James L. Bridgman

On Saturday April 30, 2005, James Lee Bridgman peacefully passed away surrounded by family and loved ones at the home of his long time companion Elaine Lemmons.
Known to all his friends as Jimmy, he is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law Shawn P. and Cara Bridgman of Niantic, Matthew F. and Terri Bridgman of Philadelphia, PA. Jimmy also leaves behind four grandchildren Michael Bridgman of Washington, D.C., Brittany Bridgman of Waterford, Alex and Damon Bridgman of Niantic.
After twenty years of a loving relationship, Jimmy is also survived by Elaine’s two children Robert Kilpatrick, Doyle Kilpatrick and their families.
Jimmy was born on Aug. 29, 1941 the son of Robert L. and Margaret Bridgman. He was also predeceased by a brother Robert Bridgman.
He will be sadly missed by his brothers Edward and Chris Bridgman both of Groton, William Bridgman of Norwich, Leonard Bridgman of Mystic.
Jimmy made his homes in Groton and Gilford, Maine. He attended schools in New York, Kansas and finally graduating from Fitch Senior High, ”The old Fitch as Jimmy referred to it.”
He joined the U. S. Navy in 1959 and traveled extensively throughout Europe, and in a strange twist of fate, he was able to serve his duty with his younger brother Edward. After twenty years of service to General Dynamics (E. B.), he retired as an NTO foreman in 1996.
Jimmy had a great love of the outdoors. In the lodge in Maine, he and Elaine hosted many weekend gathering including some infamous card games known to all on the lake. Fishing with his brothers Eddie and Chris on the waters of Long Island Sound, Jimmy truly made his home, his wish is for his ashes to be scattered there. His greatest pleasure in life was spent with his son Shawn building their log home in Maine.
On Tuesday, May 3 visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8pm at the Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.

Bruce L. Bullough

Captain Bruce L. Bullough, USN (Ret.), died Monday, April 28, 2003 at home following a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was born in Salt Lake City, UT on Dec. 27, 1948, the son of Vaughn and Jewel Stapp Bullough of Florence, Alabama. He graduated from Coffee High School in Florence, in 1967 and attended Auburn University on an NROTC scholarship. In 1968 he received a presidential appointment to the United States Naval Academy, graduating as a member of the class of 1972 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Bruce’s distinguished twenty-nine year naval career was dedicated to the submarine force. Following six months duty on board diesel submarines at Key West, Florida, he attended Nuclear Power Training at Vallejo, California, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, then Submarine School at New London, CT.
Bruce served two years on board USS Sunfish (SSN 649), attended Submarine Officer Advanced Course and served two years on board USS George C Marshall (SSBN 654)(Blue). He served as an instructor at the S1W Prototype in Idaho Falls, Idaho, from December 1978 until April 1981then served as Engineering Officer on board USS Daniel Webster (SSBN 626) (Blue) until May 1984. Bruce served as Executive Officer on board USS Tullibee (SSN 597) from July 1984 until October 1986 and Executive Officer on board USS Lafayette (SSBN 616) (Gold) from December 1986 until March 1988.
He commanded USS Jack (SSN 605) from November 1988 until JACK was decommissioned on July 11, 1990. Bruce assumed command of USS ULYSSES S. GRANT (SSBN 631) (BLUE) in August 1990, completing two patrols in command.
Bruce was assigned to the Staff of Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic, Groton, CT and also served as Director of Navy Undersea Warfare for Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, Norfolk, VA, before retiring from the Navy. Following his retirement in 2001, he worked for Sonalysts, Inc., in Waterford, CT.
A resident of Gales Ferry for 22 years, Bruce enjoyed his associations in his community. He was an active member of the Groton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed hosting cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy and was a member of the Ledyard Rotary.
Besides his parents, Bruce is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cecilia Novotny Bullough whom he married
on April 22, 1974 in Salt Lake City, Utah, his son Ben of Arlington, VA, his daughter Liz of Provo, UT and his son Jon of Provo, UT. , his brother Stephen of Sandy, UT, his brother Roger of Florence, AL and his sister Barbara Riherd of Lake Butler, FL.
A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 o’clock at the Groton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1230 Flanders Road, Mystic. Interment with Military Honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 4 until 6 o’clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund, 50 E. North Temple, Salt Lake City, UT, 84150-1501.
Eleanor Sherman Taylor

Eleanor “Ellie” Sherman Taylor, 66, of 19 Best View Rd. in Quaker Hill, died Sun., Apr. 3, 2005 at the Greentree Manor in Waterford.
She was born on May 7, 1938 in New London the daughter of Randall and Estella Kilroy Sherman.
Ellie had married
Robert D. Taylor, Sr. on Dec. 20, 1958 in Colchester.
A graduate of the Joseph Lawrence School of Nursing in New London, Ellie had worked as a Registered Nurse for over 33 years at the Nutmeg Pavilion in New London.
She was a member of the Quaker Hill Baptist Church, the Joseph Lawrence School of Nursing Alumni and the Lawrence Memorial hospital Auxiliary.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son Robert D. Taylor, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Langhorne, PA., a sister Nancy Russo of Norwich and two grandchildren Leah Grace Taylor and Joshua Randall Taylor, both of Langhorne.
She had also been predeceased by a sister Deborah Darling.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am Thur., Apr. 7, at the Quaker Hill Baptist Church. 144 Old Norwich Rd.
Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery in Quaker Hill.
There will be a visiting hour from 10 to 11 prior to the service at the Church.
Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is in charge of arrangements.

