Joseph R. Grana

Joseph R. Grana, 80, of 18 Hawleyville Road, Bethel, husband of Dorothy (Dratch) Grana, died on Friday, October 3, 2003 at Danbury Hospital, shortly after his admission.
Mr. Grana was born in Danbury, March 24, 1923, a son of the late Paul and Virginia (Zarcone) Grana. He attended local schools; Danbury High School and Western Connecticut State University.
In years past, Mr. Grana was a painter by trade and later a machinist, retiring from Drake Engineering Company of Danbury.
A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Grana was a member of the American Legion Post of Bethel; the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge and of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, both of Danbury.
He was an avid duckpin bowler and enjoyed card playing.
Mr. and Mrs. Grana observed their 50th wedding anniversary on September 7 of this year.
In addition to his wife Dorothy, Mr. Grana is survived by two sons, Joseph P. Grana and his wife Sandy, of Danbury; and Stephen M. Grana, of Bartlesville, Okla.; a daughter, Virginia G. Zagaja and her husband Gregory, of Chicago; a sister, Josephine Keller, of White Plains, N.Y.; five grandchildren: Stephen Grana, Jr., Shawn Grana, Mia Zagaja, Erica Zagaja and Ciara Zagaja, and several nieces and nephews.
Four siblings, Mary Sluti, Christine Rush, Phillip Grana and John Grana, predeceased their brother Joe.
The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, at 10 a.m., in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 13 Pembroke Road, Danbury, with the Rev. Michael G. Popson, officiating. Burial will take place in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Panachida service will be conducted in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.

Goldie Rose Theresa Verrilli

Goldie Rose Theresa Verrilli, age 83 of Monroe, died October 4, 2003 in St. Joseph Manor, Trumbull, following a long illness. She was the beloved aunt of Janice Jacobs and her husband, William of Bethel, Michael Arata and his wife, Elaine of Milford, and Jean Jissonia and her husband, John of Maryland; great-nieces and nephews, Jacquelyn and Jonathan Jacobs; Nicole, Joshua and Joseph Arata; and Dawn Jissonia.
Born in Bridgeport on August 28, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William and Veronica Demi Uyzoni. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael R. Verrilli; as well as a brother, Henry Uyzoni and sisters, Margaret Schuster, Helen Jankura and Enica Arata. Mrs. Verrilli was a longtime resident of Bridgeport before moving to Monroe in 2001. She worked as the educational assistant to the director of evening divisions at Housatonic Community College, Bridgeport, for 20 years until retirement. Mrs. Verrilli enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Mahjongg Club of Monroe.
She will be sorely missed by the many friends she leaves behind.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at 9 a.m. from the Spadaccino Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Tpke. (Route 111), Monroe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Jude Church, 707 Monroe Tpke. (Route 111) at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Family and friends may call on Monday, October 6, 2003, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Anna Dickinson Campbell

Anna Dickinson Campbell of Bridgewater died Saturday, October 4, 2003, at the Candlewood Valley Health Center, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. She died one day after her 89th birthday. She was the widow of the late John H. Campbell.
Anna was born on October 3, 1914, at the family homestead on Town Line Rd., in Roxbury, daughter of William C. Dickinson and Mary H. Wagner. She attended Bridgewater Center School and New Milford High School. Anna was a direct descendant of Rev. Benjamin Ruggles, an early Bridgewater settler and Revolutionary War patriot. She resided on Hut Hill Rd., in Bridgewater for 65 years, and entered the Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center after suffering a stroke in August, 2002.
Anna and her husband founded a family business, John H. Campbell Services, next to their home in 1946, which still thrives after 57 years. It started as an automotive repair garage and later expanded to include an Allis Chalmers farm and industrial equipment dealership, and several brands of lawn and garden equipment. Since John’s death in 1982, their son Richard A. Campbell has continued the business as Campbell Services. Anna was the bookkeeper and secretary for 56 years.
Anna was a charter member of the Women’s Auxiliary, of the Bridgewater Fire Department. She was also a member of the Roger Sherman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Bridgewater Historical Society, and a member of the Palm Rebekah Lodge, #43, 100F, in New Milford.
Anna is survived by three children; Dorothy H. Fitch and Richard A. Campbell, of Bridgewater; and Robert J. Campbell, of Newtown; two sisters; Hazel Pitcher, of Bridgewater; and Louise Greene, of Middlebury; eight grandchildren; Scott Fitch, of Bridgewater; Colin Campbell, of New Milford; Deborah Garthwait, Meg Reilly, and Robert B. Campbell, of Newtown; Sheryl O’Marra and Brenda Schlosser, of Bethel; and Brian Fitch, of South Windsor; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by another grandson, Craig Fitch.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at noon, at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Burial will follow at Center Cemetery, Roxbury.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, after 11 a.m., until the service

