Nancy Elenore Gardner
Nancy Elenore Gardner, 80, a Greenwich native of Charlotte, N.C., died on April 1, 2009 at The Laurels in Highland Creek in Charlotte.
She was born Nov. 10, 1928, the daughter of Pasquale and Angelina Lampo Calabro. Gardner was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Charlotte.
Surviving are her daughter, Janice Gardner Plyler and son-in-law, Jonathan Plyler; a grandson, James "Jake" Gardner Plyler; a sister, Josephine Palastro of Greenwich; a brother, John Calabro of Milford, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, James H. Gardner Jr., and a brother, Patrick Calabro.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on April 6 at Sacred Heart Church in Greenwich, and burial services followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Shepherd's Center of Charlotte, 3115 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211.
Elizabeth Lawson
Elizabeth "Liz" Lawson, of Greenwich, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2009. She was a hockey, soccer and gymnastics mother.
Lawson is survived by her husband, Duncan Lawson, and her family, Scott Lawson, Ross Lawson, Callum Lawson and Emma Lawson; her mother, Jean Campbell, and sister Helen Andrews.
A service of remembrance was held on April 9 at Second Congregational Church, Greenwich. The Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home in Greenwich handled the arrangements.

Mary C. Quinn
Mary C. Lynch Quinn, 89, former Greenwich and Throgs Neck, N.Y., resident, died at home in Marblehead, Mass., following a lengthy illness.
The daughter of John and Irene Devine Lynch, Quinn was born in New York City, where she lived for several years before her family settled in Throgs Neck.
Following graduation from Cathedral High School in 1938, she went to work at Union Carbide in the accounting dept. In 1944, she married the late Martin H. Quinn, and the couple moved to Greenwich in 1954, where they raised their family.
An avid golfer and swimmer with a sense of humor, Quinn was a member of the Tamarack Country Club as well as the Westchester Country Club. Her family summered in the Hamptons, where she was also a member of South Fork Country Club and the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. She also enjoyed singing.
She is survived by a daughter, Catherine Quinn and her husband, Stephen Kauffman, of Marblehead; three grandchildren, Katie, Mary and Emily Kauffman of Marblehead; her caregiver and niece, Mary Lynch of Marblehead; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Martin H. Quinn; two sons, U.S. Navy Lt., Jg. Martin Quinn and Arthur Quinn; three brothers, Arthur, Edward and James Lynch; and a sister, Irene Hewitt.
Her funeral was held on April 4 in St. Francis de Chantal in Bronx, N.Y.

John W. Sloat
John W. Sloat, 50, of Naugatuck, an actor in many touring companies, died on March 28, 2009.
The son of the late James and Mary Garrish Sloat, he was born in Greenwich on Dec. 30, 1958. He had a passion for music, enjoyed travel, playing the piano and Broadway shows.
Sloat is survived by his longtime companion, Jonathan Walker; three brothers: Richard Sloat of Fairfield, Garrish Sloat of Norwalk and Michael Sloat of Stratford; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Linda Hyland, and a brother, Thomas Sloat.

