Caesar DeMartino, 87, of East Haven, died Sept. 7, 2009 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the husband of Bruna Marcosano DeMartino. Born in New Haven Aug. 20, 1922, he was the son of the late Caesar and Teresa Maresca DeMartino. Raised on Academy St. on Wooster Square, he was a long time New Haven resident before moving to East Haven. Caesar was a New Haven Police officer for many years, and, after his retirement, he worked at New Haven Savings Bank. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Rita (Morgan) O’Brien of Clinton, Roseanne (Ted) Karbowski of North Branford and Eleanor (Michael) Iannuzzi of East Haven; a sister, Eleanor Earl of Hamden; 6 grandchildren, Tanya (Vincent) Morrotti of East Haven, Morgan (Christy) O’Brien of Louisville, Colorado, T.J. (Kimberly) Karbowski and Stephen Karbowski, both of North Branford, Michael (Tiffany) Iannuzzi of Hartford and Jason O’Brien of Clinton; two great grandchildren, Gabriella Morrotti and Jacob Karbowski. He was predeceased by five brothers, Saverino, William, Ralph J., Fred P. and Arthur E. DeMartino and a sister, Emma Ferraro.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Michael’s Church Thursday, Sept 10th at 10:00 AM. Interment in All Saints Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to The CT. Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT. 06405

DAVIS, IRA
September 5, 2009
Ira Davis, 35, of 159 Clay St., New Haven, passed away Sept. 5, 2009 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford. Born in New Haven Nov. 18, 1973, she was the daughter of Paul Davis Sr. of New Haven and the late Johnny Mae Sanders Davis. Besides her father, Ira is survived by two sons, Dakota and Braden Davis, both of New Haven; two brothers, Paul Davis Jr. and Antonio Davis, both of New Haven; two sisters, Tamela Davis Bash of West Haven and Sandy M. Davis of New Haven; several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Graveside Service in Evergreen Cemetery, (Section 9) 769 Ella Grasso Blvd., New Haven Saturday Sept. 12th at 10:00 AM.

