John "Jack" Linevitch Jr.

John “Jack” Linevitch, Jr., age 61, of 42 Inchcliffe Drive, Gales Ferry passed away on October 31 at his home after a courageous battle against cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends. He was a warm and caring person who always thought of others before himself. Jack will be remembered for his strength, love of family and friends, and his selflessness.
Born in Hanover Township, PA on August 24, 1941, he was the son of the late John Linevitch, Sr. and Genevieve Linevitch of Bridgeport, CT. His childhood years were spent in Mountaintop. PA
He is survived by Helen, his loving wife of 39 years, whom he married
on September 14, 1963.
Mr. Linevitch was employed by Electric Boat in Groton where he worked in the engineering department for over 24 years at the time of his illness.
He spent 20 years in the United States Navy retiring in 1978 with the rate of Senior Chief.. His career spanned time spent on the USS Hugh Purvis (DD709), USS Sirago (SS485) , and the USS Flying Fish (SSN673)
He was an avid fisherman and gardener. Jack started the annual Opening Day Trout Tournament, attended by numerous family and friends. His fishing pole will be handed down to one of his seven grandchildren, who hopefully will keep the tradition alive. He was extremely sports oriented and coached youth football, baseball and softball.
Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by a son John Arthur Linevitch and his wife Beth, of Windham ME., two daughters Barbara Linevitch Leandri and her husband, John, of Gales Ferry, and Donna Marie Roehr and her husband, Lawrence, of Belleville, MI. His brother Thomas Linevitch of Groton also survives him.
He was a loving Dzia Dzi (Grandfather) to his seven grandchildren, Lauren and Julia Linevitch, Steven, Michael and Anna Leandri, and Allison and Nathan Roehr.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph deCosta at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Rte. 12, Gales Ferry on Tuesday at 10:00 am.
Burial will follow with military honors at Avery-Stoddard Cemetery, Ledyard. Following the Cemetery service, the family invites those in attendance to join them at the Groton Motor Inn for a reception.
It was his wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Rte. 12, Gales Ferry, CT 06335, The Niantic Community Church, 170 Pennsylvania Ave., Niantic, CT 06357 or to Hospice of SE CT., PO Box 902, Uncasville, CT 06382.
Carol (Woods) Landis

Carol Sue (Woods) Landis, age 63, of 35 Sherman Street, New London, died Sunday at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.
Mrs. Landis was born in Mount Clemens, MI on October 18, 1938, the daughter of the late Carl Woods and Margaret (Walters) Woods.
Before her retirement in June, she was a staff assistant for the US Department of State and resided in Beltsville, MD
Besides her mother, she is survived by her daughter Margaret “Meg” Landis of New London with whom she made her home, a son Gordon Landis of El Segundo, CA, and a brother Robert Woods of Ray, MI.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20, at College Park United Methodist Church in College Park, Md. Donations in Mrs.’s Landis memory may be made to Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT
Nathan Williams Pearson

Nathan Williams Pearson, advisor to the Mellon family for more than 50 years and consultant to some of the largest businesses in America, died June 11th at the age of 91.
A native of new York City, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1932 and went on to receive a masters degree in business administration from Harvard University in 1934.
In earlier years, he worked at US Steel Corp., Matson Navigation Co., and Carborundum Company.
He later entered the US Navy where he met his wife, Kathleen Patricia McMurtry.
In 1948, he joined T. Mellon & Sons, the firm that managed assets of Andrew Mellon's children. In 1970, he was appointed director of the Mellon National Bank and Trust Co., now known as Mellon Financial Corp.
He also served on baords of several comapnies including Gulf Oil and Alcoa. he was appointed chairman emeritus of Mellon in 1987 and served on the advisory board from 1991-1999. of Swickley, PA, died recently in Pennsylvania.
In addition to his wife, he iss survived by a son, Nathan Pearson Jr. of Rye, NY, 3 grandchildren, 3 nieces and a nephew. he was predeceased by a son, James S. Pearson.
Family members will conduct a Graveside Service at the Gallup Hill family Cemetery on Saturday, July 13th at 11am. There are no visiting hours.
Capt. Stephen B. Lee, USN Retired

