Frank C. Santos Sr.
December 03, 1913 - February 07, 2006
Frank C. Santos, Sr., 92, of Tori Lane, Brookfield, formerly of Danbury, devoted husband of Susan (Villane) Santos, passed away on Tuesday, February 7th. He was born in Taunton, MA. on December 3, 1913, son of the late Antone and Margaret (Correia) Santos.
Mr. Santos was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy. He worked in the mill room for Columbia Magnetic. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus McGivney counsel, the American Legion, and an honorable member of the Portuguese Club in Danbury. He enjoyed gardening, making wine, and loved his animals.
In addition to his beloved wife of 57 years, Susan, he is survived by his cherished daughter, Margaret Santos Arnold, with whom he made his home; his sister, Margaret Moniz of Southbury; his three grandchildren, Keith, Kyle and Kiana. He is also survived by his three Godchildren, Patricia Andrews, Hilda Henriques, and Marie Hall; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his two sons, Frank Santos, Jr., and Anthony Santos; his Godson, Alvaro A. Moniz, Jr.
Funeral Information
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, Danbury, on Saturday, February 12th at 10:00am. Burial in St. Peter Cemetery will follow.
The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Saturday morning between the hours of 8:30am and 9:30am.

Catherine E. Senior
June 30, 1915 - February 08, 2006
Catherine E. Senior, 90, of Brookfield, wife of the late Philip H. Senior, died at Hancock Hall on Wednesday, February 8th. She was born in New York, NY. On June 30, 1915, daughter of the Alfred and Helen (Corcoran) Lawler. She made her home in Brookfield in 1962.
Mrs. Senior was a devoted homemaker who maintained the family home. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Brookfield.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Jeanne Wilson and her husband, Charles of Danbury; her son, Kenneth A. Senior and his wife, Susan of Brookfield;; her six grandchildren, Brian Wilson, Dawn Ryan and her husband, Daniel, Melissa Heslin and her husband, Edward, Philip Senior II, Christina Bosco, and Adrianna Bosco; her three great grandchildren, Lindsay and Connor Ryan, and Cody Heslin. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Andrew Lawler; and sister, Dorothy Gravius.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 13th at 10:00am at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield. Burial in Central Cemetery will take place in the spring.

Mary Vasaturo
August 29, 1917 - February 08, 2006
Maria Carmella Theresa (DeVito) Vasaturo, 88, of New Fairfield, wife of the late Joseph J. Vasaturo, Sr., died at Danbury Hospital on Wednesday, February 8th. She was born in Brooklyn, NY., on August 29, 1917, daughter of the late Philip and Pasquelina (Strazza) DeVito.
Prior to making her home in New Fairfield, Mrs. Vasaturo made her home in Brookfield for more than 50 years. She worked as a housekeeper for the Diocese of Bridgeport at St. Joseph Rectory in Brookfield.
Mrs. Vasaturo was a member of AARP, the St. Joseph Minstrels, and the Brookfield Play House. She was very active in the Brookfield Community, the Connecticut Grange, and the Vespucci and Moose Lodges in Danbury.
She is survived by her two sons, Joseph J. Vasaturo, Jr. and his wife, Sue of Danbury, Andrew M. Vasaturo and his wife, Diane of Brookfield; her three daughters, Ann Marie Chauvin and her husband Pete of New Milford, Patricia McGee of Florida, and Mari Ann Lasky of New Milford; her daughter-in-law, Nancy Vasaturo of Brookfield. She is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren, forty-one great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband, and siblings, she was predeceased by her son, Michael Vasaturo.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Assembly of God in Brookfield on Friday, February 10th at 6:00pm. Cremation will take place at the direction of the family.
The family will receive friends at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield, on Thursday, February 9th between the hours of 6 and 8pm.

