Barbara H. McManus
NORTH HAVEN - Barbara H. Peary McManus, 75, of 15 Susan Lane, died Feb. 4, 1999. She was the widow of William M. McManus.
Mrs. McManus was the daughter of the late Justin and Eula May Hodsdon Peary and had worked for Candid Cleaners of North Haven until her retirement.
She leaves daughters, Dorel Benson of East Haven, Coreen Brown of Higganum, Margaret Titus of Wallingford; and a son, Kevin McManus of Wallingford. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and was predeceased by a brother, Harold Peary.
Her funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, Monday at 11:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Frances Cabrini Church at noon. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m.
Bruce P. Slodzinski
SOUTHINGTON - Bruce P. Slodzinski, 44, of 351 Marion Ave., Plantsville section, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was the husband of Lynn (Norton) Slodzinski.
Born Aug. 27, 1954, in Southington, he was the son of Mary Jane (Lynch) Slodzinski and the late Joseph J. Slodzinski. He was bank manager for Lafayette American Bank in West Hartford. Bruce was a volunteer firefighter for Engine Co. 2 in Plantsville for over 21 years.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two brothers, Brian J. Slodzinski of Florida and Thomas J. Slodzinski of Virginia, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Patricia and Franklin Norton of Plantsville; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to Immaculate Conception Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Bruce P. Slodzinski Scholarship Fund, c/o Southington Fire Department Co. 2, P.O. Paul J. Tomassetti
MERIDEN - Paul J. Tomassetti, 76, husband of the late Cecile LaHaye Tomassetti, formerly of Center Street, died Thursday night, Feb. 4, 1999, in the Westfield Care and Rehab Center after a brief illness.
He was born in Meriden, Sept. 15, 1922, a son of the late Louis and Marietta Scalzi Tomassetti. He was a lifelong resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He and his brother Arthur were third-generation grocers. Paul spent 51 years in their family's business, Tomassetti Market, on Center Street. He was a parishioner of St. Laurent Church.
He is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur and Rosemary Tomassetti of Meriden, and Joseph and Evelyn Tomassetti of Lakehearst, N.J.; a stepson and his wife, William and Alta Nickodemski Sr. of Meriden; two step-grandchildren, William Nickodemski Jr. and Debbie Lucas; five nieces and nephews, with Elizabeth Tomassetti and Laura Glasow residing locally. He was predeceased by a brother, Louis Tomassetti Jr.
Funeral services will be private. Interment will be at the convenience of his family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St.
Monica A. King
MERIDEN - Monica A. King, 87, formerly of 76 Butler St., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at the Westfield Care and Rehab Center. She was the wife of the late Francis A. King.
She was born in Oswego, N.Y., Oct. 28, 1911, the daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Collins Serow. She was a graduate of Oswego High School and had been employed as a collection clerk at Electrolux Corporation until her retirement in 1978. She was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church in South Meriden and a member of the South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen M. Stange of Meriden; two sons, Thomas F. King of West Barrington, R.I., and Lawrence G. King of Palm Harbor, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Callahan and Catherine O'Neil and two brothers, John Serow and Francis Serow.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery
in Quincy, Mass. The Rev. William McCarthy will officiate. Calling hours will be Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. SOUTHINGTON - The funeral of Margaret Lane will be held TODAY at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m.
Judith Marek
BRISTOL - Judith Marie Marek, 53, of 593 Red Stone Hill Road, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at Bristol Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Robert Marek.
Born in Marshall, Maine, she was the daughter of Evelyn (Kinney) Crouse Kingsbury of Bridgewater, Maine, and the late Guy Crouse. She was employed by the New Britain Transportation Co. as a bus driver for the Southington school system.
Besides her husband and mother, she leaves her children, Dale Dearborn of Mechanic Falls, Maine, Darla Allen of Auburn, Maine, Denice Fletcher, Wayne Dearborn and Robert J. Marek, all of Wolcott; five stepchildren, Robert Marek of Oklahoma, Annette Marek of Cheshire, Diane Marek of Bristol, Ronald Marek and Cheryl Zakrewski, both of Southington; 16 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to the Hospice of Bristol Hospital, 7 N. Washington St., Plainville, CT 06062.
Boyd Moreland Jr.
