Phyllis J. Reil, 88, of Venice FL formerly of Bethany, wife of the late Otto A. Reil, died Feb. 16, 2004 in Venice. She was born July 11, 1915 in New Haven, daughter of the William and Gertrude Myers Janswick. She worked as a secretary at Amity High School for 13 years retiring in 1980. She was a member of First Church of Christ Congregational of Bethany. Survivors include a son, Robert W. Reil and his wife, Crystal of Bethany, a daughter, Judy R. Sjogren and her husband, Alan of Hamden, a brother, William Janswick, Jr. of Seal Beach, CA, three grandchildren, Carson Reil Echeverry, Donna Sjogren and Robert Sjogren and two great-grandchildren, Brittany Sjogren and Alyssa Emerson.
Memorial service Thurs., March 4, 2004 at 7 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Friends may call Thurs. from 6 – 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House, 501 George St., New Haven, CT 06511.

MERIDEN - Virginia S. Birch, 89, formerly of 26 Flower St., died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehab in Mansfield, CT. She was the wife of the late Kenneth E. Birch. Born in Buffalo, NY on Sept. 15, 1914, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Charlotte Lyman Spencer. She was a graduate of Meriden High School and was employed by the Meriden Board of Education for 21 years, most recently at Platt High School. She was a past president of the Educational Secretaries Association of Meriden, past president of the Rosemalers' Society of New England and past secretary of the Meriden Arts and Crafts Association. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Meriden and the Federated Women's Club of Meriden. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dean Reilein of Mansfield Center, CT; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Peter A. and Barbara Birch of Richmond, VA, James S. Birch of Bethel, CT and Mark E. and Lynda Birch of Haddam, CT; eight grandchildren, Susan Reilein Hill of Tucson, AZ, Amy Reilein of Palo Alto, CA, Alan Reilein of Killeen, TX, William Reilein of Kauai, Hawaii, Barry Birch of Hackensack, NJ, Julie Birch of Highlands Ranch, CO, Heather Birch Linnhoff of Bethel, CT and Emily Birch Grillo of Plymouth, MA.; and three great-grandchildren, Grace Reilein of Hawaii and Julianne Hill and Jeffrey Hill, both of Tucson, AZ. Mrs. Birch was predeceased by a brother, Richard Spencer.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 5, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Dr. John W. Clarke will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Camp Claire, c/o First Congregational Church, 62 Colony St., Meriden, CT 06451, Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden, c/o Gallery 53, 53 Colony St., Meriden, CT 0645l, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Helena K. Hold, 92, of Hamden, beloved wife of the late Robert H. Hold passed away Wed., Feb. 25, 2004. She was born in Danbury, CT, Feb. 3, 1912, daughter of the late Frederick and Lydia Bussetti Klopp. Mrs. Hold is survived by her daughters, Irene Motta and Roberta Smith, her grandchildren, Robert Sharron, Tiffany Smith and Bridgett Foyer, a great-granddaughter, Leia Foyer and a son-in-law, Russell Smith. She was employed at Whitney Blake Co. as office manager, retiring after 25 years of service and was a participating member of the Ascension Ladies Guild at the Ascension Church in Hamden.

At his home, June 23, 2004, Leon G. Ransom, 76, husband of Dorman Anderson Ransom of Starr St., New Haven, father of Marsha L. Ransom McAlpine-Moore and her husband, Robert Moore of Hamden, Melba M. Crowley and Janet Bailey both of New Haven, grandfather of Melinda Lee Crowley, Sean-Michael J. McAlpine, Robert Adam Moore, Eli Jacob Moore, Suzanne Ransom, Tannis Bailey, Thomas Ransom, Walter Bailey and David Bailey. Also survived by several great-grandchildren. Predeceased by a sister, Geneva Alberta Ransom Link and a granddaughter, Deidre Bailey. Leon was born in Lincolnton, NC, Nov. 10, 1927, son of the late Gentle Lee and Ethel Gibbs Ransom. He had worked as a cameraman for the former Century Reproductions.
Funeral service Thurs., July 1 at 11 a.m. at Christian Tabernacle Church, 449 Newhall St., New Haven. Viewing will be at the church Thursday from 10:30 - 11 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

