George W. Sawyer, Sr., age 63, of Wintergreen Ave., Hamden, departed this life on March 22, 2006.
Mr. Sawyer was born in New Haven, CT, June 17, 1942, son of the late Elmer and Agnes Sawyer.
He was employed by SBC for 20 years and prior, was employed by Armstrong Rubber Co.
George is survived by children, George Sawyer, Jr. of Mesa, AZ and Monica Bright of Hamden, CT; grandchildren, Quinton, Brandon and Jordan Bright and Kristen and Christopher Sawyer; a brother, Daniel Sawyer of Philadelphia; sisters, Goldhart "Marie" Trotman of Prospect, CT and Patricia Ezekiel of Sunnyvale, CA; and other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, Elmer Jr., Maurice, Leonard and Ronald Sawyer; a sister, Hattie Sawyer; and a grandson, George Sawyer III
A memorial service in celebration of George's life will be held Monday, March 27, 2006 at 10 AM at St. Matthew's UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven.
Gertrude H. Fletcher Stoner
1922 - 2006
Gertrude H. Fletcher Stoner, 83, of New Haven, died peacefully at home on February 24, 2006 after a long illness. She was the widow of Calvin F. Stoner, Jr.
Mrs. Stoner was born in New Haven, August 29, 1922, daughter of the late Charles E. and Anna F. Fletcher.
Mrs. Stoner retired in 1999 from the New Haven Board of Education after working 37 years at Katherine Brennan School. The students, parents and faculty always remained in her thoughts.
She was the beloved mother of Calvin F. Stoner, III (Debra Smith-Stoner) of Hamden and Janet B. and Sheila M. Stoner, both of New Haven. She also leaves a grandson, Abraham Stoner; sisters, Olive J. Fletcher of New Haven and Eunice L. Meyers of Cleveland, OH; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by brothers, Albert, Edward, John, Everett and Lawrence Fletcher.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Adler Geriatric Center at Yale New Haven Hospital, 789 Howard Ave., New Haven, CT 06504.
A funeral service in celebration of Gertrude's life will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at 11:30 am at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Interment will be private.
Willie C. Brown, Sr.
1939 - 2006
Willie C. Brown, Sr., 66, of West Haven, departed this life on March 26, 2006. He was the husband of Almeta Brown.
Mr. Brown was born May 11, 1939, in Williamston, NC, son of the late Mae Pearl Evans.
He was employed by Peter Pan Bus Co.
Mr. Brown was a member of Macedonia C.O.G.I.C. where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Willie C. Brown, Jr., Michael and Ryan Brown and Leroy Craig Batchelor; a daughter, Barbara Ann Batchelor; a stepson, Rodney James; a stepdaughter, Paula Nesmith; brothers, Amos Brown and James Evans; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Sheila Muhammad.
A funeral service in celebration of Willie's life will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at 6 PM at Macedonia Church of God in Christ, 151 Newhall St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 5-6 PM. Burial Saturday in Williamston, NC.
Beatrice Douglas
1919 - 2006
Beatrice Douglas, 86, of Hamden, departed this life on March 30, 2006. She was the wife of Rev. Joseph Douglas.
Mrs. Douglas was born June 3, 1919, in Ayden, NC, daughter of the late William H. Darden and Jennie Darden Thomas.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Yale New Haven Hospital.
She was co-founder, along with her husband, of Little Rock Church(Rock Tabernacle Ministries). There she served as first lady as well as on numerous auxiliaries including the usher's board, mother's board and choir.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Joann Douglas of Hamden; a brother, William H. Darden, Jr. of Dallas, TX; a sister, Bertha Moye of New Haven; an adopted daughter, Lisa (Herbert) Thomas of North Branford; 2 adopted grandchildren, Paul B. Thompson of Danville, VA and Sara K. Thomas of North Branford; and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a brother, James Darden.
A funeral service in celebration of Beatrice's life will be held Monday, April 3, 2006, at 11 AM at St. Matthew's UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Irmin L. Kellman
1949 - 2006
Irmin L. Kellman, 56, of New Haven, departed this life on February 22, 2006.
Mrs. Kellman was born July 18, 1949 in Essequibo, Guyana, daughter of Valda Benjamin and the late Randolph Benjamin.
She was employed at Yale New Haven Hospital as an operating room associate for nearly 25 years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Charles Kellman; sons, Wayne, Sean, Ori and Carmi Kellman; a daughter, Marcel Kellman; brothers, Noel, Keith and Nigel Benjamin; sisters, Carol Alexander and Paulette Cox; 10 grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Cheryl Benjamin.
A Requiem Mass in celebration of Irmin's life will be held Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 8:30am at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 262 Shelton Ave., New Haven. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Friends may call Friday from 6pm-8pm at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.
Tiffany M. Russell-Jackson
1985 - 2006
Tiffany M. Russell-Jackson, age 20, of Hamden, CT, departed this life on March 9, 2006.
She was born on July 24, 1985, in New Haven, CT, daughter of Debra L. Russell and Reggie Jackson.
Tiffany graduated from Hamden High School with honors in 2003. She was employed by Walmart in Hamden and New Haven as a cashier and eventually earned the title of Connection Center Specialist. She was enrolled at Branford Hall where she was studying billing and coding in the field of nursing.
In addition to her parents, she also leaves to mourn; a brother, Reggie Russell; a sister, Brittany M. Jackson; her maternal grandmother, Winsome Russell; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Gerald Russell and Sally Price.

