Frank E. Terry
1927 - 2011
Frank E. Terry was born September 3, 1927 in Cairo, IL and entered peaceful rest on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was a fun-loving patriarch with an effervescent and joyful spirit that inspired those around him constantly. He was the son of the late Henry and Marine Terry.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Terry; daughter, Gilda L. Southerland; son-in-law, Duke V. Southerland; three grandsons, Frank "Dutch" M. Terry III, Attorney Vincent M. Southerland (fiance Ndidi Oriji), and Chad A. Southerland; several special nieces and nephews; a special family friend, Herbert L. Wilson; and an abundance of friends and acquaintances.
He was predeceased by a son, Frank Michael Terry; sisters, Dorothy Ruth Williams and Karnese Jones; and a brother, Mactheron Brown.
Frank had a wonderfully rich and full life and was employed for many years by the Connecticut Post newspaper (formerly Bridgeport Post), retiring in 1995.
He defended our country through his service in World War II and lived in several locations throughout the United States before he settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut with his wife in 1957. He was an avid golfer, loved playing pool and reading. He also enjoyed daily activities at the Golden Hill Senior Center.
His sense of humor was unparalleled, often finding joy and a reason to laugh and smile in the every day events of life, all while motivating others to do the same. He lived for his family and brought light and hope to those with whom he connected. Throughout his health battles, the beauty of his disposition shone even brighter as he continued to give a warm smile and thumbs up to every visitor and loved one. He taught all those who came in contact with him valuable lessons about living life abundantly, happily and resiliently.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Mr. Terry's life and legacy will be held Friday, February 4, 2011, at 12:00 PM at Stratford Baptist Church, 131 Huntington Rd., Stratford. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 11:00-12:00. Burial will be in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.
May Ellis
1926 - 2011
May Ellis, 84, of New Haven, departed this life January 10, 2011. He was the husband of Dollie Ellis.
Born in Lloyd, FL, August 29, 1926, he was the son of the late Joe and Ginnie Ellis.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Schiavone Co. as a Crane Operator.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Willie Joe, Bennie and Bobbie Ellis; a daughter, Mary Ellis; twenty-three grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by ten brothers, three sisters and three grandchildren.
A celebration of Mr. Ellis' life and legacy will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 9:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
Pamela "Ms. U.S.A." Caddell
1967 - 2011
Pamela "Ms. U.S.A." Caddell, 43, of New Haven CT, departed this life on January 12, 2011.
She was born in New Haven, CT on August 30, 1967 to Fannie and Chester Caddell.
She graduated from Lee High School in 1985. Pam was a committed employer of Schick Manufacturing Inc for the past 11 years.
In addition to her parents, Pam will be deeply mourned and sadly missed by her children; Desmond Caddell and Thomas Boyd Jr of New Haven, CT; and a grandson, Desmond Caddell Jr. Pamela is also survived by a sister, Priscilla Lacey; brothers, James Lacey (Darlene) and Jarvis Caddell; fiance, John Morangello; stepsons, Anthony and Donovan Morangello; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Dinea Lacey.
A celebration of Pamela's life and legacy will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew's UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Willis F. Diggs
1947 - 2011
Willis F. Diggs, lovingly known as "Butch, " departed this life March 30, 2011. He was the widower of Eleanor E. Diggs.
Born in Derby, CT, December 29, 1947, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Carolyn Diggs.
Mr. Diggs served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and earned numerous medals including the Purple Heart. At the time of his death, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs as a Community Case Manager.
He was an advocate for the needy. He worked as Facilities Director and Director of Operations for the Connecticut Food Bank; Executive Director of the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen; Director of Operations for Youth Continum; as well as numerous other non-profit organizations. He had also been employed as Service Manager at Whalley Avenue Exxon.
Mr. Diggs is survived by his sisters, Jacqueline S. McGraw and Felicia D. McLean (Charles); stepchildren, Wayne, Gerard, Michael, Mark and Debra Davenport; two step grandchildren; a niece, Stacey Hampton (Todd); nephews, Walter, Duane (Damaris) and Dwight (Alison) McGraw and Bryan McLean; great nieces, great nephews, cousins, an aunt, Harriet Diggs; the London family; a loving and supportive companion, Ruth Omole; and a host of family, friends and people who loved him.
A celebration of Mr. Diggs' life will be held Monday, April 4, 2011, at 10:00 AM at United Church on the Green, 270 Elm Street, New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-10:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Barbara Yvette Johnson
1927 - 2011
Barbara Yvette Johnson of Hamden died on January 14, 2011 at the age of 83. She was the beloved wife of the late Preston George Johnson, Jr.
Barbara, known as Yvette, was the daughter of the late Sarah Davenia and Moses Morrison.
Yvette graduated from Cedar Hill High School in Cedartown GA, before moving to New Haven in 1946.
After graduating from the New Haven School of Hairdressing and becoming a beautician, she co-owned Ruvettes Beauty Salon in New Haven.
