Dr. Wallace H. Harris, Ph.D.
Dr. Wallace H. Harris, Ph.D., age 77, of Ft. Pierce, FL and formerly of Waterford, CT, beloved husband of Evelyn (Edson) Harris, passed away Wednesday (March 27, 2013) in Vero Beach, FL.
Born June 26, 1935 in Brattleboro, VT, he was a son of the late Rupert and Virginia (Sanborn) Harris.
A native Vermonter, Wallace attended Lyndon State Teachers' College from 1953 to 1957. During those years Wally excelled in athletics, receiving varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and baseball. In 1957, Wallace received the Men's Athletic Award, being the first to letter in three sports in three years. Upon graduating, Wallace began his teaching career in Brattleboro, VT and continued his love of sports through coaching. An avid skier, Wally was a member of the Brattleboro Ski Patrol from 1959-1962. In 1963, Wally and his young family journeyed south to Waterford, CT. There he began a new chapter in his education career, teaching in Groton, Ledyard, and Waterford from 1963-1972. In 1969, Wally completed his Master in Science degree from Eastern CT State College. This led to a vice-principalship at Halls Hill Elementary School (K-5) in Colchester, CT from 1972-1976. Wally's next career achievement in Colchester was principal at Central Middle School / William J. Johnston Middle School from 1976-1992. While Principal, Wallace received his Doctorate Degree in Educational Management at the University of Bridgeport, CT in 1988. Throughout his years in education, Wallace promoted youth sports. In 1970-1972, he organized K-6 the Small Fry Wrestling Program in Waterford, and later was co-founder and first president of Waterford Soccer Club. After retiring, Wallace and Evelyn moved to sunny Fort Pierce, Florida. However, Wally continued to use his skills as an educator as he returned to his passion for science and learning. Wally volunteered at the Harbor Branch Oceanology Center and taught science classes at Indian River State College at Fort Pierce, FL. His zest for life and sense of adventure led Wally and Evelyn to running a travel agency called "Oh, the Places We Go." Living life to its fullest, Wally could easily be found improving his golf swing with Evelyn and his golf buddies, walking along the beach, or reading his favorite genre, historical fiction. Over his last 10 years, Wally discovered his talent as an artist. It is here that Wally's creative spirit found wings. Wally worked at his craft with discipline and found joy in drawing, especially the beautiful birds of Florida and lighthouses. His artwork has been displayed on t-shirts, hats, and mugs--a wonderful reminder to his friends and family of his creativity and love of nature. However, it was the time spent with his family and especially his eight grandchildren that brought the greatest joy to his life.
In addition to his loving wife of nearly 53 years, he leaves three children and their spouses, Timothy and Karen Harris of Byfield, MA, Deborah and Kenneth Goodale of Coventry, CT and Pamela and Donald Sullivan of Colchester, CT; eight grandchildren, Harrison, Samantha, Timothy, Hanna, Ryan, Molly, Holly and Haleigh; two siblings, Dorothy Jarvis of Wilmington, VT and Earl Harris of Vermont; and numerous extended family members and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edward, as well as his parents.
The family will receive guests starting at 10:30 AM Saturday (April 6th) at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, before a Chapel Service at 11 AM. Burial will be private.
Edward Joseph Taggart
Edward Joseph Taggart, 70, of Colchester, beloved husband of Evelyn (Standish) Taggart, passed away Tuesday (March 26, 2013) at the Middlesex Hospital, surrounded by his entire immediate family after a very courageous 17 year battle with M.S.
Born Nov. 23, 1942 in Hartford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Houra) Taggart.
Mr. Taggart was a 50 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 478, having worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic.
He enjoyed working with his hands, whether it be woodworking or restoring cars (his most proud accomplishment was the restoration of his father’s 1937 Sprint Car, which is on display at the Int’l Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, IA), and was an avid fan of racing and UCONN Basketball. His greatest joy was found in his family, especially following his children’s and grandchildren’s many activities.
He leaves his loving wife of 49 years, Evelyn; four children, Darrel of Colchester, Ronald and his companion, Lorry Rutland of East Haddam, Shelby and husband, Bryan Dowd of Colchester and Erin and husband, Tim Roberts of East Haddam; six grandchildren, Nick Taggart, Travis, Will and Brendan Dowd and Kelsey and Joey Roberts; two sisters, Gertrude and Marion; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of his Life will be held 2 to 5 PM Saturday (April 6th) at the Westchester Congregational Church, 449 Westchester Road, Colchester. There are no calling hours and burial will be private.

Mary Johannah Hathaway
Mary Johannah Hathaway, 76, of Colchester and formerly of Lebanon, widow of the late Carlton T. Hathaway, passed away Tuesday (March 26, 2013) at Apple Rehab in Cromwell.
Born in 1936 in Montville, she was the daughter of the late George and Alice (Burnham) Powell.
Along with her husband, Mary owned and operated a canvas shop for boats known as The Ship’s Locker, for many years before her retirement.
She was a member of the Westchester Congregational Church and the Friends of Cragin Library.
She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Marjorie Hathaway of Vermont; her sister, Alice Heiler of East Hartford; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Betty Hathaway of Vernon; four grandchildren, Chelsea, Anya, Morgan and Michael; her former daughter-in-law, Kerry McRae; a nephew, Robert Hathaway; and her dear friend, Marion Knight of Coventry.
Friends may call 10 AM Tuesday (April 2nd) at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. A Chapel Service will be observed at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery.