Philo Smith
Philo Smith of Greenwich, 81, founder of Philo Smith & Co, Inc., of Stamford, died of severe pneumonia on April 1, 2009 at Stamford Hospital.
Born Nov. 13, 1927, in New York City, he was the son of Snell Smith, publicity director for the Republican National Committee, and Anna MacKenzie Smith, daughter of the headmaster of the Lawrenceville School.
A graduate of Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., Smith received a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1948. While at Yale, he was the manager of the New York Times student sales agency and a member of the varsity track team as a half-miler. He was a holder of the Yale Lawrenceville scholarship in college.
Smith received an MBA from the New York University Graduate School of Business Administration, now called the Stern School, where he received the Marcus Nadler Key for the highest standing in banking and finance.
Smith started his career in the investment business as a junior analyst at Lord Abbett & Co. "when the Dow Jones was about 180." He then went with the J. Henry Schroeder Banking Corp. as an investment analyst and became assistant treasurer of International Holding Ltd., a closed-end investment company.
In 1958, he moved to Dominick & Dominick as a full-time insurance stock specialist, leaving there in 1962 to found the investment banking firm in Stamford that bears his name. The company has become one of the leading insurance stock specialty firms in the United States, serving clients in the U.S. and overseas.
Smith is the author of numerous articles and texts on the insurance business. He was a founding member of the New York Society of Insurance and Financial Analysts, and was honored as a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts for more than 50 years.
A Greenwich resident since 1954, Smith was a former member of the RTM and the Greenwich Republican Town Committee, and was a longtime member of the Stanwich Club. He was a member of the Pilgrims of the United States, of which his father was also a member, and was a lifelong member of the Yale Club of New York City.
He was formerly a member of the Heights Casino, Brooklyn; the Downtown Athletic Club, New York; the Union League Club, of which his father was also a member; the Field Club, Greenwich; and the Sankaty Head Club, Nantucket.
Smith was a longtime runner and a recognized figure in local races, participating in events up to 10K into his 70s. He was a member of the Greenwich Roadhogs Running Club.
Smith is survived by his wife, Andie, and three sons, Gregory N. Smith of Peekskill, N.Y., a school administrator; Jonathan C. Smith of Ridgefield, an independent investor; and Adam T. Smith of San Francisco, proprietor of Fog City News. A fourth son, Timothy T. Smith, predeceased him. He is also survived by two stepdaughters, Victoria Kindred Keziah of Boulder, Colo., and Dr. Amanda Kindred of Boston; seven grandchildren, the oldest of whom, Robert C. Smith of Norwalk is past president of Touchpoint Securities; and by one great-granddaughter.
Smith took pleasure in the fact that three generations of his family were active in the investment business at the same time.
A memorial service was held at Christ Church in Greenwich on April 7.
Elaine Waters
Elaine A. Mauger Waters, 81, of Stamford, a former Old Greenwich resident and Greenwich High School history teacher, died on March 27, 2009 at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford.
Born in Blackwood, N.J., she was the daughter of Louis and Alma Anderson Mauger. Waters received an undergraduate degree from Barnard College in 1948 and a master's degree from Fairfield University in 1967.
Waters taught history at Greenwich High from 1965-7 and at Low Heywood School, now King & Low Heywood School, for 25 years before her retirement in 1992.
She lived in Old Greenwich for 15 years before moving to Stamford 41 years ago.
Waters was a longtime volunteer at the New Canaan Library and a volunteer lecturer for history courses at Lapham Senior Center in New Canaan. She was also a member of the Garden Center of New Canaan.
She is survived by three daughters: Nancy Elisabeth Waters, Ellen Waters Sclafani of Vero Beach, Fla., and Julie Waters Robinson of Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren: Dana Waters Sclafani, Paul Ross Sclafani, Asher Waters Robinson and Samuel Waters Robinson. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph E. Waters Jr.
A reception honoring Waters was held on April 8 at The Royal Green in Stamford with a private burial in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, R.I.

Elizabeth M. Willis
lizabeth "Bette" Marie Mills Willis, 87, a Greenwich native and longtime resident, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2009.
Willis was born on Jan. 23, 1922 to John F. Mills III and Mae D. Mills, and was raised by her granduncle, Arthur Russell Wilcox, one of the founders of the Westchester Country Club. She traced her ancestry to a great-great-great grandfather who was born in Greenwich in 1768. Her grandparents were Lillian Lyon Wilcox Mills and John F. Mills II.
Willis worked as a public relations executive for Saks Fifth Avenue, and was an active member of the Round Hill Community Church, where she also served as a trustee.
She was also active in the Greenwich Historical Society and was a regent of the Putnam Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also served as president of the National League of American Pen Women.
She and her late husband, E. Sidney Willis, were longtime members of the Belle Haven Club, and both were avid tennis players. Together, they were instrumental in the fund-raising and restoration of the lighthouse on Great Captains Island.
She is survived by her three children, Russell Berry of San Francisco, Betsy Mills Berry of Quogue, N.Y., and Christopher Berry of Greenwich; and three grandchildren: Hillary Gregga Miller and Elizabeth Bickford of Manhattan and Kate Berry of San Francisco.
A memorial service will be held on April 13 at 2 p.m. at the Round Hill Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions for a memorial designation at Round Hill Community Church.
Margaret Guiffra
Margaret "Maggie" Guiffra, 79, a Greenwich native, died on May 3, 2009 surrounded by her family.
Guiffra was born on May 6, 1929 in Greenwich to William and Lucy Fulton Wilkinson. She was a graduate of Greenwich High School and worked for D.W. Rogers in the Linen Department for many years. She also worked for The Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), which provided a variety of services including classroom training, on-the-job training, work experience, and job search and placement assistance.
In December 2008, she celebrated 60 years of marriage to her husband, Felix J. Guiffra, Sr. Guiffra was affiliated with many programs in the community: CCI, the Hamilton Ave. School PTA, where she was president for many years; the Armstrong Court Association and The River House. She enjoyed playing bingo, shopping for "knickknacks," traveling with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Felix J. Guiffra Jr. and his wife Ellie of Greenwich; a daughter, Mary Schacter and her husband John of Greenwich; and six grandchildren: Kristin Guiffra Velazquez and her husband Luis, Felix J. Guiffra III, Philip Schacter, Michael Schacter, William Schacter and Paul Schacter. She was predeceased by a brother; David Wilkinson.
Funeral services were held on May 6 at Christ Church Chapel in Greenwich. Entombment followed in St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich.

