Ida Tyson, 84, of Hamden, died April 24, 2007. She was the widow of James J. Tyson.

Born in Ansonia, CT, February 7, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Lillian L. Goldson Watts.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Francis, Vernon, Louis and George Watts, and her sister, Ethel Beatrice Carr.

She is survived by a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were private.

Mae Ida Hill
1942 - 2007

Mae Ida Hill, 64, of West Haven, CT, departed this life April 24, 2007 at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the loving wife of James Hill.

Born in Natcheze, MS, September 15, 1942, she was the daughter of the late George Green, Jr, and Lucinda Green.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memories, sons, Terrence Hill (Cynthia) and Gerreth Hill; a daughter, Deloris Hill; brothers, L.T., Roger, Randolph, Jed and Nelson Green; sisters, Schan Miller, Elnora, Myra and Vera L. Green and Sherry Williams; three grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by a son, James Hill, Jr. and brothers, Robert Lee Green, David and Tony Green.

A celebration of Mrs. Hill's life and legacy will be held Monday, April 30, 2007, at 11:00 am at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 266 Shelton Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 am. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Jon "Rodney" Sykes
1959- 2005

Jon "Rodney" Sykes, age 45, of West Haven, departed this life December 2, 2005.

Mr. Sykes was born in New Haven, CT, December 25, 1959, son of Juanita Sykes Dean.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughters, Leonette Rainey and Jontae Sykes; sisters, Cheryl Sykes and Dawn (Robert) Parson; a brother, Lance (Karen) Sykes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Roosevelt Sykes and Rev. Lila Sykes; and his stepfather, Clarence Dean.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, December 8, 2005, at 11am at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 10am-11am. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Henry Hickman, Sr.
1915 - 2008

Henry Hickman, Sr., 93, of the Masonic Healthcare Center, Wallingford, departed this life June 20, 2008. He was the widower of Sadie Blair Hickman.

Born in Lee County, SC, April 15, 1915, he was the son of the late Henry and Julia Mashore Hickman.

During his years of residency in South Carolina, he was a member of the Masonic Temple Prince Hall #436 and upon relocating to Middletown, became a member of the George W. Crawford Lodge.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Hickman was employed at Wesleyan University as a Supervisor for 20 years and was also employed at Middlesex Hospital, Pelton's Pharmacy and Mohawk Manufacturing.

Mr. Hickman was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Middletown where he served as past chairman of the Deacons' Board, Father of the church and as a member of the Senior Choir, Male Chorus and the Ushers' Board.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving children, Ernest Hickman (Eileen), Frances Canteen, Julie Carraway (James), Bobbie Odell Hickman (Alice), Bertha Gaskins (Holley), Addie Gibson and William Rosado (Liz); twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A son, Henry Hickman, Jr.; a daughter, Mable Hickman; a brother, Isaac Hickman; a sister, Sue Dyson; and a grandson, Ronnie Canteen, predeceased him.

A celebration of Mr. Hickman's life and legacy will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 346 Butternut St., Middletown. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM with Masonic services beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Inc., 35 Cold Spring Rd., Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or to the American Diabetes Association, 306 Industrial Park Rd. Suite 105, Middletown, CT 06457.

Johney "Johnny" D. Walker
1988 - 2006

Johney "Johnny" D. Walker, 18, of New Haven, departed this life on August 23, 2006.

Johney was born in New Haven, CT, on August 18, 1988, son of John Phifer and Lynn Walker.

He was a student at Eli Whitney Technical High School.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his siblings, Michael, Darnell, Justice, Jonathan, Aaron, Andrea, Iesha, Quisha, Tyisha, Candice and Danielle; grandparents, Retha Walker, Julia Green and Ann Walter; uncles, Darrell Walker and Ashanti Hickson; stepmother, Deborah Phifer; and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service celebrating Johney's life will be held Thursday, August 31, 2006, at 11 AM at Agape Christian Center, 90 Goffe St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johney Walker Memorial Fund c/o NewAlliance Bank.

