MERIDEN - Frances J. Freeland, 51, of Wilbur Ave. died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at her residence. Born in Meriden on June 9, 1952, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Renkiewicz Boyko and the late Walter Beaudoin. She was employed as a per diem nurse for many area hospitals and was a devout member of Jehovah's Witnesses. Besides her mother and stepfather, she is survived by two sisters, Josie Beaudoin and Victoria Hyatt, both of Wethersfield; two brothers, Cliff Beaudoin of Plantsville and Paul Beaudoin of Endicott, NY. She is also survived by 2 nieces and a nephew, Nicole Cote of Granby, MA, Tiffany Beaudoin of Chicopee, MA and Jeremy Hyatt of Connecticut as well as many great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sat. Feb. 14, 2004 at 4 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 410 Main St., South Meriden, CT. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.

Hans Walter Hafner, 42, of Orange St. New Haven son of Walter A. and Elsie Gumz Hafner of Meriden passed away Friday, February 13, 2004. He was born in Meriden, March 27, 1961 and graduated from Maloney H. S. in 1979. He then graduated from the Hartt School of Music and from Connecticut State College. He was employed by Wacovia, formerly Union Trust Bank as a teller manager for over 20 years. Hans loved his family, friends, and music and travel. He had a particular passion for opera and maintained a correspondence with many of his friends in that world. He started his involvement with music at the age of 16 and matured to a conductor of the Edelweis Chorus in West Haven. He was a former organist at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in New Haven and a featured soloist at many other congregations. In addition to his parents he is survived by his sister, Linda H. Murphy and her husband, Gavin Murphy of Hebron, CT, his uncle and aunt, Klaus and Ginny Gumz and many cousins in the US and Germany.
Friends may call Tuesday, Feb. 17 from 4 - 8 p.m. at the BEECHER & BENNETT FLATOW FUNERAL HOME, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Funeral service Wed. at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Ave., Meriden. Rev. David Brinkley will officiate. Burial in Gethsemane Cemetery will be private. Suzanne D. Etter (Susie) 63 of Harwinton CT, formerly of Hamden, CT, passed away at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital on January 28, 2004, after a brief illness. Susie was born October 31, 1940 in New Haven, CT and was the daughter of the late Dorothy and Harold Demond. She was the beloved wife of Herbert H. Etter. In addition to her husband, Susie is survived by her step-sons, Stephen, William, David, Thomas and John Etter and her daughters-in-law, Karlee, Sheree, Deirdre, Joanne and Mary. She will be missed by her thirteen devoted grandchildren and numerous friends, including childhood friend Marsha Hilditch. Susie was a graduate of Emerson College in Boston. Following graduation she moved to California where she was chief operating room nurse at Redwood General Hospital. Susie was an accomplished horsewoman and loved to ride. She particularly enjoyed introducing children to the sport.
A memorial mass, to celebrate Susie's life, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, at the intersection of routes 4 and 118, in Harwinton, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Brone Callahan Community Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 248, Harwinton, CT 06791, where she was a member of the board of directors.

Wallingford - Dorothy S. Rennie, 86, wife of the late Ernest W. Rennie passed away Friday January 16, 2004 in the Masonic Geriatric Health Care Center. She was born in New Haven Feb. 10, 1917 a daughter of the late Carl and Elizabeth Lane Schildbach and had resided in West Haven before moving to Florida in 1971, and later to Wallingford in 1990. Mrs. Rennie was a saleslady at the former Edw. Malley Co. of New Haven and was a member of the First Lutheran Church of West Haven. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Carl W. and Loretta Rennie of Hamden, Ernest G. and Joyce Rennie of Northford, 6 grandchildren; Cheryl Rennie-Smith, Deborah Welton, Carl T. Rennie, Bonnie DellaRocco, Keith Rennie, and Tracie Sires, and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 3 sisters, Gertrude (Betty) Anderson, Hilda Paterson, and Edna Vass.
Friends may call at BEECHER & BENNETT 2300 Whitney Ave. Hamden Tuesday Jan. 20, from 6-8 PM. A prayer service officiated by Rev. Owen Sanderson will be at 7:30PM. In Wallingford, January 27, 2004, Russell Charles Hintz of 65 Masonic Ave., formerly of Hamden, husband of the late Ebba Berg Hintz. Born in New Haven, April 4, 1914, he was the son of the late Ernest F. and Mary Usinger Hintz. A veteran of W.W. II, he served with Co. C, 289th Infantry Div. of the U.S. Army. After his discharge, Russ attended Stone Busines School and became a Store Manager for A & P, retiring after 40 years. He was a member of Hiram Lodge # 1, A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite and Pyramid Temple Shriners, where he participated in the Drum and Bugle Corp. In later years, he move to the Johnson Apartments on the Masonicare Campus in Wallingford. He is survived by his; son, Russell B. Hintz and his wife Susan of Milford, daughters, Nancy H. Moore and her husband Robert of Prospect and Linda H. Gancarz and her husband Walter of Cheshire, a brother, Lester E. Hintz of Wallingford, grandchildren; Jason, Christopher and Jared Moore, Eric and Adam Hintz, Jaclyn, April, and Tiffany Gancarz, and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers; Elmer and Irving Hintz and a sister, Miriam Hintz.

