1927 - 2008

Barbara Naomi Tinsley, 80, of New Haven, departed this life May 16, 2008. She was the widow of Alfred Tinsley.

Born in Hampton, VA, May 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Nettie Washington.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed at AT&T as an Information Operator.

Mrs. Tinsley is survived by her brothers, George William, Burl and Joe Louis Washington; sisters, Catherine and Nettie J. Washington and Gwendolyn Julia Chisman; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by brothers, Benjamin and Francis Washington.

Funeral service and burial will be held in Hampton, VA.

Estelle Ross Williams Walston
1909 - 2006

Estelle Ross Williams Walston, 97, departed this life on November 9, 2006.

Born in Rocky Mount, NC on June 6, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Ross.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Yale University.

Mrs. Walston is survived by a daughter, Willie Marie Norman; grandchildren, Verna and Garlyn Norman; foster grandchildren, Randy Gaines, Sandy Shipman and Darrel Nixon; a cousin, Lillian Hill; a dear friend, Thelma Thompson; 7 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands, Caesar Williams and James Walston; a sister, Pearl Carr; and a grandson, Uriah Ervin Norman.

Graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at 11 AM at All Saints Cemetery.

Miriam Doggett-Guest
1938 - 2009

Miriam Doggett-Guest, 70, of New Haven, departed this life June 19, 2009. Born in Brooklyn, NY, July 23, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Eleanor Worsley Doggett.

She was employed at Regional Network of Programs in Stratford, CT as a Registered Nurse.

Mrs. Doggett-Guest was a member of Agape Christian Center. She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Jonathan, Timothy, Mark, David and Daniel Guest; daughters, Julianne and Stephanie Guest; her former spouse, St. Julian Guest; a sister, Renee Scott; sixteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; her best friend, Mae Gibson Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen L. Guest; sisters, Renee Doggett and Effie Doggett-Brown; and a great granddaughter, Antonae M. Scott.

A celebration of Mrs. Doggett-Guest's life and legacy will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at Agape Christian Center, 90 Goffe St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Dianna L. Wade
1950 - 2008

Dianna L. Wade, 58, of Grovetown, GA. A celebration of Ms. Wade’s life and legacy will be held Friday, December 19, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Joseph Chestine Massenburg
1942 - 2005

Joseph Chestine Massenburg, Sr., 63, of New Haven, passed away on June 30, 2005, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT.

He was the husband of Ida Brown Massenburg of New Haven and the father of Joseph Chestine Massenburg, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.

Mr. Massenburg was born February 25, 1942, in Petersburg, Va., to the late George and Esther Jones Massenburg.

He was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Middletown.

Other survivors include a brother, George Massenburg of Petersburg; sisters, Jean (Kenneth) Miller of New York, Linda Anderson of Boston and Sandra (Milton) Chandler of Ettrick, Va.; an aunt, Virginia Barlow of New York; sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews; and a future daughter-in-law, Crystal Venery of Virginia Beach.

Friends may call Sunday, July 3, 2005, from 5pm-8pm at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Funeral service and burial will be held in Petersburg, Va on Wednesday, July 6, 2005.

Elliott E. Gomes
1940 - 2009

Elliott E. Gomes "Coach Elliott, " 68, of New Haven, CT., passed away peacefully after a long illness, Friday, June 5, 2009 in CT Hospice, with his daughter and his sister at his bedside.

Mr. Gomes was the son of the late Jose Gomes and late Annie L. Gomes. He was born in New Haven, CT, on July 16, 1940.

Prior to retiring, Elliott was employed by the City of New Haven Parks & Recreation Department.

He served in the US Military and worshiped at the Way of the Cross Bible Way Church, Inc. in New Haven, CT.

Elliott leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter; Yvonne Gomes, her mother; Alice Pritchett (very special person); grandchildren, Alisha Suggs and William Barnes III.; great granddaughter, Jayli Marie Yvonne Suggs-Livingston; his aunt, Ann Lee Traynham, all of New Haven, CT; brothers; Alfred "Ollie" Gomes of New Haven, August Gomes (Nancy) of San Francisco, CA; James "Virgil" Gomes (Johnnie) of Chattanooga, TN, Patrick Gomes of Oakland, CA., a sister; Gloria V. Ammons of Hamden, CT; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and special friends.

In addition to his parents, Elliott was predeceased by sisters; Murdell Gomes, Agnes L. Richardson and Nancy Rose "Mae" Shaw; brothers, Jose Gomes, Anthony Gomes and Harold Gomes; his grandmother; Agnes Rebecca Golds Perry; grandfather; Andrew Moore; uncles, James Legree and James Perry; and an aunt, Catherine Perry.

A celebration of Mr. Gomes' life and legacy will be held Friday, June 12, 2009, at 12:00 P.M. at Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church, 782 Orchard St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 A.M-12:00 P.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Rev. Grady W. Kirkland, Jr.

Rev. Grady W. Kirkland, Jr., 62, beloved husband of Dr. Earnestine B. Kirkland, passed away peacefully at his home, 1781 Ella Grasso Blvd., New Haven, CT, on the morning of September 20, 2005.

