FRANK A. BERARDUCCI

Frank A. Berarducci, 88, of Plainville, died Aug. 28 at New Britain General Hospital.

Born in Plainville and a lifelong resident, had had been employed for many years at General Electric, retiring 28 years ago.

He was a charter member (50 years) of the Improved Order of Redman, Pequabuck Tribe #74 and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Church.

He is survived by a sister, Annmarie (Mary) Berarducci, of Plainville; a brother, Albert L. and his wife, Mary Berarducci, of Plainville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lucy Berarducci, and three brothers, Andrew D. Berarducci, Peter P. Berarducci and John C. Berarducci.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 2 at Farrell Funeral Home, New Britain, with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

STEFAN HAWRON

Stefan Hawron, 73, of Plainville, died with his family by his side on Dec. 24.

He was the husband of Patricia (Gherzi) Hawron.

He was born in Hartford on June 9, 1930, the son of the late Stefan and Anna (Bruszynska) Hawron.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

A longtime Plainville resident, he was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church and the EAA Aviation Foundation.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Marie Greeson of Delta, Ala., Linda Major of Anniston, Ala., and Sharon Amos of Southington; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his sister, Ann Andrews.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 27 from Bailey Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to: University of Connecticut Cancer Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington 06032.

ALICE GIANNETTINO

Alice (O'Dea) Giannettino, 94, of Plainville, died on Dec. 25 at the Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home, New York.

She was born in Hartford on March 2, 1909, the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Flynn) O'Dea.

She attended Plainville and Bristol schools, and was a graduate of the St. Francis School of Nursing, before working at the Institute of Living in Hartford.

She was the wife of the late Louis U. Giannettino Jr.

She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Ivan Wood of Plainville; a daughter, Mary Louise Farrell of New York; a son, William Giannettino; and two granddaughters, Alicia and Kathryn Farrell.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Dec. 30 at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Bailey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

VINCENT D. MERCADANTE

Vincent Dominic Mercadante, 80, of Plainville, husband of Viola (Lastocy) Mercadante for 54 years, died on Dec. 26 at New Britain General Hospital with his family at his side after a long battle with a spinal cord injury.

Born in Worcester, the son of the late Dominic and the late Antoinette (DiConza) Mercadante, he graduated from North High School, began his studies at Boston University to pursue a degree in music education until he enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was attached to the 322nd Company Wing, 9th Army Air Force.

He served 22 months in the European Theatre and took part in five major battles and campaigns before his discharge in 1945.

Upon his graduation from Boston University in 1948 he began teaching music in New Britain at Washington Junior High School, and later became assistant to the director of music, teaching instrumental music in the elementary schools.

He was the co-founder and director of the Summer Music Workshop, and a part-time music instructor at both Mooreland Hill School, Kensington, and Central Connecticut State University.

He received a master's degree and certificate of advanced graduate study in school administration/supervision from the University of Hartford and was principal of Elihu Burritt School and Smalley Elementary School before his retirement in 1992.

He received many honors including recognition for New Britain's Early Intervention Program by the U.S. Department of Education and named one of the top three elementary school principals in the state of Connecticut by the Elementary and Middle Schools Principals Association.

He was also business manager and an instrumentalist in the New Britain Symphony, conductor of the Hardware City Band, the J.C. Lentini Memorial Concert Band and the Hartford City Insurance Band and played his tuba and trombone in various bands.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Plainville, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #511, Disabled Veterans, American Legion Post #33, Amateur Radio Relay League, Plainville Golf League and was a past president and secretary of the New Britain Evening Lions Club, which honored him as a recipient of the Melvin Jones, Knights of the Blind and Lion of the Year awards.

