Emil T. Brayfield

Emil Theodore Brayfield, 86, of Kiefer Road, Southington, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at home. He was the husband of 54 years of Erika (Ruppel) Brayfield.

Born June 9, 1921, in Southington, to the late Julius and Johanna (Hoff) Brayfield, he had been a lifelong Southington resident. Mr. Brayfield served his country during World War II as a technician fifth grade in Service Company of the 712th Tank Battalion. He participated in five major campaigns in European Theater of Operations in: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, landing on Utah Beach on June 28, 1944 as part of the 1st Army under General Omar Bradley and attached to the 90th Infantry, 3rd Army under command of General Patton through France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. Mr. Brayfield worked for James T. Kay in Meriden before retiring in 1986, and was a life member of the First Lutheran Church of Southington.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three sons and their wives, David and Kathy Brayfield of Southington, Mark and Sharon Brayfield of Ohio, and Gary and Donna Brayfield of Southington; a brother, Robert Brayfield of Florida; a sister, Hildred Renn of Southington; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary, Kelly, Amanda, Cassondra, Logan and Jordan; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a son, Ronald Brayfield.

Services were held June 2 from Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home to First Lutheran Church, Southington. Burial, with full military honors, followed in South End Cemetery.

Sandra M. Dahlstrom

Sandra M. Kogelman Dahlstrom, 66, of Southington, formerly of New Britain, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 31, 2008, after a brief illness. She was the wife of 43 years of David C. Dahlstrom. She was the daughter of Mary (Pauloz) Kogelman and the late William J. Kogelman.

Mrs. Dahlstrom was an accountant, having worked for many years at Joseph Krar and Associates. She also volunteered at The Vance School, while her children were in school.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by a son, Jeffrey Dahlstrom, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie Ryan; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Stephen Noel; four grandchildren, Kyle, Alex and Colby Noel and Abigail Dahlstrom; a sister, Vicki Kogelman, and brother-in-law, Mark Adams Griswold; two nephews, Kyle Adams Griswold and Ryan Williams Griswold; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces.

Services were held June 3 at Rose Hill Funeral Home, Rocky Hill. Burial followed in Rose Hill Memorial Park.

William "Dizzy" F. Derwin

SFC (RET) William Francis "Dizzy" Derwin, 67, of Whitlock Avenue, Plantsville, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at The Hospital of Central Connecticut at Bradley Memorial, Southington. He was the husband of Nancy (Hall) Derwin.

He was born in Hartford, Feb. 13, 1941, the son of the late Francis and Johanna (Murphy) Derwin. Mr. Derwin was an enlisted soldier in the Connecticut National Guard for over 38 years; a full time federal technician for over 31 years; and was an active participant driver of the 1st and 2nd Company of the Governor's Horse and Foot Guard. He was also a life member of the American Legion Kiltonic Post No. 72.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three children, William Jerome Derwin, Donna Marie Derwin, and Raymond Armand Derwin and his wife, Erin, all of Southington; two grandchildren, William Francis Derwin and Taylor Mackenzie Derwin; two brothers, John Derwin of Windsor Locks, and Francis Derwin Jr. of West Hartford; a sister, Anne Greene of Windsor Locks; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Jane McDermott, and two nephews, Patrick D. McDermott and James W. McDermott.

Services were held June 3 at St. Aloysius Church, Plantsville. Burial, with full military honors, was in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington, was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert P. Leonard

Herbert Peter Leonard, 83, of Round Hill Road, Southington, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Newington Health Care. He was the husband of Pauline (Bukowski) Leonard.

He was born May 25, 1924 in West Caldwell, N.J. to the late Russell and Mae (Burns) Leonard. He had been a long time resident of Cheshire, before moving to Southington in 1974. Mr. Leonard worked for Pratt & Whitney as a technical planner, before retiring 20 years ago. He served his country during World War II in the Naval Air Force 50th Squadron B-24 Bomber Group. He was an excellent golfer and bowler.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Russell Leonard and his wife, Marilyn, of Plantsville; his daughters, Kathleen Restorff and her husband, James, of Maryland, and Diane Lemire and her husband, Tom, of Southington; a sister, Vernalyn Bliss of Florida; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services were held May 29 at Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Betty A. O'Brien

Betty (Allen) O'Brien, 87, of Zwicks Farm Road, Plantsville, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Fredrick Patrick O'Brien.

