Raymond T. Woods, 97, of Hazel St., New Haven, departed this life on August 29, 2006.
Mr. Woods was born in New Haven on August 9, 1909, son of the late John H. and Mary Ellen Woods.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Winchester Repeating Arms. He was a member of Mt. Zion Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Mr. Woods is survived by a daughter, Shirley M. Parker; sons, Henry E. and Roy E. Woods; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his spouses, Emma Woods and Elizabeth K. Woods; a son, Raymond Woods, Jr.; a daughter, Susan McCray; a stepson, Clifford Huckaby; and several brothers and sisters.
A funeral service celebrating Mr. Woods' life and legacy will be held Friday, September 1, 2006, at 11 AM at Mt. Zion Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 64 Marlboro St., Hamden. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
Julius R. Scott, Sr.
1917- 2005
Julius R. Scott, Sr., 88, of West Haven, died December 17, 2005. He was the husband of Dorothy Coleman Scott.
Mr. Scott was born in Gallatin, TN, January 30, 1917, son of the late Thomas J. and Mattie E. Scott.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a high school industrial arts teacher for the West Haven Board of Education and was also a WWII Army veteran.
Mr. Scott was a member of First Baptist Church in Milford for over 40 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Julius Scott, Jr.; daughters, Sharon Scott and Cheryl Scott Archie; grandchildren, Julius Scott III and Alexis and Cammera Archie; a sister, Sadie Vance; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at 10am at First Baptist Church, 28 North St., Milford. Friends may call at the church from 8am-10am. Burial in Newburgh, NY.
Edna Baker Carnegie
1912 - 2008
Edna Baker Carnegie, of New Haven, departed this life, October 12, 2008 at her home at the age of 96.
Born in New Haven, CT, February 26, 1912 to the late Willoughby Alva and Rachel Huggins Baker, Edna Carnegie became an educator and a leader in her community and her church. She taught for twenty-five years in the New Haven schools, and was instrumental in the building of the new Winchester School.
She was a founding member of the Elm Haven Housing Project tenants’ council, past president of the Dixwell Senior Citizens Club, board member of the Connecticut Afro-American Historical Society, and Vice-President of the Churchwomen United, U.S.A.- New Haven. She also taught Sunday school for 70 years at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she was a superintendent, a member of its Diocesan Board, and a licensed Layreader for the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. In 1948, she founded the Girls’ Friendly Society U.S.A.-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and remained its director.
Her memory is cherished by her son, Stanley Carnegie, Jr. of Virginia, her daughter, Joyce Carnegie Tivis, of Nevada, her grandchildren Christina Boxley and Robert Benjamin Tivis, great-grandchildren, sisters Eunice Royster of Bethany and Marion Green of North Haven, her brother Edward Baker of Delray Beach, Florida; nieces, nephews, relatives and New Haven friends and neighbors to whom she gave so much.
Edna was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Carnegie, Sr., and her siblings Joseph Baker, Percy Baker, Willoughby Jr. “Sugar” Baker, Helen Baker, Olive B. Moales, Cynthia B. Archie, C. Maxwell Baker., and Constance Baker Motley.
A celebration of Mrs. Carnegie's life and legacy and Requiem Mass will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Avenue, New Haven. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery. Friends may call at the church Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00-9:00 a.m.

