David D. “Dave” Harding, 46, of 41 Howard Ave., New Haven passed away Dec. 11, 2007 in Yale New Haven Hospital following a long illness battling juvenile diabetes. He was the husband of Ruth E. Swanton. Born in New Haven Sept. 9, 1961, he was the son of John & Jean Viera Harding of Florida. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Syracuse in 1983. He began his sales career as a sales manager of rare book collections; worked in antique sales; became a financial advisor; and then a middle school teacher. He earned a master’s degree in teaching in 1995 and a master’s degree in science at Quinnipiac in 2001. David loved being a teacher, but, during his first position, his kidneys failed. Despite a kidney transplant donated by his Dad, he was unable to continue. An inspiration, he lived a full, yet short life. His teaching began again following the birth of daughter, Kate, age 5. A renaissance man, he will be missed for his laughter, wit and zest for fun, movies, music and learning. Beside his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Katherine Grace Swanton Harding of New Haven; a brother, Jack (Vanessa Rose) Harding of Seymour and a sister, Kim (David) Vegliante of Wallingford; nieces & nephews, Samuel, Raymond, Maxwell & Mary of Seymour, Jack & Olivia of Wallingford. He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Olivia Veira and his aunt, Diane Radcliffe. A special thanks to Dr. Rex Mahnensmith, MD and Warren Fleming, RN at Davita Dialysis Unit; and to the many physicians and nurses at Yale New Haven Hospital and Brook Hollow Health Care Center who assisted in his quest to continue his life.

SHEATS III, GOVERNOR

Governor Sheats III, 63, departed this life Dec. 7, 2007. Born in Athens, GA. July 21, 1944, he was the son of the late Governor Sheats Jr. & Floreen Barnett. He was cared for by his mother until he entered Southbury Training School in 1958 at the age of 14. He was transferred to Hillside Manor in Hartford in 1976, at the age of 32. He came to Marrakech-Cortina House in East Haven in 1991, to be closer to his family. He is survived by 4 sisters, Jackie Sheats & Kathie Simmons, both of New Haven, Frankee Goodman of Hamden & Vicki Watson of Odenton, MD.; a brother, Eddie (Adrienne) Sheats of Hamden; 10 nieces & nephews, 17 great nieces & nephews, and a special niece, Steyfanie Hudgens who assisted in his care.
Funeral services will be held in The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven, Friday, Dec. 14th at 11:00 with the Rev. Dr. C.M. Cofield officiating. Friends may call prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM. Interment in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
LINDQUIST, JOHN E.

John E. (Swede) Lindquist, 87, of 400 Blatchley Ave., New Haven, passed away Dec. 6, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the husband of Josephine Piscitelli Lindquist. “Swede” was born in New Haven Dec. 12, 1919, son of the late Gustaf & Anna Lindquist. Well known throughout the New Haven area, he retired from The UI Co. after 40 years in the Employment Relations Dept. as Personnel Service Administrator. He served in the US Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 88 in Hamden. He served as vice chairman of the New Haven Coliseum Authority for 26 years under five mayoral administrations; former softball commissioner for State of CT.; past president of CT Amateur Softball Assn.; past vice chairman of CT State Boating Commission; chairman of REGISTER Fresh Air Fund Special Events, raising over $130, 000 in 18 years; vice chairman of Albie Booth Memorial Fund; past president of New Haven Football Foundation and Hall of Fame; past president of Industrial Recreation Council – YMCA; past commodore of Branford Yacht Club; and was a member of New Haven Tap-Off Club, East Haven Stoners, Connecticut Hospice Committee, Farnham Neighborhood House Board of Directors, Russell Council No. 65, Knights of Columbus and John Barry Assembly, Fourth Degree, K of C. He was also a Deputy Sheriff for New Haven County. His numerous awards included the Distinguished American Award by National Football Foundation, New Haven Chapter; the Charles Carroll of Carrolton Medal by the Knights of Columbus; the Veritas Award from Providence College; the Friars Award from St. Mary’s High School Alumni Assn.; the Gold Ring Award from the Albie Booth Boys Club; Benedictine Medal of Honor from St. Leo’s College; Friendship Award from Ancient Order of Hibernians; Humanitarian Awards from Knights of St. Patrick in 1991 and from Maples A.C.; Jimmy Fund Cancer Award; Sport Service Award by Sport Magazine; New Haven Register Fresh Air Fund Award; Carmine Criscuolo Memorial Award; and received Merit Awards from New Haven Football Foundation & New Haven Athletic Club. He was honored by having a softball field named for him; was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame; and was the subject of “The Salute of the Month” by the New Haven Register in February 1979.Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Arnold Lindquist and a sister, Edna Dunn.

William (Vasilios) Sofokleous, 86, of 139 E. Mitchell Ave., Cheshire, passed away Dec. 1, 2007 in Mid State Medical Center. He was the husband of Pelagia (Peggy) Mastrandonas Sofokleous. Mr. Sofokleous was born in Cyprus April 18, 1921, son of the late Sophacles & Rebecca Sofokleous (St. John). Before coming to this country, he served with the British Armed Forces for 6 years during World War II and saw action against the German Army in North Africa. He owned and operated Bill’s Lunch on Forbes Ave. in the Annex and also worked at the Hiway Diner. He was a member of New Britain Chapter 117, Order of AHEPA. Beside his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Marina (James) Benas of Cheshire; 2 grandchildren, Nicole & Christopher Benas and several nieces & nephews. Mary D’Amato Creto, 96, of 38 Highwood Ave., Hamden, passed away Nov, 30, 2007 in The Arden House. She was the widow of Carmine A. Creto and was a former resident of Porter St., New Haven. Born in New Haven Jan. 18, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Fortunata Caporossi D’Amato. She is survived by a son, Anthony J. (Carol) Creto of Hamden; a daughter, Mary Murgo of Cheshire; a brother, Anthony D’Amato of New Haven; a sister, Yolanda D’Amato of New Haven; 3 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Creto and 4 sisters, Edith Fusco, Carrie Arpino, Rose & Julia Fusco.