WALLINGFORD - Arthur J. Dupuis, 79 husband of 58 years to Helen E.(Knaggs) Dupuis died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford. He was born August 17, 1924 in Meriden a son of the late Russell Dupuis and Rosina (Hineline) Dupuis Scism. Arthur worked for 40 years for International Silver Company . He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S.Army. He was a member of Masonic Order-Meridian Lodge #77 AF & AM, Past Grand Royal Patron, State of Ct., The Order of the Amaranth, St. Elmo Commandery No.9, Keystone Chapter 27 R.A.M. of Meriden, American Legion Post 200, and Scout Master of Troop One, All Saints Episcopal Church. In addition to his wife, Helen he is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws, Sharon Lee and John Augustyniak and Beth Ann and George Crawford both of Meriden, a son Richard K. Dupuis of Meriden, two sisters, Bernice Eichman and Beryl Convery, two brothers, Bruce Dupuis and Thomas Scism, and a sister-in-law, Moira Tomlinson. He also leaves eight grandchildren; Lee Ann Barre, Michael Barre, Tracy and her husband Bill Harper, John Augustyniak Jr., Wayne and his wife Kimberly Crawford, Chuck and his wife Jessica Crawford, Stephanie Dupuis and Sarah Dupuis, ten great-grandchildren, Rachael, Steven, Jonathan, Joseph, Brianna, Billy, Kaitlynn, Jonathan, Shauna and Caitlin, and twins, Raven and Sage who will be born into Arthur's legacy in the fall, many beloved nieces and nephews and many special friends at Masonic Healthcare Center. He was predeceased by his step-mother, Thelma Dupuis, step-father Charles Scism, two brothers, Robert Dupuis and Harold Dupuis and a sister-in-law, Betty Dupuis, brothers-in-law, James Convery, Robert Eichman and George Tomlinson and a daughter-in-law Susan Dupuis.
Funeral service Tuesday, July 13 at 10:00 a.m. from Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden and at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church 201 West Main St., Meriden. The Rev. Irvin (Sherm) Gagnon will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, July 12 from 4-8:30 p.m. An Amaranth service will be held at 7:30 p.m. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the heathcare team and support staff at the Masonic Healthcare Center. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Book of Remembrance, All Saints Episcopal Church, 201 West Main St., Meriden, Ct 06451.

Stoughton C. Spear, 77, of 425 Sterling PL., Hamden, passed away on June 30, 2004 after a long illness. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Lillian Whiteman Spear. Born Sept. 12, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late Clarence and Alice Fox Spear. Before graduating from high school, Stoughton left to serve his country as a seaman in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. While in the service he was awarded the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. After his return he graduated from Cushing Academy and the University of Bridgeport. He worked for Sikorsky Aircraft as a Purchasing Agent. He was a member of the High Lane Club, the Dunbar United Church of Christ, the American Legion, and was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Washington Lodge # 19 of Monroe. Besides his wife, he leaves his mother-in-law, Gladys Broan of Ormond Beach, FL, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine and Robert Doolittle of Ormond Beach, FL, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marland and Jeanette Whiteman of West Redding, CT, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Charles F. and Robert A. Spear, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marilyn and Leslie Withell.