Walter “Lance” Whitlock

Walter “Lance” Whitlock, 80, of 19 Main Street, Danbury, died at the Harborside/Glen Hill Nursing Home on Friday, following a brief illness.
He was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, August 29, 1922, son of the late Frederick J.L. and Letitia (Scammel) Whitlock. “Lance” was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Canadian Army, Carlton-York Regiment. He was a carpenter by trade, and had lived in Naples, Maine for many years He had been a Danbury resident for the past two years.
“Lance” is survived by a brother, Fred L. Whitlock and his wife, Lorraine of Danbury; 4 sisters: Ferne Adams of Naples, ME; Peggy Saunders of New Brunswick, Canada; Anita Whitlock of Holtsville, NY; Dorothy Stanzione of Manassas, VA; as well as several loving nieces and nephews.
Cremation will take place at the direction of the family and a Memorial Service will be held in Naples, ME.
Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.
Gary J. Smith

Gary J. Smith, 46, of Danbury, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, August 7, 2003.
Gary was born in Port Chester, NY March 9, 1957, son of Joan (Keck) Smith of Danbury and the late Ralph Smith. He attended Danbury schools and was an avid sports fan and a great pool player. He was the owner of Gary’s Video Store in Danbury.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his brothers, Ralph and Glenn Smith of Danbury; a sister, Deborah DeSantis of Ft. Meyers, FL; and an aunt, several uncles, two nieces and a nephew.
A graveside service will be held at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, on Wednesday afternoon at 1:15 p.m.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Emily M. Reichman

Emily M. Reichman of Danbury, wife of the late Dr. Joseph A. Reichman, died at the Hancock Hall Nursing Home in Danbury on Friday, August 8, 2003.
She was born in Tremont, PA, daughter of the late Francis and Frances (Michael) Maurer. She had lived in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area most of her life, prior to moving to Danbury in 1992.
Emily is survived by her daughter, Anne Reichman of Danbury; two granddaughters: Christine Eppinger and her husband, Steven of Roswell, GA and Karen Norkowski and her husband, Charles of Oceanside, CA; two great-grandchildren: Trevor Norkowski and Brett Eppinger and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury, on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m.. Entombment will take place in the Mausoleum at St. Mary Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, today (Sunday) from 4 to 7 p.m.

Dorothy Jean Lewis

Dorothy Jean Lewis, age 71, wife of the late John Gordon Lewis of Lake George Road, Newtown, died at the Danbury Hospital Thursday, August 7, 2003. She was born in New York City June 22, 1932, daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Belle Nicoll. She has been a resident of Newtown for over 40 years.
She is a graduate of Columbia University with a B.S. degree and from Yale University with an M.P.H. degree.
She was a professor of Dental Hygiene at Bridgeport University, retiring in 1985. In 1987 she joined the faculty at Tunxis Community College in Farmington. While at Tunxis Community College, she served on many community programs affecting dental care for underprivileged children in the Plymouth, Hartford and New Britain school systems.
She was a participant in the writing of the first health plan for the City of Danbury. a joint effort between Danbury and Yale University School of Public Health. She was also co-author of a Health Manpower Development Grant to Danbury Hospital, which in 1979 allowed for the establishment of General Practice Dental Residency and opening the Dental Clinic.
She was a member of the Governor’s Task Force on School Heath and a member of the School-based Dental Health Service Advisory Board in Danbury. Jean was active in the Connecticut Dental Hygiene Association.
Throughout her professional life, Jean believed deeply in the public benefit to be had by greatly expanding the role of dental auxiliaries, such as assistants, hygienists and school dental nurses.
Jean is survived by a daughter, Kateri (Kitty) G. Lewis of Newtown.
A memorial service will be at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown on Friday, August 22, 2003 at 1 p.m.

Sophie V. Benedict

Sophie V. Benedict, 82, of Anderson Road, Kent, formerly of Danbury, wife of the late George B. Benedict Sr. died peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 9, 2003.
Sophie was born in Ipswich, MA, February 2, 1921, daughter of the late Michael and Verenicka (Skwarcanna) Samko. She attended schools in Poland and came to the United States as a teenager. She had been co-owner of the former Dependable Refuse Company of Danbury, along with her late husband and more recently worked for Zeppa Studios in Kent. She served as a volunteer at The Kent Nutritional Center, where she was the recipient of many volunteer awards. Sophie greatly enjoyed crocheting, cooking, canning, gardening, playing Bingo and the company of her family and friends. She was also a longtime member of St. James Church, Danbury.
Funeral services will be held at graveside, in section 23, of Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m.
Sophie is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Sartwell; and two sons, George Benedict Jr. and Francis Benedict, all of Kent; as well as six grandchildren, Tammy Reardon, Lori Sartwell, John Benedict, Sandra Benedict, Robin Benedict and Leslie Benedict; and a great-grandson, Tyler Sartwell.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Monday evening from 5 00 to 8 00 p.m. and Tuesday morning from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon.

