Charles A. Setaro, 82, formerly of 77 Forest Road, West Haven, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2008 in The Connecticut Hospice surrounded by his loving family at his bedside. He was the husband of the late Rose Sandella Setaro. Mr. Setaro was born in New Haven Dec. 22, 1925, son of the late Donato James & Mary Genduso Setaro. He was a 50 year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America, formerly the Wood, Wire & Metal Lathers International Union. He was a partner in Setaro Realty on Main St. in East Haven. He is survived by a son, Charles J. (Nancy) Setaro of North Haven; two daughters, Donna (Ramesh) Sanghvi of Wallingford & Maureen (Michael)Bokowski of Milford; a brother, Peter Setaro of Branford; a sister, Dorothy Setaro of Branford; six grandchildren, Geeta, Dina, Michael S., Christina, Christopher & Joseph. He was predeceased by two brothers, Michael J. & Frank J. Setaro; a sister, Rosemary Cronin; and a grandson, Anthony Sanghvi, whom he loved and cherished.

Anna Bournazou Kookoolis, 87, of 12 Beech St., North Branford, passed away July 17, 2008 in Harborside Arden House after a brief illness. She was the widow of James Kookoolis and was a former resident of Osborn Ave., New Haven.Mrs. Kookoolis was born in Greece, April 19, 1921, daughter of the late Efstathios & Panayota Bournazou. She worked as a seamstress for Wonder Weavers for 25 years until her retirement. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church.She is survived by a son, Stanley J. (Donna) Kookoolis of North Branford; 4 grandchildren, Kevin & Anna Kookoolis, Carry Esposito & Antoinette DeSanto; and a sister in Greece. She was predeceased by a brother Nick & a sister Maria.

SMITH, MARY G.

Mary Lucille Griffin Smith, the 17th child of 18 born to James Henry Griffin and Clara Augusta Dullavan Griffin, was born on July 11, 1927 and departed this life on July 17, 2008. She was 81 years old. Mary was born in Bridgeport, CT where she spent her early years. Her family later moved to New Haven, CT. She finished her schooling and graduated from Commercial High School in 1945.
Mary was an active member of the Church of God and Saints of Christ all of her life. She was a choir member and sat as second alto. She held the position of Mother Sarah for a short time and then became Treasurer of the Daughters of Jerusalem and Sisters of Mercy. She was also chairperson for the Pastor’s Table committee and the Pulpit committee.
In 1961, Evangelist-at-large William Crowdy appointed Mary to the position of tabernacle secretary, and Rabbi Howard Z. Plummer made it official in 1962. She served in that capacity until her illness no longer allowed. The Board of Presbytery named her one of the best secretaries in the organization in the late 1960s.
Mary was a staunch supporter of the Church of God and Saints of Christ and served diligently under three leaders. She served under several ministers with the same zeal and integrity with which she carried herself. She was a devoted wife to the late Evangelist-at-large Jehu Obadiah Smith.
Mary was known for her delicious baked beans and for being a seamstress. The children, who always received a jumbo peppermint stick for the holidays, knew her as “Candy Lady”. She was a generous, giving person who helped anyone in need.
Mary worked as a paralegal for the New Haven Legal Assistance for 40 years.
Mary was predeceased by her youngest child, Clyde Dullavan Stallings. She is survived by three children Sharon Lucille Jones, Nathan Thomas Stallings (Dorothy), Clayton Matthew Stallings; one sister Rhoda Benson; one brother-in-law Rabbi Lloyd Gideon Smith; three sisters-in-law Hannah Lassiter, Priscilla Vann, SE Margaret Smith; five grandchildren Davina A. Jones, James E. Jones, Jr., Esther W. Jones, Ahmed J. Stallings and Danielle N. Stallings; three great-grandchildren Emani, Lana and Jalen Stallings; two godsons Anthony B. Benson and Jehu O. Marshall; devoted daughter-in-law Carena Stallings-McKane and a host of other family and friends.
Mary’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, July 24th at Wayfaring Ministries, 295 Treadwell St., Hamden. Wake from 5:45 to 6:45. Funeral Services will begin at 7:00 PM. Interment Friday, July 25th at 10:00 AM in Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven

Julia Barbato Martino DeVit, 88, of 10 River Road, North Haven, passed away July 13, 2008 at Maplewoods at Hamden. She was the widow of George DeVit. Mrs. DeVit was born in New Haven Jan. 2, 1920, daughter of the late Cosimo & Marie Ciancola Barbato. She was part owner of C.A. Barbato Printing Co. in New Haven. She was an accomplished Italian cook, a champion bowler, and an avid reader and card player who loved spending time with friends, family, and especially her great grandchildren. She was proud of the fact that she earned her GED at the age of 68. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn DeVit of North Haven & Jamia (Kevin) O’Brien of Hamden; two grandchildren, Amie (Sean) Sullivan & David (Abbie) O'Brien and two great grandchildren, Jack O'Brien & Drew Sullivan, and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, James Vincent Martino; 3 brothers, William, Robert & Andrew D. Barbato and 3 sisters, Florence Biondi, Gloria Lines & Genevieve Carlstrom.