Dorothy Halligan Larson
Dorothy Halligan Larson, 80, Greenwich native, died on May 2, 2009.
She was born on Nov. 11, 1928 to Joseph and Anna Halligan. She moved to Boca Raton Fla. in 1984 with her late husband, G. Richard Larson.
Larson is survived by her three daughters: Patricia L. DeLeo and her husband Frank; Karin L. Longstreth; and Linda L. Warzoha and her husband Bruce. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Scott, Alison, Bruce, Lauren, Jennifer, Kristi and Kate; and two great- grand-daughters, Anna and Alexa. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Halligan, and a sister, Ann H. Farrell. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Byram.

Anthony G. Lauricella
Anthony G. Lauricella, 81, U.S. Army veteran and lifelong Greenwich resident, died on May 1, 2009 at Greenwich Hospital.
He was born on March 25, 1928 in Greenwich to Anunziata and Antonio Lauricella. He graduated from Greenwich High School and Fordham University, then earned a law degree at Hartford Law School (now the University of Connecticut School of Law) in 1953.
Lauricella served in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1955, then practiced law for over 50 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he was a former past Grand Knight, as well as the Greenwich RTM, the St. Mary Church Council and the St. Mary Church choir. He was also on the board of Sunnyhill Children's Center and Greenwich Family Center for many years.
He loved fishing, gardening, bowling and spending time with his family.
Lauricella is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia T. Lauricella; and six children: Kenneth A. Lauricella, William J. Lauricella, Diane L. Piro, Ginger L. Lusa , Valerie P. Wuchert, and Carolyn L. Siclari. He is also survived by his three sisters, Elsie L. Rader, Santina L. Dennis, and Marie L. Krumeich, and 11 grandchildren: Kimberly and Matthew Piro, Rachel, Christine and Daniel Lauricella, Amy and Kathryn Lusa, Ashley and Nicholas Lauricella, Katie and Allie Siclari. Lauricella was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and John, and a sister, Catherine Lauricella Spiers.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on May 5 at St. Mary R.C. on Greenwich Ave. and entombment followed in St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich.

Mary A. Massi
Mary A. Massi, 86, a Greenwich native and lifelong resident, died on April 29, 2009.
Massi was born in Greenwich on April 18, 1923 to Charles and Jennie Roina. She worked for the Greenwich Country Day School in Food Service for 20 years. She was active in both her community and St. Roch's Church, where she was a lifelong parishioner.
She also enjoyed playing bingo, and was especially devoted to her family.
Massi is survived by her two sons, Joseph Massi, Jr. and his wife Kathy of White Plains, N.Y.; Patrick Massi and his wife Judy of Greenwich; a sister, Susan Lofaro of Trumbull; and six grandchildren: Joseph Massi III, Vanessa Hickey, Michelle Tighe, Colleen Massi, Patrick Massi Jr., and Sean Massi. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Julia Hickey, Caroline Hickey, Patrick Tighe, Jr., and Joseph Massi IV. Massi was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Massi, Sr. in 1993 as well as a brother, Rocco Roina and a sister, Lucie Butte.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on May 2 at St. Roch Church in Greenwich. Interment followed in St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich.
Peter A. Rubel
Peter A. Rubel, 84, died on April 28, 2009 at his home in Fillmore, Calif.
Rubel was born Aug. 22, 1914 in Zurich, Switzerland. After attending university in Switzerland, he continued his studies at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business. He then worked for Rusch and Company in New York City, where he met Elizabeth "Betty" Hunt. They married in 1941 and moved to Greenwich, where they raised their family and lived for 36 years before retiring to Fillmore, Calif. in 1979. Rubel worked at Rancho Camulos in Piru until his death.
He is survived by a brother, Hans Ulrich Rubel of Zurich, Switzerland; his son Edward and daughter-in-law Earline of Harwichport, Mass.; and three daughters: Barbara Pratley of Greenwich; Susan Rubel of Maynard, Mass. and Liz Rubel of Santa Paula, Calif. He is also survived by a niece, Ashley Rehner and her husband, Dan, of Gloucester, Mass.; five grandsons: Peter Pratley, Philip Pratley, Tim Rubel, James Rubel, and Ian Palmer; and three great-grandsons: Ben, Sean and Danny Pratley.
A memorial service celebrating Peter's long life will be held at Santa Paula Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. today.

