Helen B. Burghardt
WALLINGFORD — Helen B. Burghardt, 88, of North Elm Street, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at her home. She was the wife of the late John H. Burghardt.
She leaves no known relatives.
Funeral services and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., is in charge of arrangements.
Alice Crowell
MERIDEN — Alice Crowell, of 154 Liberty St., died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Fort Pierce, Florida. She was the wife of the late William Crowell.
Mrs. Crowell was born in Lowell, Mass., April 13, 1926.
She leaves eleven sons, William Crowell, Martin Crowell, both of Lowell, Mass., Arthur Crowell of Walpole, Mass., Thomas and John Crowell, both of Meriden, Frank Downey of Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, John (Jack) Downey of Louisanna, Maine, Eddie Myers, Thomas Dolan and Joseph Downey Jr., all of Massachusetts, and James Downey of Florida; seven daughters, Mary Ann Jackson of New Haven, Ann Geivas of Fort Pierce, Florida, Alice Crowell of Meriden, Ann Marie Rogers, Margie Anastos and Patty Prior, all of Massachusetts, and Geraldon DiSivio; 42 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Crowell was predeceased by three sons, Richard Crowell, Russell Crowell and James Crowell.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Dixwell Memorial Funeral, 308 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven. Family and friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in West Cemetery, Meriden.
Charlotte M. Hobson
MERIDEN — Charlotte M. Hobson, 81, of 27 Wilbur Ave., wife of the late Russell I. Hobson, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at MidState Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Franklin, Mass., July 1, 1917, a daughter of the late Walter E. and Alice (Woodward) Morse, she had resided in Meriden for the past 58 years. Mrs. Hobson was educated in Meriden for the past 58 years. Mrs. Hobson was educated in the Massachusetts schools and had been employed by Mills Manor and Connecticut Baptist Home, retiring three years ago.
She was a member of the Center Congregational Church, a deaconess at the Church, a member of the Board of Trustees, a member of the Tri-C Club, the Mother's Club, a member of The Koinonia, also the Mayflower Society, the Morse Society, the Susan Carrington-Clarke Chapter of the DAR serving as president, a member and senior president of the Joel Cooke Society C.A.R. which her love of country, history, and her patriotism was expressed through her volunteer work and teaching children.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Charlotte H. Brown of Simsbury; Susan H. and Dale White of Meriden and Muriel and Bruce Soroka of South Meriden; a stepson, and his wife, Robert and Evelyn Ring of Wakefield, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Priscilla Flynn, Alicia Brault, Rebecca Brown, Russell White, Marie Gaetani, Tammy Clancy, Susan Soroka, and seven step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, Timothy Flynn, Daniel Flynn, Jordon Brault, Michael Brault, Alyssa Gaetani, Ashley Gaetani; a sister, Beulah M. Mills of Meriden and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Ross.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 11 a.m. .at Center Congregational Church with the Rev. George True officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Center Congregational Church, 474 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450.
James R. Michalke
PUTNEY, Vt. — James R. Michalke, 55, died Friday morning, Jan. 15, 1999, of a cardiac arrest at the Brattleboro Hospital.
He leaves his parents, Robert and Elizabeth Michalke of Brattleboro; two sisters, Betsy Wettish and Susan Downes, and two nieces and two nephews.
James was employed at the Brattleboro Reformer. He was a Deacon at the United Church of Putney. He was an avid collector of stamps and a member of the Brattleboro Stamp Club. He enjoyed sailing and researching lighthouse histories. He was also a member of Meridian Lodge 77 AF/AM Connecticut.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Putney, Vt. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the United Church of Putney or to the Shriners Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
Alfred J. Pareti
SNEEDVILLE, Tenn — Alfred J. Pareti, 77, of Sneedville, formerly of Wallingford, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis Blandina Pareti.
Mr. Pareti was born in Wallingford, Oct. 11, 1921, a son of late Dominic and Josephine Draghi Pareti, and had lived in Wallingford for many years until moving to Tennessee in 1991. He had been a head custodian for the Wallingford Board of Education for many years until his retirement, and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church.
Besides his wife Phyllis, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald J. and Susan K. Pareti and his grandson, Joseph A. Pareti, all of Sneedville; his sister, Rena DiStasio of Wallingford; a niece, Cleta Hall of Wallingford; two grandnephews, Jeffrey and Michael Hall; a great grandniece, a great grandnephew, and several cousins. He was predeceased by his twin brother and sister-in-law, Aldo J. and Sandra Pareti, and his brother-in-law, Leo DiStasio.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday (TODAY) from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home when the funeral procession will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.
