CHESHIRE, CT; Mr. Henry Dzierzawski, 93, of Cheshire, Ct formerly of Chicago, died Sunday, December 9, 2007 at the Highlands Healthcare Center in Cheshire. He was the husband of Harriet (Tylinski) Dzierzawski who were married
May 18, 1940. Mr. Dzierzawski was born May 15, 1914 in Chicago, a son of the late Witalis and Theodozia Dzierzawski and has lived in Cheshire, CT. since 1987. He was educated in Chicago schools and was a Crew Planner at American Airlines for many years retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Cheshire. Besides his wife, he leaves his son, Dennis Dzierzawski of Alexandria, VA, his sister, Ruth VanNatta of Chicago and his grandsons, Darren and Kevin Dzierzawski. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11a.m. at the Otto V. Stransky & Son Funeral Home 5112 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday in Chicago from 9a.m. to 11a.m. at the funeral home. Calling hours will be held Friday in Cheshire, CT from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. DeSANDRE, LOUIS J.
Meriden: Joe DeSandre, beloved father, son, brother, friend and co-worker, died suddenly on 12/6/07 while on a business trip in Florida. Born in Meriden on 12/31/71, he is survived by his mother Pam Chambers and father Louis DeSandre Jr; son, Evan DeSandre; brothers Russell Rankin and Darrin Rankin; nephew Cody Rankin and niece Kaylee Rankin. Joes loving, caring and genuine personality was exemplified by countless friends, co-workers and acquaintances. A lifelong resident of Meriden, Joe graduated Maloney High School. He attended Mitchell and Lees McRae Colleges and graduated Georgia Southern University. All were attended on soccer scholarships. He started playing soccer at the age of five and shared his passion for soccer and children as an USSF coach. His undying determination and love of the sport allowed him to break many records throughout high school and college. He played professional soccer for the Wolves. Joe was constantly involved in many other sports including pool, BMX racing, golf, skiing and baseball. He was associated with the APA Pool League, BCA Pool League, Yale Billiards Monday Night League, Straight Pool League at Pool Table Magic and was Co-founder of Blufelt Pool League. His accomplishments included APA 9-Ball State Champ 2006 and BCA 8-Ball State Champ 2005. Joe recently revived his love of BMX bike racing with his son, Evan with the NBL of CT. Joe and Evan combined have won 18 trophies since July 2007. Joes hobbies included dancing, music, guitar, tennis and website design. Joes passion for life was demonstrated in everything that he did but his greatest passion and love in and of his life was his son Evan. Following professional soccer, his previous employers included Verizon Wireless, Director of TOR Internet Co., Co-Founder and owner of Goti Internet Service, various consulting assignments and CW Costello Associates. Joe was most recently employed by Peoples United Bank as Director of OE Technology. He was truly respected and admired by his team members, management and vendors. To show appreciation of the immense loyalty and dedication that Joe gave to Peoples United Bank, they have established a Trust Fund for his son Evan. OLIVA, MICHAEL F.
Michael F. Oliva, age 52, of Sunset Drive Derby, entered into rest Tuesday Dec. 11, 2007 in the Griffin Hospital Derby. Mike was born in Bridgeport on Dec. 28, 1954 beloved son of Frank and Mary Caravaggio Oliva of Derby and has been a life long Derby resident. He was a former employee of Casberry in Seymour. He enjoyed watching football and was an avid Miami Dolphin fan. He enjoyed nature walks by the Derby reservoir and was an avid fisherman. Mike also loved to write and wrote many articles for the Valley Gazette. He is the loving brother of Joseph Oliva of Derby, and Phyliss Greco and her husband Ed of Seymour. He is the cherished uncle of Jamie, Kristin, Frank, and Corey, and great uncle of Taylor. He also leaves a cousin Scott Joyce. Friends may greet the family on Friday from 4 to 7 PM in the Edward F. Clinton- Ronald Beach Hinckley, age 58, of Clinton, passed away December 11, 2007, surrounded by his family at his home. He is survived by his loving companion of seven years Sandra "Sarah" Lanoue. He was born in Westfield, MA on May 23, 1949 son of the late H. Bruce and Constance G. Hinckley. Ron was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the Navy on the U.S.S. Littlerock. He was employed for 25 years for Power Specialties in Ma, and for the last 7 years at Torrington Supply as Industrial Sales Manager. He is a member of the Westbrook American Legion and manager of their baseball team. Ron was very proud to be selected as a State Committee Member to the State of Connecticut American Legion Baseball Team. He was a devoted father, and grandfather. He will be sadly missed. Besides Sarah, he is survived by four children Kelly Michaud and her husband Mark of Cromwell, Timothy Hinckley and his wife Stacey of Southington, Alicia Gibson and her husband Jeffrey of Greenwich, and Sara Hinckley of Clinton. He is also survived by three sisters, Linda L. Dickerson of Missouri, Betsey A. Davis of IN., and Lauren B. Chistolini of MA. two brothers Bruce A. Hinckley, and David N. Hinckley both of MA. He also leaves behind four granddaughters Marley, Mallory, Kadley and Leah. NORWALK, CONN.: Craig N. Breny, lifelong resident of Norwalk, passed away Monday, December 10, 2007 in Norwalk Hospital, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was 78. Born in Norwalk on December 8, 1929, he was the son of the late Clesson E. and Jean M. Breny. A 1948 graduate of Norwalk High School, he was an active member of their alumni association and the Class of 1948 Reunion Committee. Craig was an engineer for the Southern New England Telephone Co., retiring in 1988 after nearly thirty-six years of service. He served our country during the Korean Conflict with the Army National Guard, 963rd Field Artillery Battalion, Headquarters Battery, 43rd Infantry Division. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion, Telephone Pioneers of America and the First Congregational Church of Norwalk. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, car racing, bird watching, coin and stamp collecting, and spending time with family. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Angie L. (Cenatempo) Breny; a son, John W. Breny and his wife, Alison M. Badolato of Newtown, CT; a daughter, Dr. Jean M. Breny Bontempi and her husband, Christopher D. Bontempi of Hamden, CT; several nieces and a nephew. He is predeceased by a sister, Byrle Breny (2006). Mr. Francis Frank J. Marchetti, age 89, of Milford, beloved husband of the late Barbara T. Marchetti, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 in Milford Hospital. Son of the late Joseph Marchetti and Regina Adrianna Marchetti, he was born on January 10, 1918 in Bridgeport. He was self employed as a mason contractor. Mr. Marchetti is survived by a son, Eugene Marchetti and his wife Eileen, a granddaughter, Kelly Marchetti Grasso and her husband Mark Grasso, all of Orange, and two sisters, Mary Orsini and Nancy DeRosa, both of Stratford. He was predeceased by three brothers, Albert, Peter, and Italo Marchetti and a sister, Esther Paola. CAVALLARO, TINA M.