Scot T. Halas Sr.
April 10, 1971 - January 27, 2004
Scot T. Halas, Sr. of Inglenook Road, New Fairfield, devoted husband of Maritza (Suarez) Halas, died unexpectedly at his home, on Tuesday, January 27th. He was born in Danbury on April 10, 1971, son of Dale Halas of Sherman and Martha (Corsello) Halas of New Fairfield. He was a graduate of New Milford High School.
Scot was a landscaper, owning and operating Scot’s Yard Service for years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and membership in the New Fairfield – Sherman Sportsman’s Association. He worshiped at Grace and Vessels Faith Assembly in Danbury. Most importantly, Scot was a dedicated husband and father.
Besides his parents he is survived by his cherished wife of five years, Maritza; two sons, Scot, Jr., and Tyler. He is also survived by two brothers, Dale Halas, Jr., of Danbury, and Emil Halas of New Fairfield; grandmother, Mildred Halas of New Fairfield; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at the Congregational Church of New Fairfield on Monday, February 2nd at 11:00am with Reverend Patricia Nicholas officiating. Burial will follow in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Charles F. Pope
June 04, 1930 - April 17, 2006
Charles Frank Pope, 75, loving husband, father and grandfather, of Bethel, formerly of Ridgefield, CT, died on Monday, April 17, 2006, peacefully in his home with his family.
Charles was born on June 4, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Alfred August Pope, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Windecker. At the age of 3, under his father, he started his musical instruction at the piano and was a professional musician by the age of 15. His studies included choral and orchestral conducting, organ, piano, harmony, counterpoint, composition, and improvisation. He studied under and was mentored by many, including Robert Shaw, Elaine Brown, Fred Waring, Alice Parker and Willard Irving Nevins. Since his first organ recital at age 15, Charles and his choral groups delighted music lovers throughout the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas, with performances at many locations, including Town Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He was a published composer and arranger for chorus and English hand-bells, as well as arranged and recorded commercials for both radio and television. He served as organist, choir director, Minister of Music and Youth Director for many churches and temples in both New York and Connecticut.
Through music ministry, his talents were offered at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in New York City; Trinity Lutheran, Flatlands Dutch Reformed and St. Mark’s Methodist churches in Brooklyn; at Old Dutch Church in Kingston, NY; and at Bethlehem Lutheran, First Church of Christ Congregational, First Congregational, St. Anthony Marionite and Immanuel Lutheran churches in Connecticut. At these churches, Charles organized, directed, and/or supervised up to 5 vocal, 2 hand-bell and brass choirs. He presented choral concerts, choir shows and special music services. He also influenced and oversaw the replacement of organs at 7 churches. In addition, he served several other churches for special musical events. He was organist and choir director for Jewish services at the Brooklyn V.A. hospital and also organist for the High Holy Holidays in New York and Ridgefield. In connection with these churches, he organized and directed an annual children’s choir festival for 9 years that involved approximately 600 children.
As a conductor, at age 17, Charles organized and conducted the Charles Pope Choristers. This full chorus and show group presented over 1600 concerts and shows over its 34-year existence. In addition, he conducted over 800 performances of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S. choruses in NY; the King’s Glee Club of NY; the Women’s Club chorus of Great Neck, NY; the Dunn & Bradstreet chorus, the Choral Group of Temple Beth Elohim in NY; and the America Fore Insurance Co. Men’s and Women’s chorus of NY. His conducting credits extended with television where for CBS he conducted several hour-long national Christmas specials, and, for NBC, the Kraft Music Hall and the Ernie Kovacks Show. For radio, he presented his CPC chorus for many WNYC radio broadcasts. He was also the festival conductor for the Associated Male Choruses of America, at times with a chorus of 2000 men. He conducted many special festival choruses for The National Federation of Christians and Jews, The Federation of Protestant Man, and The Protestant Council of the City of New York. To his credit are over 250 fully staged Gilbert and Sullivan productions including the Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, Iolanthe and the Pirates of Penzance; tributes to Rogers & Hammerstein; dozens of Broadway shows including The Sound of Music, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Annie Get Your Gun, Guys and Dolls, Bye, Bye Birdie, Brigadoon, 1776, and The Wizard of Oz. With fond memories, he produced and conducted a unique Christmas Show, which, for many, started the Christmas season off, for 34 years, with a live Nativity scene as the hallmark of the production.
As a teacher, he taught music or conducted the choruses at the Notre Dame Academy of Ridgefield, CT; Our Lady of Sorrows R.C. School of Queens; and at Brooklyn College in NY. Privately, he taught piano, organ, improvisation, conducting, voice and theory for 60 years.
As a pianist and organist, he appeared as a recitalist and accompanist in numerous concerts throughout the NY area. Among his many credits are accompanying Jussi Bjoerling and Hilde Gueden of the Metropolitan Opera and Fred Waring Choral Workshops. Charles also won acclaim from the NY critics when he appeared at Carnegie Hall as a soloist with his interpretations of Bach. He was a member and past board member of the American Guild of Organists in NY and CT, member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Associated Musicians of Greater New York, American Guild of Variety Artists and was past Vice President and President of the Conductors Club of New York.
As a husband and a father, he was an adored and loved friend and mentor. His wishes were to see his family successfully into the future with much love, faith and happiness, to which he succeeded. His gifts of wisdom were many. Charles’ favorite activities included taking cruises with his family, woodworking, home improvements, cooking, gardening, boating, dry humor, and listening to Bach and Wagnerian Operas at full volume.
Charles is survived by his wife, Eleanor M. Pope of Bethel; son Christopher C. and wife Eileen M. Pope of Charlotte, North Carolina; and son Jonathan A. and wife Jennifer N. Pope of Sandy Hook, Connecticut, along with four adoring grandchildren, Christopher Charles, Jr., Michael Russell, Devon Joseph Charles, and Lauren Whitney.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 18 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury, CT. The family will be greeting friends prior to the service starting at 1:30.

