Guido W. DiMartino, 92, of 111 Messina Drive, East Haven, formerly of 89 Coleman St., West Haven, died Aug. 9, 2007. He was the beloved husband for 65 years of the late Jennie M. D’Angelo DiMartino. Beloved husband, father & grandfather, he was born in Guardiagrele, Chieti, Italy on March 1, 1915, son of the late Guiseppe & Serafina DiPrinzio DiMartino.He came to this country at the age of 9. He worked as a dispatcher for T.A.D. Jones/Gulf Oil for 50 years prior to retirement. He was a member of The West Haven I.A. Civic Assn., the East Haven and Annex Senior Citizens. He is survived by a son, Frank P. DiMartino of Madison; a daughter, Carol (William) Mathews of East Haven; a brother, Joseph DiMartino of New Haven; 2 sisters, Ann Piscatelli of North Haven & Gloria Pero of New Haven; 7 grandchildren, Cheryl, Frank Jr., Debra, Christina, Anna Maria, Guido III & Stephen; and 9 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Guido W. DiMartino Jr.; a brother, Jerry V. DiMartino; 2 sisters, Carmel Pantalone & Vera Tacuone; and 2 great grandchildren, Kylie Ann & Kaitlyn Nicole.

MARATHAS, CONSTANTINE- Constantine “Gus” Marathas, 69, loving husband of Catherine Besbessides Marathas of Orange died in New Haven August 7, 2007 after a brief illness. He was the father of Alexander Marathas of New Haven, the brother of Demetra (Manny) Kalogianes of Wethersfield and the late Maria Stroboer He was the brother in law of Angie Arnaoutis and Mary Mattie. Mr. Marathas was born in New Haven January 12, 1938 a son of the late Alexander and Bessie Laggis Marathas. Gus served in the US Navy and was a regional sales manager for several corporations that manufactured industrial valves. He is also survived by his nephew George (Kelly) Arnaoutis and their children Haley, Nicole, and Andrew and his niece Maria (Anthony) and her children Aubrie and Krystina.

Manuel J. Fortes, 82, of 1146 Wintergreen Ave., Hamden, passed away July 29, 2007 in Marathon Health Center, West Haven. He was the husband of Lillian Stoner Fortes. Mr. Fortes was born in New Haven May 5, 1925, son of the late Joseph & Josephine Brito Fortes. He worked as a technician in the Division of Animal Care at Yale University until his retirement 12 years ago. During World War II, he served in the US Army in the European War Zone. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal and was a member of the Hamden VFW Post 10321. Beside his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Antonio “Tony” Fortes of North Haven, Manuel “Joe” Fortes Jr. of Hamden & John (Melba) Fortes of New Haven; 3 daughters, Patricia (Emerson) Stevenson of New Haven, Barbara Ann (Jack) Fortes of Hamden and Bernadette Sisk of New York; a sister in law, Dolores Fortes of Hamden; 6 grandchildren and 2 grand daughters. He was predeceased by a brother, Antonio Fortes and a sister, Mary Antunes.

Anna Lettieri Barra of 22 Masonic Ave., Wallingford, formerly of 355 Ferry St., New Haven, passed away July 27, 2007 at the Masonic Geriatric Health Care Center. Born in New Haven, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore & Barbara Constantinople Lettieri. Prior to her retirement in 1985, she was a sewing machine operator for Sleep Stuff for 18 years. She is survived by a sister, Antoinette Nemeth of Wallingford; brothers John Papero of New Haven & Joseph Lettieri; several nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Louis Lettieri and four sisters, Margaret Petri, Dorothy Maher, Mary Apicelli & Sarah Lettieri Alfone.

Salvatore Piccolo, 85, of West Haven passed away July 26, 2007 in Harbor View Manor, West Haven. Born in New Haven Dec. 23, 1921, he was the son of the late Umberto & Lucia Esposito Piccolo. He worked at various trades throughout his life. He is survived by a brother, Albert Piccolo of Hamden; 4 sisters, Mary Minnella of Yardley, PA., Jane Shaffer & Virginia Piccolo of New York City and Jessie O’Neill of Reston, VA. and several nieces & nephews. Concetta Raymond Pastore, 87, of 321 Eastern St., New Haven, passed away July 25, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. She was the widow of Frank Pastore & Charles Raymond. Born in West Haven in Sept 17, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Vincent & Maria Pergolatto. She is survived by a son, William C. (Eloise Ballard) Raymond of Naugatuck; 4 sisters, Anna D’Amico, Judy Ferrie, Susan Faggiana & Mary (Edward) Kelly, all of West Haven; a grandson, Michael Raymond of Waterbury; a great granddaughter, Melissa and several nieces & nephews. GRANDE, MARY

