1955 - 2006
Linda F. "Pie" Thomas, 50, of New Haven, departed this life on November 23, 2006.
Born in Bethel, NC on November 28, 1955, she was the daughter of Christine Thomas and the late Samuel Thomas.
She was a member of Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Latosha Thomas; a son, Marques Thomas; brothers, Samuel Thomas, Jr. and Arthur Staton; sisters, Celestine Thomas and Veronica Price; grandchildren, Jason and Jalen Thomas and Aaliyah Jackson; her long-time companion, Arthur Jackson; a sister in-law, Cassandra Daniels; godchildren, Ingrid Hines- Sledge, Wayne Miller and Skye Council; a godsister, Junie Cullums; a stepson, Arthur Jackson, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service celebrating Ms. Thomas' life and legacy will be held Friday, December 1, 2006, at 11 AM at Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Webster St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
John (Jake) Giles
1923 - 2010
John (Jake) Giles of North Haven passed away on May 1, 2010 at the age of 87.
He was born January 14, 1923 in Wilson, North Carolina.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lillie Giles Jones and Thomas Hall and his sister, Sarah Midgett.
In June of 1941, he graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in New York City going on to Howard University for one year. His college education was interrupted by the draft. John was a veteran of World War II being honorably discharged from the Army as a Corporal on December 30, 1946.
After 42 years of employment, he retired from the New Haven Post Office on September 26, 1986. He then began a new career becoming a certified nursing assistant, working for a variety of home health agencies.
John was a former member of the New Haven Knickerbockers Golf Club. He enjoyed competing in golf tournaments where he won many trophies.
He will be missed by his many second and third generation cousins, nieces and nephews who affectionately called him “Uncle Jakie”.
A special thanks to Dr. Jose Salvana, the dedicated staff at Yale New Haven Hospital and CT Hospice in Branford, CT who made his final days comfortable.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2010, 11 a.m. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight Street, New Haven, CT followed by interment in Beaverdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.
Cynthia Green
Cynthia Green, died June 24, 2007. Daughter of Maxine Green and sister of Yvonne, Sylvia, Crystal, Susan, Bernard, Jimmy and Lamont.
Memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28, 2007 at 6pm at Christian Training and Healing Center, 135 Bristol St., New Haven.
Jerline Gilliard
1945 - 2005
Jerline Gilliard, 59, of Quinnipiac Ave., New Haven, entered into eternal rest on September 21, 2005.
Ms. Gilliard was born October 12, 1945, in Georgetown, SC, to the late Rev. Henry Gilliard Sr. and Prudence Greene Gilliard.
She was employed by Pratt & Whitney for 39 years.
Ms. Gilliard is survived by children, Elisa and Myron Gilliard of New Haven, CT; a brother, Percy Oliver Greene of Charleston, SC; a granddaughter, Emyiah Gilliard and a goddaughter, Yvonne Hammonds, both of New Haven, CT; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends. She was predeceased by siblings, Lena Greggs, Lila Hamilton, Hardy, David and Thomas Gilliard.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2005, at 9:00am at Church on the Rock, 95 Hamilton St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 8:00am-9:00am. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Brian K. Walker
1956- 2005
Brian K. Walker, 49, of Norwich, CT, departed this life, November 23, 2005.
Mr. Walker was born in Newark, NJ, September 3, 1956, son of Lucretia Scott Donaldson and the late James Samuel Walker.
He was employed by Yale New Haven Hospital.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughters, Kimberly, Holly and Courtney Walker; a special friend, Debbie Mattei; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Friday, December 2, 2005, at 11am at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 10am-11am. Burial will be private.
Lance Harold Givens
1952 - 2006
Lance Harold Givens, 54, of New Haven, CT, died December 16, 2006 at the West Haven Veterans' Affairs Medical Center.
Born in Jamaica, Queens NY on February 18, 1952, he was the son of Harold Givens and the late Mary Susan Wooten Pinn.
Mr. Givens was a US Air Force veteran.
He leaves to mourn, his wife of 36 years, Karimah bint Abdul-Aziz (Anita Givens); daughters, Mignon Givens-Texidor, Eboni Givens-Henley, Brianna, Jennifer and Eileen Givens, Lanee Thomas and Alasha Alexander; a sister, Valarie Flake; brothers, Walter and Russell Pinn, Samuel Whitehead and Brett Givens; sons in-law, Tomas Texidor, Jr. and Tyrice Henley; eight grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Brian Givens.

