1919 - 2010

Thalithan Rachel Higgs, 91, of New Haven, departed this life, October 18, 2010.

Born in New Haven, CT, June 16, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William and Alice Higgs.

Ms. Higgs was a lifelong member of Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church and was employed for numerous years at Saxony Coat Factory as a Seamstress.

She was an avid collector of horse figurines.

She is survived by cousins, Louis and Judith Campbell and their daughter, Andrea Campbell; a niece, Margie Carlton (John); great nephews, Alphonso and Kenneth Flemming.

She was predeceased by brothers, William, Frederick and Joseph Higgs and a sister, Helen G. Higgs.

A celebration of Ms. Higgs' life will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Easter Downing
1914 - 2010

Easter Downing, 96, of Hamden, peacefully went to sleep on October 26, 2010.

Born October 25, 1914 in Halifax, NC, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Jane Downing.

Easter was a member of the House of God Church in New Haven where she served faithfully until her illness.

She leaves to mourn, two children, Susie Phillips and Gordon Pittman, nine grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; a sister, Louisiana Downing; a brother, Mike Downing; and other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law; two grandchildren; four sisters and a brother.

A celebration of Ms. Downing's life and legacy will be held Monday, November 1, 2010, at 11:00 AM at House of God Church, 230 Division St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Rosetta Leonia Brown
1916 - 2010

Rosetta Leonia Brown, 94, of New Haven, departed this life October 21, 2010. She was the widow of Ulysses Brown.

Born in Norfolk, VA, August 2, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Bartlett and Mary Ella Wilson.

She was employed for numerous years by Frank W. Stevenson Co. as an Operator and Seamstress.

Mrs. Brown is survived by a special niece, Linda Barnes of West Haven; her goddaughter, Mary Ella Smith (Tommy) of Mt. Vernon, NY; a special nephew, Anthony Barnes of Clinton, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ella M. Byrd-Herring.

A celebration of Mrs. Brown's life will be held Monday, October 25, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Alexis Nicole Ragland

Alexis Nicole Ragland. Survived by her mother, Marquita McElya; father, Alex Ragland; and twin sister, Eva Naderah Ragland.

Huirles L. Moye, Jr.
1927 - 2010

Huirles L. Moye, Jr. 83, of New Haven, departed this life October 1, 2010. He was the widower of Doris R. Moye.

Born in Ayden, NC, February 22, 1927, he was the son of Huirles L. Moye, Sr. and Helena Moye.

Prior to retiring, he was employed at Olin Corp. as a Machine Operator.

He was a long time member of Union Temple U.F.W. Baptist Church where he served for many years on the Trustee Board and the Male Choir. He was also a member of Springs of Life-Giving Waters Church.

He is survived by sons, Rossie (Dorothy), Ronald, Sr. (Sharon) and David E. Moye, Sr.; daughters, Diane Frasier (Marion), Dolly and Sandi Moye, and Crystal Wilson-Laster; brothers, Walter Earl and Kelly Bruce Moye; sisters, Mildred Slaughter, Gayther Bush, Alberta Moye, and Betty Newborn; twenty grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thelbert Moye; a sister, Ruby Moye; and a daughter in-law, Carrol Moye.

A celebration of Mr. Moye's life and legacy will be held Thursday, October 7, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Agape Christian Center, 90 Goffe St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Dorothy L. Daniels
1962 - 2010

Dorothy L. Daniels, 48, of West Haven, departed this life September 24, 2010.

Born in Greenville, NC, April 4, 1962, she was the daughter of Joe Ray Harper and the late Mable Daniels Harper.

Ms. Daniels was employed at Wal-Mart as a Night Stock Person.

In addition to her father, she is survived by a sister, Sylvia A. Hackett; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, a godson, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Ms. Daniels' life will be held Saturday, October 2, 2010, at 9:00 AM at New Flame Restoration Church, 1375 State St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Katherine Shaw
1942 - 2011

Katherine Shaw, 69, of New Haven, departed this life July 1, 2011. She was the widow of Joseph Shaw.

Born in Georgetown, SC, May 15, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Martha Canteen.

She is survived by sisters, Betty Hancock (Robert), Sarah M. Gore, Barbara White, Sylvia Fields (John) and Susan Canteen; brothers, Leonard Canteen, Jr. (Wilhelmina), Willie E. Canteen (Carolyn) and James Albert Canteen (Marie); grandchildren, Terry and M. Shaw; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Shaw; a brother, Nathaniel Canteen; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Gore and Frederick White.

A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Shaw's life and legacy will be held Friday, July 8, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Rock Tabernacle Ministries, 94 Webster St., New Haven.

Adeline Ruth Lane
1922 - 2011

Adeline Ruth Lane of Stafford, VA passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday July 20, 2011 at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA.

She was born May 25, 1922 in Ansonia, CT to the late Ethel Grace Burr Moore and William Moore.

She leaves to mourn, husband, Thomas Lane of New Haven; daughters Marlene Byrd of New Haven, Janice Riles of West Haven and Ava Johnson of Stafford, VA; and a son, Thomas Lane of Atlanta, GA.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 9:00 A.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.

George Murray
1935 - 2011

George Murray, 75, of New Haven, departed this life August 20, 2011.

Born in Kingstree, SC, October 13, 1935, he was the son of the late John H. and Odell Murray.

Prior to retiring, he was employed at Farrell Corp. as a Welder.

He is survived by his wife, Lula P. Murray; daughter, Stacey Murray-Taylor; son, Sydney Murray; two grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by five brothers and sisters.

A celebration of Mr. Murray's life and legacy will be held Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Cora Kilpatrick Bell
1918 - 2011

Cora Kilpatrick Bell, 93, of New Haven, departed this life November 6, 2011. She was the widow of Benjamin Bell.

Born in Greenville, NC, September 12, 1918, she was the daughter of the late George and Julie Blount Kilpatrick.

Mrs. Bell was a member of Pitts Chapel UFWB Church where she served on the Mother's Board, Missionary Board, Choir #1 and the Music Ministry.

She is survived by daughters, Jessie Powell and Lillie Mae Bell Kilpatrick; a stepdaughter, Delores Brito (Alphonse); a granddaughter, Gweniver Bell; nine great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her grandchildren; Julie Cotten and Laurence Bell; son in-law, Bishop Jonathan Powell; a brother, Jesse Kilpatrick; and a sister in-law, Catherine Kilpatrick.

A celebration of Mrs. Bell's life and legacy will be held Friday, November 11, 2011 at 12:00 P.M. at Pitts Chapel Church, 64 Brewster St., New Haven. Viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 A.M. -12:00 P.M. Burial will be Saturday at 10:00 A.M. in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
