Jane Jaeger, 99, former teacher
Jane P. Jaeger, a former math teacher, died on Dec. 31 in Danbury. She was 99 years old and had lived in Ridgefield for more than a decade.
Mrs. Jaeger spent her youth in Williamsport, Pa. After her graduation from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., with a magna cum laude degree in mathematics, she taught school for several years.
She then married William J. Jaeger, an attorney, and lived in Madison, N.J., for 55 years, nearly all in a home that they had designed together.
During that time she raised a son, William R. Jaeger of Ridgefield.
Mrs. Jaeger had been an exceptionally accomplished voluntary Braille transcriber of mathematical and other textbooks. Among her recreational activities, she was an especially avid bridge player.
Two years after Mr. Jaeger’s death in 1991, she and her brother moved to Ridgefield near her son, where she remained until stricken by congestive heart failure a year ago.
Those who have known Mrs. Jaeger were impressed by her warmth and loving nature, her interest in others and her intellect, her son said.
Besides her son and her daughter-in-law, Pamela H. Jaeger, Mrs. Jaeger is survived by her granddaughter Lisa L. Jaeger of Yonkers, N.Y., and grandson Steven R. Jaeger and his wife Rachel of Gloucester, Mass. She is also survived by nieces Patricia Breinin and Karen Nelson; nephews W. Stephen Prior, David Ruggles and John Ruggles; and by cousins Robert L. Wise and Victor C. Wise.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at The Gardens, 8 Glen Hill Road, Danbury.

W. Merritt Jones, 85, Fraunces Tavern director
W. Merritt Jones, 85, of Ridgefield, husband of Emilie (Bidlingmeyer) Jones, died on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at Danbury Hospital shortly after his admission.
Mr. Jones was born in Utica, New York, June 21, 1918, son of Griffith D. and Winifred (Francis) Jones. He attended New York state schools, Columbia University and graduated from Pace University.
A decorated World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, Mr. Jones was a retired executive director of the historic Fraunces Tavern in lower Manhattan, NY. Prior, Mr. Jones was the financial vice-president of Pace University.
A Ridgefield resident since 1954 coming from Westchester County, NY, he was active in the Ridgefield community and was a past president of the Great Pond Club and a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry Board as well as president of its Men’s Club. Proud of his Welsh heritage, he was a member of the St. David’s Society.
In addition to his wife Emilie, three daughters survive him, Elise J. Montanari and her husband Arthur of Bethel, CT, Sandra E. Lilly and her husband Steven of Ashfield, MA and Karen A. McDonald and her husband Scott of Truckee, CA, five granddaughters and a great grandson.
A brother Ralph H. Jones predeceased Mr. Jones.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday at 11AM in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Ridgefield.
Interment will take place in the spring.
Friends will be received in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Wednesday from 5PM to 8PM.
Memorials to one’s own favorite charity would be appreciated.
Marion Keefe, 42-year Ridgefielder
Marion T. Keefe of Ridgefield, a homemaker who enjoyed family and travel, died on Friday morning, Dec. 12, at Danbury Hospital. She was 75 years old and the wife of Raymond E. Keefe Jr.
Mrs. Keefe was born in Binghamton, N.Y., on Dec. 4, 1928, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Koskovsky Slachta. She attended Binghamton schools and met her future husband while they were students in high school. They were married in 1950.
Mrs. Keefe came to Ridgefield 42 years ago when her husband was transferred by IBM. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and enjoyed traveling, music and especially her family. She had also been a Little League volunteer when her children were young.
“She was a quiet family woman,” Raymond Keefe said.
The Keefes enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, and Mrs. Keefe was particularly fond of ocean voyages. When they visited Europe, they would often sail aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Keefe is survived by three sons, Robert J. Keefe of Bethel, Brian W. Keefe and his wife Frances of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Raymond E. Keefe and his wife Heidi of Ridgefield; a daughter, Susan M. Keefe of Ridgefield; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Keefe of Apalachin, N.Y.; a brother, Joseph Slachta of Hillcrest, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Rossow of Binghamton; and seven grandchildren, Anne, Andrew, Zachary, Erin, Riley, Aidan and Rory.
A son, Michael R. Keefe, and a brother, John Slachta, died before her.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Vestal, N.Y.
Burial was in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott, N.Y.

Manfred Landers, 99, executive
Manfred Landers of Kumquat Lane, a retired food company executive, died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, in his home. He was 99 years old.
Mr. Landers was born in Hamburg, Germany, and came to this country in the early 1920’s to purchase grains for flour mills owned by his family. In 1940 he founded Lanco Products, a manufacturer of food preservatives and stabilizers. He later sold Lanco to SuCrest Corp. and then developed European markets for SuCrest until his retirement in 1960.
When in his 70’s, Mr. Landers started an importing company for cosmetics from Germany. He later sold his share in this company and started to import and export hardware and lawn and garden products from Europe and other countries throughout the world under the Landstand Inc. name.
Mr. Landers had formerly lived in East Hampton, N.Y.
He is survived by two sons, Eric Landers of New Canaan and Jon Landers of Newtown, along with four grandchildren, Danika and Christopher Landers of New Canaan, and Samantha and Stephanie Landers of Ridgefield and Newtown.
A memorial service will be held at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, on Saturday, Jan. 3, from noon to 2.