Raymond Earl Bright
1938 - 2006
Raymond Earl Bright, 68, of Hamden, departed this life December 16, 2006.
Born in Winterville, NC on October 25, 1938, he was the son of the late Eddie Lee Bright and Thelma Pridgen Bright.
Raymond was known to all as "Mr. Ray."
He was previously employed by Winchester Repeating Arms. Mr. Ray was a savvy business man. Partnered with his late spouse, the lovely late Elsie Bright, they endeavored into many business ventures; their latest being the Ebony Lounge of New Haven, CT.
Mr. Ray was a member of St. Matthew's UFWB Church.
He is survived by sons, Raymond Bright and Todd Cotten (Belinda) of Hamden and Jerry Williams of Greenville, NC; daughters, Sylvia Williams and Christa Wilder (Clee) of Greenville, NC, Denar Joyner and Paula Davis of Texas and Deborah Cotten of Springfield, MA; a devoted daughter in-law, Monica Bright of Hamden; sisters, Lena B. Webb of Greenville, NC and Dorothy B. Anderson (Joseph) of Cheverly, MD; nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Bright.

Jeanette Johnson
1927 - 2009
Jeanette Johnson, 82, of New Haven, departed this life November 13, 2009. She was the widow of Elwood Johnson.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, March 15, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harry Adams, Sr. and Ruby Adams.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Robert “Bob” Johnson (Gloria); a brother, James Adams; three grandchildren, Daryl, Rob and Kevin Johnson; seven grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mrs. Johnson’s life and legacy will be held Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 10:00 A.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00 A.M. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Roy Carvin Jackson
1925 - 2006
Roy Carvin Jackson, 81, of New Haven, beloved husband of Dorothy Staten Jackson, departed this life on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at CT Hospice after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Jackson was born May 10, 1925, in Rome, GA, son of the late John and Myrtle Wills Jackson.
He resided in Milwaukee, WI for many years and moved to New Haven in 1950.
Mr. Jackson was employed by Seamless Rubber Co., Sealtest Ice Cream Co., and most recently, Winchester Repeating Arms prior to illness requiring him to retire.
In addition to his loving wife of 55 years, he is survived by seven daughters, Carol Winston (Nelson) of Meriden, CT, Doris Harris (William Earl) of Richmond, VA, Lorraine Jackson-Jones (Eustace Sr.), of West Haven, CT, Joyce R. Jackson (dear friend, Archie Bouie) of Hamden, CT, Gloria Jackson-Jones (Grady Sr.), Cathy Jackson-Bell (Carlton Sr.) and Karen Jackson-Williams (dear friend, Roosevelt McCrea) all of New Haven, CT; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Addie Jackson and a grandson, Roy Michael Jackson.
A funeral service in celebration of Mr. Jackson's life will be held Thursday, May 18, 2006, at 11 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 10-11 AM. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
June Frances Smith

June Frances Smith, 64, of New Haven, departed this life November 2, 2008. She was the widow of Joseph C. Smith.
Born in New Haven, CT, June 11, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ethel Simmons.
Prior to retiring, she was employed by the US Postal Service as a Supervisor.
She is survived by sons, Keith S. and Willie Cogdell; a daughter, Pangy D. Cogdell; a brother, Alfred Simmons; sisters, Lillian and Catherine Simmons; eight grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mrs. Smith's life and legacy will be held Friday, November 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Union Temple Church, 54 Platt St. (corner of Elm St.), New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