Tina M. (Concetta) Fresa Cavallaro, 86, of Branford, passed away Sept. 30, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. She was the widow of George F. Cavallaro. Mrs. Cavallaro was born in Naples, Italy Feb. 13, 1923, daughter of the late Gennaro and Assunta Perrone Fresa. While growing up in Italy, she played professional volleyball, which enabled her to travel throughout Italy. She met her future husband while he was stationed in Italy with the U.S. Army during World War II. They married
in October of 1945 and she came to the United States in April 1946. She operated Cavallaro’s Market on Indian Neck Ave. in Branford (better known as “Tina’s) for 58 years until her retirement. Tina loved to sit by her pool with her seven grandchildren and one of her favorite pastimes was spending time at the casino. Holidays were special because everyone anticipated Tina’s delicious homemade lasagna. Everyone looked forward to gathering at “Nonnie’s” for Sunday dinner which was a family tradition. She is survived by one son, Carmine F. (Patricia) Cavallaro of Branford; one daughter, Georgette “Gigi” Mauro-Celentano of New Haven; a brother, Carmine (Marie) Fresa of Branford; three sisters, Theresa (George) Beermuender of Branford, Nunzia Cervone and Maria Cantore, both of Naples, Italy; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Also survived by sons in law, Michael J. "Nick" Pawlowicz and William C. Celentano Jr. She was predeceased by two daughters, Marianna R. Pawlowicz and Dora L. Gargamelli; and three brothers, Joseph, Vito and Anthony Fresa.

Anthony J. DiMeola, 82, of Fountain Terrace, New Haven, passed away Sept. 25, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. Born in New Haven July 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Raphaella DiMeola. He graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1945. He immediately entered the military and served in the Quartermaster Corps., U.S. Army of Occupation in the Pacific War Zone. He graduated from the University of New Haven School of Managerial Development in 1974. He worked in management for Berger Bros. Co for 37 years and later for Duckster Sportswear and Chevron Ties until his retirement. He was past president of the Industrial Engineering Society, a founder and past president of Berger Bros. Credit Union, a 35 year member of The Amity Club, serving on its Board of Directors and Scholarship Committee, a member of the New Haven Industrial Management Club, American Legion Post 162 in Hamden, the Italian American Historical Society and the Village Unity League. He is survived by two aunts, Yolanda (Helen) DiMeola of Hamden and Helen DiMeola of Tolland; and several cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Concetta DiMeola. Joseph J. Kempter, 70, of 607 Bradley St., East Haven, passed away at home Sept. 21, 2009. Born in New Haven Aug. 7, 1939, he was the son of the late Augustine A. and Margaret Coppola Kempter. He is survived by a brother, Louis A. Kempter and a sister, Ann (Walter) Swierad, both of East Haven; a nephew, Scott Swierad of Killingworth; a niece, Sandra Woodhouse of East Haven; and was the great uncle of Kristine Swierad of Killingworth, Margaret & Christopher Woodhouse, both of East Haven.