Diana Allan

Diana Allan of Waterbury, passed away on Thursday August 7, 2003 in the company of family and friends. She was born August 26, 1941 in Lodi, OH, daughter of Arlene C. Fetzer and the late Willard B. Cowling.
A graduate of Medina High School, Diana went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Capital University in Columbus, OH and a Master’s in Hospital Policy and Management from New York Medical College. She used her talents in various positions at Medina Community Hospital and St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, CA while she worked to obtain her State of California Teaching Credential in 1978. Throughout her career, Diana focused on giving patients the best care possible. During her 20 years of service at Danbury Hospital, she excelled in numerous nursing leadership and management roles. A member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honors Society, she founded the state recognized parish nurse program at Danbury Hospital, taught basic life support for the American Heart Association, and devoted her time to the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Connecticut Hospital Association, and the American Diabetes Association. She remained active in the Woodbury United Methodist Church and served as church treasurer and chair of the staff parish relations committee while also a participant in the United Methodist Woman’s Group.
Diana took deserved pride in her life as a wonderful daughter, mother, and grandmother. She will be fondly remembered for her courage, generosity, warmth, sense of purpose, and love for other people.
She is survived by her mother; her sons, Andrew Todd Dudas of Waterbury and Brad Dudas of Danbury; Brad’s wife Lynn of Danbury; her precious granddaughter, Natalie Dudas; her special friend and loving companion, John Dvorsky of Bethlehem; two aunts, Louise Cowling and Martha Schurhammer of Ohio; stepfather, John Fetzer of Medina, OH; and stepdaughter, Patti Paquette of Concord, NC. She was predeceased by her father; her son, Trent Dudas; and her husband, Robert Allan. Sherman Rowley Slaving

Sherman Rowley Slaving, age 48, a resident of Evergreen Lane, Woodford, Vt., died on Thursday evening, Aug. 7, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness.
He was born in Hartford on May 6, 1955, and was the son of the late Frank Slaving and Eleanor Tillman Fairclough, who survives. Mr. Slaving received his education in Bethel and served with the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was a nine-year member of the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a lieutenant. He also was a certified emergency medical technician in Connecticut. Through the 1970s and 1980s, he continued his firefighting in Adams, Mass. He has previously resided in Great Barrington, Canaan, and Stockbridge, all in Massachusetts. Mr. Slaving was a freelance writer for the Berkshire Record and the North Adams Transcript, in the 1990s.
He has received a thespian award for a play he wrote during the 1990s. He enjoyed writing, painting, and traveling the flea market circuit. Most recently, he was a parts manager at Pete’s Chrysler in Pittsfield, Mass.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Everett Fairclough of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; his wife, Barbara Jean (Lampiasi) Slaving of Woodford; his sons, Daniel Slaving of Hope Air Force Base N.C., Leigh Maher of New York City, Adam Marauszwski of Pittsfield, and Cole Marauszwski, Pittsfield; and his daughters, Kimberly Slaving of Pittsfield, Michelle Maher of Boston, Deni Marauszwski of Pittsfield, and Erin Marauszwski of Pittsfield. He also has six grandchildren. He is predeceased by his father, Frank Slaving.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday evening, Aug. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St. in Bennington.
Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. Mary Rose Kaufman

Mary Rose Kaufman, age 76, of Newtown, wife of the late Dale E. Kaufman, professor of Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University, who predeceased her in 1975, died peacefully Thursday, August 7, 2003 in Bradley Memorial Hospital, Southington.
She was born in Maplewood, MO April 11, 1927, daughter of the late Charles and Mae Ella (Saidon) Mullin. A former resident of Manhattan, MO, she was a resident of St. Joseph’s Heritage House for 19 years in Danbury. She volunteered for hundreds of hours at Danbury Hospital and happily participated the Cell Mates Skittle Band and Chorus at the Danbury Senior Center.
For the past 8 years Mrs. Kaufman has resided at the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, Plantsville. While there she was given the honorary title of Assistant to the Director of Recreation. Mary Rose considered herself an artist. Her paintings were displayed at a one woman art show at ARC, and were included in a traveling art show by residents of the home. Her oil painting “Sunflower” is on display at ARC at this time.
Mary Rose will be missed by her family, including 2 brothers, Charles and his wife Margaret Mullin of Eureka, MO, William and his wife Sandra Mullin of Amherst, MA; one sister, Jean Smith of Newtown; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery. Contributions may be made to ARC, 1261 North Main St., Plantsville, CT 06479.

John M. Clune III

John M. Clune III, 68 of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of Danbury, died on Monday, August 4, 2003 at Bethesda Memorial Hospital, Boynton Beach.
He was the husband of Joan (Quigley) Clune.
Mr. Clune was born January 31, 1935 to John M., II and Grace (Hatfield) Clune in Peekskill, NY, where he was raised and he attended Peekskill schools.
A peacetime US Army veteran, Mr. Clune was a retired railroad engineer with Metro North retiring in 2000 after 44 years of service.
A resident of Florida for the past 2 years, he was a Danbury resident for 35 years coming from Peekskill.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #120 and of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, both of Danbury.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, a son, US Army 1st Sgt. John Clune of the United States Military Academy at West Point; a daughter, Mary Ellen Pritchard of Bethel; four sisters, Marie Birdas, Janet Fanzo and her husband Vincent, Marjorie Strang and Frances Myer and her husband George all of Peekskill; two granddaughters, Jennifer Pritchard and Stefanie Pritchard as well as several nieces and nephews survive.
A daughter, JoAnn Clune predeceased her father.