Active at Community Baptist Church, she was an usher, a member of the Pastor’s Aid Committee and the Ladies Club.
Yvette was the mother of Larry Johnson (Julia), South Dennis, MA; Preston Neal Johnson (Josie), Westampton, NJ; and the late Susan Johnson. Yvette is survived by her sisters, Mildred Moore and Sara Dirton; her grandchildren, Nina Palmer, Diane, Claire, Lawrence and J. Ashleigh Johnson, Josanna Cabrera, Zeina Peterson, and her great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Maxwell, Myles and Jacob Palmer and Janae, Elijah, and Nevaeh Carbrera. She is also survived by a special cousin, Janice Laster (Horace); a dear friend, Julia Long; her brother-in-law James Fisher and a host of other relatives.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Marjorie Norwood, Geraldine Farley, Hazel (Jean) Fisher and her brother, Harold Morrison.
Services will be held at Community Baptist Church, 143 Shelton Ave., New Haven, CT on January 20, 2011 with viewing at 9:30 A.M. followed by her homegoing service at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Beaverdale Memorial Park.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of CT, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518 or the Berean Scholarship Fund at Community Baptist Church.
Bernice Bowman
1924 - 2011
Bernice Bowman, age 86, of West Haven, passed on February 7, 2011 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Clarence “Bo” Bowman.
Born in New Haven, CT, February 9, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Daisy Johnson.
She was the devoted mother of Lynn M. Waters of New Haven and Clarence “Skip” Bowman Jr. of West Haven. She is also survived by special daughters, Matilda Gibbs of New Haven and Michčle Douyon of Haiti; grandchildren, William L. Waters (Tahnee), Tia Waters, Royal Gibbs and Tamera Flint; great grandchildren, Allan Gibbs, Asim Waters, Daquan Holland, Quanisha Morrison and Tiffany Gibbs; a sister, Lila Mae Holness of New Haven; nephews Gene Holness and Donald Holness; first cousin, Fannie Jackson of New Haven; a special long- time friend and supporter, John Purmont; and a host of people who called her Aunt or Cousin Bernice.
Mrs. Bowman was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Bowman.
She was a long-time resident of West Haven and a former member of the West Haven City Council where she represented the city’s Fifth District. She was the former President of the West Haven Federation of Democratic Women, the first African-American President of the Connecticut Federation of Democratic Women, member of the National Federation of Democratic Women and a former member of the Democratic National Committee.
Mrs. Bowman was active in many community statewide and national organizations including the Sojourner Network of Democratic Women, a founder of Project One Unlimited; a member of West Haven Black Heritage Committee and the West Haven Historical Society.
A celebration of Mrs. Bowman’s life and legacy will be held Friday, February 11, 2011, at 12:00 PM at Varick AME Zion Church, 246 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Howard Batchelor
1929 - 2011
Howard Batchelor, 81, of New Haven, departed this life January 10, 2011.
Born in Enfield, NC, May 29, 1929, he was the son of the late Henry M.T. and Sarah Batchelor.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at E&F Construction Company as a Foreman for 35 years. Mr. Batchelor was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his daughter, Monica Bowden; grandchildren, Raul "Duke" Velazquez, Tonisha Foster and Tylon Bostic; a brother, Linwood Batchelor; his companion, Lucy June Boomer and her granddaughter, Lucy "Little Lucy" Boomer; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Tony O'Neal; three brothers and a sister.

Esther Mae Huckabee

Esther Mae Huckabee, 85, of Cheshire, departed this life December 22, 2010. She was the widow of Willie Peters.
Born in Lenoir County, NC, April 12, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Fairro and Emma J. Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Eulla Oliver; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Frank A. and James Smith.
A private memorial service will be held.
Daniel E. Johnson
1958 - 2010
Daniel E. Johnson, 52, of Norfolk, VA, died December 19, 2010, in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Born in Middletown, CT, December 8, 1958, he was the son of the late Harry and Emily Fountain Johnson.
He resided in Middletown for several years before moving to Poughkeepsie, NY and later to Norfolk, VA.
Daniel was a member of New Mt. Carmel UHC of America in Sedley, VA.
He is survived by a son, Daniel Jackson of Poughkeepsie, NY; a daughter, ShaQuana Johnson of Sanford, FL; two sisters Pearl E. Williamson (John) of Virginia Beach, VA and Doris A. Rankins (James) of Norfolk, VA; his wife, Wendy Johnson; sisters in-law, Doris Johnson of Meriden, CT and Annette Fountain of Middletown, CT; uncles, Robert Fountain and Kirk Cockfield of Middletown, CT; and James Doer of S. Windsor, CT; aunts, Alma Doer of S. Windsor, CT, Ruth Fountain of Middletown and Dorothy Fountain of Doswell, VA; a special friend, Cynthia Perry of Middletown; six grandchildren; nine nephews; four nieces; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
Daniel was predeceased by brothers, John Fountain, Sr., Harry F. Johnson, Jr. and James Johnson.
