John Penfield Thomas, Sr.
1933 - 2006

John Penfield Thomas, Sr., 72, of Hamden, departed this life on April 6, 2006. Mr. Thomas was born on December 20, 1933, in New Haven, CT. He was the son of the late Milton Henry Thomas and Marion Edmondson Thomas.
He was one of the few African Americans in New Haven who had the courage to realize his dream of being an entrepreneur while simultaneously finding a way to be of service to his community during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. In the early 60’s, he founded and operated Youth Business Enterprises, Inc., (“YBE”), a learn-by-doing economic business development program for youth 12-17 years of age.
It was Mr. Thomas’ work as the Founder and Director of the Harambee Economic Development Corporation (“HEDC”) in the 1980’s that further solidified his position as a pillar for his community. Under HEDC, Mr. Thomas organized The Harambee Festival and The Harambee Pageant. In addition, Mr. Thomas was the publisher of the monthly paper, Let’s Talk Harambee, which focused on political and social events taking place in the New Haven Community.
Mr. Thomas’ professional affiliations included serving as the Exalted Ruler of the East Rock Lodge #141 of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World and the President of the Alumni Association of the Dixwell Community House. He was also a longstanding member of the Greater New Haven Business and Professional Association.
To cherish his memory and continue his legacy, he leaves three sons: John P. Thomas, Jr. (Gina Thomas); Asim K. Thomas; and Malcolm C. Thomas. Three daughters: Cynthia Thomas; Christine Nix (Jessie Nix); and Tanisha Thomas Asbery (David Asbery). He also leaves one sibling, Carolyn Thomas Greene, his longtime companion, Alice B. Coleman, nine grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in celebration of Mr. Thomas’ life will be held, Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, CT. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. Elks service to begin at 10:30 A.M. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in memory of John P. Thomas, Sr., to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.

Annie Mae Roberts
1947 - 2008

Annie Mae Roberts, 60, formerly of 55 Kondracki Lane, Wallingford, CT, entered into rest peacefully on July 26, 2008 in Yale New Haven Hospital.
Born in Millett, SC, October 12, 1947, she was the biological daughter of the late Florrie Dunbar Roberts and Wilson Roberts. The late Charlie and Mattie Roberts raised her in Greenville, SC.
She moved to New Haven, CT in 1966. She was employed as a Paraprofessional at New Haven Child Development (Dixwell Daycare) until her health declined.
Ms. Roberts is survived by a daughter, Sharina Gibbs (Jahmal) of New Haven, CT; sons, Gregory Roberts (Nikki) of Atlanta, GA and Latef Roberts (Tushemia) of New Haven, CT; brothers, Willie Holly of New Haven, CT and Charles Lewis of North Haven, CT; sisters, Albertha Roberts Boyce of San Antonio, TX and Betty Dunbar of Columbia, SC; a special cousin, Robert Lee Mitchell (Debbie) of Washington, DC; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Sisters, Millie Lee Dunbar and Viola Williams, and brothers, Herbert Roberts and Willie Dunbar, predeceased her.
A celebration of Annie's life and legacy will be held Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 6:00 PM at Bible Gospel Center, 143 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden, CT. Friends may call at the church from 4:00-6:00 PM. Burial will be Friday, August 1, 2008, at 9:00 AM in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Lisa Lminggio
1979 - 2008

Lisa Lminggio, 28, of Norfolk, VA, departed this life April 24, 2008.
Born in Bridgeport, CT, May 26, 1979, she was the daughter of Donna Tomlin and Earl Purdie.
She was employed as a Certified Nurse's Assistant.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her daughters, Simone and Shiloh Lminggio; her stepfather, Prentiss Tomlin; sisters, Selene, Shaurice, and Zulema Lminggio and Donna Thigpen; her grandparents, Patricia Lminggio and Cora Purdie; aunts, Debra Stewart, Darlene Lminggio and Lisa Harewood; uncles, Daryl Lminggio and William White; her biological mother, Selene Roberts; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Lisa's life will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 3:00 PM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.

