Robert D. Smith Jr., 82, of Bridgeville, a loving husband, a devoted father and a wonderful friend, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
He was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Bridgeville, son of the late Robert D. Smith, Sr. and the late Anita Verona (Messick) Smith.
Mr. Smith was secretary/treasurer of T.S. Smith and Son, a family owned and operated business in the Bridgeville area that he retired from in 1982. The business was founded by his grandfather. He was also a member of Union United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Glena Jeanette (Short) Smith; his son, Robert D. Smith III and his wife Stephanie of Milford; his daughter, Glena Smith Huskey and her husband Ty of Seaford; his granddaughter, Sara Smith of Milford; his grandson, Christopher Huskey of Seaford; his sister, Margaret Lent of Longwood, Fla.; and his brother, Jerry Smith of Seaford.
Funeral services were held at Union United Methodist Church, Bridgeville, with interment in Bridgeville cemetery
in Bridgeville. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel.

E. Jane Erek Briner,
Christ Church member
E. Jane Erek Briner, 83, of Kennett Square, Pa., and formerly of Dover, passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at Chester County Hospital in West Chester, Pa.
Born in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of the late William Stanaway and the late Gertrude Dill Stanaway.
Mrs. Briner was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Dover.
Her first husband of 42 years, Thomas A. Erek, passed away in 1988, and her second husband of eight years, Charles William Briner, passed away in 1999.
She is survived by a son, Stephen P. Erek and his wife Becky of Fort Myers, Fla.; a daughter, Donna Erek More and her husband Malcolm of Kennett Square, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Heather Erek of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Service and interment will be private. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Briner’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, Delaware Chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
Michael F. Cummings,
Emmy award winner
Michael F. Cummings, 56, died suddenly on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 at Stamford Hospital.
Born February 3, 1951 in Stamford, Conn., he was the son of the late Francis X. and Blanche K. Kersten Cummings.
Michael was self-employed in TV production for the past two and a half years. He won two Emmy Awards: ABC News Millennium Celebration (2000) and NBC News Olympic Games from Utah.
He is survived by is wife, Frances T. Cummings of Norwalk, Conn.; a sister, Nancy L. Cummings of Long Neck; his uncle and aunt, Edward and Dorothy Kersten of Beacon Falls, Conn.; his aunt and uncle, Louise and Fred Tucciarone of Poughauq, N.Y.; a niece, two nephews and several cousins also survive.
Services were held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Stamford, with interment in St. John’s cemetery
in Darien, Conn.

William Joseph Dugan,
Verizon retiree
William Joseph Dugan, 64, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mr. Dugan was born August 16, 1943 in Philadelphia, son of the late Francis and Margaret Ritter Dugan.
Mr. Dugan retired as a service technician for Verizon in 2002 after working more than 30 years in the telecommunication field.
He was a very devout Catholic and a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church. He was known for his generosity and charitable nature.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Dugan.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann O’Malley Dugan; three daughters, Jennifer Marie Dugan of Clearwater, Fla., Christina Alexis Dugan of New York, N.Y., and Kara Elizabeth Dugan of Allentown, Pa.; two sisters, Barbara Rufo of Folcroft, Pa. and Mary “Pat” Dubin of Milton; and one brother, Francis Dugan of Rehoboth Beach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles Avenue and Laurel Street, Rehoboth Beach, with Father Raymond Forester as celebrant. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven cemetery , Dagsboro.

