KEARNS, BURTSELL J., ESQ.
Burtsell J. Kearns, Esq., age 78 of Trumbull and Hutchinson Island, FL, died after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family. He will always be remembered for his love and dedication to his faith, family and many friends. A die hard Yankees fan, he was born in the Bronx, NY, on November 3, 1929 to the late Burtsell and Virginia Webb Kearns. He was the devoted husband of 52 years to Anne Gambalesta Kearns, with whom they enjoyed many pleasures in life together especially their family, tennis and world-wide traveling. He attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine in the Bronx and was a proud and loyal graduate of Fordham Prep, Class of 1947. Burt then graduated from Fordham University with a B.S. in Chemistry, and received a Doctorate of Law from Fordham University Law School. He was also a graduate of the University of Bridgeport with a degree in Civil Engineering. A U.S. Army veteran, First Lieutenant, he proudly served his country in the Korean War. He had a long career in Corporate Law that afforded him the opportunity to travel the world. He was a Patent Attorney with Remington Rand, Bridgeport, Dorr Oliver, Stamford, and retired in 1996 with the Burndy Corporation, Stamford, as their Chief International Patent Counsel. He was a long time parishioner of St. Theresa Church, Trumbull, where he was a former Usher, the Canoe Brook Lake Association, Trumbull, and the Gaelic American Club of Fairfield. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Virginia Kearns OConnell and Florence K. Cavanaugh. In addition to his wife, Anne, he is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren whom he cherished greatly; son Burt F. Kearns and his wife Allison Holloway and their children Sam and Sally of Pacific Palisades, CA; daughter Anne Kearns-Fers of Trumbull, and her children Erin Fers of Wallingford and Robert S. Fers, Jr. of Trumbull, son Richard J. Kearns and his sons Richard and Andrew and daughter Kathleen Kearns-Donahue and her husband Timothy M. Donahue and their children, Ryan Virginia and Brenna of Trumbull. He is also survived by his future son-in-law, Robert J. Blain of Trumbull, as well as several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. His Irish wit and smile will be sorely missed by many. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00am directly in St. Theresa Church, Trumbull, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with full military honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call Monday 4-8pm in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.

SIMOS, MARIA
October 24, 2009
Maria Georgio Simos, 85, of Guilford, formerly of Washington Ave., West Haven, entered into eternal rest Oct. 24, 2009. She was the widow of George P. Simos. Mrs. Simos was born Jan. 28, 1924 in Ampelikon, Greece, daughter of the late Stelios & Pelagia Berberis. She came to this country in 1968 and worked as a machine operator for The Harloc Corp. for 20 years prior to her retirement. She is survived by a son, Peter (Barbara) Simos of Guilford; grandchildren Nicholas & Marissa Simos; a sister, Arhondoula in Greece; and many nieces & nephews, both here and in Greece. She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

MALTESE, MARY A.

Mary Ardolino Maltese, 96, of West Haven passed away Oct. 22, 2009 in Milford Health Care. She was the widow of Angelo Maltese. Mrs. Maltese was born in New Haven May 11, 1913, daughter of the late Gavino and Filomena Maturo Ardolino. Mary worked for more than 20 years at the Snack Shop at the University of New Haven. She had fond memories of UNH. Prior to that, she worked at Berger Bros. As a younger woman, Mary enjoyed cooking, sewing, singing and dancing. She enjoyed staying up late, feeding the local entertainers. She is survived by a devoted daughter, Mary Ann Maltese-Muzyka of West Haven; a dear friend, Joseph Campagna Jr. and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Leo, Charles & Anthony Ardolino and sisters, Evelyn Gould, Florence Panza, Philomena “Fannie” Panza, Julia Fusco, Margaret Adamo & Louise Romano. The family would like to extend special thanks to the Staff at Milford Health Care and CT. Hospice in Branford for their loving care.