MERIDEN - Boyd Henry Moreland Jr., 72, of 76 Butler St., died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at the MidState Medical Center.
He was born in Newark, N.J., Feb. 10, 1926, a son of the late Boyd H. and Helen D. Emerson Moreland Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended Brown University and worked as a dispatcher at the Yellow Cab Co. He was a member of the AARP.
He is survived by daughter, Jennifer Laura Moreland of Torrington; two sons, Boyd (Bucky) H. Moreland of Marionville, Mi., Roy E. Moreland of Port Orchard, Wash.; and a granddaughter, Haley Rose Moreland of Columbia, Mi.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry Beaver will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
John P. Palmer
HAMDEN - John P. Palmer, 86, formerly of Woodin Street, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Harborside Healthcare-Arden House in Hamden after a brief illness. He was the husband of Eleanor M. (Bernadini) Palmer.
Mr. Palmer was born May 30, 1912, in Wallingford, son of the late Andrew and Emma (Dorsey) Palmieri. He has been a resident of Hamden for the past 53 years, moving from Meriden. Mr. Palmer was the head custodian for Southern Conn. State College for 10 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to that he owned Johnny's Restaurant, formerly on Dixwell Avenue, for 24 years until closing in 1968. He was a world War II Army-Air Force Corps veteran in the 98th Squadron, receiving seven battle stars and was a member of the American Legion Post #150.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dick and Donna Dube of Cheshire; grandchildren, Dana April and Stacey Lynn Dube, both of Cheshire, and Thomas Anthony Dube of West Haven; and a brother, Anthony Palmer of Hamden. He was predeceased by a brother, Silvio Palmieri and two sisters, Rose Dysart and Margaret Girasuolo.
His funeral will leave the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Friday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bridget's Church in Cheshire. Friends may call at the funeral home, Friday from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven.
Dorothy A. Schiller
ORLANDO, Fla. - Dorothy A. Schiller, 83, mother of former Record-Journal Managing Editor Donald H. Schiller, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, where she lived since 1996.
Mrs. Schiller was a former secretary for Bergen County, N.J.
Besides Mr. Schiller of Baltimore, Md., survivors include a daughter, Jane Hickey of Orlando; a son, John E. of Arlington, Va.; and six grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at 2 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, Bogota, N.J. Flowers or donations may be sent to the church, the American Heart Association, or to the New York Times Neediest Cases.
Henry J. Sioch
MERIDEN - Henry J. Sioch, 81, of Swain Avenue, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in his home with his family at his side. He and his beloved wife, Mary De Angelis Sioch, had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January 1996.
Born in Meriden, March 11, 1917, son of the late Stanley and Adeline Sioch, he was a lifelong resident. He had been employed by the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Co., of North Haven, for 25 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy for 11 years. He enjoyed a full and active retirement life traveling, gardening, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Besides his wife, Mr. Sioch is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Michael Mickiewicz of Meriden; his son, Sonne Jon Sioch of Meriden; his two grandsons, Thomas Amann Jr. and Michael Mickiewicz; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Edmund and Ann Sioch of Summerfield, Fla., and Benjamin and Rose Sioch of Hollywood, Fla., and Dolores Sioch of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Casimir Sioch, and a son, David Sioch.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (TODAY) at 10:15 a.m. from The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Military honors will be accorded at the church following the Mass. Interment will be private in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 188, North Haven, CT 06473.
Lois M.V. Lockert
CHESHIRE - Lois M.V. Meng Lockert, 86, of Academy Road, widow of Charles J. Lockert, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at the home of her son, James A. Lockert in Southington.
Mrs. Lockert was born in Waterbury, June 18, 1912, daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude Ellen Magson Meng. She had been a resident of Cheshire for many years. She had been employed at R.W. Hine Hardware Co. in Cheshire until her retirement in 1978, and had also been assistant head gate attendant at the Oakdale Musical Theater for 45 years.
Besides her son, James, she is survived by her other son, Charles R. Lockert, who resided with her in Cheshire; her daughter, Lois (Mrs. Floyd) Malcolm of Wiscassett, Maine; three grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (Mrs. George) Martin of Norrigewolk, Maine, and Gertrude (Mrs. Carroll) Snell of Woolwine, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Mrs. Lockert's wishes, there will be no public funeral service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford.