Catherine Marchman,
enjoyed gardening
Catherine Marchman, 86, of Millsboro, formerly of Chester, Pa., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, at her son’s home in Massey’s Landing.
Mrs. Marchman was born Nov. 5, 1920, daughter to the late Peter and Anna Antonia Pazuk.
Mrs. Marchman was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed gardening and going to the slots. Catherine also loved watching and feeding the animals in her back yard.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry Marchman, in 1999.
She is survived by two sons, Harry Marchman Jr. of Millsboro, and Joseph Marchman of Massey’s Landing.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Lawn Croft cemetery

Donna J. Foskey, 55, of Milton, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
She was born Nov. 22, 1951 in Wilmington, daughter of the late Leonard L. and Iva Christine Kelly Smith.
Mrs. Foskey was a graduate of Beebe School of Nursing. She was employed by Beebe Medical Center for 24 years and for seven years she worked in home health care nursing. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and a member of Unity Chapter 16 of the Eastern Star. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Paul E. Foskey; her daughter Melissa Raffaele and her husband Tony of Harrington; three grandchildren, Alex, Micayla and Brandon; three sisters, Patty McCoy and her husband William of Dover, Marianne Shetzler and her husband Thomas of Smyrna and Lisa Tull and her husband Steven of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour before the service.
Entombment at Bethel Methodist Mausoleum will be private.

Grace G. Slaughter,
retired supervisor
Grace G. Slaughter of Rehoboth Beach and formerly of Dover, and Hancock, N.H., passed away at home Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007.
Mrs. Slaughter was born in Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of the late Augustus and Lillian Porter Green.
She worked as a supervisor for Diamond State Telephone Company, which is now Verizon, for 35 years before retirement.
Mrs. Slaughter attended schools in Harrington, Delaware and also in Pennsylvania.
She was a member of the Hancock Historical Society, the Boston Art League, the Art Auction Committee for Beebe Hospital in Lewes and the Bell Telephone Pioneers of America.
Mrs. Slaughter was also a sponsor of the International Women’s Day at Delaware Technical & Community College in Georgetown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward B. Slaughter and two brothers, Frank and Augustus Green.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Dr. Patricia Susan Slaughter of Boston, Mass., and Rehoboth Beach; three sisters, Marguerite G. Salmons of Harrington, Emma Sibitzky of Clayton and Gloria Brittingham of Smyrna.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be in Hollywood cemetery , Harrington.

Lewis B. Ball,
retired plumber
Lewis B. Ball, 68, of Georgetown, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Ball was born in Thacker, W.Va., son of the late Lewis G. and Macie (Bowling) Ball.
He was a plumber for many years and worked for C&D Contractors, Wilmington.
He enjoyed horse racing, baseball and football.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Wyatt; a brother, William David Ball; and a loving companion, Dorothy Deagro.
Mr. Ball is survived by a daughter, Donna Pavusa, and her companion Kelvin Wyatt of Georgetown; two grandchildren, Christina Ball and Debra Ball; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Lewis Ball and Leia Jo Carey; five brothers, Jerry Ball of Columbus, Ohio, Thomas Ball of Freeburn, Ky., Harold Ball of Arkansas, John David Ball of Morganton, N.C., and Steve Ball of Matewan, W.Va.; two sisters, Emma Cisco of Morganton, and Mabel Watkins of Grove City, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at a later date.