John L. Soterakos, 87, formerly of 100 York St., New Haven, passed away Sept. 20, 2009 in Brook Hollow Health Care Center, Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Elaine B. Sue Soterakos. Mr. Soterakos was born in New York City Sept. 14, 1922, son of the late Stavros and Politimi Soterakos. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific War Theater, and worked at First Bank in New Haven until his retirement. He was a member of the Order of AHEPA. He is survived by a sister, Eugenia Mitchell of Santa Rosa, CA. and two step grandchildren, Susan and David Partington of Florida Also survived by Celina and Jeffery Bazaar and their children, John and Kathryn. He was predeceased by a brother, Peter Soterakos and a sister, Mary Soterakos.

William Frederick Freeman Sr., 80, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 11, 2009. He was the loving and devoted husband of 61 years to Lessie Barham Freeman. Born in Norfolk, VA. Feb. 9, 1929, he was the son of the late Rev. Leon & Mable Freeman. He grew up in Norfolk receiving his education in the school system there, and as a young adult, moved his young family to New Haven 49 years ago. He retired from OLIN Corp. and from Southern Conn. State University. He was a wonderful and wise family man who loved to read. He had a great relationship with his grandchildren and has taught them many things, including how to build their own bicycles. They will always treasure the time they had with him. Besides his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory his children, Brenda Cochrane of San Diego, CA., Florene Spann & Rosetta Gattison, Damonne (Bill) Jones & Stephanie Freeman, all of New Haven and William F. (Lawanda) Freeman Jr. of Saginaw, Mich.; brothers, Melvin (Lee) Freeman of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Robert (Cora) Freeman of Norfolk, VA.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Freeman;19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by three brothers, Leon, Lawrence & Curtis Freeman; a sister, Jessie and a grandson, Samuel Spann.

Anthony M. “Sonny” Marchitto, 80 of 540 Dogwood Road, Orange, passed away Sept. 10, 2009 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Frances Maturo Marchitto. Mr. Marchitto was born in New Haven Oct. 10, 1928, son of the late Anthony A. and Carmela Vastola Marchitto. He was a self employed building contractor and developer, operating Mark Construction Co., and, later worked as the Building Inspector for the Town of Orange until his retirement. At one time, he was associated with National Lumber Co. in North Haven. A resident of Orange for over 55 years, he was an active member of the Men’s Club at Holy Infant Church. He was an avid sports enthusiast and dedicated to the development of youth sports programs in the Town of Orange, and was one of the founders of the Orange Little League. His devotion to his children and grandchildren led him to many hobbies such as model railroading, building miniature doll houses and unique bird houses, and keeping his yard as a park for his grandchildren to play in. He was also a gourmet cook. Besides his wife, he is survived by his devoted children, Carl V. (Estelle) Marchitto of Orange, Claudia (Paul) Kasperzyk of West Haven and Gina Esparo of Derby; his daughter in law, Colleen Marchitto of Columbia, CT, ; a brother, Ernest R. Marchitto of Milford; two sisters, Grace Anastasio of Bristol and Louise (Anthony) Buemi of North Haven. Also survived by 14 beloved grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Mark M. Marchitto.

Joseph M. Bontempo, 96, formerly of 339 Eastern St., New Haven and Four Rod Road, Hamden passed away Sept. 8, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary H. Piatkowski Bontempo. Mr. Bontempo was born in New Haven March 12, 1913, son of the late Angelo and Theresa Biondi Bontempo. He graduated from Connecticut College of Commerce in 1947. Prior to that, he served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force in Newfoundland during World War II. At one time, he worked as a district manager for Gerber Baby Foods. More recently, he served as business manager for the Church of the Ascension in Hamden, assisting the late Father John F.Cotter. He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Frank) Murphy of Hamden and Donna (Jeff) Coe of Park City, Utah; three grandchildren, Sean & Brian Murphy and Mary Ellen Gershkowitz; and four great grandchildren, Alex, Meghan, Shannon & Manya. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Bontempo and a sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Kelly. The family would like to acknowledge the care given by the staff at Hamden Health Care, especially Mavis Howellton.