Stefan Daniw, 84, of 320 Upson Terrace, New Haven, passed away July 12, 2008 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the husband of Parania Charandiuk Daniw. Mr. Daniw was born in Ukraine on Feb. 1, 1924, son of the late Peter & Maria Daniw. He came to this country in 1950. At the time of his retirement, he was a sheet metal worker for Safety Car Heating & Lighting. Prior to that, he worked for MIF in Branford. He was a member of Veterans of Ukrainian Insurgent Army and of St. Michael’s Holy Name Society. At one time, he was the head of the New Haven Branch of the Ukrainian American Youth Association. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Alexandra (Bruce) Hirsch of Lisbon, CT.; 2 sons, Jerry (Janet) Daniw of New Haven and Stephen (Cheryl) Daniw of East Haven; 2 sisters, Marie & Stephanie, both in Ukraine; 4 grandchildren, Amy Chapman, David Hirsch, Victoria & Stefan Daniw; and 2 great grandchildren, Stephanie & C.J. He was predeceased by a brother, Ivan & a sister, Eva.

Iola Valentino Tartaglione, 90, of 212 Shore Rd., Westerly, R.I., formerly of Hamden, died peacefully at home July 11, 2008. She was the widow of Ralph Tartaglione. Born in New Haven Oct. 3, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Julio Valentini & Norina Zandri Branchini. She was a resident of Hamden for 55 years until moving to Westerly in 1999 to live with her daughter. Mrs. Tartaglione was a graduate of Hillhouse High School, Class of 1934. She worked in Fine Jewelry for Macy’s – New Haven for many years. After achieving Certified Gemologist status through the Gemological Institute of America, she joined the appraisal department of Michael’s Jewelers in New Haven where she worked until retirement. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Grande of Westerly; her son, Ralph Tartaglione and his wife, Rev. Debra Haffner of Norwalk; two grandchildren, Gregory Tartaglione of Norwalk & Alyssa Tartaglione of New York City; two sisters, Lydia Antognette of Ansonia & Mary Geary of Madison; and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Alice Branchini.

Marie Marcarelli, 91, formerly of 123 East Mitchell Ave., Cheshire and 1460 Ella Grasso Blvd., New Haven, passed away peacefully July 10, 2008 in Highland Health Care Center, Cheshire. Born in New Haven Oct. 30, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Giulio and Annunziata Meglio Marcarelli. She worked for many years as an interior decorator and seamstress for the Oxford Shop, and later, for Anna’s Fabrics. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Brendan’s Church. She is survived by her sister in law, Mrs. Josephine Marcarelli of North Haven; 2 nieces; 2 nephews and many great nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by 2 brothers, Ralph V. and Julius R. Marcarelli and a sister, Rose Linfante.

Rachel Amendola, 52, of 197 Henry St., East Haven died June 30, 2008 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She put up a good fight but it was too much for her. Born in New Haven Sept. 22, 1955, she was the daughter of Marie Criscuolo Amendola and the late Anthony “Jazz” Amendola. She was the kindest, loving daughter a mother could want. To her Uncle Andy & Aunt Lena Munz, she was their love and joy from Day One. Known as the “Cookie Monster” to all, she was a prolific and talented producer of beautiful cookie trays. Besides her mother, aunt & uncle, she is survived by her aunt, Tina Amendola and 4 Amendola cousins, Andrea, Louise, Teresa & Christine. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her grandparents, Joseph & Lucy Criscuolo and Louis & Rachel Anendola; uncles, Andrew Amendola & Joseph Criscuolo.

Rudolph Williams, 78, of Grimes/St. Regis Health Care Center, 1354 Chapel St., New Haven, died there June 29, 2008. He was a former resident of Atrium Plaza, 240 Winthrop Avenue. Mr. Williams was born March 16, 1930. He worked at Winchester Repeating Arms Co. from 1959 to 1974.

Antoinette A. Esposito DeLucia, 79, of 236 Montowese Ave., North Haven, passed away June 27, 2008 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Albert A. DeLucia. Mrs. DeLucia was born in New Haven Aug. 24, 1928, daughter of the late Michael Esposito & Antoinetta Luciano. She worked until recently as a sales associate for Fashion Bug. She is survived by a son, David A. (Ruthanne) DeLucia; a grand daughter, Mai Power; her aunt, Mrs. Josephine Marcarelli, all of North Haven; a sister in law, Louise DeLucia; a cousin, George Manguilli as well as many other relatives and friends.

Roger Mel, 87, of 162 Rimmon Rd., Woodbridge, passed away June 19, 2008 in Brook Hollow Health Care Center, Wallingford. Born in Revine, Treviso, Veneto, Italy on Nov. 1, 1920, he was the son of the late Andrew J. & Vittoria Baron Mel. He came to this country in 1930. He worked as a special tools machinist for Yale University for many years until retirement in 1985. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was an avid golfer and a member of the Yale Golf Club. He is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Norine (Mickey) Cartoceti of Bethany & Clara Cappiello of Woodbridge; 2 nephews, Mel (Fran) Cartoceti & Frank (Roseann) Cappiello; 2 nieces, Judy (Bill) Kerin & Jackie Skehan; and 10 grand nieces & nephews.
