Bernice McCollum, 68, of Hamden, departed this life March 9, 2008.
Born in New London, CT, August 16, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Nellie LaBelle.
Prior to retiring in June of 2000, she was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as an Inspector.
She was a life-long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Ms. McCollum leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Allen McCollum, Jr. (Kathy), Elois Lavonne McCollum and Richard Darryl McCollum; siblings, Barbara McDonald, Amy Wormley, Melvina Miller-Ewings, Roberta LaBelle-Thomas, Karen Tavaris and Melvin LaBelle, Jr.; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Ms. McCollum's life and legacy will be held Friday, March 14, 2008, at 11:00 AM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Abraham Flynn, Sr.
1920 - 2007
Abraham Flynn, Sr., 87, of New Haven, departed this life September 21, 2007.
Born in Darlington, SC, June 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Andersen Flynn, Sr. and Mel Flynn.
Mr. Flynn was employed for numerous years as a Tool and Dye Operator at the former Pond Lily Co. He was a WWII Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Jonnie Flynn; his children, Sandra Flynn-Brown, Abraham Flynn, Jr. and Carlos Flynn; brothers, Alonzo "JB" Flynn, Roosevelt and Eugene Flynn; sisters, Melrose Williams and Anna Spann; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, James, Louis and Andersen Flynn, Jr.
A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Flynn's life and legacy will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at 6:00 PM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.
Pastor Viola Marie James
1950 - 2008
Pastor Viola Marie James, 57, of Hamden, entered into eternal rest on January 1, 2008. She was the wife of Bishop John James.
Born in Mount Meigs, AL, September 28, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Jimmy D. Jones and the late Ethel Lee Griffin Stovall and Saul Stovall.
She was the pastor and founder of Living Testimony Holy Apostolic Church and was employed at Comcast as a Customer Service Representative.
In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memories, sons, Charles and Christopher Glover and John James; daughters, Gerlene and Chariss Glover and Jennifer Campbell; brothers, Fred, Saul and Robert Stovall, Jimmy D. Jones, Jr. and Isaiah Jones; sisters, Annie Ruth Bailey, Christine Irving and Lillie Mae Jones; 7 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother Eugene Stovall.

Antoinette Waller
1947 - 2007
Antoinette Waller, 60, of New Haven, died December 16, 2007. She was the wife of Archie Waller.
Born in Savannah, GA, September 9, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin R. Foster, Sr. and Mable Cohens.
She had been employed as a Geriatric Nurse's Aide.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Nathaniel Wilson, Brandon Foster, Lance, Lisa and Orion Osborne, Brenda Wilson, Angela Brooks, Josette, Tia and Kia Williams, Kashondra Foster and Brandy Alston; a brother, Benjamin Foster, Jr.; sisters, Rachel Saxon and Kathleen, Linda and Amanda Foster; ten grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her stepfather, Moses Cohens; a daughter, Constance Foster and a sister, Ernestine Foster.
Memorial service will be held December 20, 2007 at 10:30 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.
Verdell Samuel Reid, Jr.
1942 - 2006
Verdell Samuel Reid, Jr. 63, of Hamden, CT, died February 21, 2006 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Gloristine Cotten-Reid for over 35 years.
Mr. Reid was born December 27, 1942, in Selma, AL, son of Ruby Reid of New Haven and the late Verdell Reid, Sr.
Verdell attended Hillhouse High School where he was a member of the football and track teams. After graduating from Hillhouse, he joined the U.S. Army where he later received the National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooters Medal.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, he began employment at Winchester Repeating Arms and later left to become an apprentice, and eventually a journeyman ironworker, for the Local 424 Ironworkers' Union.
In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves to celebrate his life, sons, Michael (Shirley) Dixon and Verdell Samuel (Nikilia) Reid, III of New Haven; a daughter, Narviar Ruche Reid of Ansonia; a sister, Brenda (Gent Lee) Daniels of New Haven; six grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Verdell was predeceased by brothers, Charles and Frank Reid; his grandmother, Eva McCurdy; and a granddaughter, Jaala Haynes.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 25, 2006, at 9am at Bible Gospel Center, 143 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden. Friends may call at the church from 8am-9am. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Elizabeth "Lizzie" McCall
1914 - 2006
Elizabeth "Lizzie" McCall, 92, of New Haven, departed this life on February 16, 2006. She was the widow of Joseph J. McCall.
Mrs. McCall was born February 8, 1914, in Darlington, SC, daughter of the late Andrew and Rebecca Green.
She was a member of Community Baptist Church.
She is survived by sons, Roosevelt and Henry McCall; daughters, Evelyn Miller, Lorrina Lewis, Bertha Jones, Francenia (Edward) Johnson, Lizzie McCall and Theola Lockhart; brothers, Edward Samuel and Walter (Margie) Alford; sisters, Fannie Mae Adams, Carrie Johnson and Naomi (Bob) Samuel; a daughter in-law, Patricia McCall; a sister in-law, Mary Green; 47 grandchildren; 85 great grandchildren; 31 great-great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Mrs. McCall was predeceased by sons, Joseph and Richard McCall; 2 brothers and a sister.