Margaret S. Woods
1941 - 2007

Margaret S. Woods, 66, of New Haven, departed this life December 14, 2007.
Born in Sumter, SC, May 10, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Coady and Julia McKnight.
She had most recently been employed at Holiday Inn hotel.
Ms. Woods is survived by her children, Christine McKnight-Williams, Barbara McKnight and James McKnight; a brother, John McKnight; sisters, Daisy Pearson and Marie McKnight; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother, James "Jimmy" McKnight; and sisters, Lillie Ann Gamble and Betty Lou Epps.
A celebration of Ms. Woods' life and legacy will be held Friday, December 21, 2007, at 10:00 AM at Joy Temple Church of Christ in Prayer, 424 Howard Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-10:00 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Frank Clayton, Sr.
1936 - 2007

Elder Frank Clayton, Sr., 71, of New Haven, entered into eternal rest on December 29, 2007. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 49 years, Dr. Willie Mae Clayton, Pastor of Christian Love Center Church.
Born in Montgomery, AL, September 30, 1936, he was the son of the late Frank Stovall and Mary Clayton.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at U.S. Repeating Arms and the Hospital of St. Raphael.
He was a member of Pitts Chapel Church and its male chorus for numerous years. Frank preached his initial sermon in January 1990 and in 1994 joined his wife in the opening of Christian Love Center Church. In 1995, he established the Christian Love Center Male Chorus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Wayne (Laverne) and Frank Clayton Jr. (Desiree) of New Haven; daughters, Geraldine Johnson (James) of New Haven and Pamela Spann (Michael) of Orlando, FL; a grandchild, Jonita Clayton, whom he raised from birth; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brothers, Johnny and Ernest Clayton of New Haven, Joshua Smedley (Betty) of North Carolina and Al Stovall of Montgomery, AL; a sister, Jackie Stovall of Montgomery, AL; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, James and Albert Clayton.
A celebration of Elder Clayton's life and legacy will be held Friday, January 4, 2008, at 7:00 PM at Agape Christian Center, 90 Goffe St., New Haven. An hour of viewing will be held at the church from 5:00-6:00 PM and a musical celebration will follow from 6:00-7:00 PM. Burial Saturday at 10:00 AM in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Fannie Williams
1916 - 2007

Fannie Williams, 90, of New Haven, departed this life November 24, 2007.
Born in Perry, GA, December 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Carrie Eubanks.
Ms. Williams is survived by her granddaughter, Debra Williams-Gray; a brother, Anthony Eubanks; a sister, Annie Gamble; 3 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Willie Mae Williams.
A memorial service to celebrate Ms. Williams' life and legacy will be held Saturday, December 1, 2007, at 12:00 PM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.

LeRoy Gomes
1927 - 2007

LeRoy Gomes, 80, of New Haven, departed this life September 23, 2007. He was the husband of Ella Gomes.
Born in New Haven, CT, May 4, 1927, he was the son of the late Leo and Mildred Gomes.
He was a WWII Army veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Clency and Brenda Capehart; a sister, Barbara Huff; a nephew, Kevin Martin; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Gomes and a grandchild.
A celebration of Mr. Gomes' life and legacy will be held Saturday, September 29, 2007, at 9:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial in the State Veterans Cemetery.

Frank Massey
1927 - 2008

Frank Massey, 80, entered into eternal rest on January 1, 2008.
Born on May 7, 1927, in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late John & Edith Massey.
He is survived by his wife Pearlie Massey; daughters, Evelyn Massey, Carol Massey-Wrighton, Shirley A. Massey and Rhonda Massey; sons Frank Massey Jr. and Michael A. Massey; and a host or relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mr. Massey's life and legacy will be held Tuesday January 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial in the State Veterans' Cemetery.

Betty Holt
1935 - 2007

Betty Holt, 72, of Honea Path, SC, formerly of Clinton, CT, departed this life September 21, 2007. She was the widow of Lorenzo Holt.
Mrs. Holt was born July 23, 1935, daughter of the late Earnest W. Lewis and Daisy Lou Pruitt Evans.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at Yale University.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a brother, Ernest Furman Lewis; a stepson, Donald Franklin; grandchildren, Veronica and Shaun Franklin; a great granddaughter, Shania Franklin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother, William Henry Lewis.
A celebration of Mrs. Holt's life and legacy will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Arthur Lee Allen, Jr.
1944 - 2007

Arthur Lee Allen, Jr., 63, of Ansonia, CT, departed this life October 11, 2007.
Born in New Haven, CT, June 22, 1944, he was the son of Arthur Lee Allen, Sr. and Willie Mae McKinney-Allen.
He was a New Haven resident most of his life and prior to retiring, he was employed at the West Haven VA Health Care Center.
Mr. Allen was an Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his children, Natisha L. and Verisa Allen, Michelle Campbell and Nigel Gilliams-Lewis; a sister, Maudeen Allen; a brother, Samuel Allen, Sr.; 7 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald L. Allen and a sister, Alicia A. Winns.
A celebration of Mr. Allen's life and legacy will be held Saturday, October 20, 2007, at 9:00 AM at Walk of Faith Church, 104 Fairmont Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