Elizabeth Rita Gereg
December 22, 1909 - April 20, 2006
Elizabeth Rita (Canfield) Gereg, formerly of Iron Works Hill Road, Brookfield, wife of the late John J. Gereg, died at Ashlar of Newtown, on Thursday, April 20th. She was born in New Milford on December 22, 1909, daughter of the late Kazimierz and Mary (Yarus) Janulewicz.
Mrs. Gereg worked as an airplane spotter during World War II. She later worked as an assembler for Winchester Electronics in New Milford and in production for Davis and Geck of Danbury. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church Brookfield and enjoyed activities at the Brookfield Senior Center.
She will be sadly missed by her son, John J. Gereg, Jr of Brookfield; her daughter, Patricia Novicky, of Brookfield; as well as seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Theodore Gereg; her grandson, Ronald M. Gereg; her two brothers, Kazimierez Janulewicz and Ted Canfield and five sisters, Mamie Kraska, Anne Ludwizak, Verona Sandhoff, Rose Greenlaw and Dorothy Kellogg.

Margaret Mariano
July 16, 1925 - April 21, 2006
Margaret (Senecka) Mariano, 80, of Park Lawn Drive, Bethel, formerly of Kendall Terrace, East, Danbury, devoted wife of Angelo Mariano, passed away peacefully at Danbury Hospital on Friday, April 21st. She was born in Bridgeport on July 16, 1925, daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Crekuz) Senecka.
Mrs. Mariano made her home in Danbury in 1951. She was a devoted homemaker who maintained the family home for her husband and children. She was a lifetime member of the First Assembly of God Church and was very active in all aspects of her church life.
Most importantly, she was a faithful Christian, loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 56 years, Angelo; her son, Frank J. Mariano and his wife, Annie of Bridgewater; her daughter, Donna M. Montesi and her husband Bill of Danbury; her daughter-in-law, Nancy Silvestri and her husband Jack of Danbury; and her five grandchildren, Angelo Mariano and his wife, Kelly, Carina Mariano, Meghan Mariano, Melissa and Christine Montesi. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Michael A. Mariano.

Margaret (Smigala) Elwell
July 14, 1917 - January 14, 2004
Margaret (Smigala) Elwell, 86, of Padanaram Road, Danbury, was reunited with her husband, the late Weldon E. Elwell, on Wednesday, January 14th. She was born in the family home on William Street, Danbury, on July 14, 1917, daughter of the late Ferdinand and Margaret (Ricktarcick) Smigala. She was a graduate of Immanuel Lutheran School and Danbury High, Class of 1935.
Margaret was secretary to Mr. Hanson in the Department of Research and Planning for Western Connecticut State Univ. for 14 years, retiring in 1983. Prior to that she worked as bookkeeper for 27 years with D.G. Penfield Co. in Danbury.
Margaret was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and taught Sunday School there for more than 40 years. She was a member of the Mr. & Mrs. Club and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed being involved in many of the church organizations until illness curtailed her activities.
She will be sadly missed by her loving son, David W. Elwell and his wife, Jill, of Old Lyme; cherished daughters, Phyllis Knecht of Danbury, and Cynthia Stone and her husband, Richard, of Bridgeport; her five grandsons, one granddaughter, and two great grandsons. She is also survived by a brother, Edward Smigala and his wife, Ruth of Danbury, sister-in-law, Ilse Smigala of Southbury, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Weldon, she was predeceased by twelve brothers and sisters.
