Marie DeMennato Mazzacane, 92, of 2802 Victoria Way, Coconut Creek, FL., formerly of New Haven died July 4, 2010 at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale after a brief illness. She was the widow of Michael J. Mazzacane. Mrs. Mazzacane was born in New Haven Aug. 20, 1917, daughter of the late Pasquale & Theresa Maturo DeMennato. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a Registered Nurse at both St. Raphael’s and Yale New Haven Hospitals. She is survived by her son, Michael P. Mazzacane of Coconut Creek, FL.; her daughter, Joanne (Charles) Scalesse of Branford; 2 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Louis and C. Paul DeMennato. Funeral from The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday, July 11th at 11:30. Mass in St. Brendan’s Church at 12 Noon. Louise Perry Gray, 64, of 213 Ashmun St., New Haven died July 3, 2010 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. She was the former wife of James Gray. Mrs. Gray was born in New Haven April 3, 1946, daughter of the late Richard Carter and Eleanor Edwards. She was a cafeteria attendant and a volunteer at Winchester School for several years. She is survived by two sons, Kevin Gray of New Haven and Taveras Gray of Atlanta, GA.; four daughters, Bernadette Perry, Gloria, Diane and Crystal Gray, all of New Haven; two sisters, Kathryn Thomas of New Haven and DeEtta Mouning; a brother, Clinton Wright; one nephew; 26 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jacqueline Gray. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Martin dePorres Church, Dixwell & Webster, Thursday morning at 10:30. Friends may call at the church prior to the Mass from 9:00 to 10:30. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven.

Gregor A. Mulqueen Onofrio, 34, of 46 Briarwood Lane, Branford passed away at his home on July 1, 2010. Born in New Haven April 7, 1976, he was the son of Emily Carol and Pat “Dorn” Onofrio of Branford. He formerly worked as an organic farmer in Colorado. Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Gary Onofrio and a sister, Linda (Bob) Brown, both of Hamden; uncles, Louis (Maureen) Onofrio, Anthony (Dolores) Onofrio, Robert (Marty) Onofrio, William (Laurie) Onofrio, Jamie Onofrio, William (Carol) Mulqueen & Richard (Corinne) Mulqueen; aunts, Roberta (Edward) Storr, Mary Ann ( Chris) Bartlotta, Elizabeth (Alex) Torello, Jane (Dennis) Reilly & Maureen (Nick) Bencivengo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two uncles, Charles and John Mulqueen.

Mary Pignataro Abt, 83, of Spring Valley Road, Woodbridge, passed away June 25, 2010 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Deputy Chief Paul V. Abt, NHFD (ret.) Mrs. Abt was born in New Haven July 4, 1926, daughter of the late Gregorio “Jerry” and Lena Testa Pignataro. She attended St. Mary of the Springs College in Ohio and graduated from Annhurst College in South Woodstock, CT. She earned her Master’s Degree and Sixth Year Certificate at So. Conn. State University. She was an elementary school teacher in the New Haven Schools System, teaching at Winchester and Davis St. Schools. Prior to that, she taught at St. Aedan’s School and was a member of St. Aedan’s Ladies Eucharistic League. She will be remembered for how much she loved her family and how much they loved her. She is survived by one son, Gregory D. (Corinne) Abt of Coto DeCaza, CA.; two daughters, Mary Ellen (William Degen) McDonald of Niceville, FL. and Judy (Paul) Iannone of Cheshire; a brother, Donald M. Pignataro of Woodbridge and four grandchildren, William Campion, Paul Iannone, Brittany & Kelly Abt.

