Eugene "Buster" McCown
1940 - 2007
Eugene "Buster" McCown, 67, of Hamden, departed this life August 17, 2007 at CT Hospice. He was the widower of Carrie P. McCown.
Born in Hemingway, SC, August 3, 1940, he was the son of the late Dave and Ethel McCown.
Prior to retiring, Mr. McCown was employed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield and had been previously employed for many years at Seamco Co.
He is survived by his children, Angleus Jamison, Wanda Marshmon (Oliver), Janice Goodman (Michael) and Myra McCown all of West Haven, Carol Jeanie McCown-Felton of Baltimore, MD, and Bernadino "Bernie" McCown of Hamden; a sister, Ora B. Frazier (George) of Hemingway, SC; twelve grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, Henry Rollins, Odell, Richard, Dave, Jr., Robert Lee and James I. McCown; and a sister, Annie D. Moore.
A celebration of Mr. McCown's life and legacy will be held Thursday, August 23, 2007, at 10:00 AM at St. Paul UAME Church, 150 Dwight St. (corner of Chapel St.) New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-10:00 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Rosa Mae Lee Fair
1923 - 2009
Rosa Mae Lee Fair, 86, of New Haven, passed away July 22, 2009. She was the widow of James Fair, Sr.
Born in Abbeville, SC, January 10, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Jefferson Lee, Sr. and Georgiana Lee.
She was a member of St. Matthew's UFWB Church.
Mrs. Fair is survived by daughters, Barbara and Selina Fair, Roseann Watts and Cynthia Thompson; sons, Harvey and Timothy Fair, Sr.; siblings, Frank Lee, Sr. and Sally Lee; 27 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, James Fair, Jr.; a daughter, Terrie Allen; sisters, Daisy Hill and Lucinda Rattley; and brothers, Naro Lee, Sr. and Jefferson Lee, Jr.
A celebration of Mrs. Fair's life and legacy will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew's UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Ave. New Haven. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Elbart "Hot Dog" Ward
1930 - 2007
Elbart "Hot Dog" Ward, 77, of New Haven, departed this life August 13, 2007. He was the widower of Robina Ward.
Born in Passaic, NJ, March 24, 1930, he was the son of the late Frank and Theresa Ward.
Mr. Ward was a licensed Hairstylist and the owner of Ward's House of Style.
He is survived by his children, Deborah Bailey, Alfred Jackson and Albert Ward; siblings, Benjamin and Thomas Ward, Margery Carnell, Mary Withers, Caroline Taylor and Catherine Onque; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a sister, Gracie Ward.
A celebration of Mr. Ward's life and legacy will be held Saturday, August 18, 2007, at 9:00 am at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
Elnora James
1923 - 2009
Elnora James, 85, of New Haven, departed this life May 9, 2009.
Born in Scotland Neck, NC, November 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Maggie James.
She was employed for numerous years at Yale New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of St. Raphael as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant.
Ms. James is survived by a daughter, Lorinda Thompson; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Ms. James’ life and legacy will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 9:00 A.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 8:00-9:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Janee' Nicole Wallace
1990 - 2006
Janee’ Nicole became a blessing to Cathy Gambrell and Marty Wallace on February 13, 1990. She died suddenly as a result of an auto accident on November 3, 2006.
Janee’ was a Junior and an honor student at Hamden High School. She was a very good student that was looking forward to touring colleges to major in Electrical Engineering at a prestigious HBCU. She was an avid reader and text message queen and had recently received top scores on her CAP tests. Janee’ was a member of the Black and Hispanic Student Union and the Human Relations Club. She recently visited the Hamden Middle School to discuss the issues of “Bullying.”
During her youth, Janee’ was a team member of the Town of Hamden’s Youth Soccer Association for approximately 7 years.
She was a member of the Church of Christ throughout her life. Most recently she was the cheery hostess at IHOP on the weekends.
Janee’ loved spending time with her family and friends. She loved to travel and had done a lot of it this year with another planned trip in December. She made lasting friendships everywhere she went. Janee’ was a loving person that was loved by many.
She will be missed by her brothers, Reece Wallace-Gambrell and Chris Wallace; her grandparents; Ann Clomon and Kapana and Coleman Wallace; her aunts, Sandra Wallace and Lauren Edmondsen; her sister-cousin, Chauna Wallace, stepparents, Michael Fletcher and Janice Wallace and a host of loving uncles, cousins and great friends.
Her smile, loving nature, wit, humor and growing wisdom will be missed as she touched so many.
A funeral service celebrating Janee’s life will be held Thursday, November 9th at 11:00a.m at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St., New Haven. Viewing at the church from 9:00a.m. – 11:00a.m. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Joseph Covington
1936 - 2007
Joseph Covington, 71, of New Haven, departed this life May 1, 2007.
Born in Scotland County, NC, February 26, 1936, he was the son of the late Massie Covington.
Prior to retiring, he was the owner of Whalley Hardware Store.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his live-in companion, Alfreda Walker; sons, Joseph Covington, Jr. and Jeffrey Covington; a daughter, Janice Covington; 4 grandchildren; a godchild; and other relatives and friends.

Ruby P. Nichols

Ruby P. Nichols, 67, of New Haven, CT, departed this life May 10, 2007.
Born in Rockingham, NC, March 2, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Nollie and Katie Walker Patterson.
Ms. Nichols had been employed by U.S. Surgical Corp. and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Kashif Abdul-Karim and Curtis W. and Shelia Nichols all of New Haven, CT; siblings, Lula Murray of New Haven, Thelma Nicholson and Pauline Wall both of Rockingham, NC and Robert Patterson of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Candice L. and Cameren W. Nichols and Samira, Gabriel and Joshua Abdul-Karim all of New Haven; aunts, Josie Walker and Edna Brewington; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Ms. Nichols’ life and legacy will be held Monday, May 14, 2007, at 11:00 am at Faith Baptist Church, 39 Emma St., West Haven, CT. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
In honor of Ms. Nichols’ life, the family is asking all those attending her service of celebration to wear something pink.
Bernice Cox
1928 - 2009
Bernice Cox, 80, of New Haven, departed this life June 6, 2009. She was the widow of John A. Cox.
Born in Greenville, NC, November 21, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Augusta and Helen Roach.
Mrs. Cox leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Daniel Roach, Sr. (Margaret) and Robert E. Small, Sr.; a daughter, Bernice Small; a sister, Ella Stanley; eight grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Lee House, Sr., Augusta Roach, Jr., and Richard and William Tom Roach; sisters, Elizabeth House, Dora Green, Pearlie Owens, Cherry Jackson, Catherine Langley and Della Smith.
A celebration of Mrs. Cox's life and legacy will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009, at 9:00 A.M. at God's Miracles Unlimited Outreach, 1441 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Friends may call at the church from 8:00-9:00 A.M. Entombment will be in Beaverdale Mausoleum.
James Earl Gray
1918 - 2009
James Earl Gray, 90, of New Haven, departed this life January 9, 2009 at CT Hospice after a long illness. He was the widower of Dorothy Miller Gray.
Born in Bowling Green, VA, December 14, 1918, he was the son of the late Elwood and Ethel Gray.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for many years.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his children, James Gray, Jr., June Jones (Norman), Gloria Abrams, Doris Davis (Simuel), Johnest Clark, Kenneth Gray, Gigi Snipes, Herbert Gray and Minister Sandra Gray; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; six sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister and five brothers.
