Gertrude B. Lazzari,
a resident of Bronxville, N.Y., died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 at home. She was 94.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born May 13, 1906, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Byrne and Mary R. Standish.
Mrs. Lazzari graduated from the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, N.Y. She also attended the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, Fordham University and the City College of New York.
She was a teacher and reading specialist in the New York City Public School system.
She was active in several charitable, cultural and religious organizations. She was a past president of the Charminade Music Club of Yonkers, N.Y., and the Mount St. Ursula alumnae association. She served on several committees at the Bronxville Women's Club. She was a Lady of the Holy Sepulcher.
Mrs. Lazzari was an avid bridge player and was interested in travel, literature and art.
She is survived by a son, John B. Lazzari of Stamford; two daughters, Mary Regina Niehaus of Arlington, Va., and Ann Marie Beccue of Barrington, R.I.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John B. Lazzari.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 12, and Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, 20 Cedar St., Bronxville.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at Annunciation Church in Crestwood, N.Y.
Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Webster Avenue and E. 233rd St., Bronx, N.Y.
Joan Smith Foster,
a New Milford resident, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at New Milford Hospital. She was 69.
She died of heart failure, according to her family.
Born Aug. 14, 1931, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Ella Murphy Smith.
Mrs. Foster graduated from Stamford High School in 1948 and the College of New Rochelle in 1952.
She was a teacher in New Milford elementary schools, having worked at John Pettibone School. She retired in 1993.
She was a member of the Republican Town Committee and the New Milford Library Board of Trustees.
She has been listed in "Who's Who Among American Women" and was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister, a member of Mother Teresa's Lay Missionaries of Charity, a teacher of baptism instructions and a religious education teacher.
She is survived by two sons, Frederick M. Foster of New Milford and the Rev. Michael S. Foster of Newton, Mass.; two daughters, Mary Ellen F. Hefferman of New Milford and Charlotte J. Safos of Washington , D.C.; a sister, Jean Ann Livingston of Carmel, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 12, 2000 at Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at St. Francis Xavier Church, 1 Elm St., New Milford.
Burial will be private.

L. Nesta Varnum,
a lifelong Stamford resident, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 at Laurel Manor in Madison. She was 86.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Dec. 31, 1913, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Frank C. and Genive Ryder Gross.
Mrs. Varnum was a homemaker. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1937. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist of Stamford.
She is survived by her husband, Philip C. Varnum of Stamford; three sons, P. Clark Varnum of Pawleys Island, S.C., R. Todd Varnum of Naples, Fla., and Jeffrey C. Varnum of Sugar Loaf, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
There are no calling hours.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2000 at Bouton & Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
Burial is private.

Marie O'Brien,
a longtime Stamford resident, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was 74.
She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family.
Born Sept. 3, 1926, in Roscommon, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late John and Delia Flanagan Keenan.
Mrs. O'Brien was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Leo Church in Stamford. She and had resided in Stamford for the past 23 years.
She is survived by a son, Kevin T. O'Brien of Stratford; three daughters, Karen O'Brien Saviano of Monmouth Junction, N.J., Minelle DelVecchio of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Kayde A. Herrera of Dumont, N.J.; two brothers, Michael John Keenan and Ernie Keenan, both of Ireland; and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kevin P. O'Brien.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, and travel to St. Leo Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m.
Burial in Ireland will take place at a later date.

Ramona Irizarry,
a longtime Stamford resident, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey. She was 65.
She died of respiratory failure, according to her family.
Born April 4, 1935, in Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Miguel Irizarry and Luisa Marti.
She was a homemaker and a parishioner at St. John's Church. Her son, Cisco Gaztambide, is a member of the Stamford Board of Representatives from District 6.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Irizarry is survived by two daughters, Lillian Mercado and Jacqueline Irizarry, both of Perth Amboy, N.J.; two brothers, Sixto Irizarry and Ireno Irizarry, of San Sebastian, Puerto Rico; four sisters, Rosita Perez of Stamford, Zoraida Carde of Tampa, Fla., Natividad Cruz of Bradenton, Fla., and Rosa Irizarry of San Sebastian; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at Bosak-Talboys Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.
Burial will be in Puerto Rico.
Lt. Col. Rudolf C. Paltauf,
a Redding resident, retired from the U.S. Air Force, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at home. He was 70.
He died of cancer, according to his family.
Born Aug. 26, 1930, in Vienna, Austria, he was a son of the late Dr. Rudolf and Mary Paltauf.
Lt. Col. Paltauf came to the United States when he was three years old, settling with his family in New York City. He graduated from St. Ann's Academy, Georgetown University and the University of Connecticut.
He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952 as an aerospace engineer. During his career in the military, he was stationed at the headquarters for the Defense Atomic Support Agency at the Pentagon and the headquarters of the Air Force Systems Command at Andrews Air Force Base. He was also chief of the surveillance division at the Rome Air Development Center at Griffis Air Force Base, N.Y., from 1973 to 1976.
From 1977 until his retirement in 1980, he was chief of the test division at Air Force Physical Security Systems at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts.
After his retirement, he was employed by Norden Systems in Norwalk from 1981 until 1991.
Lt. Col. Paltauf moved to Redding in 1973. He was a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Retired Officers Association - Western Connecticut Chapter and chairman of membership for the Air Force Association.
He was also a communicant at St. Patrick's Church in Redding.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Paltauf of Redding; two daughters, Rosemarie Tuck of Allen, Texas , and Renee Sturges of Danbury; four sons, Rudolf Paltauf of Austin, Texas , Ronald Paltauf of Ridgefield, Robert Paltauf of Redding and Raymond Paltauf of Bethel; two brothers, Richard Paltauf of Southbury and Robert Paltauf of Brookfield; 19 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Roxanne Paltauf; and two granddaughters, Rhianna Paltauf and Jennifer Tuck.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 12, 2000 at Bouton Funeral Home, 31 W. Church St., Georgetown.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000 at St. Patrick's Church, Redding Ridge, Redding.
Burial with military honors will follow in Umpawaug Cemetery
in Redding.
