had done since childhood, swimming, cooking, music, theater and art. Nancy worked for John N. Rosen, MD in Bucks County, PA compiling information for his second book. She then was employed by the advertising agency, N.W. Ayer & Son in Philadelphia and Strawbridge & Clothier as a copywriter. Following her marriage to Benedict Banis, Jr. in 1967 she moved to Wilmington, DE and worked in the Wilmington General Hospital’s Childbirth Program and was in charge of the Newborn Photo Service. When the General Division closed Nancy moved to the Medical Center of Delaware’s Delaware Division, Department of Medicine. As a Medical Center employee Nancy was selected to volunteer on the Employee Activities Committee where she escorted many trips in the United States, Canada and Europe. Nancy was a 35 year volunteer at Winterthur Museum which was another very favorite place of Nancy’s combining her admiration of the decorative arts, history, antiques and the out of doors. She also sat on The Friends of Rockwood Museum Board and the Chestnut Run Federal Credit Union Board. Upon retirement after 35 years at Christiana Care Health System Nancy continued traveling and enjoyed her role as the Travel Volunteer for the Sellers Senior Center. Nancy was especially devoted to the people and projects of the Ardens communities of DE. She greatly enjoyed reading to the children in the Arden ARCA summer program, the community dinners, other Arden activities such as the Shakespeare theatre, Gilbert & Sullivan, Arden Young Actors Shakespeare, music events, Arden Fair, Phil Fisher’s Art programs,….almost any & everything Arden. The funeral service was held privately. Charles “Bus” Barker Age 82, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at his home on Friday, May 8, 2009. Bus was born in Bellefonte, DE. and graduated from Brown Vocational School in1944. He was a naval veteran of WWII in the Pacific Theater and was a one time member of the Brandywine Hundred Fire Co. Bus was a member of IBEW Local 313, VFW Post 2907, Oriental Lodge #27 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Delaware Consistory and Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church. His favorite pastime was fishing with his grandsons. Bus is survived by his wife Jane, of 56 years; 3 children, Becky and her husband Ralph, Charles and his wife Nina, and Harry and his wife Patti; brothers, Robert and his wife Hanna, and Carl; grandsons, Benjamin, Thomas, Timothy, Matthew, Joseph and Nicholas. Howard Dudley Barton, born January 19, 1927 in Adairsville, Georgia, the son of Howard Dewey and Julia Scott Barton, died on June 3, 2009 at age 82. He lived most of his life in Wilmington, DE, graduating from Wilmington High School in 1944. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corps and attended Princeton University. Mr. Barton was called to active duty in July 1945 and was sent to Guam for ten months with the 75th Air Service Group. He attended the University of Delaware where he studied mechanical engineering with the class of 1950. He joined Haveg Corporation in 195l as Project Engineer and was employed by Haveg, Hercules Inc., and Ametek which were successive owners of a Wilmington business. Mr. Barton retired in 1993 as Vice President of Ametek Inc., and General Manager of the Haveg Division. He was lovingly cared for in his final days by the staff of Heartland Hospice House, for which his family is very grateful. Mr. Barton is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Kathleen Townsend, a son, Keith Barton of Wilmington, and a daughter and son in law, Cynthia and William Rafferty of West Chester, PA, two granddaughters, Sarah and Katie Barton of Wilmington, and a sister, Bettye Orr of Johns Island, SC. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church at 11 am where friends may call after 10 am. GRACE ELIZABETH BIGGERS
Grace Elizabeth Biggers (Stauffer) Age 88, of Lewes, DE, formerly of The Cedars, passed away on December 12, 2008 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Biggers, in 2005 and brother, Warren Stauffer. Grace is survived by her children, Charles D. Biggers of Wilmington, and Madeline Carole Kendall with whom she lived in Lewes, sister, Emily Vaughn of Middletown, 6 grandchildren, Keith A. Kendall, Brian L. Kendall, Tina M. Biggers, Diane Wysock, Christopher Biggers, and Alicia Biggers, and 5 great grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Billie Taylor and Pat Sanford from Griswold Special Care, and the staff at the Delaware Hospice Center. Bernice A. Binkley Age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away on January 1, 2009. She was a homemaker, a feisty woman, had a great love of life and love of family, and a tremendous sense of humor. Her husband, Elmer G. Binkley died in 2000. Bernice is survived by her children, Kathleen Widdoes, Robert H. Latham, Jr., Dorothy Colgain, Darla Laramore, William E. Binkley, and Richard Binkley, 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Kenny Wayne Laramore. Stanley W. Birch “Bud” Age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully in Christiana Hospital after courageously fighting a short illness. Stanley was a Army veteran of WW II who proudly served his country. He was a long time member and past president of the Greenhill Lions Club. Stanley was a master plumber and owned and operated Stanley Plumbing and Heating Co. for over 60 years. He was an avid golfer and gardener. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting and special events. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; Stanley and Mary Szymanski. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rhea C. (Lawrence) Birch, his daughter; Rhea Markwood, his son; Jack Birch (Beverly), his grandchildren; Deborah Markwood (Tom Pitts), Jim Markwood (Holly), Kristin White (Bill), Karen Klemaszewski (Michael), Jack Birch (Danna), his great grandchildren; Ryan, Nathan, and Justin Markwood, Gillian and Evan Klemaszewski, Kayla Birch, and Nicolas White. Stanley is also survived by his sisters; Mary Ratasiewicz, Margaret Amatuzio, Frances Kendzierski, and Florence McGuire. STANLEY P. BLISH
Stanley P. Blish Stanley P. Blish, retired DuPont executive, age 83, passed away February 23rd at home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was born in Boston, Mass. April 29, 1925. Mr. Blish, a graduate of Admiral Farragut Naval Academy and Yale University, served as a Naval Officer during World War II, retiring from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Following active duty, he began his career in marketing communications in 1946 as a junior accountant executive in the New York advertising agency, Benton & Bowles, Inc. He joined the DuPont Company in 1949. In the succeeding years, Blish served in staff assignments with many of the Company’s major operating businesses, including Textile Fibers, Photo Products, Fabrics & Finishes, and Biochemicals. He retired as a Division Director of the Marketing Communications Department in 1984. An adventurer at heart, Blish loved open-ocean scuba diving and sailing their Bermuda 40 yawl off the coast of Maine. But his passion was flying. As an aviator, he held commercial, instrument and multi-engine aircraft ratings. He and his wife Carolyn, also multi-engine rated, flew their aircraft on countless trips from Canada to South America. He was also a marksman and avid gun collector. He is survived by his cherished wife of 60 years, Carolyn. Also surviving are two daughters: Valerie and her husband Bill Goodwin, Christi and her husband Tom Morrison. He was the proud grandfather of four and great-grandfather of ten. Stanley and Carolyn lived in Greenville, Delaware prior to their recent move to Willow Valley in Lancaster. They continued to summer in their home on an island off the downeast coast of Maine. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 14 at 1pm at Immanuel Church 2414 Pennsylvania Ave. Wilmington, Delaware 19806. The family will be receiving friends from 12 to 1pm.