NOANK-Captain Stephen Bacon Lee, USN retired, of 44 Hillside Avenue, Noank died Wednesday at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton.
He was born in Washington, DC on June 18, 1915 the son of James I. Lee, Jr. and Clara B. (Bacon) Lee. Capt. Lee comes from a distinguished family that counts Harry “Lighthorse” Lee and Confederate General Robert E. Lee among his ancestors.
He received his BA degree at the College of Washington and Lee and his Masters Degree from George Washington University.
He served 28 years in the Navy before retiring with the rank of Captain. His career spanned the globe, with duty in such places as Paris, Maui, Germany, the Rivera and Connecticut. He returned to Noank in 1971 and was active in real estate from 1974-1979.
He married
the former Hildegard F. Rossmann in 1979.
Capt. Lee was recognized for his contributions over the years as a Navy Family Service Center Volunteer. He served as Director, Retired Activities Office at the Submarine Base.
He was employed at the Mystic Seaport Museum from 1971-1973 as Supervisor of Visitors Reception and was a volunteer from 1973 until the present. In 1981 he was honored for 420 hours of voluntary service, the highest individual hours that year. He initiated the idea of an Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous, which became one of the Museums most popular annual events.
Capt. Lee was elected to membership in the Mystic Rotary Club in 1971 and served as President in 1975. He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in 1981.
He was honored in 1985 with the Mystic Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award.
Capt. Lee’s other efforts included Director of Civil Defense for the Town of Groton, Chairman of the four town Bicentennial Committees for Stonington, North Stonington, Ledyard and Groton for joint events, past president of the Nathan Hale Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, past president of the Noank Historical Society, Past Commodore and historian of the Ram Island Yacht Club and held membership in the New York Yacht Club, Philadelphia's Corinthian Yacht Club and Club de la Voile de Villefranche on the Riviera. He was a past board member of the Mystic Depot, the Mystic-Noank Library, the Mystic Art Association and the Indian and Colonial Research Center.
In addition to his wife, he survived by his nephew Dr. James Lee of Boston. He was predeceased by his only son, Stephen B. Lee, Jr. his first wife Helen Louise Lee and his brother Admiral James R. Lee.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at 11:00 AM at the Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Noank. There are no visiting hours.

Rodney "Scooter" Robinson

Rodney "Scooter" Robinson, age 51, of Groton, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
Scooter was born in Westerly on August 30, 1953 to Harold and Thelma Robinson. He was a member of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation.
He is survived by his sons, Damian of new Jersey and Reginald of Groton, 4 brothers, Michael, Russell, Mark Wayne, and Roger Robinson, his former companions, Mary Nichols and Noelle Scotty Henderson, a grandson, Rohan Lee Robinson, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and relatives.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic on Monday from 2-3pm, immediately followed by a service at 3pm. Burial is private.

Richard M. "Dick" Brooks

Richard M. “Dick” Brooks, 54, of Alden St., Mystic, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Gloversville, NY on April 8, 1950 the son of the late Arthur E. and Maude M. Brooks. Raised in mystic, he attended local schools and was a 1968 graduate of Stonington High School.
Dick enjoyed a long career as a Foreman Pipefitter/welder with Local Union 777, working at Pfizer and several construction companies. Throughout his career, he was proud of his accomplishments, from serving his 5year apprenticeship, becoming a journeyman, and eventually becoming a Foreman.
Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing and took great pride in his family.
He was married
to Nena G.M. Brooks in Mystic in 2001, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Robbin Brooks of Waterford and Michael Brooks of Mystic, 2 stepsons, Joshua Melzer and Donald Melzer Jr. and stepmother, Jess Brooks; his siblings, Arthur Brooks Jr of Missouri, Kenneth Brooks of New London, Deborah Ward of preston and Timothy Brooks of Groton; 8 ˝ grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 siblings, Dennis and Edward Brooks, and Cindy Morris.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Sunday from 5-7 and Monday from 10-10:45am, immediately follwed by a service at 11am. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Malcolm Fitch Brown

MYSTIC: Malcolm Fitch Brown of 7 Griffen Drive, Mystic, died April 29th at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
Born March 24, 1923, he was the son of George William and Maria Fitch Brown of Noank and a graduate of Robert E. Fitch High School in Groton and of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Class of 1944.
During World War II, he served at sea on Liberty ships, freighters and tankers as a cadet midshipman. He survived the sinking of a Liberty ship off the coast of Nova Scotia, the loss of a second ship in the Mediterranean and the sinking by dive-bombing of the Liberty ship “Charles Warfield” at Civitavecchia, the port of Rome.
At war’s end, he was a first officer, licensed to pilot any vessel, of any tonnage, under sail or steam, on any ocean.
Graduating from the Administration Course at General Motors’ Institute in Flint, Michigan, Mr. Brown returned to Noank to join his father in the management of Brown Buick until his father’s retirement in 1960.
In March, 1961, Mr. Brown was appointed Groton Public Schools’ Business Manager and he served the town in that post for 28 years, retiring on August 25, 1989. During his tenure, he represented the town of Groton before Congressional committees, ultimately securing yearly grants of seven million dollars in lieu of taxes as compensation for the high percentage of Groton students residing in federal housing.
He was a former president of the Connecticut Association of School Business officials,an organization he helped to found.
An avid sailor and former member of Ram Island Yacht Club, he had led Noank’s Sea Scout Troop.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Mumford Cove Club and also of Bishop’s Cove.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, the former Harriet Babcock of Stonington, by a daughter, Priscilla B. Embry of Lyme, by a son, Malcolm, Jr. of Underwood, Washington, and by grandchildren Nathaniel, Julia and Jessamyn Embry.
A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary Church in Stonington on Wednesday, May 5, at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Stonington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 238 West Town Street, Norwich CT 06360 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