Jean Catheryn Harkins Reilly, 80, formerly of Norwood Ave. and Delsole Rd., Hamden, died Wed., July 7, at the Hospice at Coes Pond in Worcester, MA after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Matthew A. Reilly, the daughter of the late Milton W. and Mary Kelleher Harkins and was born on May 12, 1924 in New Haven. She lived in Hamden for most of her life until her recent move to Shrewsbury. She was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield/Anthem as a claims representative, managed Broker’s Casuals, and worked for the Hamden National Bank, SNET and other businesses before her retirement in 1986. She was a veteran stationed at the US Naval Hospital in Brooklyn from 1944-46. As an active community member at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, she sat on the Board of Friends of the Hamden Library and volunteered at Edgerton Gardens and the Hamden Beautification Committee, and many other community service organizations. She is survived by her children; Jane and James Allen of Groton, MA; Kathleen Morrow Reilly and Lance Morrow of South Orange, NJ; and James A. and Kathryn D. Reilly of Shrewsbury, MA and seven grandchildren. She will be missed by her many dear friends and relatives.
Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Sat., July 10 at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 10 a.m. Interment in Centerville Cemetery. Born in New Haven, Dec. 15, 1925, daughter of the late Salvatore and Vita DiNicola. Mrs. Franco was employed by the former Roby Lyn Company, New Haven as a seamstress prior to her retirement. He was a member of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Hamden. She was the loving mother of Laura A. Cupo and son-in-law Nicholas Cupo of West Haven and Virginia Toce Williams of East Haven 3 sisters, Rose Vitelli and Connie Vitelli and Mary Iamele all of West Haven. Also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many loving friends. She was predeceased by her first husband Joseph " Taffy " Toce and a sister, Vita "Dee" Biondi.

Kenneth Stuart Grandy

In Sequim, Washington, July 1, 2004, Kenneth Stuart Grandy, 91, formerly of Meriden, husband of the late Virginia Coggins Grandy. He was born Jan. 6, 1913 in Barrington, RI, son of the late Leonard Wyles and Hattie Burdick Grandy. He grew up in Plantsville, CT and later moved to Meriden where he lived most of his adult life. He was the former president of J.B. Coggins Mfg. Co. in Meriden until his retirement when moved to the State of Washington. Mr Grandy was a avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing in both salt and fresh water. He maintained a boat in Stonington, CT for many years. He also enjoyed playing golf. His favorite hobby was raising white faced Hereford cattle on his farm, called Waters Edge Farm, in Wallingford. He also enjoyed many summers at their cottage on Lake Pocotaupaug, in East Hampton, CT. He was a member of Meriden Lions Club, Meriden Rod and Gun Club and also a Shriner and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Meriden. He is survived by a daughter, Gayle Hettrick of Berlin, CT, two sons, Stuart Grandy of Plantsville and Kenneth T. Grandy of Plantsville, a brother, Theodore B. Grandy of Plantsville, a daughter-in-law, Ruth Grandy of Yalesville. Also survived by ten grandchildren, Laura St.Jean, Douglas Grandy, Paul Grandy, Donald Grandy, John Grandy, Susan LeBel, Linda Hettrick, Debbie Hoyt, Steven Hettrick, Jeffrey Hettrick and their spouses. He also leaves his former second wife Anne and a stepson, Michael of Sequim, Washington. He also leaves many great and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Winfred Grandy and Ralph Grandy and a sister Ethel Grandy and a son Donald K. Grandy.

Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter Annie Gaudet and 5 sisters and 5 brothers. Mrs. Gaudet was born in North Anson, Maine, daughter of the late Cyril and Regina Duguay Bredeau. She was a member of St. John Vianney Church and the Ladies Guild of the parish and a volunteer at Surfside and Line Dancing at the West Haven Boardwalk. Mrs Gaudet was a avid bingo player. The family would like to thank the staff at the Harborview Manor for the excellent care they extended to our mother.

MERIDEN - Harold W. Behnke, 95, formerly of 1244 No. Broad St., died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Center at the Curtis Home. He was the husband of Helen Wright Behnke. Born in Meriden, June 25, 1909, he was the son of the late Theodore and Helen Klingenschmidt Behnke. He was a high school graduate and until his retirement had been employed as a toolmaker at International Silver Company. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and their wives, Richard and Connie Behnke of Durham and David and Gladys Behnke of Clinton; a grandson, David Behnke of Wallingford and a granddaughter, Christine Behnke-Le of Boston. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter Behnke and Theodore Behnke.
Funeral service Saturday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