WILSON, RUTH I.
September 3, 2009
Ruth Isabel Herb Wilson, 90, passed away suddenly on Sept. 3, 2009. She was the widow of Courtland Seymour Wilson. She was born in New Haven May 17, 1919, the sixth of Sarah Freeman and Solomon Thomas Herb’s seven children. She lived for 89 of her 90 years at 266 Goffe Terrace where she and her husband raised their four children. Since April 2008, she resided at Seacrest Retirement Center, where she had wonderful friends. Ruth worked at Yale-New Haven Hospital in the Dept. of Surgical Pathology, at the Urban League, and at Albertus Magnus College. A staunch activist in the Civil Rights Movement, she was one of the organizers of the Black Women’s Boycott and, with Courtland, participated in the great work to end racism and promote equal opportunity for all people. Ruth was also a great lover of the arts, especially opera. She attended lectures on all kinds of subjects, with particular interest in African American and Native American history and culture. During her long life, she was a member of many organizations that ranged from The Girl Friends, to the NAACP, to the New Haven Arts Council. She is survived by one daughter, Ruthie (Craig) Gilmore of Los Angeles, CA.; three sons Courtland (Sarah Underwood) Wilson of Washington, D.C., J. Peter (Dianne) Cohan-Wilson and Jon (Jacqueline) Wilson, both of New Haven; one sister, Sarah Ogarita Hawley of San Rafael, CA.; 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dwight) New Haven Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM and are invited to attend funeral services in Battel Chapel at Yale, College & Elm St., Wednesday, Sept. 9th at 12 Noon. DE MUSIS, MATTHEW "BABE"
September 2, 2009
Matthew Charles “Babe” DeMusis, 79, of Harbour Village, Branford died peacefully Sept. 2, 2009 in his home surrounded by his family, losing his valiant battle with cancer. He was the husband of Ethel Vanacore Demusis. Born in New Haven Nov. 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Angelo Charles and Rose Magliaro DeMusis. He graduated from Admiral Billiard Academy in 1948 and went to work in the family business, Charlie’s Tire Repair. In 1953, he married his loving wife of 56 years, Ethel Vanacore. He entered the US Army, also in 1953, and served for several years, earning two service medals, before returning to the family business. He retired in 1991 and helped Ethel in her business, Lynn’s Deli in Branford until they both retired in 1995. He was a member of the Branford Elks Club. He enjoyed retirement, traveling with his wife and family, playing poker with his Friday night club, fishing, cooking, fine dining, and, most happily, spending many joyful moments with his family. He had a harmonious life and aged with perfection just like his favorite bottle of wine. Besides his wife, “Babe” is survived by three daughters, Roseann Pandolfi and Helen (Stephen) Borrelli, both of Branford and Lynn (Tim) DeMusis-Grady of North Branford; one brother, Anthony “Tony” DeMusis of Branford; one sister, Camille (Joseph) Paolillo of East Haven; a son in law, David Pandolfi; five grandchildren, Matthew (Gina) and Melissa Pandolfi, Nicholas and Maria Salatto, and Charles “Chuck” DeFilippo; many cousins, nieces and nephews, especially Peter, and a lifetime of friends. He was predeceased by his son, Charles “Charlie” DeMusis and a granddaughter, Nicole DeFilippo.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of his life at St. Mary’s Church, 731 Main St., Branford Saturday, Sept. 5th at 2:00 PM. followed by Military Honors. DOUGLAS, LENORE I.
August 22, 2009
Lenore I. Douglas, 77, of 245 Orange Ave., Milford, formerly of 1609 Chapel St., New Haven passed away Aug. 22, 2009 in Milford Hospital. Born in Lorain, Ohio on Aug. 6, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Pastor Mikola. She was a school teacher in Haines, Alaska and worked at the State Library in Juneau, Alaska before relocating to New Haven. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a secretary for the Judaic Studies Development Committee and was Graduate Registrar in the Comparative Literature Department at Yale University. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth M. Thomas of Tallahassee, FL.; a sister in law, Janet Mikola of Vermilion, Ohio; two nieces, three nephews and her dear friend and colleague, Mary Jane Stevens of New Haven. She was predeceased by a brother, John S. Mikola. The family would like to thank Veronica Tomasic, the staffs at Yale New Haven Hospital, West River Health Care Center and Milford Hospital for their care and compassion.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. Funeral service will follow with Rev. Ian Oliver, pastor of Battell Chapel officiating. Final interment will take place in Jones Point Cemetery, Haines, Alaska.

GOLDMAN, IRENE
August 16, 2009
Irene Jinetopulos Goldman, 88, formerly of Corbin Rd., Hamden passed away August 16, 2009 in the Jewish Home for the Aged after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Meyer Goldman. Mrs. Goldman was born in New Haven April 16, 1921 a daughter of the late John and Despina Balides Jinetopulos. After graduating from college she worked as a dental hygienist. She is survived by her brother Theodore Jinetopulos and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Goldman was predeceased by her brother Matthew Jinetopulos and sister Katherine Demetriou.
Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services Wednesday morning at 10:30 in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange. Interment in Beaverdale Memorial Park. GREEN, MARIE
August 16, 2009
Marie Elizabeth Gaetano Green, 69, of Orange, died Aug. 16, 2009. Born in New Haven Nov. 18, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Elizabeth Gaetano. Her parents were partners in Puritan Fire Fixtures of Milford and the Firelight Shop of Orange. A lifelong resident of Orange, Marie graduated from Endicott College and was employed by State Farm Insurance for over 20 years. She worked tirelessly for Yale’s Discovery to Cure Gala. Marie was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in 2001, and, initially was given 24 months to live. Through the help of Dr Thomas Rutherford of Yale New Haven Hospital, his staff, and the most unwavering positive attitude, she survived for seven and a half years and never complained once. Mother never gave up. Sitting with her the night before she passed, she said “Don’t worry, I’m going to beat this”. Her incredible attitude throughout her illness and the love of her family is what brought her so far. She leaves behind her son, Todd Green and his wife Jennifer of Bethany; two grandsons, Shay and Bayley; two nieces, Marcy Shea of Sutton, MA. and Tracy Knapp of Farmington, Maine; and a nephew, Michael Henderson of Boston. She was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Henderson of Madison, Maine. The family will receive friends at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Wednesday, Aug. 26th from 6 to 8 pm. A memorial service will take place at 7:45 pm. Interment will be private. Donations are encouraged, and should be made in the form of time spent with your children, grandchildren, family and friends. Carol Sue Grillo, 60, of Yale Ave., New Haven passed away suddenly at her home on August 14, 2009. She was born in New Haven September 7, 1948 a daughter of the late Joseph R. and Amelita DiLonardo Grillo. Carol worked for Warnaco Inc. and was a longtime communicant of St. Aedan’s Church. She is survived by her brother James Grillo and his wife Margaret of Madison.

