CHARLES J. BOYLE JR.
WOODBRIDGE — Mr. Charles "Chuck" J. Boyle Jr., 47, of Woodbridge, devoted husband of Barbara Murphy Boyle, beloved son of Bernadette Westlake Boyle of Fairfield and the late Charles J. Boyle Sr., died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the Hospital of St. Raphael, New Haven, after being stricken in his home.
He was born May 6, 1951, in Bridgeport. He was a resident of Milford and Orange before moving to Woodbridge two and one-half years ago.
Mr. Boyle was the president and chief executive officer for the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce. He was a teacher for the Foundation School before becoming its director of operations in 1974. In 1980, he founded COMPUTERease Inc., a Milford-based computer company. Mr. Boyle was the executive director for the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the United States from 1990 to 1997, when he left to work as a consultant for Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
Mr. Boyle earned his bachelor of science degree from Keene State College, Keene, N.H., and had taken graduate courses at Fairfield University. He was an associate fellow at Pierson College of Yale University and served on the board of directors for the European American Chamber of Commerce and the Diocese of Bridgeport, Catholic Charities.
He was profiled as one of Connecticut's top 10 entrepreneurs by Connecticut Magazine and named 'Dealer of the Year' in Micro Market World, a national computer industry magazine.
In addition to his wife and mother, Mr. Boyle is survived by a son, Stephen J. Boyle, and a daughter, Colleen E. Boyle, both of Woodbridge; four brothers, Michael P. Boyle of Milford, Brian E. Boyle of Fairfield, Gerald A. Boyle of Grapevine, Texas , and Matthew T. Boyle of Monroe; a sister, Marie J. Boyle of Norwalk; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Mark S. Boyle.
Services will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St. on the Green, Milford, with a Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. in Holy Infant Church, 450 Race Brook Road, Orange. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made in Mr. Boyle's memory to The Foundation School Inc., 719 Derby-Milford Road, Orange, CT 06477.
SOPHIE E. GRIFFIN
WALLINGFORD — Sophie E. Widstrom Griffin, 90, of North Street, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Meriden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank J. "Snap" Griffin.
Mrs. Griffin was born in Meriden, Feb. 2, 1908, and was a lifelong Wallingford resident. She had been a bookkeeper at the former Union Trust Co. office on North Main Street in Wallingford for many years until her retirement. She and her late husband had been proprietors of the former Griffin's Variety Store on North Colony Street in Wallingford for many years. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church and was a member of the Ladies Guild of the parish, as well as the Holy Trinity Volunteer Group to Regency House of Wallingford, which was the recipient of the Community Citizens Award in 1994, by the Wallingford Grange, in recognition of weekly visits to the home. She was also a member of the AARP, Wallingford chapter, and the Veterans Memorial Medical Center Women's Auxiliary, and had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross-Wallingford-Meriden Chapter and the Wallingford Holiday for Giving.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward Widstrom and Louis Widstrom.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to Most Holy Trinity Church Preservation Project, 68 N. Colony St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the charity of one's choice.
EDWARD F. HEDBERG
MERIDEN – Edward F. Hedberg, husband of Helen (DiPasquale) Hedberg, died at home on Monday, July 20, 1998, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden, he was the son of the late Fred and Elizabeth (Treiber) Hedberg. He was a lifelong resident of Meriden, and was a graduate of Meriden High School and Horace Wilcox Technical School. Mr. Hedberg was employed by Travelers Insurance Co. for 41 years, and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of St. Mary Church and was a member of the Nutmeg Beagle Club in Middlefield.
Besides his wife, Helen, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick and Karen Hedberg of Southington; by two beloved grandchildren, Katherine and Christine Hedberg, and by several cousins.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery. ADELA W. JOHNSON
MERIDEN — Adela W. Johnson, 78, of 1201 N.E. 191st. St., North Miami Beach, Fla., a native of Meriden, wife of the late Alvin S. Johnson, died on Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at VEN COR Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.
Born in Meriden on Dec. 5, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Molly Weisser. Mrs. Johnson lived in Meriden for most of her life, was a 1937 graduate of Meriden High School, and moved to Florida in the mid-1980s. She was for many years vice president and bookkeeper for the family business, Milner's Café. She was a founder and active member of the Actors Playhouse of Meriden, producing and performing in many productions. She delighted family and friends with her artistic talents in cartooning and painting.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Linda Johnson and Irving and Linda Johnson, all of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Kimberly and Richard; Laura, Sarah, Allyson, Paul and Charlie; and by four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Jerome Weisser.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 9 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 11 a.m. at the Waterbury Hebrew Benefit Cemetery
for a graveside service with Rabbi Jay Lapidus officiating. MILLARD LADD SR.
WALLINGFORD — Millard Ladd Sr., 98, of the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, formerly of 79 Cheshire Road, died Monday, July 20, 1998. He was the husband of the late Delia Johnson Ladd.
He was born in Stratford, May 12, 1900, a son of the late Frank and Ethel Bacon Ladd. Until his retirement, he was machinist at Winchester Repeating Arms. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Compass Lodge 9 AF & AM of Wallingford.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Millard Ladd Jr. and Mary Ann Ladd of Meriden; and a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Peter Homestead of Wallingford; four grandchildren, Richard Homestead, Robert Ladd, Kristen Rosenberry and Dawn Ladd; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Masonic Home Chapel, Masonic Ave., Wallingford. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford.

GEORGE G. PROTO
ANSONIA — George G. Proto, 84, of 41 Jewett St., died July 20, 1998, at the Mariner Health Care Center with his loving family present. He was the husband of the late Emily DeFelice Proto.
Born in New Haven, July 12, 1914, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Malone Proto. He was retired from the Olin Corporation, Winchester Division of New Haven. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Derby, fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and he had served on the Derby Board of Education for 12 years.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph G. and Adele Proto of Wallingford; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers; one sister; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Robert A. Proto, and an infant son, George Proto.
The funeral will leave the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby, Thursday at 8:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in Mt. St. Peter's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
THELMA H. WALFORD
WALLINGFORD — Thelma H. Walford, 86, of the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, formerly of 33 Fairview Ave., died Monday, July 20, 1998. She was the wife of Stephen Walford.
She was born in Fowler, Ind., Oct. 26, 1911, a daughter of the late Frank E. and Ethel M. Stephenson Hamilton.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wallingford and was a former member of the Women's Fellowship of the church and a former Red Cross volunteer.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Beverly Danielson of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Gwendolyn Simmons of Wallingford; a brother, the Rev. Dale Hamilton of Lafayette Ind.; two sisters, Ruth Larson of Fowler, Ind. and Ione Sherrill of Hendersonville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 23 S. Main St., Wallingford. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