Yvette (Gaudette) Monroe
Yvette (Gaudette) Monroe, 82, of Marlborough and formerly of Bradenton, FL, widow of the late John E. Monroe, passed away Friday (March 22, 2013) at Middlesex Hospital.
Born April 17, 1930 in Hartford, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Doria (St. Pierre) Gaudette.
She was a devoted wife and mother who in her spare time enjoyed quilting. She was a member of St. John Fisher Church in Marlborough as well as the Marlborough Senior Center.
She leaves a daughter, Denise Martin of Dade City, FL; three sons, Dennis DeBonee of Marlborough, Ronald DeBonee of Lytle, TX and Joseph Monroe of Wolcott; two sisters, Gloria Mecteau of Hebron and Laurette Carpenter of Manchester; two brothers, Rodger Gaudette of East Hartford and Joseph Gaudette of Columbia; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends.
A Memorial Liturgy will be celebrated 10:30 AM Saturday (April 6th) at St. John Fisher Church, Jones Hollow Road, Marlborough. There are no calling hours and burial will be private.

William E. Anderson
William E. Anderson, 72, of No. Franklin and formerly of Colchester, passed away unexpectedly Friday (March 22, 2013) at the Wm. W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.
Born Sept. 27, 1940 in New Britain, he was a son of the late Chester and Olive (Hubbard) Anderson, Sr.
Mr. Anderson was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Native American Mohegans, Inc., where he was an Elder Council member – His tribal name was Talking Oak. He loved animals. Throughout his life, he was a porter at Mohegan Sun, and worked for Whittmore Poultry and Webster Poultry.
He leaves his wife, Patricia Anderson; five children, Lorraine Friend and Crystal, Robert, Steven and Michael Devost; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; longtime friend, Tom Yorz; housemates, John Pauch and Donald Yorz; siblings, Chester and Alberta Anderson, Roy and Pat Anderson, Harry Anderson, Roni Anderson, Ralph Anderson, Thomas Anderson, Terry Anderson, Edith Cornish and Ollie Davis;, and many loved nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Dickie and Lester Anderson.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM Tuesday (March 26th) at the Colchester Federated Church located at 60 Main St. (on the Green). Rendering of military honors will be observed. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich. There are no calling hours. Donations in his memory may be made to the Church.
Patricia A. (Fredette) DiBartolo
Patricia A. (Fredette) DiBartolo, 58, of Colchester and formerly of Franklin, NH, beloved wife of Anthony “Dave” DiBartolo, passed away Thursday (March 21, 2013) at the Wm. W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.
Born June 7, 1954 in Kittery, ME, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Evelyn (Downes) Fredette.
Pat was a Registered Certified Nurses Aide, working at Marlborough Health Care Center and prior to that for 30 years at Merrimack County Nursing Home in New Hampshire.
She loved children and in her spare time, enjoyed walking outdoors.
In addition to her loving husband of 14 years, she is survived by two daughters, Pennie Vigue and Erica Savage, both of Franklin, NH; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Rodegher and Kristin Hustus, both of Colchester; six grandchildren, Lucas Carpenter, Caleb and Braden Vigue, Bria and Devin Savage and Aiden Randall; three step grandchildren, Dante and Julian Rodegher and Sophie Hustus; three brothers, Robert, Richard and Gary Fredette, all of New Hampshire; and numerous extended family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant son, Richard Barney; and a sister, Jackie Pease.
A Memorial Service will be held 6 PM Wednesday (March 27th) at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. The family will receive guests starting at 5:30 PM. Timothy Dean Lewis
Timothy Dean Lewis, 51, of Colchester and formerly of East Hartford, beloved husband of Margaret “Meg” (Bauerschmidt) Lewis of 28 years, passed away Wednesday (March 20, 2013) after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 11, 1961 in Hartford, he was a son of Barbara (Penfield) Lewis of Colchester and the late Richard J. Lewis.
He was a 1979 graduate of East Hartford High and went on to study at SCSU, graduating in 1983.
Mr. Lewis dedicated his life to working in the field of special education, working with behaviorally challenged youth at the Manchester Regional Academy for 27 years before moving to Illing Middle School two years ago. He was recognized as Manchester’s Teacher of the Year in 1994. Meg and Tim were the first houseparents at the TLC Group Home in Manchester.
Tim held an avid love of the outdoors, from working in his yard to spending time at the beach. He also loved to work with his hands, especially reconstruction projects, birdhouses and house painting for many years.
His love, devotion and passion for his students was second only to that which he felt for his family.
He leaves his mother, his wife, two children, Jacob and Teagan; his brother and sister-in-law, Gerry and Ellen of Windham, NH; his sister-in-law, Marybeth of Colchester; Meg’s parents, Charles and Carol Bauerschmidt of Fairport, NY; her six siblings (whom he loved as his own); and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard P. Lewis.
The family will receive guests 5 to 8 PM Friday at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester.
The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday directly at St. Andrew Church, 128 Norwich Avenue, Colchester. Burial will be private.

