Eleanor Edwards
1932 - 2006
Eleanor Edwards, 74, of New Haven, CT departed this life on July 5, 2006 after a long illness.
Ms. Edwards was born in Snowhill, NC, on January 28, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Esther Edwards and Henry Bess.
Prior to her retirement in 1999, she was employed for 26 years by the Connecticut Mental Health Center as a psychiatric aide.
She is survived by daughters, Marion, Angela, Carolyn and Pamela Edwards, all of New Haven; sons, Duane Edwards of Middletown, CT and Sheldon Edwards of New Haven; a sister, Marylou Groom of New Haven; her adoptive sister, Sarah Nixon of New Haven; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ms. Edwards was preceded in death by brothers, Roy and Henry Edwards; sisters, Alma Lee Connor and Deloris Webb; and a son, Kevin Groom.
A funeral service in celebration of Eleanor's life will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at 11 AM at Christian Love Center, 154 Derby Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Doris Lanier Dada
1935 - 2008
Doris Lanier Dada, 73, of Hamden, CT and Lagos, Nigeria, passed away Tuesday morning, November 4, 2008 at St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven.
Doris was born in Bath, NC, the fourth of nine children to the late Beather Ormond and Daniel Lanier, Sr.
She attended local schools in Bath, graduating as the senior class valedictorian from Beaufort County High School in Pantego, NC. She graduated in 1957 from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC as her senior class president with a BA in sociology. She also pursued graduate studies at the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology in Oberlin, OH.
Doris married
Dr. Babalola Dada in 1964 and in 1968 they relocated with their daughter Abi to Lagos, Nigeria.
In 1975 during one of her family visits home to New Haven Doris became a member of Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church UCC and remained a member whenever she was in the US.
Doris is survived by her beloved daughter, Abinbola “Abi” Dada; six brothers, Dr. Jack (Becky) Lanier of Richmond, VA; Dr. Daniel (Kay) Lanier, Jr. of Chester, VA; Thomas (Patricia) Lanier of Cleveland, OH; Jesse (Barbara M.) Lanier of Suffield, CT; Ronald (Dr. Margie) Lanier of Stamford, CT; and Dr. Garrie (LaVonne) Moore of Rye, NY and two sisters, Lillian Owens of Carson, CA and Barbara E. Lanier of Hamden, CT; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends in Lagos, Nigeria and the US.
Besides her parents, Doris was also predeceased by her husband, Dr. Babalola Dada.
A celebration of Mrs. Dada's life and legacy will be held Monday, November 10, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. at Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ 217 Dixwell Ave., New Haven with Rev. Dr. John H. Scott, III officiating. Friends may call at the church from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
William M. Chandler
1948 - 2008
William M. Chandler, 60, of New Haven, departed this life October 13, 2008. He was the husband of Jewell Chandler.
Born in Bridgeport, CT, July 10, 1948, he was the son of the late Marvin and Elizabeth Chandler.
Mr. Chandler was a retired U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant.
In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memories, a son, William Chandler, Jr.; a daughter, Antwana Mulwee (Charles); stepsons, Terrence and Tarron Gray; a stepdaughter, Krystal Baines; brothers, Marvin Chandler, Jr., Martin and Jeffrey Chandler; sisters, Christine and Lee Chandler; eight grandchildren; a great grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mr. Chandler's life and legacy will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. at Salvation and Deliverance Church, 127 Thompson St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 8:00-9:00 a.m. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport.
Hattie M. Williams
1940 - 2009
Hattie M. Williams, 69, of New Haven, departed this life June 8, 2009. She was the wife of Raymond Williams, Sr.
Born in Pollocksville, NC, May 8, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John Ed Morris and Dora Bell Morris.
Mrs. Williams was employed at Yale University as Service Assistant to the Provost for 23 years.
In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, LaToya Williams and Diane Williams-Cooper; a brother, Robert "Bobby" Morris; a sister, Ethel Bell Gooden; goddaughters, Markita Wright and Brionna Cunningham; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Williams, Jr.; and brothers, James Earl Morris and Melvin Eugene Morris.
A celebration of Mrs. Williams' life and legacy will be held Monday, June 15, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at Joy Temple Church of Christ in Prayer, 424 Howard Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
Ann McHune
1927 - 2006
Ann McHune, 79, of Westport Ave., Norwalk, departed this life on August 10, 2006.
Ms. McHune was born in Ballcaris Portland, Jamaica, on March 11, 1927, daughter of the late Simeon McHune and Carolina Marson.
She is survived by daughters, Patricia Hines and Ann Sanders; sisters, Amanda Thompson, Agatha Forsythe and Lillian Beckford; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a son, Lloyd Cleveland.

