Ella Mae "Gran-na" Byrd-Herring, 79, of New Haven, departed this life March 10, 2008. She was the wife of Robert Herring.
Born in Norfolk, VA, August 16, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Mary Ella White Thomas.
In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Linda Barnes; a sister, Rosetta Brown; her grandchildren, Anthony Barnes (Chana), Lawrence Barnes, Linda McLeod (Kenneth) and Hezekiah Barnes, Jr.; great grandchildren, Shalera Jones, Asia Barnes, Troy Singleton, Jazmine Williamson, Aidan Saunders, Anthony Barnes, Jr. and Katherine McLeod; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by brothers, Woodrow Wilson, Jr., Alexander Thomas and Bartlett Wilson, Sr.; and sisters, Margaret Kemp and Nina Roe.
A celebration of Mrs. Byrd-Herring's life and legacy will be held Saturday, March 15, 2008, at 9:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Orris M. Elliott
1922 - 2008
Orris M. Elliott, 85, of New Haven, departed this life February 18, 2008. He was the husband of Sarah Mack.
Born in Nevis, West Indies, June 15, 1922, he was the son of the late George and Mary Elliott.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Winchester Repeating Arms and was also a self-employed carpenter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Joan and Cheryl Elliott; brothers, Carleton and Simeon Elliott; a sister, Millicent Elliott ; two grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Nathan Elliott and a sister, Helena Williams.

Jacqueline 'Ms. Jackie" H. Reid

Jacqueline 'Ms. Jackie" H. Reid, 88, of Hamden, departed this life November 29, 2009. She was the widow of Raymond Reid.
Born in New Haven, CT, September 6, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Emma Brown.
She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Sheila Woods and Emma Sledge; a stepson, Ronald Reid; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; nineteen great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a stepson, Gordon Reid; a brother, Harry Brown; and two grandchildren.
A celebration of Mrs. Reid's life and legacy will be held Friday, December 4, 2009, at 6:00 P.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Burial will be private.
Robert J. James
1941 - 2009
Robert J. James, 68, of Hamden, departed this life December 18, 2009. He was the husband of Ollie James.
Born in Chesterfield County, SC, August 9, 1941, he was a son of the late Annie Mae James.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a Supervisor for over 30 years.
In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory, a brother, Thomas A. Mills, Sr. (Vera); a sister, Belva Canady (Billy); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence James, Henry McCoy, Ervin Mills Antrum and Michael Patrick Mills; and sisters, Gracie Mae James, Margarie Barnes, Beulah Mae Douglas, Sallie Lee Coleman and Nellie C. Mills.
A celebration of Mr. James' life will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. at Bible Gospel Center, 143 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 3:00-4:00 P.M. Burial will be Monday at 9:00 A.M. in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.
Lillian "Maum" Fenner Logan
1919 - 2009
Lillian "Maum" Fenner Logan, 90, of New Haven, departed this life October 30, 2009. She was the widow of John Wesley Logan, Sr.
Born in Columbia, NC, August 19, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Pete and Anna Davenport Fenner.
She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, John Wesley Logan, Jr. and George Logan; daughters, Jeanette Horner and Carolyn Logan; sisters, Almeta Gillespie and Veda Norman; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; eight sisters; and two grandchildren, Monique Horner and Kenneth Horner, Jr.
A celebration of Mrs. Logan's life and legacy will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 9:00 A.M. at Faith Temple Revival Center, 834 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 8:00-9:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
William Higgs
1916 - 2009
William Higgs, 93, of New Haven, departed this life August 24, 2009. He was the husband of Alyce Higgs.
Born in New Haven, CT, February 11, 1916, he was the son of the late William and Alice Higgs.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Acres Trucking Co. as a Truck Driver and at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Security Guard.
He was a member of Widow's Son Lodge #1 Prince Hall Affiliation.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Marjorie "Margie" Carlton (John) of New Haven; a sister, Thalithan "Tea" Higgs of New Haven; grandchildren, Alphonso Flemming (Deborah) of West Haven and Kenneth Flemming (Evelyn) of Las Vegas, NV; five great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; a niece, Judith Campbell (Louis) of New Haven; a great niece, Andrea Campbell of New Haven; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Frederick and Joseph Higgs and a sister, Helen Higgs.
A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Higgs' life and legacy will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at 6:00 P.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.

Robert West, 59, of New Haven, departed this life August 9, 2009.
Born in Lenoir County, NC, February 7, 1950, he was the son of the late Nora Lee West Olds.
Mr. West was previously employed at G&O Manufacturing as a Machine Operator and had also been employed at Yale New Haven Hospital in the Maintenance Dept.
He served as a Deacon at Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ.
He leaves to cherish his memory, sons, Shantel West (Lepreyia) of West Haven and Jerry White (Teria) of Georgia; daughters, Latisha West of New Haven and Yolinda West of West Haven; sisters, Deloris West and Rosa Edwards (William); niece, Dava Flowers all of New Haven; aunts, Mary Pridgen of West Haven, Ann West of New Jersey, N. Pearl Greenlee and Doris Rogers of New Haven; uncles, James W. Brown (Mammie) of New Haven, James E. West (Sarah) of Maryland and Milton R. Cannon (Mildred) of New Haven; nine grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

John A. Roberts, 77, of West Haven, died January 4, 2010. He was the husband of Fannie Roberts.
Born in Cobb, GA, October 4, 1932, he was a son of the late Richard and Bobbie Lou Roberts.
Mr. Roberts was employed by the City of New Haven Board of Education as a Teacher at the King/Robinson Magnet School.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Benjamin Roberts (Denise); daughters, Miriam, Deborah and Shalisha Roberts; a stepdaughter, Carmenlita Brown; a brother, Joe Roberts; a sister, Ossie Lene Murray; an aunt, Eutha D. Jackson; five grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Monday, January 11, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 210 Old Grassy Hill Rd., Orange. Viewing and visitation will be held at the Hall from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Shirley M. McLain, 64, of Hamden, departed this life September 1, 2009.
Born in Bennettsville, SC, December 23, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Clara Mae McLain.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at Swingline Staple Co. as an Assembler.
Ms. McLain was a member of St. Matthew's UFWB Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Jacqueline Patricia McLain and Barbara McLain-Russell (Adolphus); a sister, Lillie Oliver; three grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John D. McLain.