Born May 16, 1921, in Medford, Mass., to the late Thomas Edward and Jean (Allen) Brownlowd, she had been a longtime Southington resident. Mrs. O'Brien was a devoted homemaker, ceramist and a breeder of miniature poodles.

She is survived by two sons, Craig Allen O'Brien, of Plantsville, and Bruce Stephen O'Brien and his wife, Diane, of Ivoryton; a daughter, Sandra Jean (O'Brien) Chadis, and her husband, John Mark,. of Newton Centre, Mass.; four grandchildren, Bruce O'Brien Jr. and Tina O'Brien, both of Ivoryton, and Alex and Lucy Chadis, both of Newton Centre, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Caroline Olson.

There were no services and burial was private in South End Cemetery. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann, of Guilford, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of the late Pauline (Beshuk) Schumann.

He was born Aug. 3, 1917 in Middlebury, the son of the late Charles and Adelaide (Sims) Schumann. A former resident of Southington, he was a retired postmaster. A strong athlete and avid sports fan, he maintained his interest in all sports, especially those of his great-grandsons, Austin and Kyle Richard, of Guilford, who survive him, along with his daughter and her husband, Barbara and Dr. Roger Richard; his grandson, Robert Richard; and his granddaughter, Kate Richard, of Clinton. He was predeceased by his brothers Charles "Chic", Elwood "Woody"; and sisters, Caroline and Kay.

Services were held June 5 at St. George Catholic Church, Guilford. Guilford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John E. Steczkowski Jr.

John E. Steczkowski Jr., 26, beloved son of John and Jadwiga (Garbowski) Steczkowski, of Plantsville, passed away on Sept. 16, 2007 at Hartford Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born in New Britain and moved to Plantsville. He attended St. Thomas Catholic School, John F. Kennedy Middle School, Southington High School, Porter & Chester Institute, and at the time of his death, was attending New England Technical Institute, where he was studying to be an electrician. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Plantsville, where he served many years as an altar boy. He enjoyed life, especially time spent with family and friends, and he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and ATV. His genuine smile was always seen and his presence known when he entered a room, he will always be remembered and dearly missed by all who knew him.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister, Monika Steczkowski; his maternal grandmother, Theresa Burak of New Britain; his paternal grandmother, Czeslawa Garbowski of New Britain; four aunts: Maria Komorowski, her husband, Matthew, and their children, Christopher, Nicholas and Erik, all of New Britain; Wendy Choinski and her husband, Chester, of Newington, their daughter, Agnes Corr and her husband, Matt, and their son, Jerry Choinski; Janina Shorey and her husband, Claude, of Plantsville, and their daughter, Joanna Koza; Halina Zaleski and her husband, Kazimierz, of New Britain, and their child in Poland; his uncle, Bogdan Garbowski and his wife, Danuta, of Poland, and their daughter, Iwona Krutu and her husband, Jarek, of New Britain; and his girl­friend, Jodi Abramczyk.

Services were held Sept. 21, 2007 from New Britain Memorial­ Sagarino Funeral Home to Sacred Heart Church, New Britain. Burial will followed Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain.

Salvatore Trotta

Salvatore Trotta, 66, of Southington, died peacefully, at home, Tuesday, May 27, 2008. He was the husband of Annette (Nuzzolillo) Trotta.

Born in New Haven on April 26, 1942, he was the son of the late Frank and Fannie (Delucia) Trotta. He enjoyed riding bicycles and following the stock market. He was a member of the Garden St. Athletic Club in New Haven.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Alicia Whitney of Florida, Jonathan Trotta and his wife, Eriko, of Guilford, Meredith Trotta and her husband, Daniel Parzych, of Ridgefield, and Tina Riccio and her husband, Michael, of Southington; a sister, Roberta Trotta of New Haven; and eight grandchildren, Anthony, Grace, Sophia, Lucca, Lily, Aria, Francesca and George.

A memorial service was held June 1 at DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington.

Robert E. Langevin

Robert E. Langevin, 64, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., formerly of Plantsville, died April 29 , 2008.