Walter J. Teague, Jr.
1978 - 2006
Walter James Teague, Jr., 27, of New Haven, departed this life April 12, 2006.
Mr. Teague was born in New Haven, CT, July 5, 1978, son of Walter J. Teague, Sr. and Pamula Morgan Teague.
Walter was educated in the New Haven Public Schools and also received his state certification in tool and die.
He was employed by National Construction Co.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Justice Teague; daughters, Ivory and Iyoniah Teague; a sister, LaNatra Teague; maternal grandparents, John and Emma Koonce; maternal great-grandparents, Robert and Rebecca McKiver; a companion, Michelle Savage; and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Theodore Morgan and paternal grandparents, Deacon Theodore R. Teague and Estella Teague.

Min. Mary L. Nelson
1954 - 2006
Minister Mary L. Nelson, 51, of Main St., West Haven, departed this life peacefully on April 14, 2006 at CT Hospice.
Ms. Nelson was born December 2, 1954, in Kingstree, SC, beloved daughter of Lillie Mae Nelson Coward of Hamden and the late Levi Nelson.
Prior to her illness, she was employed by the Southern CT Gas Co. for numerous years.
In addition to her devoted mother, survivors include her stepfather, Bishop Arlester Coward of Hamden; a brother, Willie Joe Nelson of New Haven; stepsisters, Victoria Levine (Winston D.) and Dorothy and Connie Mewborn all of New Haven; a stepbrother, Elbert Mewborn of New Haven; and other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother, Lee Nelson and her stepfather, Willie James Mewborn.

Costella Marie "Cookie" Boyd Randall, 44, of New Haven, departed this life on April 6, 2006. She was the wife of Broderick Randall.
Mrs. Randall was born September 17, 1961, in Tuskegee, AL, daughter of Wiley Boyd, Jr. and Josephine Johnson Boyd.
She was employed at Sargent Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Bethel AME Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by sons, Dayquann and Reginald Boyd and Broderick E. and Brandon J. Randall; a brother, Michael Boyd; sisters, Donna Walker, Veronica Granger, Venetria Boyd and Zena Williams; 3 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Thomas Edward Sims, Jr.
1918 - 2006
Thomas Edward Sims, Jr., 88, of New Haven, departed this life on March 14, 2006. He was the widower of Elizabeth Baker Sims.
Mr. Sims was born January 12, 1918, in New Haven, CT, son of the late Thomas E. Sims, Sr. and Viola M. Williams.
Prior to his retirement in 1986, he was employed for 41 years by Winchester (U.S.) Repeating Arms. He was also employed for 20 years by Neighborhood Housing Services, retiring in 2005.
He is survived by his children, David (Pamela), Ronald (Marie) and Charles (Joanne) Sims of Hamden, Robert (Theresa) Sims of West Haven, Richard Sims of Cheshire, Jeanette Lopez Franklin of Pennsylvania and Carol Sims and Gloria (Sylvester) White Williams of New Haven; sisters, Hester Osborn and Rosemarie Eason of Hamden; a brother, Bobby Sims of New York; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, Alfred Rudolph Sims, Charles Sims and John Carter; and sisters, Ida Schoonmaker and Josephine Lee.