Helen Patricia Churney
Helen Patricia Churney, 87, of Ft. Myers, FL and formerly of Colchester and East Haddam, widow of the late Joseph A. Churney, passed away Wednesday (March 13, 2013). born at home in Colchester on May 30, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Kazimier and Benedykta (Dyczewska) Olubowic.
She grew up in Colchester and attended Bacon Academy with the Class of 1943. She left school to help both her family and country in the war effort, working at Hamilton Standard.
Following her husband’s discharge from the Navy, they lived in Chicago for a time, where Helen worked assembling ballpoint pens by hand for the Eversharp Company before returning to Colchester.
She always kept busy - from running a garden market at home, peddling fruits and vegetables, helping with the horses, creating reproduction baskets, collecting antiques, traveling and working at the Central School cafeteria and Towne Auction Sales, but her main focus always remained on caring for her family. Mrs Churney moved to East Haddam in 1970. After her retirement, she moved to Ft. Myers, still returning to Connecticut to visit regularly. She traveled extensively, touring the country with her longtime companion Lawson Howatt.
Mrs. Churney was a Charter Member of the Adler-Boluck Post 6990 VFW Auxiliary in Colchester and a Lifetime Member of the Golden Age Passport traveling group.
She leaves two children, Joseph Churney and his wife Gail of East Haddam and April Wisutskie and her husband Ross of Raymond, ME; four grandchildren, Jenna Purdell, Brian Churney, and Stephen and Erik Wisutskie; five great grandchildren, Phoebe and Parker Churney, and Kaleigh, Mackenzie, and Andrew Purdell; her longtime companion, Lawson Howatt of Ft. Myers; a sister, Anna Raymond; and numerous nieces, nephews and long time friends.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Steven Olubowic; and five sisters, Katherine Raymond, Stella Bashiloff, Benedykta Wilcox, Patricia Lambert and Leona Butova.
Private graveside services will be observed later in the spring at the New St. Andrew Cemetery, Gillette’s Lane, Colchester. Linda Lee Lataille
Linda Lee Lataille, 68, of Columbia and formerly of Vernon, beloved wife of Robert, passed away Tuesday (March 12, 2013) at home, following a courageous battle with cancer. She passed in death as she walked through life, with a quiet grace and dignity.
Born March 2, 1945 in Tonawanda, NY, she was a daughter of the late Eldon and Clarice (Pfiefer) Elwell.
Linda worked as a Mortgage Originator for Rockville Bank for many years.
While raising her children in Vernon, she had volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and Linda loved sewing and decorative painting as well as singing with the Choir at the Church of the Holy Family in Hebron.
She will be forever remembered as the best pie maker around.
In addition to her loving husband of 47 1/2 years, she is survived by three children, Brian Lataille of Burbank, CA, Babette Sternat and her husband, Matthew of Columbia and Deanna Lataille of Wilmington, NC. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Noah, Emily and Hope Sternat, to whom she gave credit for her strength.
One of seven children, she is survived by Elaine Bock of Honeoye Falls, NY, Connie Schiffhauer of Batavia, NY, Paula Judd of Albion, NY, Cindy Culver of Batavia, NY and Charles Bush of Batavia, NY. She was predeceased by a brother, Neal Bush.
Linda also enjoyed her many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends; especially her dear friends, Mary and Lee Fiddler of Allen, MD and Gwen and Rick Reale of Lebanon, who were blessed by her love and kindness.

Sharon Margaret Shumski
Sharon Margaret Shumski, 69, of Colchester and formerly Hartford, passed away on March 11, 2013 at the Middlesex Hospital Hospice after an extended illness.
Born in Charlotte, NC on November 19, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Loren and Margaret (Lowandis) Penfield.
She married John J. Shumski on June 30, 1962. The couple raised their family in Hartford and retired in Colchester several years ago.
Sharon was a communicant of St. Andrew Church in Colchester. She was an avid flower gardener, talented crafter, knitter and painter. Most importantly, she will be remembered as a friend to all with a beautiful smile that would light up a room.
In addition to her loving husband of 50 years, she will be sadly missed but always remembered by three children, Peter A. Shumski of Colchester, John S. Shumski of Colchester, Denise P. Lovley of Arundel, ME; four siblings, Loren Penfield of Wethersfield, Jeanne Benet of Groton Long Point, Paula Tufaga of Hartford, Kristine Jenkins of S. Windsor; five grandchildren, Jason, Cassidy, Darren, Katelyn, Sarah; a great-grandson, Joseph; two beloved friends, Sheri and Amy; a devoted pet, Wilbur; and numerous extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was pre deceased by a brother, Sonny Pfermoder.
Friends may attend calling hours on Friday, March 15th from 5 – 7 PM at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home 167 Old Hartford Rd., Colchester. Gathering at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 AM followed by the Funeral Liturgy celebrated at 11 AM at St. Andrew Church, Colchester. Burial will be in New St. Andrew Cemetery.