Grace L. Scott,
retired counselor
Grace L. Scott, 82, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at home. She had a tender heart for those in need and was a powerful listener.
She served as head deaconess at Parkside Seventh-day Adventist Church for many years and could be counted on to bring a bountiful supply of food to potluck dinners. Her specialty was apple dumplings and pie.
Grace was the “unknown” church cleaner.
As a counselor at Elwyn Institute, Grace prepared arts and crafts projects for patients to enjoy.
Not much for retirement and unable to sit still, she made lap blankets for disabled veterans.
Grace was the wife of the late Charles Jr. She was predeceased by a son, David Lee, and a grandson named for him; and by two sisters, Evelyn Matter and Jean Miller. She is survived by her sons, Charles III (Rose) of Rehoboth Beach, and Craig of Swedesboro, N.J., with whom she lived; a sister, Esther Long; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Celebrations for Grace’s 82 congenial years were held at Daley Life Celebration Studio, Swedesboro, with a graveside service at Cornwall (Pa.) cemetery.
Stephen E. Drew,
Vietnam veteran
Stephen E. Drew Sr., 61, of Dover departed this life Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at home.
Mr. Drew was born Feb. 6, 1946, to the late Eleanor C. and Orlando M. Drew Sr.
He was raised in Clarksville.
Mr. Drew, or “Nicky” as he was passionately called by his family, attended Frankford School and graduated from the distinguished William C. Jason Comprehensive High School of Georgetown in 1964.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and later became the first African-American to enlist in the Dagsboro unit of the Delaware National Guard. During his stint in the U.S. Army, he was sent to the Vietnam War where he experienced great tribulation and was honorably discharged in 1969.
The jack of all trades and “master of many,” Mr. Drew moved to Dover in 1970.
He was employed with DelDOT’s Highway Department for 15 years.
Mr. Drew later became an apartment maintenance manager, which allowed him to use all of his skills. He also was a skilled pipe layer for Teal Construction for numerous years before having to retire due to injury. Mr. Drew was a skilled laborer who mastered carpentry, electrical operations, maintenance, plumbing and automotive mechanics.
He was a true “old school music connoisseur”; his passion for music was appreciated by all who came in contact with him.
Mr. Drew thoroughly enjoyed playing cards and sharing his knowledge of life, music and math to all who would listen.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen E. Drew Jr., in 2000.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 27 years, Cynthia Drew of Dover; six children, Darrell (Natalia) Woods of Phoenix, Nika (Kevin) Reid of Bayard, and Tamika Drew, Christina Drew, Catherine Drew and Claudia Drew, all of Dover; two stepchildren whom he had an integral role in raising, Felicia Lake of Baltimore, and Aaron S. Hall of Clarksville; three brothers, Martin A. (Sharon) Drew of Smyrna, Edward (Gracie Ann) Drew of Bishopville, and James (Vanessa) Deloach of Gumboro; two sisters, Catherine Walters and Claudia (Morris) Waters, both of Clarksville; four aunts, Frances Showell of Milton, Loretta Choudry of Cheswold, Louise Becton of Virginia, and Della Mae Drew of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Asha and Asante Woods of Phoenix, Az., K. Andrew Reid of Bayard, and Lynejah C. Drew of Dover; his mother-in-law, Maralyn Smith of Dover; two sisters-in-law, Beverly (Steve) Bordley of Dover, and Karen (Charles) Tucker of Felton; and a host of nephews and nieces and friends, to which his “wisdom and knowledge” will forever be cherished.

Vivian Emilie Brierly,

Vivian Emilie Brierly, 85, lost her battle with cancer on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at her residence.
She was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Oct. 30, 1921, to Emil Bernard and Amelia Marie Ichla.
In 1924, the family moved to northern New Jersey: Teaneck, Allendale and Ridgefield Park, where she attended elementary, grammar and the first year of high school. In 1936, the family moved to the Bronx, New York City, where she attended tenth grade at Isaac Walton High School. The family moved to Newark in 1937 where she graduated from Newark High School in 1939. After completing two years of study at the University of Delaware, she entered the workforce with DuPont Co.
She was married January 25, 1947, in West Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, by Pastor Kleffman. Since 2001, she has lived in Milton and has been a volunteer mentor in the HOSTS program at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School since its inception in the same year.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bernard William Ichla; husband, William Biggar Brierly; and companion, Dale Henry Yocum.
She is survived by her children, William of Milton, James of Worcester, Mass., Emilie and her husband William Truscott of North Wales, Pa., Christopher and his wife Joanne of Mullica Hill, N.J., and David and his wife Kathy of Springfield, Va.; her grandchildren, Marlena, Joshuah, Lauren, Benjamin, Ian, Kristin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A gravesite service for family and friends was held in Central cemetery , Millbury, Mass., where she was buried next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Vivian may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.
Mae Jakobowski,
Westinghouse retiree
Mae Naomi Jakobowski, 80, of Millsboro and formerly of Pasadena, Md., passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at her home.
She was born in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late Harry and Hilda Wasmus.
She was a retired tester for Westinghouse Electric Corp. of Maryland.
She was a member of the American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard and the AMVETS.
Mae enjoyed crochet, sewing, and reading gossip magazines.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard J. Jakobowski.
She is survived by a son, John Joseph Jakobowski; a daughter, Linda Kalister and her husband Martin; a sister, Beulah Nunnally and her husband Richard; a grandson, Ronnie L. Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Quinten Smith.
Services and burial are private.