He was a director and corporator of The New Britain Boys' and Girls' Club, and a board member of Catholic Family Services, the New Britain YMCA and the Salvation Army.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Madeline and Keith Coakley of South Windsor; two sons, Steve and Dave; a son and daughter-in-law, Vincent Mercadante Jr., and his wife, Louis Anne, of Plainville; a brother and sister-in-law, Nicholas and Frances Mercadante; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and James Forbes of North Conway, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 30 at Porter's Funeral Home, Kensington, followed by a funeral liturgy at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Burial with full military honors followed in St. Joseph Cemetery.

BETTY J. HOFFMANN

Betty J. Hoffmann, 84, of Southington, died Dec. 23 at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden.

She was the wife of the late Arthur Hoffmann.

She was born in Hartford May 2, 1919, the daughter of the late Irving and Etta (Hamlin) Johnson and lived in Plainville for 40 years before moving to Southington.

She was an executive secretary at the Wheeler Regional YMCA for 17 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of the Hannah Woodruff Chapter, having served as a former regent and a member of the First Baptist Church, Southington.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Aletta and Paul Spielman of Canterbury, and Diane Swindell of Sturbridge, Mass.; one grandson, Mathew Spielman; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Jan. 10, 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church.

Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

PHILIP ROBERGE

Philip Roberge, 85, of Plainville, died on Dec. 24 at New Britain General Hospital.

Born in Quebec, he lived most of his life in New Britain moving to Plainville 18 years ago and had resided at the Plainville Health Care for the past three years.

He was the husband of the late Suzanne (Bourassa) Roberge.

He was employed at New Britain Tool and Die for many years and retired from Pratt and Whitney.

He was a 50-year member of the St. Jean the Baptist Society, a very active member of the Plainville Senior Citizens Center and a World War II veteran.

He is survived by a daughter, Gloria Kelaher, of Farmington; a son, Gilbert Roberge, of New Britain; two brothers, Roger and his wife, Nancy Roberge, and Marcel and his wife, Noela Roberge, all of New Britain; two grandchildren, Patrick and William Kelaher; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rachel Roberge; a sister, Ernestine Miron; and two brothers, Gilles and Armand Roberge.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 30 at the Farrell Funeral Home, New Britain, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. John the Evangelist Church.

Burial followed in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain.

Farrell Funeral Home, New Britain, was in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHEA THAYER

Dorothea (Thomasen) Thayer, 86, formerly of Plainville, died on Dec. 19 in Avon.

She was the wife of Richard Thayer.

Born on Nov. 7, 1917 in North Attleboro, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Pomelia (Adam) Thomasen.

A Plainville resident most of her life she was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served as the organist for many years.

She also was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Bakerville, Plainville Historical Society, Literary Club, board member of the Plainville Public Library as well as a board member of the Plainville Nursing Association.

She worked at New Departure, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and New Britain General Hospital where she was the floor secretary.

In addition to her husband, she leaves three children, Judith and her husband, Richard Rosum, of Stamford; Richard and his wife, Nancy Thayer, of Isle la Motte, Vt.; David Thayer of Plymouth, Mass.; a daughter-in-law, Terri Thayer of Bristol; three grandchildren, Gregory Rosum of Massachusetts, Andrea Rosum of California and Deborah Thayer of Vermont; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Christopher Rosum of Massachusetts.

She was predeceased by two brothers, John and William Thomasen.

Funeral services were on held Dec. 23 at First Baptist Church.

Burial followed in West Cemetery.

Bailey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

HELEN BIERNAT

Helen (Zdunczyk) Biernat, of Broad Street, died on Dec. 27 at the Reservoir Harborside Health Care Facility, West Hartford.

She was the wife of John Biernat.

Born March 20, 1914 in Southington, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Zdunczyk.

She was a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church, Southington,

Besides her husband, she is survived by a brother, Chester Zdunczyk, of New Britain; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and Frank Zdunczyk, and two sisters, Stella Dutrizac and Anna Frankowski.

The funeral was held on Dec. 31 at Immaculate Conception Church.

Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery.

DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington, was in charge of arrangements.

Donations in Biernat's memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