He was born, Sept. 3, 1943, in Meriden, and was the son of the late William and Rita (DeChamp) Langevin. Mr. Langevin had been employed by Bruce Manufacturing for 21 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his daughters, Rita Langevin of Southington, Celen Ste. Marie of Erie, PA., Lisa and Tammy Langevin, both of Southington, and Brenda Sukatski of Wolcott; three brothers, Dennis Langevin of Southington, William Langevin of Meriden and Scott Langevin of N.J.; two stepsisters, Cindy Costello and Kim Bonk, both of Southington; three stepbrothers, John and Gary Lacomb, of South Meriden, and James LaComb, of Southington; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Gilbert, Russell and Albert Langevin; and a stepbrother, Albert LaComb.

The services, with military honors, were held May 12 at DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Joseph Matczak

Joseph Matczak, 50, of Lowery Drive in Southington, died Friday, May 9, 2008.

He was born Aug. 4, 1957, the son of Glenda (Shubert) Matczak and the late Joseph Matczak. He had been employed by Colt Manufacturing in West Hartford for 25 years and was active in the Colt Manufacturing Union committee. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He loved fishing, camping, the outdoors and was an avid N.Y. Giants and N.Y. Yankees fan. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and was a great cook. Friends and family will miss his comical ability to make people laugh.

Besides his mother, he is survived by a brother, John Matczak, of Southington; two sisters, Susan Bard and her husband, Tony, of Plantsville, and Linda Briggs and her husband, Steven, of Southington; several nieces and nephews; and a great-nephew.

Services were held May 13 from DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington, to Immaculate Conception Church. Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery.

Mr. Matczak was a cancer survivor, his family would ask that donations be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave. Meriden, CT 06450-1004.

Marie L. Daher

Marie L. Daher, 76, a Green-wich resident, died on June 21. She was a member of the Greenwich Senior Center, "Greats." She is survived by a daughter, Gabriella Pannunzio of Greenwich, and a son, Maron Daher of Eastchester, N.Y. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary R.C. Church, and interment was private. The Castiglione Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations: Parkin-son's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.

John J. Dowling

John Joseph Dowling, 103, a Greenwich resident for 67 years, died June 14 at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home. born Dec. 6, 1902 in Cooraaghan Killeshin, County Laois, Ireland, he was the son of the late Martin and Bridget Connolly Dowling. He served in the U.S. Army and was a United States Merchant Marine for many years. He was a parishioner of St. Mary Church.

Dowling is survived by a sister, Elizabeth "Ciss" Kehoe of Ireland. He was predeceased by six brothers, James, Lawrence, Mathew, Michael, Patrick and William Dowling, and two sisters, Mary Kelly and Josie Burns. Services and interment took place in Ireland. A memorial Mass at St. Mary Church will be announced at a later date. The Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home handled arrangements.

John E. Gerli

John Emanuel Gerli, 96, a retired executive and World War II veteran, died June 20 at the Pavilion of the Osborn Retirement Center in Rye, N.Y. He was born Oct. 16, 1909 in New York City. Gerli attended Allen Stevenson and Hotchkiss School, and graduated from Yale University in 1932. He was an executive with E. Gerli & Co. and Greef Fabric Co. and co-owner of Palmer Marine Engine Co., located in Cos Cob. During World War II, he served as an intelligence officer with the U.S. Army's 66th Fighter Wing of the 8th Air Force.

He was assigned to a command post outside Cambridge, England with a fighter plane group supporting bomber raids and reconnaissance flights. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Active in the community, Gerli served for more than 50 years as a member of the Representative Town Meeting's (RTM) District 11. He was honored in 2004 for his dedicated service. In addition, he was a member of the Greenwich Police Auxiliary Force and a trustee of the Northeast Greenwich Association.

An active and enthusiastic skier until his 92nd year, Gerli was a co-founder and vice president of the Mad River Glen Ski area in Vermont, where he maintained a residence and participated in local groups. He was a member of the Amateur Ski Club in New York, the Round Hill Club, the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and an honorary member of Ye Olde Kings Highway Stamp Club of Darien and the Horseneck Club of Greenwich.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; his sons, John Jr. and Alexander; his daughters, Margaret, Eleanor and Diana; seven grandchildren, John III, Margaret, Linda, Bennett, Brooks, Alexander Jr. and Carrington, five great-grandchildren, and a brother, David. Gerli was predeceased by his twin sisters, Diana and Muriel. A memorial service was held at the Round Hill Community Church in Greenwich. The Fred Knapp & Son Funeral Home handled arrangements. Memorial donations: Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, or the Mad River Valley Community Fund.