Mary Mazzacane Farace, 77, of 87 Kenneth Circle, Guilford, passed away Oct. 19, 2009 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury. She was the widow of Vincent (Jimmy) Farace. Mrs. Farace was born in New Haven Dec. 14, 1931, daughter of the late Ralph and Helen Anderson Mazzacane. Mary enjoyed playing cards, Mah-jong, painting, reading, gardening, roller skating and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Thomas (Lynda) Farace and a daughter, Debra DaCunto, both of Guilford; two brothers, James Mazzacane of New Haven and Ralph “Way-Way” (Angela) Mazzacane of West Haven; three sisters, Betty (Joseph) Azevedo in Georgia, Janet (Fred) Goglia and Marlene (Anthony) Cavo, both of New Haven; four grandchildren, Thomas Farace Jr., Tricia Ginnetti, Jennifer Gervais & James DaCunto; and two great grandchildren, Taylor & Hailey. She was predeceased by two sisters, Dolores Boukis & Lorraine Perolla.

SANCHEZ, JUAN R.

Juan R. Sanchez, 59, of 165 Wolcott St., New Haven passed away Oct. 19, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Ana Ortiz Sanchez. Mr. Sanchez was born in Lares, P.R. Sept. 29, 1950, son of the late Ramon Alvelo and Maria Feliciano Alvelo. He was employed by O.F. Mossberg Co. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Raymond Sanchez of New Haven; a daughter, Ivette Torres of Hamden; a brother, Joaquin Sanchez of New Hampshire; two sisters, Carmen Perez of Shelton and Luz E. Sanchez Feliciano in Puerto Rico.

Eva Valanzuolo Saverese, 92, of 758 West Camino Real, Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of Nicoll St., New Haven, passed away Oct. 15, 2009. She was the widow of Frederick Saverese. Mrs. Saverese was born in New Haven Aug. 12, 1917, daughter of the late Vincenzo and Maria Minetti Valanzuolo. Prior to her retirement, she worked in the Housekeeping Dept. for SNET. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Saverese in California and Dolores Saverese of Boca Raton, FL. with whom she resided; three sons, Henry Saverese of Boca Raton, Vincent “James” (Madeline) Saverese of Orange and John (Linda) Saverese of Branford; two brothers, Ralph Valanzuolo of New Haven and Adolph Valanzuolo of Hamden; and two grandchildren, Lisa & John Saverese Jr. She was predeceased by a son, Frederick “Buddy” Saverese Jr.; a brother, George Valanzuolo; and two sisters, Catherine Iannucci and Elizabeth “Betty” Ciccarelli.

Alberta Carbone Cain, 71, of 9 Edgemere Road, East Haven, passed away Oct. 14, 2009 in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family as she took her journey to heaven. She was the wife of Jacob Cain. Mrs. Cain was born in New Haven June 10, 1938, daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Reopell Carbone. She was a sales representative at Sears in Orange for 25 years prior to her retirement. Alberta loved her family more than anything. We were truly blessed to have such a loving mother and grandmother. She adored her children and grandchildren generously and abundantly to her last day. She taught her grandchildren the meaning of a strong family and was the rock upon whom her family depended. She taught her grandchildren how to bake and knit and truly was their world. Holidays were so very special to her and she always made them perfect. Our traditional Italian Christmas Eve will never be the same. She had special friends that she was truly blessed to have. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Anthony W. (Susan) Cain and Frank (Patricia) Cain, both of East Haven; three daughters, Tammie (Robert) Kelsey of North Branford, Tressine (Thomas) Sobolewski & Francine (David) Haddad, both of Branford; step children, Mark Cain and Shirley (Guy) Tolomeo, both of Philadelphia; a brother, Francis (Gale) Carbone and a sister, Elizabeth (Harry) Cain, both of East Haven; 21 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; and nieces & nephews. Anne Pappas Marnel, 79, formerly of New Haven, passed away Oct. 12, 2009 after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Mino G. Marnel. Mrs Marnel was born in New Haven Nov. 23, 1929, daughter of the late Seraphim “Sam” and Despina Loukides Pappas. She worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of Dennis & North for 20 years, and was also associated with the family business, Prideful Laundry for many years. She served as secretary for the Connecticut Campaign Against Cooley’s Anemia, Inc.; taught Sunday School at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church and was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She is survived by a son, Constantine “Gus” (Barbara) Marnel of Milford; four daughters, Christine (Gerald) Baldino of Northford, Marcia (Brian) Arndt of Southington, Debbie (Chas) Esposito of Orange and Alexandra (Alexander) Heonis of Old Saybrook; 8 grandchildren, Erin, Kim, Gerald, Daniel, Christopher, Andrew, Anastasia & Arianna; and 2 great grandchildren, Michael & Eleni.