Rev. Kirkland, the eldest of four children born to Grady W. Kirkland and Addie Louise Surgeon Kirkland, started life in Summit, NJ on July 7, 1943. He graduated from Madison High School in 1961.

He earned a BS Degree from Morris College in Sumter, SC where he was a star baritone in the Morris College Chorale and a star tight end on the football team. His advance degrees included a Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha; a 6th Year Professional Diploma from Southern CT State University where he was enrolled in the Doctoral Program; and a Bachelor's of Divinity from Boulden Institute, Wilmington, DE.

Rev. Kirkland served as a SP4 in the army during the Vietnam War and was rendered 40% disabled during his engagement in the army. He was awarded the Purple Heart prior to his honorable discharge in 1967.

He was a guidance counselor in the New Haven Public School System for the past 35 years with the exception of his two years in South Carolina. He worked directly with and provided leadership to many administrators, teachers and students to ensure that students received quality education to pursue the careers or vocations of their choice. Rev. Kirkland received many letters of recognition and awards from the school system for his educational involvement with students.

Grady or "Kirk" as some fondly called him, was an adjunct professor at Gateway Community College for the past fifteen years teaching human service and psychology courses.

For the past decade, Rev. Kirkland was pastor of several churches in the Union American Methodist Episcopal Conference. He was particularly proud of his last pastoral assignment where he was founder and pastor of the Miracle Temple Union American Episcopal Parish in New Haven, CT.

He was a member of many professional organizations and affiliations.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Carlos DeLon and his wife Chrisdena and Christopher Grady; three sisters, Linda Carol Gray (Walton) of Goochland, VA and Joyce Lee and Janet Louise Kirkland of Morristown, NJ; a beloved granddaughter, Victoria Jeanette; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were dear to him. He was predeceased by his parents.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at 10am at St. Paul UAME Church, 1267 Chapel Street, New Haven.

Entombment will be in Beaverdale Mausoleum. Family will receive friends at the church Monday, September 26, 2005, from 6pm-8pm. Friends may also call at the church, Tuesday from 9am-10am.

Hazel Moore Luckes
1931 - 2005

Hazel Moore Luckes, 74, of Central Ave., Bridgeport, died on September 29, 2005.

Mrs. Luckes was born in White Oak Township, NC, on September 16, 1931, daughter of the late John and Abbie Dudley Taylor.

She was employed by the Eisenhower Senior Center in Bridgeport.

Mrs. Luckes is survived by daughters, Valerie (Jim) Turner and Kimberly (James III) Coleman; sons, Christopher (Alisa) Moore and Stewart and Darryl Moore; a brother, Frederick Taylor; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by brothers, John Taylor, Jr. and Willie Taylor.
Funeral service and burial will be held in Maysville, NC.

Dorothy "Dot" Patton
1927- 2006

Dorothy "Dot" Patton, 78, of New Haven, departed this life on April 24, 2006.

She was born June 10, 1927, in York County, SC, daughter of the late Eddie Rankin and Odessa Sadler Wilson, and stepdaughter of the late Rev. CW Wilson.

Mrs. Patton had been employed by the Hospital of St. Raphael as a Registered Nurse as well as by the State of Connecticut as a Social Worker. Upon her retirement in 1980, she entered the field of private nursing.

Dot leaves to mourn, sons, Ronald Gambrell and Garland Eugene Patton, Sr. (Cathy); sisters, Mae Helen Miller (Joe), Margaret Boyd, Sharon Carr (Kirk) and Gloria Rankin; brothers, Sam, David and JW Wilson and Major Rankin; a stepdaughter, Sandra Reed; a son in-law, Rowland Reed; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by her spouses, Jessie Gambrell and Eugene Patton; and sons, Charles, William and Jessie Gambrell.

A funeral service in celebration of Dorothy's life will be held Monday, May 1, 2006, at 11 AM at Ebenezer Chapel Church, 50 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Mya E. Randolph
2008 - 2008

Mya E. Randolph, infant daughter of Natasha Randolph and Malek Long, departed this life July 28, 2008.

Mya was born, July 10, 2008 in New Haven, CT.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her twin sister, Aniaya Randolph; her maternal grandmother, Bridgett Anderson; and a host of other relatives.

A sister, Angelica Long predeceased her.

Graveside service will be held Friday, August 1, 2008, at 12:00 PM at Beaverdale Memorial Park.

James Edward "Rock" Murphy
1951 - 2007

James Edward "Rock" Murphy, 56, of New Haven, died May 29, 2007 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Lorine Murphy.

James was born April 6, 1951, in Camden, SC, son of Mabell Robinson and the late Abraham Carolina.

He served as a deacon at Beth El Ministry of Grace.

In addition to his wife and mother, James is survived by four sons; three daughters; twenty grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters. He was predeceased by a great-grandchild. A celebration of James' life and legacy will be held Sunday, June 3, 2007 at 7:00 pm at Beulah Heights Church, 782 Orchard St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 6:00-7:00 pm. Burial Monday at 9:00 am in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