Gloria Moore
1930 - 2005
Gloria Moore, 75, of 204 Goodrich Street, Hamden, died Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at the Hospital of St. Raphael.
Born in Robersonville, NC on January 7, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Marcellus Highsmith and Mabel Geneva Highsmith Andrews; stepdaughter of the late Claude Andrews. She resided in CT for 38 years where she served as a dedicated homemaker and faithful follower of Christ.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Rev. John F. Moore; four children, John R. Moore, Glorine McKnight, Lola McBride, and Major Flo Mack. She is also survived by three sons-in-law, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Monday, August 22, 2005, at 11am at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 255 Goffe St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10am-11am. Interment in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Henry "Hank" R. Lopes
1929 - 2005
Henry "Hank" R. Lopes, 76, of 727 Elm Street, New Haven, formerly of 60 Warren Street, New Haven, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 3, 2005, at the Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Health Center, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in New Haven on June 2, 1929, son of the late Gregory Tavaries and Rose Roberson Lopes.
Mr. Lopes is survived by daughters, Linda (James) Lopes Bolden of West Haven, CT and Pamela R. Lopes of New Haven, CT; sisters, Catherine L. Lloyd, Helena L. Newton, Alberta L. Lester and Mary L. Sherrod, all of New Haven, CT; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a goddaughter, Christina Clomon of Atlanta, GA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his former wife, Eardie Alston Lopes; daughter, Regina Maud Lopes; sister, Anna L. DeBoise; foster mother, Maud Lewis Leal and a great granddaughter, Iyanna Regine Roberts.
Henry was an avid cyclist, swimmer, and an accomplished musician. He was a former organist for Saint Martin dePorres Church, and often played the piano at senior centers and for his friends and family. Mr., Lopes was a former prep-cook at the Hospital of St. Raphael and worked for many years at General Tire. He retired in 1991 from Charlie's Tire Repair. He was a member of Teamsters Local 443. Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., presented Henry the City of New Haven Department of Elderly Services Proclamation to honor him as Alderperson for May 2001.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 10, 2005, at 10am in Saint Martin dePorres Church, 136 Dixwell Ave., New Haven, CT. Friends may call at the church from 9am-10am. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven, CT.
Clarence B. Copeland
1944 - 2006
Clarence B. Copeland, 62, of New Haven, departed this life on January 24, 2006.
Mr. Copeland was born January 21, 1944, in Perry, GA, son of the late Joseph and Mattie Copeland.
He was employed by Dee's Rubbish Removal Co.
Mr. Copeland is survived by a son, Ricky Copeland; sisters, Mattie Williams and Joanne Swint; his companion, Evelyn Lassic; two grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Eloise Redmond.

Mary R. Burrell
1920 - 2008
Mary R. Burrell, 88, of New Haven, departed this life October 27, 2008 in New Haven. She was the widow of Burnell A. Burrell, Sr.
Born in Atlantic City, NJ, June 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Polite.
She was a longtime member of Ebenezer Chapel Church.
Mrs. Burrell leaves to cherish her memories, a son, Burnell A. Burrell, Jr.; a daughter in-law, Patricia Burrell; an adopted daughter, Dorothy Cooper; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A daughter, Bernice Gray and three brothers preceded her in death.

Eleanor Henderson

Eleanor Henderson, 100, of New Haven, departed this life on April 22, 2006. She was the widow of Arthur (Ozzie) Henderson.
Mrs. Henderson was born December 31, 1905, in Philomath, GA, daughter of the late Allen Wright and Emma Maxey Wright.
She is survived by sons, Albert (Viola), Louis (Alva) and William Eugene Henderson; daughters, Fannie Hood, Louise Hoff, Inez Barrett-Williams and Virginia Long; 40 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sons, Elmer, Ozzie Jr., Andrew and Frank Henderson; a daughter, Ayerele Winn; 2 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
A funeral service in celebration of Eleanor's life will be held Thursday, April 27, 2006, at 11 AM at Mt. Zion Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 64 Marlboro St., Hamden. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