Walter J. Prusaczyk
NEW BRITAIN — Walter J. Prusaczyk, 80, of New Britain, entered into eternal rest Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at New Britain General Hospital.
He was born in Easthampton, Mass., and had been a resident of New Britain for 58 years. He was the widow of Sophie (Popielarczyk) Prusaczyk. He was formerly employed for the Stanley Works for 32 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Sacred Heart Church.
He is survived by two sons, Fred and his wife, Sheryl Prusaczyk of Carson, Calif., and Robert J. Prusaczyk of New Britain; one daughter, Patricia and her husband, Erick Collin of Southington; one brother, Stanley Prusaczek of New Britain. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jason Prusaczyk, Ryan Prusaczyk, Jeremy Collin, Michael Collin, Julie Ramos and several nieces and nephews.
The rite of committal will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at 9:30 a.m. at the New Britain Memorial Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, with the funeral liturgy at 10:15 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call today, Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Annie Ryan
MERIDEN — Annie (Lawlor) Ryan, 66, of Meriden, died on Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Coccomo Memorial Health Care Center in Meriden.
Born in Houlton, Maine, on July 8, 1932, daughter of the late Wallace Edwin and Ida (Byron) Lawlor, she had lived in Meriden since 1954. She graduated from Houlton High School, Class of 1950, and from the University of Maine at Farmington, class of 1954. Mrs. Ryan was employed by the Meriden Board of Education from 1954 to 1992. She taught for six years at Roger Sherman School for 22 years at Benjamin Franklin School, and she worked part time for several years in the box office of the Oakdale Theatre. Mrs. Ryan was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Lambda Chapter) in the State of Connecticut.
Mrs. Ryan is survived by a son, Timothy Ryan of Meriden.
The funeral and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 188, North Haven, CT 06473, or to MidState VNA and Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all of her friends for their support in the past several months. It was a great comfort to her and to her son. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Edith E. Schafrick
MIDDLEFIELD — Edith E. "Betty" (Huse) Schafrick, 85, of Main Street, Middlefield, wife of the late George E. Schafrick Sr., died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Middlesex Hospital.
Born in Middlefield, she was the daughter of the late Clair L. and Florence (Link) Huse.
Mrs. Schafrick had lived in Old Saybrook and Middlefield most of her life. She was employed by Xerox Corp. for 25 years, retiring in 1978.
She is survived by one sister, Margaret Egan of Middlefield; two grandchildren, Cindy Sadlowski of Higganum, and Jackie Appleby of Old Saybrook; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by three sons, George Schafrick Jr., Bruce Schafrick and Gary Schafrick; and a brother, Kenneth W. Huse Sr.
Graveside services will be held at Middlefield Cemetery
at a date and time to be announced.
Friends may call at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Those who prefer, may make contributions in her memory to the charity of the donor's choice.
Vernal Schnabel
HARTFORD — Vernal (Massow) Schnabel, 87, of Avery Heights, Hartford, and a former Wethersfield resident, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Hartford Hospital. She was the widow of Harold W. Schnabel.
Born in South Meriden, daughter of the late Otto and Johanna (Weisbauer) Massow she had lived in Wethersfield for over 50 years. Mrs. Schnabel was a retired school teacher having taught in The Dwight School, Hartford, from the 1940's until her retirement in 1967. She had previously taught at The Hanover Elementary School in South Meriden and in several one room schools in Eastern Connecticut. She was a graduate of Meriden High School and received her teaching certificate from New Britain State Normal School, now CCSU class of 1930. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority, a member of the Dwight School Teachers Association, a member of Castle Craig Camera Club, the Country Camera Club and the Charter Oak Camera Club. Vernal along with her late husband Harold, loved to travel and had visited over 85 countries. She was an avid bridge player and a 50 year member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church.
She is survived by two nephews, Arthur W. Schnabel, and his wife, Barbara of Newington, and Edward A. Schnabel and his wife, Lucyna of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; two grandnephews, Craig and Brian Schnabel, and her brother-in-law, Edward H. Schnabel, and his wife, Rachel of Newington, and many friends.
The funeral will be Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the family plot at Gethsemane Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, Wednesday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Church, 371 Wolcott Hill Road, Wethersfield, CT 06109.