Mary Traggis, 82, of 850 Mix Ave., Hamden, passed away peacefully Nov. 30, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven. She was a former resident of 311 Eastern St., New Haven. Mary was born in New Haven Aug. 3, 1925, daughter of the late Peter and Athena Petrelis Traggis. She was a graduate of Commercial High School and was employed as a clerical worker at the University of New Haven. Through the years, she contributed her skillfulness to numerous family businesses, including Demetrius Candy Shop operated by her father on Chapel St. in New Haven and Wepawaug Marina operated by her brother. Mary was a kind and generous woman whose heart and home were always open to all. She is survived by her brother, Demetrius (Jim) Traggis of Hamden; and numerous godchildren, cousins and close friends.
Friends are invited to attend funeral services in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Rd., Orange Wednesday, Dec. 5th at 11:00. Calling hours prior to the funeral from 10:00 to 11:00. Estrella Villabona Buenaventura, 85, of 19 Meadowbrook Rd., Woodbridge, passed away Nov. 26, 2007 at home. She was the widow of Antonio E. Buenaventura and was a former resident of 785 Edgewood Ave., New Haven. Mrs. Buenaventura was born in Mauban, Quezon Prov., Phillippines on March 13, 1922. Before coming to this country, she was a school teacher. She is survived by a son, Antonio (Carmen)Buenaventura Jr, of Hamden;2 daughters, Dr. Erlinda (Dr. Cristino) Enriquez of Miami & Divinia (Orfilo) Hofilena of Woodbridge; a brother, Cesar Villabona of North Haven; 2 sisters, Filipena Ustare of San Francisco, CA. and Dulce Imperial in the Phillippines; 10 grandchildren & 11 great grandchildren.

Sophia Arabolos Chipouras, 89, formerly of 200 Oak St., West Haven, passed away Nov. 24, 2007 at the home of her son in Winter Garden, Fla. She was the widow of George Chipouras. Born in New Britain on Sept. 25, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Peter & Irene Meliris Arabolos. She was a graduate of Hillhouse High School and attended Collegiate Preparatory School in New Haven. She worked at A.C. Gilbert Co. during and after WW II. After her marriage in 1947, she moved to Washington, D.C. and resided there until her husband’s unexpected passing in 1960. A long time resident of West Haven, she was a substitute teacher at St. Lawrence School and later, worked as a dental assistant for her brother, Dr. Michael Arabolos. She was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Angelo G. & Sandie Chipouras of Winter Garden, FL.; sister and brother in law, Lillian & Edward Basel of East Haven; 1 grand daughter, Anastasia; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Aftosmes and 5 brothers, Gregory (Hank), John, George, Charles and Dr. Michael Arabolos.

Helen Calandrella Guagliumi, 94, of 7 Warner Road, North Haven, passed away Nov. 15, 2007 in Hamden Health Care. She was the widow of Christopher Guagliumi and was a former resident of 207 Bellevue Ave., West Haven for more than 50 years. She was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Church and a member of its Women’s Club. She is survived by a son, Arthur (Susan) Guagliumi of Northford; a daughter, Carol (Julius R.) Marcarelli of North Haven; 4 sisters, Georgianna DiDioia of Hamden, Marge Pellegrino of Wallingford, Virginia Vitelli of West Haven and Rita Perrotti of Woodbridge; 4 grandchildren, Jordan C. Guagliumi of Merrimack, N.H., Kristen M. Senise of Cheshire, Paul L. Marcarelli of Guilford and N.Y.C. and Lt. Matthew J. Marcarelli of Northford; and 6 great grandchildren. William H. Redding, 82, of 95 Curry Road, Hamden, passed away Nov. 13, 2007 in Whitney Manor. He was the husband of Helen Agrimis Redding. Mr. Redding was born in New Haven Sept. 26, 1925, son of the late James M. and Emily Williams Redding. He was a draftsman by trade but worked in the Town of Hamden School System for many years. He was a member of the Hamden Elks, Hamden V.F.W. Post and the Ridge Road Seniors. Beside his wife, he is survived by a son, Paul W. (Barbara) Redding of Hamden; a daughter, Diane Redding of Wallingford; a brother, Robert Redding of East Haven; and 2 grandchildren, Matthew & T.J. Redding of Hamden. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Edward, James & John Redding.

Anne Esposito Maturo, 90, formerly of 916 Racebrook Road, Orange, passed away Nov. 12, 2007 in Branford Hills Health Care. She was the widow of John C. Maturo. Mrs. Maturo was born in New Haven Feb. 13, 1917, daughter of the late Salvatore & Louise Terrible Esposito. She worked as the book keeper at Empire Auto Body until her retirement. She is survived by 2 sons, Michael J. (Kim) Maturo of Stratford & John (Kathleen) Maturo of Orange; a daughter, Mary Lou (Daniel) Maturo Femniak of Wallingford; a sister, Marie Williams of San Diego; 5 grandchildren & 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Annette Ross; 2 brothers, Jack & Charles Esposito and a sister, Rose Williams.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Infant Church Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Beaverdale. For the past two years, Mrs. Maturo has lived at Branford Hills.