Patricia Link Murphy, 79, former resident
Patricia Link Murphy of Norwalk, a longtime Stamford resident, and former Ridgefielder died Friday, Dec. 5, at home. She was 79.
Born Oct. 31, 1924, in Kirksville, Mo., she was a daughter of the late Dr. Samuel Benijah Link and Mary Catherine Seaman.
Mrs. Murphy graduated from Stamford High School in 1942 and lived in Stamford for many years before moving to Norwalk in 1989. She lived in Ridgefield with her son and his family in the mid 1980's.
She enjoyed driving, solving crossword puzzles and traveling to Florida.
Mrs. Murphy was a retired office manager with the City of Stamford Assessors Office and worked there for more than 25 years.
She is survived by a brother, Walker G. Link of Southport; four sons, Thomas C. Murphy, Jr. of Riverdale, Md.; Brian J. Murphy of Fairfield; Joseph E. Murphy, his wife Christine and their two children, Shane and Maura, of Ridgefield; and Christopher L. Murphy of Milford; three daughters, Sally E. Miller of Stamford, Patricia A. Murphy of Stamford and Barbara E. Murphy of Norwalk; 11 other grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Thomas C. Murphy, her sister Sally Link Bilder, her brother Samuel A. Link and her first husband, Corporal Robert Cavanaugh, predeceased her.
A Christian service was held Dec. 9 at St. John's Church in Stamford with burial at St. John's Cemetery, Darien.
Helen Neundorfer, native of Austria
Helen Neundorfer of Prospect Street, a native of Austria and longtime resident of New York City, died on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Danbury Hospital. She was 89 years old, the widow of Edmund Neundorfer, and the mother of Elfriede Proctor of Ridgefield.
A native of Tobaj, Austria, Mrs. Neundorfer was born on Aug. 15, 1914 to Joseph and Mary Unger Billovits. She grew up in Austria and came to the United States in 1935.
Mrs. Neundorfer was a homemaker and had lived in the Bronx, Elmhurst and Middle Village, N.Y., before coming to Ridgefield in 1995. Here she had participated in the senior citizen luncheon programs.
“She was a loving, caring and independent woman who enjoyed taking care of her family and home and she had a lifelong interest in cooking, baking and sewing,” her daughter said. “She will be greatly missed.”
Besides her daughter and her son-in-law Richard Proctor, Mrs. Neundorfer is survived by another son-in-law, John Lewkiewicz; four grandchildren, Courtney Proctor West and her husband Richard of Darien, John Proctor and his wife Jennifer of Ridgefield, David Proctor of New York, N.Y., and Stephanie Lewkiewicz of Ridgefield; and a great-grandson, Tyler Proctor of Ridgefield.
A daughter, Helen Lewkiewicz, and nine siblings predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday in St. Mary’s Church.
Burial followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.
Charles Nolan, 52, Marine veteran
Charles W. Nolan of St. Charles, Ill., a former Ridgefielder, died Monday, Nov. 17, at Delnor-Communtiy Hospital in Geneva, Ill. He was 52 years old.
Mr. Nolan was born June 10, 1951 in Woonsocket, R.I., to Harvey and Jane Nolan. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and received his MBA from Columbia University in New York.
Mr. Nolan served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps.
He was an avid golfer.
Mr. Nolan is survived by his wife of 29 years, Connie Campo Nolan; his mother, Jane Nolan of Connecticut; three daughters, Ursula Berg and her husband Keith of New Jersey, Alessandra and Victoria Nolan, both of St. Charles; a grandson, Ferris Berg; a brother, Alan Nolan and his wife Anne of Connecticut; a niece, Jennifer Nolan; and two nephews, Matthew and Sean Nolan.
A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 21, at St. Patrick Church, 408 Cedar Street, St. Charles, Ill. Burial will be at 2 on Monday, Nov. 24, at Brig. Gen. W.C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, N.J.
Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street (corner of Routes 64 and 25), St. Charles.

Kenneth O’Connor, credit manager, former resident
Kenneth O’Connor, of 29 Mystic Avenue, Pawcatuck, formerly of Ridgefield, died at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, on Saturday, Dec. 27. He was 57 years old and the husband of Mary (Will) O’Connor.
Mr. O’Connor was born in the Bronx N.Y., on Nov. 26, 1946, a son of Mary (Mawn) O’Connor.
He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, and attended Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. He had worked as a credit manager for the Revere Copper & Brass Company of New York.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Frizell, Jeanne Yake and Patricia Macartney, all of Danbury; and three brothers, James O’Connor, of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Robert O’Connor of Sherman, and William O’Connor of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Patricia Benson of Cape Coral, Fla.; Eileen Quinn of Bradenton, Fla., and Jeanne McGee of Beaver Brook, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury, on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery.

Alda Polverari, 88, loved to cook
Alda Paolini Polverari,of Ridgefield, a longtime Ridgefielder, died on Monday, Dec. 29, at her home. She was 88 years old and the widow of Gino Bob Polverari.
Mrs. Polverari was born in Bridgeport on Feb. 7, 1915, a daughter of the late Ernest and Caroline (Barbieri) Paolini. She attended Bridgeport schools. She and her husband, a Ridgefield native, met at a dance in Bridgeport. They were married for 62 years until his death in July 2001.
Mrs. Polverari was a homemaker. She had also worked at the former Towne Spirit Shop on Danbury Road that was co-owned by her husband and the late Alex Santini.
“‘Noni’ or ‘Non’ to all that loved her, she was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend,” her family said. “Everyone who knew her loved Noni. Her love for her family and friends along with her caring heart touched many lives.”
Mrs. Polverari enjoyed cooking lasagna, ravioli and porchetta for her family and friends. She was also an avid bingo player.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth Polverari of Ridgefield; a daughter, Maria Polverari of Wilton; two sisters, Clara Duban of Huntington and Lena DeSanty of Stamford; five grandchildren, Kristin Ryan, Donna Polverari, Renee Polverari, Kevin Polverari, and Matthew Polverari; and her caring friend, Veronica Howe.
A son, Peter Polverari, and a brother, Peter Paolini, died before her.
Private funeral services took place in the Kane Funeral Home.
There were no calling hours.