Wilbert M. Cannon, Jr.
1949 - 2008
Wilbert M. Cannon, Jr., 59, of New Haven, departed this life July 23, 2008.
Born in Grifton, NC, March 5, 1949, he was the son of the late Wilbert M. Cannon, Sr. and Doris Marie Cannon.
Mr. Cannon was employed at Liberty Community Services as a Supportive Housing Case Manager.
He is survived by a son, Wilbert M. Cannon III (Shanesha); daughters, Chenise Williams and Shimyka and LaToya Johnson; brothers, Carrol H. and Gregory West and Everett (Robin) and Antonio Cannon (Vanessa); sisters, Cynthia Pittman (Jesse), Tracey Broddock (Ralph) and Dana West; an adopted brother, Rocco Romano; his fiance, Belinda Johnson; his adoptive mother, Gloria Willett; three godchildren, Zephaniah Washington, Brittany Flader and Da'Leya Edwards; sixteen grandchildren; a great grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mr. Cannon's life and legacy will be held Monday, July 28, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Church of God of Prophecy, 155 Grand Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Isabel Maria Aviles Benitez
1947 - 2009
Isabel Maria Aviles Benitez, age 61, of Lenox Street, New Haven, CT, entered into eternal rest, April 24, 2009. She was the wife of Miguel A. Benitez, Sr.
Born in Vega Baja, P.R, November 15, 1947, she was the daughter of Rosa Rodriguez and the late Jose Manuel Aviles.
She was previously employed at Covidien (U.S. Surgical Corporation) for twenty years.
In addition to her husband and mother, she leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Brenda L. Colon Rosario (Eliezer); son, Miguel A. Benitez Jr. (Evelyn); grandchildren, Eliezer and Breneliz Rosario, and Miguel A. and Francisco Benitez; sisters, Viris Escamilla (Baldemar), Cuqui Guerrero (Jose), Sonia Marin (Ricardo), Neida Nazario (Jose), and Daisy Maldonado (Freddy); brothers, Jose Rodriguez (Carmen), Harry Rodriguez (Liset), and Edwin Rodriguez (Rosa); a special niece, Luz Benitez; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was predeceased by sisters, Miriam and Ivy Sandra Rodriguez and Dolores Torres (Luis); and brothers Norberto, Angel L. (Ana), and Ramon A. (Maria) Rodriguez.
Homegoing service and a celebration of Mrs. Benitez’s life and legacy will be held Monday, April 27, 2009 from 7:00-8:00 P.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Burial will be Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. in Centerville Cemetery.
Elijah C. Wilborne
1934 - 2010
Elijah C. Wilborne, 75, of New Haven, departed this life June 26, 2010. He was the widower of Helen Wilborne.
Born in Halifax, VA, August 26, 1934, he was the son of the late James and Alberta Wilborne.
Prior to retiring, he was employed by Hertz Penske Co. as a Mechanic.
Mr. Wilborne is survived by a daughter, Lori Wilborne Carter; sons, Danny E., Gregory W., Darin A. and Timothy B. Wilborne; seventeen grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Dennis L. Wilborne and a sister, Sydney Wilborne.
A celebration of Mr. Wilborne's life and legacy will be held, Thursday, July 1, 2010, at 1:00 PM at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St., New Haven. Levell Rankins
1926 - 2008
Levell Rankins, 82, of Church St., Middletown, passed away July 12, 2008, at Middlesex Hospital. Mr. Rankins was born in Colerain, NC, June 11, 1926, son of the late James M. and Virlie Griffin Rankins.
Mr. Rankins lived in Middletown for over 50 years, worked for the Wilcox Crittenden Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1985 and loved being a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was an usher.
He is survived by a son, Levell Rankins, Jr. of Middletown; one goddaughter, Latisha Outlaw of Middletown; three brothers, Leroy Rankins of Colerain, NC and Jessie Rankins (Etta) and James Rankins (Marie), both of Ahoskie, NC; four sisters, Annie Wilson of Ahoskie, NC, Virlie Sessoms (Willie) of Powellsville, NC, Alice Privott of Colerain, NC and Fannie Privott of Middletown; a close friend, Clara Sutton of Middletown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Queen Outlaw and Marie Boone and three brothers, Willie, Luther and Robert Rankins.
A celebration of Mr. Rankins' life and legacy will be held Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 9:00 A.M. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 346 Butternut St., Middletown with the Rev. Dr. W. Vance Cotten, Sr., Pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the church from 8:00-9:00 A.M. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Edward Foreman
1933 - 2005
Edward Foreman, Sr., 71, of Portsea St., New Haven, died on September 11, 2005.
He was the husband of Lillie Foreman.
Mr. Foreman was born in Anniston, AL, on October 27, 1933, son of the late Gurlis Teague and Linda Hall.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a bus driver by CT Transit. He was a member of House of Jacob #2 Church and was also an army veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Edward Foreman, Jr., Lorenzo and Mark Foreman; daughters, Joyce, Barbara, Delores, and Tanya Foreman, Linda Foreman-Lucky, Tabatha Foreman-Canady and Latisha Foreman-Jackson; 35 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Foreman and a brother, Leonard Foreman.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 15, 2005, at 10am at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. No Calling Hours. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, CT.
David Earl Burney

David Earl Burney, 58, of Dixwell Ave., New Haven, departed this life on September 1, 2006.
Born in Winterville, NC, on August 28, 1948, he was the son of the late James and Martha Burney.
He had been employed by HB Ives Co.
Mr. Burney is survived by sons, Allen Heyward (Cynthia), David E. Burney, Jr. (Lakeia) and Ervin Burney; his former spouse, Willie Ann Burney; brothers, Samuel Prayer and James Ray Burney (Shirley); sisters, Thelma Carr and Ella Battle; 6 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Frances Burney and a grandchild, David Earl Burney, III.

Teresa S. Blackwell

Teresa S. Blackwell, 72, of Tower Lane, New Haven, formerly of Ormond St., West Haven, departed this life on September 1, 2005.
Ms. Blackwell was born in Bennettsville, SC, on July 24, 1933, daughter of the late Kenny and Pauline Sanders McQueen.
She was employed as the Welfare Director for the City of West Haven. Ms. Blackwell was a member of Gateway Christian Fellowship Church.
She is survived by sons, Edwin (Sonya) Blackwell and Paul (Bette) Blackwell; a brother, James (Sandra) Sanders; sisters, Almena Govan and Dorothy Blair; five grandchildren; a daughter in-law, Linda Blackwell; other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a son, Ulysses "Butch" Blackwell; a brother; three sisters; and her former spouse, Edgar Blackwell.
