CATHERINE A. CRASA
MERIDEN — Catherine A. Crasa, formerly of Wethersfield, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at the Meriden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born on June 13, 1921, in Meriden, a daughter of the late Francesco and Rosaria Barbuto Crasa. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1939. She was employed for 30 years with the federal government, retiring as an analyst with the Internal Revenue Service. While employed by the federal government she was a recipient of numerous awards and certificates of recognition. Her federal government employment included the Department of Health, Welfare and Social Security, closed microphone reporter; the Office of Appeals Council at the Connecticut Military District, clerk stenographer; and the Hartford and Springfield Ordnance Department, clerk. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Wethersfield Senior Center and Sacred Heart Women's Club. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church of Wethersfield and St. Rose of Lima Church of Meriden. She was known for her interests in bowling, golf, horticulture, and her love for music.
She is survived by her sister, Rose C. Crasa of Meriden; two brothers, Salvatore P. Crasa of Meriden and Dr. Anthony R. Crasa of Melbourne, Fla.; three nieces, Janis A. Ruchala of Cheshire, Charlotte R. Wuterich of Meriden and Frances C. Leon of Wallingford; and a grandniece, Kimberly A. Brewster of Cheshire.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 30, 1998, at 9:15 a.m. from the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home today, July 29, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m.
MANUEL LAWRENCE
NORWICH, N.Y. — Manuel Lawrence, 62, of Norwich, N.Y., formerly of Meriden, Conn., died on Friday, July 24, 1998, at his home.
Born in Falmouth, Mass., on Aug. 13, 1935, Mr. Lawrence was the son of the late Antone and Brister Lawrence. He had attended schools in Falmouth and was self-employed as a truck driver. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U.S. Army. Mr. Lawrence was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Meriden and was a member of the VFW in New York.
He is survived by three sons, Stephen Lawrence of Wallingford, Conn., Edward Lawrence of South New Berlin, N.Y., and Lt. Michael Lawrence, stationed at Vandenberg AFB in California; a daughter, Kathleen Smith of South Dakota; two stepdaughters, Deborah Hanlon of Meriden and Cheryl Kowalski of Wallingford; a sister, three brothers, seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial with military honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
EDWARD C. MORAND
SOUTHINGTON — Edward C. Morand, 91, of 25 Bristol St., died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Eleanor (Whitney) Morand.
He was born Aug. 29, 1906, in St. Louis, Missouri. He had retired in 1960 from Fafnir Bearing Co. of New Britain, where he had worked for 25 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Edward G. Morand of Tannersville, Va.; two daughters, Kathryn McNamara-Bosse of Bristol and Sharon LaFlamme of Southington; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
STEPHEN E. DAVIS
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Stephen E. Davis, 56, formerly of Hamden, Conn., died suddenly on July 24, 1998. He was the beloved husband of Susan Austin Davis, formerly of Meriden, Conn.
He was born and raised in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of the late Lawrence J. and Mary Alice Davis.
He is survived by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Chester and Catherine Austin of Southington; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Barbara and Bud Erickson and Janet Davis of Indiana; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruce and Virginia Valentine of Meriden; six nephews and a niece, Dave, Greg, Joe and Andy Erickson and Gretchen Lusk, all of Indiana, and Jason and Jamie Valentine of Meriden.
A memorial service was held on July 27, 1998, in Virginia Beach. Contributions may be made in loving memory of Stephen to the Vets House Inc., 3133 Magic Hollow Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va. 23456.
CATHERINE G. GAMMERINO
SOUTHINGTON — Catherine "Kitty" G. Gammerino, 88, of 791 S. Main St., Plantsville section, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Charles E. Gammerino.