Viola Gilchrist Blue, 91, of 168 Thompson St., New Haven passed away June 24, 2010 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. She was the widow of Hosea Blue. Mrs. Blue was born in Maxton, North Carolina July 10, 1918. She is survived by four sons, Eddie (Ella) Blue and Dannie (Audrey) Blue, both of New Haven, Jerome (Larita) Blue of Freeport, N.Y. and Devern Patterson in North Carolina; a brother, James McLean of Rowland, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Ellison of New Haven, Rosetta Paris of Hamden and Lillibell McLean in North Carolina; her aunt, Julia Fairfax; 18 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by four sons, James, Matthew, Bobby and Hosea Blue Jr. and a brother, Danny Gilchrist. Also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held in St. Matthew’s Unison Free Will Baptist Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven Tuesday, June 29th at 11:00 AM. Friends may call prior to the service from 9:00 to 11:00. Philomena Rose Piscitelli–Caprio, 77, entered the house of the father on June 18, 2010 after a brief illness. A long-time resident of Branford, Philomena was born in New Haven on June 22, 1933 to the late Antonio and Margaret Piscitelli. Philomena (Phyllis) was the wife of the late Joseph A. Caprio who predeceased her in 1986 after 31 years of marriage. Philomena touched the hearts of many and was an inspiration to all those who knew her, especially to her children; Anthony J. Caprio of New Haven and Susan Caprio–Saren of Milford, CT. A graduate of James Hill House High School in New Haven, she enjoyed her career in administration for the department of Neurology at The Hospital of Saint. Raphael. Mrs. Caprio was an active member of the Lions Club in Branford and the National Federation of the Blind where she initiated and taught brail on computers to blind students. In the 70’s and mid to late 80’s, Mrs. Caprio was an avid advocate for the rights of the blind and disabled persons in the State of Connecticut. In addition to her work for the blind, Mrs. Caprio held a position in the 80’s to mid 90’s for Sarah, Inc in Guilford. Philomena’s strong faith was expressed both at home and within the parish community of Saint Elizabeth and Saint Mary’s Church; both in Branford.
On Friday, June 25, family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Philomena at the Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm Street, New Haven from 8-10 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will then follow in Saint Michael’s Church, 29 Wooster Place, New Haven at 10:30. She will proceed for final rest in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Arthur T. Barbieri Jr., 50, died peacefully May 30, 2010 in Yale New Haven Hosp. after a brief illness. He made his home in Old Saybrook with the love of his life, his wife Karin Barbieri, and their dog Rocco. Mr. Barbieri was born Dec. 31, 1959 and was the son of the late Arthur T. and Marion Cavallaro Barbieri. He was the father of Arthur T. Barbieri III and Anthony N. Barbieri, and the stepfather of Jeremy and Meredith Sanborn. Besides his wife and children he is survived by his sister, Nancy (William) McCormick of Branford; and his 3 grandchildren, Zoe Drew, Madison, and Morgan Sanborn.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass in St. Therese Church, 82 Thimble Island Rd. Branford Thursday at 10:00 AM. Joseph Vanacore, 84, of 315 Eastern St., New Haven passed away May 20, 2010 in the VA Hospital, West Haven after a long illness. He was the loving husband of Eesun Ahn Vanacore. Mr. Vanacore was born in New Haven Feb. 11, 1926 a son of the late Joseph and Anna Celentano Vanacore. He was a real estate agent for many years and was an Army veteran of WWII. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Vanacore and sisters Teresa Vanacore and Anna Crisco.

Magdalena Vazquez, 52, of 311 Eastern St., New Haven died suddenly in her home on May 18, 2010. She was the wife of Israel Vazquez and mother of the late Angel Vazquez. Mrs. Vazquez was born in Puerto Rico on April 6, 1958 a daughter of Jose Ramos and Gloria Vargas. She worked as a nurse’s aid at Skyview Nursing Home until her retirement. Mrs. Vazquez was the sister of Maria Ingrassia, Julio Crespo, Humberto Ramos, Zoraida Santana, Altagracia Mieles, and the late Edwin Deida, and Luis Figueroa. She was the Godmother of Alexandra Santana. Also survived by 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Vincent P. Ricca, 83, of New Haven, passed away May 10, 2010 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the devoted husband for 63 years of Carmela DiNicola Ricca. Mr. Ricca was born in New Haven Jan. 2, 1927, son of the late Joseph and Carmela Puglia Ricca. He was a maintenance engineer for the Orange School System for 42 years before retirement. At one time, he co-owned and operated a Gulf Service Station on Union Avenue in New Haven near the Railroad Station. He enjoyed frequent trips to the casino. Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved children, Linda Ricca of New Haven, Kathleen (Joseph) Festa of Milford, JoAnne Boyle of East Haven and Vincent (Pixie) Ricca Jr. of Branford; 6 loving grandchildren, Kimberly Iacovetti, Lisa Boyle, Jody McElligott, Kristen Festa, Michael & Vincent Ricca; 5 cherished great grandchildren, Jacob, Jillian Glenn, Alexa & Charles Joseph; and several special nieces & nephews. Alice Catherine Kaam March, 84, of Coconut Creek, FL. died at her home May 10, 2010. She was the widow of Retired Major George March. Mrs. March was born in Cairo, Egypt on July 24, 1925. She was the eighth of nine children born to the late Theodore and Marie Kaam. Mrs. March spoke seven languages and formerly worked as an international operator for the telephone company. She is survived by two daughters, Constance C. March of Coconut Creek, FL., with whom she resided and Marie (Donald) Campbell of Hamden; and two grandchildren, Christina and Catherine. She was predeceased by her eight brothers and sisters. Friends are invited to attend funeral services in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange Tuesday, May 18th at 10:30.
