Walter Burrill Hayden
Walter Burrill Hayden, 91, a lifelong East Putnam farmer, musician and artist, died July 18 at Westview Convalescent Center after a brief illness. He was born on January 20, 1915, the son of Anna Burrill Hayden and John Joseph Hayden, in the family home on East Putnam Road, where he lived all his life. He attended East Putnam Country School, eighth grade at Israel Putnam School, and graduated from Putnam High School in 1932. He worked on the farm with his father, an immigrant from County Wicklow, Ireland, raising sheep and poultry.
He married Ethel Harriet Pitkin of Putnam on June 15, 1946, in Putnam Baptist Church. Together they raised five children. He worked for the State Department of Transportation from 1948 to 1979, advancing from timekeeper to highway inspector. A talented musician, he played the Hawaiian electric guitar in square dance bands in the late 1930s and 1940s, and gave classical guitar lessons. Starting in 1942, he joined the Putnam Methodist Church and became first tenor in the male quartet with second tenor Steve Tripp, high bass Jack Mullett, and low bass George Willis. He later served as director of the Chancel Choir for many years. He sang in the Northeast Concert Choir for 44 years as a tenor and played second violin in the Willimantic Community Orchestra from 1986 to 2004. A lover of beauty, he painted some three dozen oil canvases of landscapes, seascapes, still-lifes and portraits. He raised a large vegetable garden every summer until he was 85, giving produce, including his popular sweet corn, to the community kitchen, friends, and family. He also planted many varieties of Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Day Lilies. He was a gentleman whom everyone loved.
He is survived by his wife and five children, Mary Jean Hayden of Pasadena, Calif., Walter John Hayden of Powhatan, Va., Michael Edward Hayden of Los Altos, Calif., Laura Lee Russo of Plainfield, and Elizabeth Grace Hayden of Sturbridge, Mass.; their spouses, Carla Tomaso, Sheila (Doble) Hayden, Catherina Martina, Ron Russo, and Ken Heidel; five grandchildren, Sean Walter Hayden and wife Brandi, Joseph Hayden and wife Sara, Jessica Duff, Christine Hayden and Catherine Hayden; one great-grandchild, Dylan Walter Hayden, niece Jean Watson Smith, nephew Jack Watson and cousin Helen Gibson Sheldon. He was predeceased by one sister, Marion Hayden Watson, in 1995.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 5, (Saturday) at Putnam United Methodist Church, 53 Grove St., Putnam. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Putnam United Methodist Church, 53 Grove St, Putnam, CT 06260.
Stanley W. Kwasek
Stanley W. Kwasek, 59, of Maynard St., Putnam died Tuesday morning at home after a courageous 10 month battle with lung cancer. He was born December 10, 1946 in Framingham MA., son of the late Joseph and Eva (Lemire) Kwasek.
He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1965 to 1969 with the US Navy, stationed in Danang as Naval Support. He was employed for 20 years at General Motors in Framingham until 1989 when the plant closed and at US Button in Putnam for the past nine years. He was a former member of the Putnam VFW and American Legion. Stanley was a loving and caring husband, father and pepe and enjoyed taking his children for walks. He loved to make everyone he came into contact with smile and laugh. His passing will leave a void in all those who knew and loved him.
He leaves his wife of 26 years, Andrea (Nichols) Kwasek, 6 children, Kimberly Perry and husband Jon of Marietta, GA, Tracey Koprusak of Burrillville, RI, Kristen Kwasek of Plainville, MA, Christopher Kwasek, Alexandria Kwasek and Jennifer Kwasek of Putnam, 7 grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Stanley was one of 9 children and leaves sisters Mary Luca and husband Charles of N. Conway, NH; Stella Kwasek of Wauregan; a brother George Higgins of Las Vegas, NV. Predeceased by siblings Billy Lemire, Theodore Kwasek, Joseph Kwasek.
The Funeral will be Saturday at 10 AM from the Smith & Walker Funeral Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at ST Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam. Burial with Military Honors in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam. Calling Hours Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Funeral Home.
George E. Davis, Sr.
George E. Davis, Sr., age 91, of Roseland Park Road, South Woodstock, died Sunday at the Webster Manor in Webster, MA. He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Basto) Davis; she died December 31,1993. He was born September 19, 1914 in Waterbury, son of the late George O. and Charlotte (Cote) Davis.
He worked for many years at the University Of Connecticut in the Horticulture Division, he retired in 1979, he also worked 14 years at the American Optical in Southbridge as a lens polisher, and Kaman Aerospace working as a metal fabricator. He made his home in South Woodstock all his life. He was a graduate of Woodstock Academy, Class of 1933. He was a former member of the Woodstock American Legion Post 111 and the South Woodstock Baptist Church.
He leaves a son; George Davis Jr. of Ashford; 3 daughters; Sandra Martin of Cleveland, TN; Jennifer Simms and her husband Philip of Campbell Hall, NY; Johanne Wenger and her husband James of South Woodstock; two sisters; Frances Dryer and Mildred Andrews both of Clinton. Seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers ; John Davis and Frederick Davis.
The Funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam. A calling hour Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Quassett Cemetery with Military Honors. Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice.