Born in Southington Aug. 24, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Morelli Sr. and Antoinette (Rich) Morelli Frasso. She was a 1927 graduate of Lewis High School and graduated from New Britain Normal School. She retired in 1970 from the Joseph DePaolo Insurance Agency. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church and its Ladies Guild. Mrs. Gammerino was a member of the Southington Board of Education for eight years. She was a member of the Democratic Women's Club, and a former member of the Democratic Committee. She was also a member of the Maria SS Delgi Angeli Society and the Catholic Council of Women.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Cathy Weston, and son-in-law, Daniel, of Southington; a brother, Steven M. Frasso, and sister-in-law, Margaret, of Nevada; and sister, Mary Nolan of Southington; a granddaughter, Melissa Maniscalco, and her husband, William, of Plantsville; two brothers-in-law, Robert Keating and Matthew Gammerino, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Morelli; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Morelli, and three sisters, Gloria Keating, Amelia Gemino and Louise Perrone.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Reuben Thalberg Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 272, Southington, CT 06489.
LYDIA JACKSON
MERIDEN — Lydia Muraski Jackson, 99, of 641 Broad St., wife of the late Joseph E. Jackson, died on Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Miller Memorial Community in Meriden.
Born in Meriden on Oct. 5, 1898, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Doering) Muraski. She was educated in the Meriden school system and was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Eddis) Catalano of Meriden; a sister, Eleanor Griglack of Meriden; two nieces, Deirdra Griglack of Meriden and Paulette Schultz of Dania, Fla.; and by two nephews, Neale Laurence of Northboro, Mass., and David Laurence of Meriden. She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Muraski and Ann Laurence, and three brothers, Walter, George and Edward Muraski.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to Mass.
VIOLA MALEY
MERIDEN — Viola Shields Maley, 77, of 151 Centennial Ave., died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. She was the widow of John F. Maley.
Mrs. Maley, daughter of the late Robert and Bigella Lord Shields was born in northern Maine, Feb. 5, 1921, and had been a resident of Meriden for the past 45 years. She was employed as bookkeeper for Meriden Rolling Mill for 25 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Abbott of Meriden; by brothers, Kenneth Lord of Patten, Maine, and Reginald Lord of Meriden; by sisters, Constance and her husband, Dana Wilson of Houlton, Maine, and Natalie and her husband, Roger McLeod of Beverly, Mass.; and by two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Robert Shields and Richard Lord.
The West Haven Funeral Home at the Green is in care of private funeral arrangements. Burial will be in Patten, Maine.
JAMES E. RAYMOND
BAREFOOT BAY, Fla. — James Edward Raymond, 82, of 436 East Egret Circle, Barefoot Bay, Fla., died July 16, 1998, at his residence after a prolonged illness. He had lived in Meriden and Southington for many years prior to moving to Florida.
He was born May 16, 1916, in Brewer, Maine, and moved to Barefoot Bay in the early 1980s from Sebastian, Fla. He was a member of Mystic Lodge No. 65 AF&AM of Hampden, Maine, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sebastian River Area Post. Her served in the U.S. Army in World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by their only child, Gertrude Ann Raymond Brys, of Keene, N.H.
Arrangements were under the direction of Fountainhead Memorial Funeral Home, Palm Bay, Fla.
VINCENT A. CLEMENTS
SOUTHINGTON — Vincent A. Clements Sr., 75, of 132 Spring Lake Road, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband for 50 years of Stella (Krystofolski) Clements.
Born May 24, 1923, in Duryea, Pa., he was the son of the late Vincent G. and Mary (Misorek) Clements. He had been a resident of Southington for the past 50 years. He retired 13 years ago from the Southington school system. Mr. Clements was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Army Tank Corps during World War II and received two Purple Heart medals. He was a member of the American Legion Kiltonic Post 72. Mr. Clements played for the semipro football team, the Southington Gems. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Vincent A. Clements Jr. and Susan of Kensington, Paul S. Clements and Renee, Peter J. Clements and Susan, all of Southington and Kenneth Krystofolski and Alta of Plantsville; five brothers, John, Edward, Jerome and George Clements of Southington and Leonard Clements of Meriden; three sisters, Christine DeLuco and Romaine Dube of Southington Marie Gorley of Meriden; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Zale, and two brothers, Joseph and Thomas Clements.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 10:45 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to the Immaculate Conception Church at 11:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will be at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Bradley Memorial Hospital, ICU, 81 Meriden Ave., Southington, CT 06489.