Marion G. Jackson,

Marion Genenieve Jackson, 76, the daughter of the late Isaac Wilson Harmon Jr. and Myrtle Elizabeth Sammons Harmon, was born March 4, 1931, and departed this life September 29, 2007, at the Christiana Care Hospital surrounded by her children and family.
Marion was the fourth child born into a family of 13 children. She learned early about caring for others.
Sometimes life was not always easy or fair, but she made mistakes and learned from them. She became a mother early and had eight children of her own. Most of those years were spent being a single parent.
During Marion’s earlier years, she attended the Richard Allen School to the eighth grade. Marion stopped going to school and helped care for her siblings, allowing her mother to work. Marion was a woman of many talents.
She had worked and been involved in many things. Marion worked at the Showell poultry plant; she enjoyed doing hair in her home where family and friends gathered drinking coffee and talking about life.
Marion assisted with the Girl Scouts, polls for the election board and CHEER. She was owner of Lad & Lassie Day Care. Later, Marion worked in the cafeteria for the Indian River School District and Dollar General. Let’s not forget babysitting and helping to raise those grandchildren. Marion was a member of the Nanticoke Indian Association.
Marion enjoyed the years her daughter Thomasena played basketball and supported her at every game.
She loved to shop and stock up on things whether she needed them or not. She also loved each one of her animals - the animals she had and the ones she had inherited from the children. She mentioned several times while in the hospital, “Do you think my dogs have forgotten me?” Marion was caring and giving. When she saw something that needed to be done, she did it without being asked.
She also gave when it was not in her means to give.
No one forgot Marion. She had calls from so many friends that checked on her progress. Her trips to the dialysis center three times a week for over a year she called going to work. You were never left to wonder what she thought.
She would speak it plain and clear.
Marion had her favorites. She was very close to her sisters June Robbins, who has stood by her and has helped her during her illness, and Cecile Corsey, who has preceded her in death, and her special friend, Pauline.
In addition to her parents and sister, one son, Attlee Trevaine Jackson; and two brothers, Isaac Wilson III and Gussie Lindbergh Harmon, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children, Anthony Wendall Harmon, Ian deWayne and Marion Harmon, Earlyn Yolanda and Myron Leonard Jackson, Wyatt Barlow & Andrea Jackson, Thomasena and Joseph Parham, and Thomas Walter III and Diane Warrington. Those that have been just like her children: granddaughters Ashley Fullerand Onyae Williamson and grandson Trevaine Williamson. She leaves 22 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind four brothers, Conrad Hubert, Clarene Glento, Nelson Parker and Jan LeRonne Harmon; five sisters: Betty Bozetta Street, Mary Elenaa Street, Sadie Beatrice Miller, Dorothy Lorraine Johnson and Myrtle June Robbins; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends.
During this past month, Marion had gone through two major surgeries which left her paralyzed from her waist down. People saw a side of Marion they had not seen before.
She never once complained nor did she blame anyone. She received it with grace and was determined to walk through what had been handed to her.
Marion was making plans to come home. Her family believes the enemy did not defeat her and God was pleased and took her home.
Through the Suffering
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. I cry out to God most High, to God, who fulfils his purpose for me. He sends from heaven and saves me, rebuking those who hotly pursue me: God sends his love and his faithfulness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call from noon to 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Indian Mission cemetery , Millsboro.