Gladys P. Bohman, 92, died Friday, January 30, 2004, in Hamden, Connecticut. She was a longtime resident of Royal Oak, Michigan, and widow of Prof. George V. Bohman, former chair of the Department of Speech, Wayne State University. Daughter of the late Robert H. Presley and Blanche West Presley, she was born April 21, 1911, in Collinsville, Illinois, and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee. She graduated from East Tennessee State Teachers College and earned an M.A. in history from the University of Wisconsin. A teacher and homemaker, she was active in the First Congregational Church of Royal Oak and in the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches. She is survived by son Robert P. Bohman and wife Rev. Mary C. Bohman of Joliet, Montana, by son Eric J. Bohman and wife LouAnn S. Bohman of New Haven, CT, and also by granddaughter Anna Katherine Nentwig (Jeremy), grandson Leif-Erik S. Bohman, and great-grandson Seager Nentwig.
Private interment services will be held in Princeton, Illinois. MERIDEN - Iris Tomms Kiss, 90, formerly of 88 Milton Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Aaron Kiss. Born in Wallingford on Dec. 31, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Francis H. and Charlotte Thacker Tomms. She attended schools in Wallingford and Meriden and graduated from Laurel College in Meriden. She was the principal of Water's Edge Baptist Day School in Maryland. Iris was a member of Meridian Chapter #8, Order of Eastern Star; historian of Westwood Court #5, Order of Amaranth; member of Meriden Woman's Club; American Legion Auxiliary Unit 45, where she won the State Silver Cup for Americanism, Publicity and Endeavors and, in addition, she served the Auxiliary during WW II as Americanism chairman and won the Silver Cup for Americanism and Publicity; chairman of decorations for many years for different organizations including the Fellowcraft Club of Meriden. She was president of the Meriden Fellowcraft Wives' Circle, also Circle #3 at the First Congregational Church and for several years was in charge of decorations for the Annual May Breakfast. She was active, along with her husband Aaron Kiss, in the Meriden Bicentennial as a liaison between the American Legion Auxiliary #45 and the Bicentennial Committee. She was a hostess for many overflow tables for the annual Christmas luncheon of the Meriden Woman's Club, as well as writing poetry for Pegasus for the Meriden newspaper.
She is survived by a son, Robert William Arther of Meriden; a daughter, Iris Arther Maturo of Swazyne, Virginia; four grandchildren, John Wesley Arther III of Meriden, William Arther of Punta Gorda, FL, Frederick Arther of Monroe and Iris Gail Maturo of Swazyne, VA; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan Arther, Stephen Arther, Kevin Arther and Michael Arther, all of Monroe, Rebecca Arther, Lilly Arther and John Arther, all of Meriden, William Arther of Southington and Iris Maturo of Swazyne, VA; a sister, Ida Tomms Rowe; two brothers, Laurence F. Tomms and John H. Tomms; and four stepchildren, Francis Brown, Nelson Kiss, Lucille Goodale and Peggy Gervascio. She was predeeased by a son, John Wesley Arthur II and a sister, Winifred Tomms Cooke.
The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 201 West Main St., Meriden. The Rev. Irving Sherm Gagnon will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.

MERIDEN - Arthur A. Valando, 85, of 511 Kensington Avenue died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at MidState Medical Center. He was the devoted husband of Patricia Reuss Valando and was a loving family man. Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 28, 1918, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Georgia Smith Valando. He was the owner of the Valando Music Publishing Company in New York City and had served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Joseph Dostilio and two grandchildren, Joseph Arthur Dostilio IV and Dillon James Dostilio, all of Meriden.

Beatrice S. Wood, 90, passed away Feb. 13, 2004 at the Masonic Geriatric Health Care Center. She was born in Guilford, June 18, 1913 a daughter of the late Alonzo and Katherine B. Wade Shufelt and resided in New Haven and West Haven before moving to Wallingford in 1994. She worked for SNET as a Supervisor for over 31 years. Beatrice was survived by her two loving children, Phyllis Pearson Clark and her husband, Thomas of Branford, Raymond A. Wood and his wife, Marion Lapan of Oak View, CA, her grandchildren, Jill Clark Lipman, Sally Clark Funnell and her husband James, great-grandchildren, Jessica and Chloe Lipman, Charlotte and James Funnell. Predeceased by her brother Alonzo Shufelt.

Dunbar and her husband, John M. of Worcester, MA, Wendy A. Cayward and her husband, Darren of Hamden, Thomas A. Gilmore and his wife Gail A. of Cheshire and Robert W. Gilmore and his wife, Lorri A. of New Baden, IL, brother of George H. Gilmore of North Haven, grandfather of Sean, Kimberly and Megan Dunbar, Emma Cayward, Matthew and Lauren Gilmore, Tyler and Courtney Gilmore. He was predeceased by sisters, Clara Bewerse, Isabella Bergmann and a brother, David P. Gilmore. Warren was born in New Haven, July 25, 1923, a son of the late Robert James and Clara Buchta Gilmore. Warren served in the Army during WW II in China, Berma and India and was a member of CT National Guard for 28 years where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He received and Associate degree from New Haven College and had worked at Winchester Repeating Arms for 22 years and later retired from Colt Firearms as a plant supervisor retiring in 1988 after 25 years of service. He was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church of New Haven were he was an ordained Deacon was a senior warden and served on the vestry. He was and active member of many Masonic organizations including Day Spring Lodge #30 A.F. & A.M. where he was Past Master in 1969 and was Chaplain for 4 terms, District Deputy of the Grand Lodge of CT 1984-86, member of Alice Chapter # 76 O.E.S, Worthy Grand Patron O.E.S. for the state 1982-83, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of New Haven, Lafayette Consistory of Bridgeport, he became a 32 degree Mason on May 1, 1970, member of National Sojourners - Hartford Chapter #56 were he was Past President and Past Commander. He also volunteered at the Masonic Home and Hospital for several years.
Funeral service Friday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 830 Whitney Ave., New Haven. Friends may call Thurs. from 3 - 8 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. A Masonic Service by Day Spring Lodge will be at 7 PM. Burial with Military Honors in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