Dorothy J. Hipp

Dorothy J. Hipp, 86, a leading realtor and long-time Greenwich resident, died at Greenwich Woods Health Care Facility on June 26, surrounded by her children. born Jan. 6, 1920 in Anniston, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Ansel Thomas Jobson and Augusta Harmon Jobson. She grew up in Anniston and attended Auburn University. Upon her return to Anniston, she met her late husband, Louis M. Hipp Jr., at a USO dance at Fort McClellan. They were wed on Oct. 24, 1943 and had been married more than 60 years at his death in 2004.

Hipp moved with her family to Greenwich in 1957 where she began a long involvement with the First Presbyterian Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher, committee chairperson, Deacon and Elder. In 2004, the Women of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich honored her as Woman of the Year for her many years of service. In addition, Hipp volunteered with various local PTAs, scouts and community organizations. She operated a dance school in Asheboro, N.C., and was a member of the Belle Haven Club for more than 40 years.

She began working as a Greenwich realtor with Wood Associates in 1965 and was named partner when the firm was acquired by Merrill Lynch Realty, now Prudential Connecticut Realty. She earned prestigious GRI and CRS designations. Over the years she won several awards for being one of the firm's top producers, including recognition by Prudential's Leading Edge Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Anne Hipp Habeck of Crownsville, Md., and two sons, Louis M. Hipp III and Thomas J. Hipp, both of Riverside, and 10 grandchildren. A service celebrating her life was held at the Second Congregational Church in Green-wich. The Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home handled arrangements. John B. Howell

John B. Howell, 51, of Green-wich, a former world-class decathlete, died suddenly June 22 in Southampton Long Island Hospital. born June 17, 1955 in England, he was the son of Iris Arkinstall Howell of the United Kingdom and the late Sidney Howell. He became a U.S. citizen Oct. 1, 1994. Howell was the vice president of marketing for Horizon Paper in Stamford.

A world-class athlete, he represented the U.K. in 1980 in the Lake Placid Winter Olympics as a member of the two- and four-man bobsled team and also won the Brakemen's Cup. He was also an avid golfer and a member of the Country Club of Darien, where he served on the membership committee. Howell was a volunteer and director of the Fairfield County Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Obernier Howell; a son, John Barry Howell Jr. of Green-wich, three brothers, Clive Howell and Tim Howell, both of the United Kingdom, and Phil Howell of Greenwich, and a granddaughter. A celebration of his life was held at the Country Club of Darien, and interment was private. The Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan handled arrangements. Memorial donations: John B. Ruth M. B. Lockwood

Ruth May Biase Lockwood, 85, an Old Greenwich resident for 60 years, died June 19 at her home. She was a DAR member. born Feb. 18, 1921 in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ruth Biase. She was predeceased by her husband, William Ralph "Rudy" Lockwood, and by a brother, Robert "Bob" Biase.

Lockwood is survived by a brother, William Biase and his wife, Edna, of Montauk, N.Y.; a grandson, William and his wife, Ginger, of Montauk; a sister-in-law, Shirley Biase of Homer, N.Y., and her children, Tommy and his wife, Clara, Kathy and Barbara, and grandnieces and grandnephews. A funeral was held at the First Congregational Church. The Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Emily S. Muir

Emily S. Muir, 83, of Green-wich, died suddenly at her home on June 11. She was undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. born Nov. 16, 1922 in West Rutland, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Sophie Kukulski Salwierz of Bridgeport. She graduated from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport in 1941, St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Bridgeport in 1944 as a registered nurse, and Boston University in 1948 with a B.S. degree in nursing education.

Muir began her career as a teacher at St. Vincent's School of Nursing and then joined Green-wich Hospital as the Pediatrics Department's head nurse and an instructor at the hospital's School of Nursing. While taking piano lessons at the Greenwich YMCA she met her future husband, William Muir Sr. For the remainder of her life, Greenwich became her home. She left the nursing profession to devote herself to her family, a job she valued above all others.