Edith M. Samuelsen
Edith M. Samuelsen, 95, a 28-year resident of Greenwich, died at the Nathaniel Witherell Home on April 29, 2009.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on Oct. 7, 1913 to Wilhelm and Hanna Petersen Olsen and was once a model for the renowned artist Winold Reiss. She was also the model for one of the figures in the Mosaic Mural in the rotunda at Union Terminal in Cincinnati, Ohio. She moved to Greenwich in 1980.
She is survived by her two daughters, Lois-Ann Glatzel and her husband Richard of Whitestone, N.Y. and Betty-Lou Walsh of Copake, N.Y., six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roy Olsen of Naples, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Samuelsen.

Carmelita Lanza Schimenti
Carmelita Lanza Schimenti, 84, former classical ballerina and Broadway performer, died on April 28, 2009 in Greenwich Hospital after a 13-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born in Kirksville, Missouri on March 23, 1925 to Joseph and Cynthia Lanza. Schimenti became enchanted with ballet when she was very young, setting her sights on the stages of Manhattan, and worked hard enough to make her vision a reality.
At age 10, accompanied by her grandmother, she began her studies at the Chicago Conservatory and later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Schimenti danced for the famous choreographer, George Balanchine of the New York City Ballet, who was impressed enough with her performance that he autographed a photo and wrote how much he admired her talent and determination.
Schimenti went on to perform in the Lerner & Lowe Broadway production of "Paint Your Wagon" as well as "Annie Get Your Gun", "Bloomer Girl", "Finian's Rainbow" and "Oklahoma". She would practice and perform, often with bleeding feet, with a joy and exuberance that can only come from the connection of one's talent and their dreams come true.
When she met her future husband, S.G. "Ted" Schimenti, at a show opening party at Sardis in New York, she was performing on Broadway at night and in television studios during the day for programs like the "Lawrence Welk Show."
She married Schimenti at St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1953 and had a reception in the Garden Room at the Plaza Hotel. She raised two sons, George and John, and after seeing them through their college years, resumed her education at Sarah Lawrence College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in art history in 1980.
When Schimenti joined a quiet gathering, friends and family recall that the room seemed to change in an instant and the dreariest of people became lively and outgoing. Her impression was so fond that an acquaintance rarely became a mere passing. They will remember her as a beautiful woman whose inner radiance touched and lifted all who knew her.
Karl E. Schoeller
Karl E. Schoeller, 74, longtime Greenwich resident, died on April 28, 2009 in Vero Beach, Fla.
He was born in White Plains, N.Y., resided most of his life in Greenwich, and for the past 11 years wintered in Vero Beach.
Schoeller graduated from the Loomis School in 1953 and was an English Speaking Union Scholar at Brighton College in England from 1953 to 1954. He received his bachelor's degree from Williams College in 1958, and attended his 50th class reunion in Williamston last June.
In his youth, he taught sailing at The Riverside Yacht Club and The Belle Haven Club during the summer. He competed in the Newport to Bermuda Race in 1972 on Jim Grant's boat, Irina.
Schoeller retired from The First Boston Corporation in New York City, and then became a realtor for Prudential Connecticut Realty in Greenwich.
He was a member of The Round Hill Club and
The Horseneck Club, The Moorings Club in Vero Beach, the Williams Alumni Vero Beach Chapter. He enjoyed volunteering as a Red Baron at The Greenwich Hospital.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Marcia O'Donnell Schoeller of Greenwich and Vero Beach; a daughter, Mildred Boyd Schoeller of Delray Beach, Fla.; a son, Karl Christian Schoeller of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Christopher N. Snyder of Boston, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Alexandra C. Snyder of West Palm Beach, Fla. and two grandchildren, Coco and Lilly Schoeller of West Palm Beach.