Mary Ulizio Grande, 101, of Westerly, R.I. and Hamden, CT. entered into peaceful eternal rest at her home on July 25, 2007. She was the widow of Carlo H. Grande. Born in New Haven on Palm Sunday, April 16, 1906, she was christened Palma Maria Ulizio, daughter of the late Antonio and Francesca Zullo Ulizio. She graduated from Hillhouse High School and the former Arnold College, and studied at Columbia University. She was a member of the legendary Radio City Music Hall Rockettes dancing troupe and was recreational director at the New York Boys Club. Mrs. Grande taught school for more than 50 years, including 40 years with the New Haven school system, rising to the position of Supervisor of Physical Education. She retired in 1970. With her lifelong friend, Ellen L. Celentano, she originated and directed the “Harvest Festival Committee” in the 1950’s. This involved all area high schools and included an elaborate Pageant at Yale Bowl. With Pat Morro, she established the after school recreation program at Trowbridge Recreation Center, which produced some of New Haven’s finest young athletes. She was the first to establish a summer recreational playground program for the New Haven Dept. of Parks & Recreation and ran that program for many years, presenting many historical pageants on the New Haven Green during the 1950’s & 1960’s. The recipient of numerous awards from local organizations, she was active for many years in the Mayor’s New Haven Columbus Day Committee, the Italian American Society, the Hamden Republican Women’s Club, and was the first secretary of the inaugural Walter Camp Football Foundation Committee. She was a member of the Governor’s Committee on Physical Fitness under Gov. John Dempsey and helped to establish the committee for the formulation of the Church of the Ascension Parish in Hamden. After moving to Westerly, Mary was a member of the Westerly Board of Education Building Committee. More than anything, she cherished her family and friends and was always happiest when with them. Her family will be forever grateful for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Rodney Steller and the late Dr. Luca E. Celentano in New Haven and Dr. Robert Serra & Staff in Westerly. In recent years, Mary was blessed with the spiritual enrichment of Pastor Kenneth Suibielski & Deacon Carl LaFleur of St. Clare’s Church, Misquamicut, R.I.; the love and care of attending friends & family; and Hospice care in Westerly, all of whom brightened her life each day. “We thank you and we love you”. She is survived by a son & daughter in law, George and JoAnne Grande of Hamden; Pat Grande, former wife of Carlo II of Westerly; a grandson, Geoffrey Grande and granddaughter, Jaime and her husband, Bryan McAllister Grande. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Carlo H. Grande; a son, Carlo Grande II; 3 brothers, George, Paul & Louis Ulizio and 5 sisters, Julia Conte, Amelia Barberi, Carmel Angelo, Rose DeFalco & Luisa Purpora.

Antoinette (Annette) Paduano DeMeola, 92, formerly of North St., Hamden, passed away July 6, 2007 in Harborside Madison House. She was the widow of Thomas DeMeola. Mrs. DeMeola, was born in New Haven March 15, 1915, daughter of the late Pietro & Maria Assunta Guarino Paduano. She is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Stranova and her husband, Thomas of Colleyville, TX & Lucille Ramadei and her husband, Mark of Madison; and four grandchildren, Thomas Stranova Jr. and his wife, Virginia of New Orleans, LA., Nicole Stranova of Ft. Worth, TX., Dana Stranova of Colleyville, TX. & Danielle Ramadei of New York City. She was predeceased by a brother, Louis Paduano & a sister, Rose Simeone. Mary Jane Daurio Pelliccio, 49, of 25 Peters Lane, North Haven, passed away peacefully at home July 3, 2007. She was the wife of Anthony G. Pelliccio. Born in New Haven Sept. 9, 1957, she was the daughter of the late James & Ruby Powers Daurio. Mary Jane held clerical positions at King’s Dept. Store, Ames, Stop & Shop and A T & T and worked at the Box Office at the New Haven Coliseum for several years until it closed on Aug. 30, 2002. Beside her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Rose Pelliccio of North Haven; a brother, Patrick “Buddy” Powers of Orange; a sister, Joan Schlauder of New Haven; and many devoted friends & family. She was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite “Maggie” Daurio.

Johnnie Mae Sanders Davis, 72 of 157 Clay St., New Haven passed away July 1, 2007 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford. She was the beloved wife of Paul Davis Sr. Born in Shorter, AL. on July 7, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Antonio & Mary Lee Sanders Chardon. She came to New Haven in 1956 and worked at Grace New Haven Hospital (now Yale New Haven) She met and married
Paul Davis in 1957. They were married
50 years and never left each other’s side until her death on July 1, 2007. She was a member of East Rock Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for the past 35 years, never waivering. Mrs. Davis leaves to grieve her passing two sons, Paul Davis Jr. & Antonio Davis, both of New Haven; three daughters, Tamela Davis Bash of West Haven, Sandy M. & Ira S. Davis, both of New Haven; 14 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives & friends. She was predeceased by her 3 oldest children including Amos Sanders.