Ryan Oneal Tillman, 38, of 53 Alling St, West Haven, died suddenly Oct. 5, 2009. Born in Troy, N.C. Oct. 8, 1970, he was the son of Gertrude Jones of Lawrenceville, GA. & the late Vernon L. Tillman. He graduated from West Haven High School and worked for Clean-O-Matic in West Haven.He was employed as a carpenter by the Carpenter's Union, Local 24.Ryan will be missed by all who knew him for his charming wit, easy going personality, humor and his strong will to be a true fighter in whatever he believed in. Besides his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Ryan Whitley of New Haven; a brother, Vernon R. (Jacynda)Tillman of Lawrenceville, GA.; his step father, Kevin E. Jones of GA.; a sister, Natalie L. Jones-Wyatt (Mark Wyatt) of Duluth, GA.;and a grandson, Ryan Whitley-Barnett of New Haven. Joseph V. Morgillo, 79, of 1130 Whalley Ave., New Haven passed away Oct. 3, 2009 in Grimes/St. Regis Health Care Center. Born in New Haven Aug. 26, 1930, he was the son of the late Luigi and Maria Rose DellaSelva Morgillo. He was co-founder and treasurer of Morgillo Bros. Florist. He was a member of Fr. Regan Council 3300 in East Haven and John Barry Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus. He is survived by a brother, Albert Morgillo of New Haven; two nephews, Alfonso (Kimberly) Morgillo of Niantic and Louis (Janet Myers) Morgillo III of Salem; three nieces, Patricia (William) Giordano in Florida, Paula (Arnold) Gonzalez of New London and Leslie (Gary) Jones of Niantic; four great nephews, William, Andrew, Tyler & Alexander; three great nieces, Jamie, Teri & Rene. He was predeceased by five brothers, Michael, Ralph, Louis Jr., Pellegrino (Billy) and Michael Morgillo; and two sisters, Theresa and Theresa Morgillo.

CHAPMAN, MARY
Mary Chapman (nee Polverari or Paul) died peacefully in her home at Laguna Woods on October 15, 2007. She was 88 years old. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Eldon Chapman, and her loving daughters Karen Chapman and Celia Chapman, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters. She was born August 5, 1919, in Branford, Connecticut, to the late Vincenzo and Rosa Belluchetti Polverari. She moved to California in 1944 and had been a resident of Laguna Woods for over 21 years. As a young woman she enjoyed writing and schooling, and she passed these interests on to both her daughters. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.