Loretta D. Short

New London - Loretta Doreen Short passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 27, 2005 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Sept. 13, 1948 in Corbin City, N.J., and moved to New London in 1999.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Charles D. Short. She is also survived by her father, Edward Layton, of Corbin City; her brother, Edward Layton and his wife, Patricia, of Seaville, N.J.; sister, Terry C. Terry and her husband, Bud, of Tuckahoe, N.J.; an aunt, Mikie Moore of Petersburg, N.J., and an uncle, Dennis Moore of Petersburg, N.J. Loretta is also survived by her children, Allen Carter Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of South Seaville, Constance Showers and her husband, Frederick, of Tuckahoe, son, Edward Carter and his wife, Theresa, of Tuckahoe, N.J., son, Jason Carter of Estell Manor; and daughters, Mariah and Shilo Kubiak, of Corbin City, N.J. She has six grandchildren all of southern New Jersey, they are Dannielle, Allison, Allen III, Ashley, Edward Jr., and Johnathan; and stepchildren, Daniel Short, of Portland, Maine, and Susan E. Green, of Hull, Mass.
Mrs. Short was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary to Murphy Rathbun Post 189 serving as secretary/treasurer, and serving on the Breakfast Committee. She was currently the State Chaplain of the Department of Connecticut VFW Auxiliary and would have been president in three years. She was the immediate past Grand President of the MOCA of CT 3rd Treasurer of Aux., Pup Tent No. 5. She was the VAVS Rep. for the MOCA at West Haven Veteran's Hospital. She was the Past State Counselor and was currently serving as associate member of Crescent Council No. 61, Daughters of America, Goshen, N.J.
Loretta will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at the First Church of Christ Congregation, New London. Burial will be private and there are to be no visiting hours.

Richard Wayne Miller

Richard Wayne Miller, 55, of 49 Virginia Ave. in Groton, Ct. died Tuesday, Mar. 29, 2005 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on Nov. 22, 1949 in Washington, D.C. the son of Brice W. and Pearlie Marie Johnson Miller.
For several years, he had worked as a Draftsman at the Electric Boat Company in Groton.
His survivors include a sister Lois Vermillion of Indian Rocks Beach, Fl., a brother Edward T. Miller of Baltimore, MD., and a nephew Matthew Miller of Ellicott City, MD.
Graveside service will be held at 12 pm Sat., April 2 at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton. There are no visiting hours.

Shirley Berry Fish

Shirley Berry Fish, 75, of 54 Brookshaven Rd. in Groton died Thurs., Mar. 31, 2005 at the Yale- New Haven Hospital.
She was born on May 21, 1929 in Norridgewock, ME. the daughter of Kenneth L. and Elva Sheaff Berry.
Shirley was married
to Kenneth C. Fish on Oct. 5, 1948 in Skowhegan.
She was a very active member of the Groton Senior Citizens who enjoyed traveling, camping, bingo and above all, her family.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter Debra Desrosiers of Griswold, four sons Richard D. Fish of Baltic, Gale L. Fish of Ivoryton, Galen L. Fish of Portsmouth, VA., Kenneth C. Fish of Napa, CA., a sister Lois Lee of Rhode Island, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 1 pm, Mon. April 4 at the Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
Burial will be held at a later date in the East Cemetery in Skowhegan, ME.
Visiting hours will be held from 11 to 1 pm Monday prior to the service.

Arnold C. Perkins

North Stonington - Arnold C. Perkins, 85, of Babcock Road, North Stonington, died peacefully Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at The Westerly Hospital surround by his loving family.
Born in Westerly, March 12, 1920, he was the son of the late Clarence and Mary (Tillinghast) Perkins and was raised by his aunt and uncle, Edna and Bill Durfee.
He married
his beloved wife, Barbara C. Perkins on Sept 5, 1941, and spent 60 years with her before her death in 2002.
Mr. Perkins, also known as "Pop", loved gardening, his horses, puttering around his home, and his beloved dog, Max. Over the course of his lifetime, Mr. Perkins worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, enlisted in the Navy in 1941, and served on the USS-S43 Submarine. After the service Mr. Perkins worked at Electric Boat for a short time before moving on and retiring from Pfizer Inc. after 28 years in the fermentation department. Over the years Mr. Perkins was involved in many organizations such as the American Legion Post #114, the Stonington Grange, the Masons, a charter member of the Groton Lodge of Elks, a life member of the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Dept., and a member of the North Stonington Agricultural Fair.
Mr. Perkins is survived by three sons and their wives, Robert and Maureen Perkins of Calif., Arnold A. and Janet Perkins, and Mark and Debra Perkins; two daughters and their husbands, Catherine and Richard Holman and Norma and Stephen Holliday all of North Stonington; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who all had a special place in his heart.
There will be no visiting hours and burial will be private. There will be a memorial service held on April 10, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Old Clarks Falls Baptist Church on Clarks Falls Road, North Stonington.