Muir is survived by three daughters, Suesan Barisic and her husband, Thomas, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., Amy Murrell and her husband, Don, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Laurie Muir of Green-wich; two sons, William Muir Jr., of Greenwich and Brian Muir and his wife, Jocelyn, of Orange; six grandchildren, David, Andrew and Matthew Murrell, Savannah LaMotte, Sara Barisic and Jason Macam; two brothers, Henry Salwierz of Spring Hill, Fla., and Francis Salwierz of New Milford, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, in January 2005; her sister, Cecilia Siwicki, and two brothers, Stanley and William Salwierz. A memorial Mass was celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church. County Cremation Ser-vices of Fairfield handled the arrangements. Memorial donations: American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

James E. Mullin

James E. Mullin, 63, a Green-wich native, now of Milford, Pa., died on June 26 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City after a long illness.Born Oct. 5, 1942, he was the son of Genevieve Amlicke Oefinger and the late John J. Mullin. He worked 25 years as a truck driver for Hawk of Connec-ticut, and retired from Marshall's Express where he was employed for 10 years.

Along with his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Mullin of Milford, Pa.; three sons, James E. Mullin Jr.; William J. Mullin and Michael J. Mullin, all of Milford, Pa.; three brothers, John J. Mullin Jr. of Arvada, Colo.; Capt. William F. Mullin of the Stamford Police Department and Robert E. Mullin, both of Greenwich; and two grandchildren, Jordan and JoAnn Mullin of Milford, Pa. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of St. Cecilia in Stamford, and interment followed at St. John's Cemetery, Darien. The Cognetta Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Anna D. Smolewski

Anna D. Smolewski, 80, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died June 28. born in Port Chester, N.Y., on Jan. 18, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Virginia Adams. She received a certificate of appreciation from the Green-wich Housing Authority for outstanding service and contributions as second-floor representative of the Agnes Morley Heights Residence Council from 1996-2000.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Rich of Trumbull; a son, Jim Smolewski of Norwalk; and three grandchildren, Tiffany Rich, Stephanie and Jesse Smolewski. Her husband, James Smolewski, predeceased her in 1980. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary R.C. Church on Greenwich Avenue, and interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich. The Castiglione Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Kathleen Mary Antonetti

Kathleen Mary Antonetti, 48, a 1976 graduate of Greenwich High School, died on Oct. 24 at Stamford Hospital after suffering multiple brain aneurysms.

Born to James and Patricia Kovac on Feb. 12, 1958, she was educated in Greenwich public schools. She was recently employed at Stop & Shop in Greenwich.

In addition to her parents, Antonetti is survived by a son, Daniel and his wife, Jennifer, and a daughter, Helen, all of Greenwich, as well as three grandchildren, Jason, Mikayla and Isabella Antonetti. She is also survived by three brothers, James Ferguson and his wife, Lisa, of Greenwich, Chris Ferguson and his wife, Lynette, of Plantsville and Brian Ferguson and his wife, Ellyn, of North Haven; and two sisters, Laura Seele and her husband, Joe, of Milford and Jean Moffat and her husband, Steve, of Trumbull. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Greenwich. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Rye Brook, NY.

The Castiglione Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Anthony Leo Brogan

Anthony Leo Brogan, 82, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Greenwich, died Oct. 16 in Dunedin, Fla. He and his wife, Mary (Zuccerella) Brogan, were married 59 years.

Brogan was born on Sept. 15, 1924 to Anthony Leo Brogan and Grace (Mellon) Brogan in Port Chester, N.Y., where his father was a police officer and later chief of police.

A graduate of Port Chester High School, Brogan enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served with distinction in the Pacific. He was employed by the Petroleum Heat & Power Co. The Brogans moved to Greenwich in the 1960s and retired to Florida in the 1980s, where he was an avid golfer and an active member of Clearwater Country Club.

In addition to his wife, Brogan is survived by three children, Nancy of Port Chester, Anthony Leo of Bridgeport and Kevin of Greenwich; four grandchildren, Anthony, Tara, Meghan and Kate; and a sister Patricia. He was predeceased by his brother, William, and a grandson, Ryan. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Oct. 21 at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Greenwich, with interment following in St. Mary s Cemetery.