KAYE, ROSALYN WITKIN
Rosalyn Witkin Kaye, 87, formerly of 18 Tower Lane, New Haven, devoted wife of the Late Maurice "Cubby" Kaye, died at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007. Born in New Haven, Aug. 22, 1920 she was the daughter of the Late Jacob & Anne (Chatzek) Witkin. Beloved Mother of Elizabeth (Dr. Alan) Reznik of Woodbridge, the Late Judith & David Kaye. Cherished & Loving Grandmother of Samuel, Michele, & Jane Reznik. Sister of Shirley Plotnick of Hamden. Rosalyn was active in many aspects of synagogue life at Cong Bnai Jacob during her life-long membership there; she was a past member of the Board of Directors, Past-Pres. of the Sisterhood, Past-Chairperson of the Archive committee, and recipient of the synagogues highest honor, the Shem Tov Award and a Presidential Citation.. She was also a selfless and dedicated volunteer at the New Haven Jewish Home for the Aged, Tres. of its Auxiliary, and a recipient of the Jewish Homes Service Award. She was also on the Board of Directors at Tower One/Tower East. Funeral Services at Cong. TRAMONTANO, LORRAINE
Lorraine Carrolla Tramontano, 70, of 55 Sentinel Hill Road, North Haven, passed away Friday, December 7, 2007, at St. Raphael's Hospital. She was the wife of Arthur "Art" Tramontano. Born in New Haven on April 20, 1937; daughter of the late Salvatore and Concetta Mangino Carrolla. Mother of Laura and Lynne Tramontano, both of North Haven. Sister of Michael (Lynn) Carrolla of Madison and Shirley Carrolla of Deep River. Her Funeral Procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., Tuesday morning at 10:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Frances Cabrini Church at 11:00. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Monday from 4 to 8 pm. REDMAN, STELLA
Stella (Senetcen) Redman, 93, of Bristol, widow of Frederick Redman died Saturday at the Bristol Hospital. Mrs. Redman was born Jan. 20, 1914 in Maynard, MA. She was the daughter of Fred & Ellen (Mayora) Senetcen and had been a resident of Bristol for over 70 years. Prior to her retirement she was employed by the former New Departure Co., of Bristol. She was a member of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church, Terryville. Stella was an avid UCONN & Boston Red Sox fan. She is survived by, 3 sisters, Martha Odaynik of North Haven, Olga Barlow of Blandford, MA, and Anne Schultz of Terryville, several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Alex, Louis & Fred Pat Senetcen and two sisters, Mary Conway & Elizabeth Dziedzic. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 9:30a.m from the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville to Sts Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church, Terryville at 10:00. CLEARY, JULIA SHEILA
Mrs. Julia Sheila Cleary, age 84, beloved wife of the late Joseph F. Cleary, of West Haven, passed way on Saturday, December 8, 2007, in Harborview Manor, West Haven. She was born in Ireland, on December 12, 1922, to the late Michael and Margaret O'Brien. She retired from the former U.S. Motors. She was a well known singer. Survivors include two sons, Joseph P. Cleary of West Haven, and Michael F. Cleary of Aurora, CO, a sister Bernadette Delaney of Oklahoma, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. She was predeceased by a daughter Margaret Mary Cleary. Services and Burial will be held privately. MALAFRONTE, JERRY J.
Chatham, MA Jerry J. Malafronte, age 92, entered into rest on Saturday Dec. 8, 2007 at Liberty Commons Health Care Center in Chatham, MA with his loving family by his side. He was a devoted husband to Mary V. Antonacci Malafronte for 53 years until her death in 2003. He was born in Derby on Nov. 12, 1915 son of the late Antonio and Mary Maturo Malafronte and was a resident of Derby for 20 years and Huntington for 32 years before moving to be with his daughter and her family in Harwich, MA. At age 15, Jerry entered into the family business, Tony's Service Station in Derby, which he subsequently owned and operated with his brother Anthony "Red" until his retirement. He loved his family who will miss his sage and sound paternal advice. He enjoyed musical entertainment of all kinds and had a passion for Ballroom Dancing, which he did with his wife and circle of friends every Saturday night. They were members of the Derby and Shelton Senior Centers. Jerry is a former member of the Derby Elks Club and former communicant at St. Mary Church in Derby and St. Lawrence Church in Huntington. In his younger days, he was a member of the Turner Club and became quite a gymnast. He also was a long-distance swimmer and completed a cross-harbor swim in Long Island Sound. He is the beloved father of Mary Lu Ploski and her husband Franklin A. of Harwich, MA, loving grandfather of Rebecca Bellemare and her husband Timothy of Cromwell and Michael Ploski of Harwich, MA. He is survived by his brothers, Ernest Malafronte of Largo, Fl and Anthony Red Malafronte of Shelton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son Gerard. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home 253 Elizabeth St. Derby. His funeral will leave the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30 am For a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Mary Church. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery. PFISTERER, HORTENSE M.
Hortense M. Pfisterer, 94, died Thursday, December 6, 2007, at her home in Hamden. Born in St. Albans, VT, she traveled extensively and was a very active community volunteer. Her energy was boundless, and she always enjoyed being with her family. As a young woman, she came to New Haven in the 1940's with her husband Henry A. Pfisterer. Mr. Pfisterer was a well known structural engineer and professor at the Yale University School of Architecture. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry, and six brothers and sisters. As a volunteer, she spent many years with the American Red Cross, Visiting Nurse Association, Junior League and the Yale Dames, now known as YUWO (Yale University Women's Organization). She took advantage of many educational programs and never stopped wanting to learn. She is survived by her son Charles Pfisterer of Madison, her daughter Carole P. Hart of Chestertown, NY, four grandchildren; Katy Armenia of Clinton, CT, Christopher Hart of Evanston, IL, Kimberly Hein of Short Hills, NJ, and Kyle Hart of Oak Park, IL and six great-grandchildren; Kaylee Armenia of Clinton, CT, Elena Hart of Evanston, IL, Caleb Hart of Evanston, IL, Henry Hart of Oak Park, IL, Maeve Hart of Oak Park, IL and Casey Hein of Short Hills, NJ. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date to be announced.