Treser Alston Jackson, 62, of West Haven, died October 23, 2005.
Ms. Jackson was born in Pittsboro, NC, October 21, 1943, daughter of the late John Henry Alston and Annie Alston.
She leaves to mourn; children, Eundra Alston (Yvonne) of Burlington, NC, Rayvon Alston (Lyn) of San Diego, CA and Pamela Alston of Sanford, NC; grandchildren, Kadijah, Jasmine, Tyrelle and Rayvon; sisters, Doris Oden of Norwalk, CT, Geri Feaster of Upper Marlboro, MD, Alberta Dark of South Windsor, CT, Kaye Booker of Reidsville, NC and Marvie McCrimmon (Randy) of Great Mills, MD; brothers, Elmer Alston of Siler City, NC, Welbun Alston (Jeannie) of Graham, NC and Tyree Alston of Ramseur, NC.

Rosener Burney

Rosener Burney, 88, of New Haven, departed this life, May 6, 2006. She was the widow of Willie L. Burney.
Mrs. Burney was born in Kingstree, SC, March 20, 1918, daughter of the late Kelly and Patty Brown Bradley.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Barney Lou Fashions.
She is survived by nieces and nephews; Jerome, Blondell, Henry (Shirley), Jimmy (Janet), Namon (Linda), Kelly (Ann) and Melvin Bradley, Minnie Lawson and Tammy McClain; a sister in-law, Bessie Wolfork; stepchildren; Willie Burney, Jr., Barbara Skinner, Joanna Hill, Louise Osborne and Gwendolyn and Denise Burney; special friends, Mildred Drew and Helen Settle; and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by siblings, Ernest McBride, James, Kelly, Cleveland, Namon, Elijah, Melvin and Louise Bradley and Annie Mae James; a niece, Leah McClain; a nephew, Ernest L. Bradley; and a stepson, Richard Osborne.

Candra LaDavia Stewart
1978 - 2008
Candra LaDavia Stewart, 29, of Wayfarer St., New Haven, devoted mother of three children, Rayana Downer, Noah and Canaan Burney, died March 13, 2008 after a significant battle at Bridgeport Burn Center.
Born in New Haven, March 24, 1978, she was the cherished daughter of Dorothea Stewart-Cooper.
She was employed at Crossroads of New Haven as a passionate Drug and Alcohol Counselor.
Candra will be deeply missed by her stepfather, Luther Cooper; three brothers; David Stewart Sr. (Lisa), Dion Younger (Vicki), and SPC Alain Hawley Jr.; two sisters, Catrina Hawley-Stewart and Allyse Algarin. She was the beloved niece of Debbie Stewart-Highsmith & Bob, James Stewart Jr. (Joan), Pamela Little and Alice and Sterling Hubbard. She also leaves her father, Allen Hubbard Jr.; grandmothers, Florence Hubbard and Lucette Hawley; and a host of aunts uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her grandparents, Doris and James Stewart Sr., Allen Hubbard Sr. and dad Alain”John” Hawley Sr.
A celebration of Candra's life will be held Thursday, March 20, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Church of Christ, 16 Gem St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery.

Richard Davis
1949 - 2007
Richard Davis, 58, of Hamden, CT, departed this life October 15, 2007. He was the husband of Maudest Davis.
Born in Kingstree, SC, April 16, 1949, he was the son of Nathan and Mary McKnight.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a Machine Operator.
Mr. Davis was a Marine Corps. veteran.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his children, Brian, Lakeisha and Megan; a grandchild, Nevaeh; nine sisters; ten brothers; and other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother.
A celebration of Mr. Davis' life and legacy will be held Friday, October 19, 2007, at 7:00 PM at Christian Love Center, 154 Derby Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 6:00-7:00 PM. Burial will be Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Veterans' Cemetery, Middletown, CT.
