Sophie Virginia Crane,
a lifelong Stamford resident, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000 at Stamford Hospital. She was 84.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Oct. 20, 1916, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Alexandria Thomas.
Mrs. Crane was a cashier at Dorr-Oliver in Greenwich. She also was a graduate from Stamford High School.
She is survived by two sons, Richard T. Swatland of Stamford and Robert Swatland of Pinellas Park, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Stanley Swatland; her second husband, James Crane; a brother, Joseph Thomas; and a sister, Ceil Rowe.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at Gallagher Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at St. Maurice's Church, 358 Glenbrook Road, Stamford.
Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery
in Darien.

William DeWitt Romig,
a Greenwich resident, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at home. He was 22.
He died of smoke inhalation during a house fire, according to his family.
Born Nov. 28, 1978, in Stamford, he was a son of Edward Franklyn Romig II of Ridgefield and Mary Stacy of Greenwich.
Mr. Romig was an avid rock climber, camper, surfer, skier and guitar player. He enjoyed gourmet cooking.
He played hockey with the Darien Youth Hockey League and was part of an Outward Bound program in North Carolina. He attended the Harvey School in Katonah, N.Y., where he was captain of the varsity lacrosse team.
He also resided in Alta, Utah, where he was a cook at the Alta Lodge.
He was employed at Go Vertical in Stamford and Wildfire Restaurant in Greenwich.
He was a member of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America and of the Sons of the American Revolution.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Liz Romig of Greenwich; and two brothers, Teddy Romig of Ridgefield and Stephen Dixon of Greenwich.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at Stanwich Congregational Church, Taconic Road, Greenwich. A reception will follow at the church.

William W. Erdman,
a Stamford resident, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000 at the airport in Phoenix. He was 59.
He died of a heart attack, according to his family.
Born Sept. 8, 1941, in Bucks County, Pa., he was a son of Hazel Claycomb of Palm Desert, Calif., and the late William Singmaster Erdman.
Mr. Erdman was chief executive officer of Simply Say, a voice recognition company in Tucson, Ariz. He worked for IBM for 18 years in various executive capacities until being named director of marketing in Canada in the early 1980s.
He also held senior executive positions with various communication companies, including Maxcell Cellular Communications in Washington , D.C., and Inter Digital Telecommunications in Philadelphia, where he was chief executive officer.
He lived in Stamford for 20 years and also had a home in Indian Wells, Calif. He was an avid skier, scuba diver and golfer. He was a member of Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich, Raven Golf Club in Tucson and Indian Wells Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Erdman of Stamford; a daughter, Alexandra Erdman of Stamford; and a sister, Jo Ann Brady of Calimesa, Calif.
He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth S. Erdman.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, Greenwich.

A. Bruce Aubrey of Lighthouse Point,
Fla., a former Stamford resident, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at home. He was 77.
He died of cancer, according to his family.
Born Nov. 3, 1923, in Stamford, he was a son of the late William Maynard and Gladys Blake Aubrey.
Mr. Aubrey was a World War II veteran who served in a hospital in Japan after the U.S. attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
He retired from Northeast Utilities in Stamford, where he worked for 42 years. He was a member of the Elks Club, the Umpire Association and Northeast Utilities Management Club in Stamford.
He also was a member of the First Congregational Church of Stamford, where he served as a deacon and member of the board of trustees.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Coway Aubrey of Lighthouse Point; a daughter, Linda Aubrey Hoyt of Darien; a son, Bruce Kent Aubrey of Fairfield; two brothers, William Maynard Aubrey Jr. of Bethlehem, Pa., and Byron Blake Aubrey of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2000 at Congregational Church of Boca Raton, 251 S.W. Fourth Ave., Boca Raton, Fla.
Burial is private.

Harry Tarpinian,
a Norwalk resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven. He was 76.
He died of acute leukemia, according to his family.
Born Jan. 15, 1924, in Hartford, he was son of the late Ephrem and Miriam Khachadourian Tarpinian.
Mr. Tarpinian was a Norwalk resident for almost 50 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
In 1964, Mr. Tarpinian co-founded the Ritar Ford car dealership in Norwalk. He was a member of the New Car Dealers Association. He later entered the real estate field with his own company, HT Realty.
He was a member of the Shore Haven Country Club and the Disabled American Veterans. He was president of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter and the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce. He recently celebrated 35 years with the Norwalk Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Tarpinian enjoyed golf and flying and held a commercial pilot's rating.
He is survived by two sons, James Tarpinian of Richland, Wash., and Harry Alan Tarpinian of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Heather Tarpinian of Norwalk; and four grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 15, 2000 at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk.
A funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000 at the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension, 1460 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull.
Burial with military honors will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk.