Harrison Coffman Deal
Harrison C. Deal of Pomfret died Monday August 14, 2006 at his home. Mr. Deal was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 4, 1910, the son of the late Gertrude (Coffman) and Harrison H. Deal.
He graduated from Minneapolis public schools and attended the University of Minnesota and the University of Pittsburg. A resident of Pomfret since the early 1950's, Mr. Deal was president of the Ivy Printers Company of Moosup and Wauregan until his retirement in 1974. The company produced fine hand-printed wallpaper, including reproductions and custom designs by Mr. Deal's sister Margaret, who collaborated with him in the business. After his retirement, he led an active life, traveling extensively with his wife and maintaining his interest in the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Minneapolis Museum of Art. He served on the Board of Directors of the Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam from 1969 until 1982; he was President of the Hospital's Board of Trustees from 1975 until 1982 and was made an honorary Board member in 1982. Mr. Deal was a benefactor of the Rectory School, his immediate neighbor in Pomfret, receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He was a member of Christ Church in Pomfret for over 50 years.
Mr. Deal's first marriage, to Martha M. Swanson, ended in divorce. In 1954 he was married to Daire Van Battenburg Driscoll, who died in 1992. His sisters Margaret Deal of Pomfret, Helen Blodget, also of Pomfret, and Mary Selcer predeceased him. Mr. Deal is survived by a daughter from his first marriage, Leigh Fabens, (Mrs. Andrew L. III) of Cleveland Ohio; grandchildren Andrew L. Fabens IV and wife Nicola of New York City and Jennie F. Kaffen (Mrs. Jonathan) of Cleveland; and great-grandchildren Alicia and Joseph Kaffen and Peter and Malcolm Fabens. In addition he is survived by nieces Joy Driscoll Antonelli and her daughter, Susan Messina, of Palm Harbor, Florida; Edith (Dede) Swain Bullock of Orrington, Maine and Susan Swain Tabor of Foster, RI and nephew Leonard Swain of Sarasota, Florida. His dear friend, Evelyn Seaton Treiber of Central Village also survives him.
A Memorial service will be held August 26th (Saturday) at 3:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 521 Pomfret St., Pomfret. Interment will be private. M. Keith Lewis
M. Keith Lewis of Eastford, age 87, died Friday evening August 18, 2006, at his home surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Ruth (Young) Lewis; they were married August 21, 1938. They would have been married 68 years on Monday. He was born November 24, 1918 in Putnam, the only child of M. Darwin and Eleanor (Keith) Lewis.
Keith was a graduate of Woodstock Academy in 1936 and attended Bay Bath College. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Eastford, a Charter Member of Eastford Independent Fire Company, a member of the Putnam Lodge 46 AF & AM in South Woodstock, the American Legion Post 203 of Eastford, and life Member of Willimantic Elks Lodge Willimantic BPOE. He served as a State Representative for the Town of Eastford from 1963 – 1964, was Chairman of the Eastford Republican Town Committee for 25 years and a member of the Board of Tax Review. Keith was employed at Capitol Garage in Willimantic for many years where he was the manager of the body shop. He operated service stations on the former Connecticut turnpike, after retirement, he worked for the House Republicans in Hartford, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. During the summer you would find him enjoying the "cottage" at Crystal Pond, spending many hours tending his garden and fruit trees and many winters were spent in the warmer climate, in Winter Haven or Zephyrhills, Fl.
In addition to his wife he leaves three daughters, Nancy and Russell Mayhew of Eastford; Joanne and Raymond Korner of W. Yarmouth, MA.; Susan and Thomas Dillon of So. Dennis, MA.; Grandchildren: Douglas and Gretchen Mayhew Diane and Randy Matteau; Christopher and Karen Mayhew; James Korner; Kathryn Korner; Robin and Dennis Driscoll; Melissa and Thomas Cummins; Eileen Dillon; Great Grandchildren: Chloe and Katherine Mayhew, Mandi and Brady Matteau, Christopher, Cara and Marissa Mayhew, Marisa and Myranda Korner, Rachel, Kathleen and Sarah Driscoll and Emmett and Sullivan Cummins.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Congregational Church of Eastford, 8 Church Road, Eastford. Burial with Military Honors in Grove Cemetery, Eastford. Robert “Bob” Joseph Ricci, Jr.
Robert “Bob” Joseph Ricci, Jr., 37, of Reardon Rd., North Grosvenordale, died unexpectedly Sunday, August 20, 2006, in Putnam, beloved husband of Pamela (Fafard) Ricci, his childhood sweetheart. He was born February 17, 1969, in Webster, MA, son of Robert Joseph Ricci, Sr. and Diane Girard Ricci.
He made his home in Thompson all of his life, attended Tourtellotte High School. He was an excavator operator at McManus Excavating in Northborough, MA, for 10 years and also had worked at his father’s garage doing auto body work. He enjoyed riding dirt bikes with his son, rebuilding his Harley, and riding his motorcycle. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, son and uncle and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always ready to help someone out.