Stella Louise Fox
1945 - 2008

Stella Louise Fox, 62, of New Haven, departed this life October 22, 2008. She was the wife of Preston Fox, Sr.

Born in Dunn, NC, October 29, 1945, the daughter of Frances Thurman Stevenson.

Stella was employed for forty years at Sargent Manufacturing as an Assembler.

In addition to her husband and mother, she leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Felisha McIver (Ronald), Midreda and Kristina Fox; sons, Michael Thurman, Preston Fox, Jr. (Lynn) and Joseph Cox; brothers, James (Marilyn), George (Donna) and Ralph (Brenda); a sister, Floria all of North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mrs. Fox's life and legacy will be held Sunday, October 26, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Matthew's UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Dunn, NC, Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 1 p.m

Jacqueline Lanier
1961 - 2006

Jacqueline Lanier, 45, of New Haven, CT, departed this life on December 10, 2006.

Born in New Haven, CT on July 25, 1961, she was the daughter of Thomas Lanier, Sr. and the late Dorothy Lanier.

In addition to her father, she is survived by brothers, Thomas Jr., Anthony, Jonathan, Jeffrey and Dwayne Lanier and Kirk McCall; her stepmother, Patricia Lanier; companion, George Edwards; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service celebrating Ms. Lanier's life will be held Thursday, December 14, 2006, at 10 am at God's Miracles Unlimited Outreach, 1441 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Friends may call at the church from 9-10 am. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Juanita Johnson
1933- 2006

Juanita Johnson, 73, of New Haven, departed this life on May 21, 2006. She was the widow of Matthew Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Deatsville, AL, April 17, 1933, daughter of the late John B. and Lucener Wright Howard.

She was a member of Church of Christ.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by sons, Matthew Johnson, Jr. (Yolanda) and John Z. Johnson; a daughter, Monique Carroway (Robert); a brother, Eddie B. Howard; sisters, Annie Huckaby, Linda Guest, Claytonia Jenkins, Patsy McIver and Astoria Howard Ridley; 9 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service in celebration of Mrs. Johnson's life will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at 11 AM at Church of Christ, 16 Gem St., New Haven. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Carrie Lee White Pressley McCown
1940 - 2007

Carrie Lee White Pressley McCown, 66, of Hamden, departed this life January 16, 2007 at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the loving wife of Eugene McCown for 47 years.

Born in Nesmith, SC, August 26, 1940, she was the daughter of the late James and Josie Nesmith White and later reared by the late John and Mary Ethel Pressley.

Mrs. McCown was employed by the City of New Haven Board of Education for 41 years.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to mourn her children, Angleus Jamison, Wanda Marshmon (Oliver), Janice Goodman (Michael) and Myra McCown all of West Haven, Carol Jeanie McCown-Felton of Baltimore, MD and Bernadino "Bernie" McCown of Hamden; sisters, Rachael Hairston of Philadelphia, Etheleen Cunningham of Hemingway, SC and Pearlie Mae Napolean of New Haven; twelve grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services celebrating Mrs. McCown's life and legacy will be held Saturday, January 20, 2007, at 9:00 AM at St. Paul UAME Church, 150 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Frances Barnett
1909- 2005

Frances Elizabeth Antrum Barnett, 96, of New Haven, passed away peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital, Tuesday, December 13, 2005. She was the widow of William Edward Barnett, Sr and daughter of the late John Henry and Annie Louise Lewis Antrum. Frances was born in Society Hill, SC, April 19, 1909, and came to Ansonia, CT as a child.

She was a life long member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Left to mourn are her beloved daughters, Ann Brown, Harriett Hart, Naomi (William) Knox, Barbara Thompson and Ruth, Elkana and Pauline Barnett of New Haven and Marilyn Barnett of Clinton; 28 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her son, William Edward Barnett, Jr.; her daughter, Delores Flax; five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2005, at 10am at Macedonia Baptist Church, 243 Pershing Drive, Ansonia, with the Rev. Dr. David E. Penn, Sr., officiating.

Friends may call at the church from 9am-10am.

Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Frances' memory may be made to the Macedonia Baptist Church.
