John N. Carlin
John N. Carlin of Bradenton, Fla., a former Stamford resident, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at home. He was 82.
He died of a stroke after a battle with diabetes, according to his family.
Born April 18, 1918, in Waterbury, he was a son of the late John Vincent Carlin and Irene Donnelly.
Mr. Carlin grew up in Hamden, graduating from Hillhouse High School in 1936. He graduated from Yale University in 1940. He was a member of the Navy ROTC. He was attending Harvard Law School when he was called to active duty in 1941.
He attended the Naval Intelligence School and was assigned to the coding room at the U.S. Embassy in London as a special naval observer. In 1942, he served as a turret officer on the USS Washington in the North Atlantic. He participated in the third battle of Savo Island, when the USS Washington moved to the South Pacific.
He also served as beach master on Guadalcanal and returned to England as a shipping officer, where he participated in logistical planning for the invasion of Europe. He achieved the rank of lieutenant commander.
After World War II, Mr. Carlin pursued a career in the publishing and advertising business. He worked for McGraw-Hill in New York City as a circulation manager, and later with American Aviation Publications in Washington , D.C. He was vice president of Guy Yolton Advertising in Washington , D.C.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Carlin of Bradenton; three sons, John Michael Carlin of Hyde Park, N.Y., Brian Davey Carlin and Kevin Christopher Carlin, both of Severna Park, Md.; and a brother, Earl P. Carlin of Branford.
A funeral service and burial will take place in the spring at Arlington National Cemetery
in Arlington, Va.
All County Funeral Home, Lake Worth, Fla., is handling arrangements.

Anita Ventrella Lapolla
Anita Ventrella Lapolla, a New Canaan resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. She was 86.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Aug. 16, 1914, in Norwalk, she was a daughter of the late Philip and Filomena Ventrella.
Mrs. Lapolla is survived by her husband, Louis Lapolla Sr. of New Canaan; a son, Jack Lapolla of New Canaan; a sister, Helen Demott of Wilton; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Anthony Ventrella, Peter Ventrella and Robert Ventrella.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 2, 2001 at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at St. Aloysius Church, 40 Maple St., New Canaan.
Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan.
Anthony J. Mennona Sr.
Anthony J. Mennona Sr. of Stamford died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. He was 89.
He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family.
Born May 30, 1911, in New York City, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Angela Maria Mennona.
Mr. Mennona was a retired carpenter, having worked for various construction companies. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Stamford and St. Cecilia Church of Clearwater, Fla. He was a resident of Clearwater for 15 years before moving back to Stamford in 1998.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Victoria Racaniello Mennona of Stamford; a daughter, Victoria Iacuzio of Stamford; a son, Anthony J. Mennona Jr. of Stamford; three sisters, Ann Farina of Lutz, Fla., Theresa Racaniello of Bradenton, Fla., and Millie Passero of Stamford; a brother, Joseph Mennona of Brookfield; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Patrick Mennona.
Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 2, 2001 at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 8:50 a.m. and travel to Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m.
Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Darien.