He leaves his wife of sixteen years, Pamela Ricci, daughters, Nichole Ann Ricci, Lauren Ashley Ricci, son, Anthony Rocco Ricci, all of Thompson, father, Robert Joseph Ricci, Sr. and wife Geralyn Ricci of Thompson, mother Diane Girard Ricci of Webster, sisters Wendy Ann Ricci of Shrewsbury, MA, Tammy Marie Julian and husband Ken of Carolina Beach, NC, 8 nieces and 2 nephews, Nia, Danielle, Alicia, Tricia, Sammy, Kimberly, Kayla, Emily, Jagger, Dylan, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Joseph and Tina Rickaby, Charles and Lori Fafard, William and Tammy Mackenzie, father-in-law Robert W. Fafard, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Predeceased by loving mother-in-law Lorraine M. Fafard.

Alice Marie Vanasse
Alice Marie Vanasse, age 108, formerly of Pineville Road, Dayville, died Sunday morning August 20, 2006, at the Westview Health Care Center in Dayville. She was born July 17, 1898 in Fremont, New Hampshire, daughter of the late Reme and Laura (Beaulieu) Jolicoeur.
Alice owned and operated Alice's Beauty Salon on Gladys Street in Danielson for over 35 years, she retired in 1966. In the 1940s she worked at the Belding's Company in Putnam for ten years. She was a resident of killingly for over 70 years; communicant of St. Anne's Church in Ballouville, Alice was a devout Catholic. She was an outstanding seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and playing cards. She leaves her son Harry Vanasse of Dayville, 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Thelesphore, Meddie, Nelson, William, Arthur, Oxena, Rose Millard, Clara Vadnais.

Winnifred Rose LePire Davis
Winnifred Rose LePire Davis, of Pomfret, beloved wife of Walter Davis, died at the age of 93 on August 20, 2006.
She was active for many years at St. Phillips Church as treasurer of the vestry and member of the choir and of St. Elizabeth’s Circle. Upon graduating from Putnam High School in 1930, she became a secretary in the office at Belding Hemingway. After raising a family, she took the position of secretary in the headmaster’s office at Pomfret School. Retiring in 1975 after 25 years, she served as part time secretary to the Pomfret Superintendent of Schools. Many will remember the blazing zinnias and marigolds in her roadside garden on Route 44. She traveled several times in England, where her mother was born, and was an avid reader. Many examples of her exceptional crewel work are enjoyed by her family.
She is mourned by her son, Robert Davis, of Freedley Rd., and her daughters, Kathleen Davis of Mason, MI and Judith Miller of Branford. She leaves six grandchildren: Kathleen Miller of Middletown, Sharon Hogue of Putnam, David Hildebrandt of Mason, MI, William Hildebrandt of Lafayette, OR, Maureen Lane of Pomfret, and Scott Miller of Portland, ME. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren.

Martha E. Gaumond
Martha E. Gaumond, 73, of Maple Street, Danielson, formerly of North Grosvenordale, died Wednesday December 10, 2008 at the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home in Brooklyn. She was the beloved wife of 54 years of Richard M. Gaumond. She was born October 4, 1935 in Apollo, PA, daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Cogley) Wiser.
She had made her home in Danielson since 2001, moving from North Grosvenordale where she had made her home for many years. She enjoyed camping, sightseeing and had bowled many years at the Mohegan Lanes in Webster. he worked for over 20 years at the Guardian Glass in Webster as an inspector and five years for Pallflex in Putnam. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her husband Richard, she leaves her daughters: Barbara Girard of SC; Susan Colley of Putnam; Brenda Bennett of North Grosvenordale; Diana Gaumond of NY, brothers: Leroy Wiser of PA, William Wiser of PA, sisters: Evelyn Caldron of Putnam; Janet Barnes of Plainfield; Ruth Alman, of PA; Helen Reefer of PA, three grandsons.

Lois Evelyn McCarthy
Lois Evelyn McCarthy, 91, of Pomfret, died Saturday at the Westview Health Care Center in Dayville. She was the wife of the late William J. McCarthy, they were married in 1938, he died in 1988. She was born May 21, 1917 in Colrain, MA, daughter of the late John and Jennie (Flye) Bettencourt.
She was a graduate of the Putnam High School Class of 1935. She came to Pomfret at the age of eleven. She was an active member of the Abington Congregational Church and a member of the Women Guild of the Church. She was a charter member of the Betty Putnam Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she had served as matron. She was also a charter member of the Wolf Den Grange were she was active for many years. Lois enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking and enjoyed time with family and friends.
She leaves two daughters: Nancy Dougherty and her husband James of Pomfret Center; Joyce Brigham and her husband Ernest of Coventry, a sister: Ruth Hansen of Stoughton, MA; grandchildren: Megan Toal of Channel Island, Jersey, UK; James P. Dougherty of Seattle, WA; Chad Brigham of Holland, MA; Jamie Brigham of Alexandria, VA, great grandchildren: Katie Orchard and Zachary Bingham. She was predeceased by a grandson: Scott Sowter in 1996 and two brothers: Roger and Francis Bettencourt.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, January 3, 2009 (Saturday) at the Abington Congregational Church, Hampton Road (Rte 97) Abington.
