NELSON W. SMITH
MERIDEN — Nelson W. Smith, 84, husband of Mary Pecha Smith, of 124 Stoddard Drive, died in his home Saturday morning, Aug. 22, 1998, after a brief illness.
Born in Waterbury, Dec. 17, 1913, a son of the late Walter and Alice Perkins Smith, he was a resident of Meriden for many years. He retired from the Chandler Evans Co. of West Hartford in 1976, after almost 50 years of employment. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, when on March 13, 1945, he single-handedly captured an enemy position and forced others to retreat. His actions earned him the Silver Star Medal. Quoting from the Army citation, "...with complete disregard for personal safety...gallant actions and unswerving devotion to duty, reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States." He was a member of the American Legion. and was an avid golfer, having served as a past president of the Silver City Golf Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, June DeAngelo of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Alice Todd of Torrington, Marie Levesque and her husband Perley, and Ann Collette and her husband Martin, all of Meriden; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Maxwell Smith.
His funeral services will be private, held for the convenience of his family. He will be interred in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home. MADELEINE F. SCHURK
MERIDEN — Madeleine F. Schurk, 93, of 360 Broad St., formerly of 68 Longmeadow Ave., Hamden, died Aug. 22, 1998, at the Miller Memorial Community. She was the wife of the late Walter E. Schurk.
Born in New Haven, Sept. 9, 1904, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Magdalena Rosinus Unger. Mrs. Schurk had resided in Hamden for most of her life, moving to Meriden in 1990. She graduated from Commercial High School in New Haven.
She is survived by two daughters, Sally Quillen of Meriden and Elaine Hammond of Madison; one son, Richard H. Schurk of W. Yarmouth, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Burnham and three brothers, John, Walter and J. Henry Unger.
A private funeral and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Miller Memorial Community, 360 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St.
JOHN F. DEDMAN
SHELTON — John F. "Jack" Dedman, 90, of Shelton, died Aug. 23, 1998, in Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Janet Williams Dedman.
He was the president of the former Derby Savings Bank for 10 years and was employed with the bank for more than 50 years. He was a basketball referee for 28 years and served as the president of Connecticut Division for a year. He also was the past president of the Savings Banks Association of Connecticut for two years.
He is survived by three sons, David A. and James H. Dedman of Orange and Craig P. Dedman of Meriden. He was predeceased by his first wife, Louise Holley Dedman, and a son, Jonathan B. Dedman.
The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, is in charge of arrangements. His funeral will be private and at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Cho of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Orange Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Connecticut Hospice in care of the funeral home.
MARY E. ELEWESKI
SOUTHINGTON – Mary E. Nocera Eleweski, 83, of Barr Street in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at New Britain General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph Eleweski.
Born in Berlin, Sept. 18, 1914, daughter of the late Rosario and Rose (Fortuna) Nocera, she was a resident of Southington for most of her life.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph Jalowiecki of Plantsville and Edward Jalowiecki of Allentown, Pa.; two brothers, William Nocera of Meriden and Alfred Nocera of Berlin; three sisters, Eleanor Gallo of Newington, Angie Marino of Berlin, and Ann Rosetti of Granby; four grandchildren, Jeff of Plantsville, Dorian of Georgia, Lauren of Vermont, Edward of Pennsylvania ; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Carfi.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 9 a.m. at Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
BARBARA A. LANE
MERIDEN — Barbara Ann Lane, 62, of Gwen Road, wife of Charles F. Lane, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 23, 1998, at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington after a brief illness.
She was born in Meriden on June 25, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Kotowski and Helen Wielgosz Kotowski. She was a lifelong resident of Meriden and attended Meriden schools. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. Mrs. Lane was employed at International Silver Co. and later at Pratt and Whitney until her retirement. She was an avid motorcyclist for many years.
Besides her husband, Charles, she is survived by her daughter, Linda Lane of Meriden; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth "Chip" and Peggy Lane of South Meriden; two adored granddaughters, Sara and Stacey Lane; and by several cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She was predeceased by her sister, June Morley; a special cousin, Robert Kotowski; and by a nephew, R. Scott Morley Sr.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., for a 10 a.m. service in the Monsignor Ceppa Chapel of St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.
LONNY A. LANGHAMMER
MERIDEN — Lonny Augusta Langhammer, 94, of 320 Colony St., died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at the Bradley Home Infirmary.
She was born in Steinach, Germany, Jan. 18, 1904, a daughter of the late Rudolf and Frieda Tzschach Langhammer. She had worked at the Unimax Co. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she had been active in the Ladies Aid Society, and was also a member of the YWCA.
She was predeceased by a brother, Eric Langhammer.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Ave., Meriden. The Rev Carl A. Krueger will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call at church one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
HARRY E. OPPELT
SOUTHINGTON — Harry Edward Oppelt, 95, of 3 Darling St., husband of the late Ethel Olland Oppelt, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, in Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington after a brief illness.
Mr. Oppelt was born in Meriden on Dec. 17, 1902, a son of the late Thomas W. and Mable Day Oppelt. He was a resident of Meriden for most of his life. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Meriden. He worked for more than 25 years at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford before his retirement. He was a Mason and a member of the Meridian Lodge 77 A.F. & A.M. in Meriden.
He leaves a sister, Dorothy Brown of Brick, N.J.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Lyon, and a brother, Ernest Oppelt.
Funeral and burial will be private. Arrangements in care of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Contributions in his memory may be made to First United Methodist Church, 15 Pleasant St., Meriden, CT 06450.
ROBERT E. ORENTLICHERMAN
MERIDEN — Friends and relatives of the late Robert E. Orentlicherman are invited to the unveiling of his tombstone at the Meriden Hebrew Cemetery
on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m.
Mrs. Geraldine Orentlicherman, who lives in Florida, and her family, will be present to greet friends.
Mr. Orentlicherman died March 6, 1998.
TOMAS ROBLES
MERIDEN — Tomas Robles, 51, husband of Francisca Cruz Robles of 277 Center St., died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Robles was born Dec. 21, 1946, in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, and was the son of the late Luis and Esperanza (Agosto) Robles. He was employed by the Wallingford Used Parts Co.
Besides his wife, Francisca, he leaves two sons, Edwin J. Robles of Meriden and Daniel Robles of Puerto Rico; two daughters, Maria Nelly Robles-LaFountain of Meriden and Minverva Sisco of West Hartford; four grandchildren, Francesca, Arthur and Taylor LaFountain and Sara Sisco; four brothers, Ladi Robles of New York, Maximo, Dimas and Jose Luis Robles, all of Puerto Rico; and four sisters, Noelia Cruz and Haydee Rivera, both of Meriden, and Maria Rosado and Carmen Robles, both of Puerto Rico. He was predeceased by a brother, Alejandro Robles.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