TORELLO, MARY
August 11, 2009
Mary Torello, 90, formerly of Campbell Ave. West Haven passed away in Hamden August 11, 2009. A daughter of the late James and Jennie Maddelino Torello she was born in New Haven July 1, 1919. Miss Torello was employed by the A.C. Gilbert Co. for many years and then worked in the cafeteria for the Hospital of St. Raphael for 12 years until her retirement in 1987. She is survived by her sister Rose Cervero of North Haven. She was predeceased by her brothers Louis and Michael Torello and her sister Louise Torello. Also survived by her nieces and nephews; Mr. & Mrs. Al Cervero, Mrs. Janet Celotto, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Marsoli Jr., Mr. & Mrs. David Celotto and daughter Daniella, and Kimberly Celotto.

SASSO, LAWRENCE
August 6, 2009
Lawrence Sasso Sr., 92 of Orange, passed away Aug. 6, 2009 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary Cama Sasso. Born in New Haven April 21, 1917, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Judith Wild Sasso. He succeeded his father in owning and operating The Sasso Tile Co. which he did for many years until his retirement in 1979. He was an Orange resident for 53 years. During World War II, he served as a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific War Theater. He saw action in Papua, the East Indies, New Guinea and the Bismarch Archipelago, and was the recipient of several decorations and citations. Most recently, he was awarded the Connecticut War Times Service Medal. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Lawrence (Marie) Sasso Jr. and Peter M. (Susanne) Sasso, both of Orange; two daughters, Mary Beth Sasso-Laudano of Orange and Jodi Sasso- Totten and her husband, Decelle of Woodbridge; six grandchildren, Anthony Laudano, Lauren, Stephen, Patrick and Remy Sasso and Gabrielle Totten.

GRILLO, LUCIAN J.
July 30, 2009
Lucian J. Grillo, 91, formally of 15 Alfred St., New Haven died July 30, 2009 in Talmadge Park, East Haven. He was the husband of the late Philomena M. Acampora Grillo. Born in Winchester, CT. Jan. 2, 1918, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Lucitta Adorno Grillo. He worked as a mattress maker for nearly 40 years and later worked as a paint salesman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a devoted member of St. Bernadette’s Church. As a member of the Men’s Club, he served as an usher and volunteered his time and energy on countless committees, feeding the homeless monthly and working on the annual Church Carnival. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Holy Family Retreat League, making over 50 retreats at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford. He was also an avid roller skater, golfer and bowler. He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Grillo Trelewicz and her husband, Robert of North Haven, Bernice Grillo Monaco and her husband, Bob of New Haven; five grandchildren, Marc & Jeff Trelewicz, Nicole, Joseph & Melissa Monaco; and a great grandson, Brodie Trahan. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Grillo and three sisters, Grace Della Rocco, Natalie Gallagher and Josephine Falzone.
