Anna Hahn
NEW BRITAIN — Anna (Huse) Hahn, 77, of Cottage Place, wife of Merwin A. Hahn, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998.
Born in New Hartford, she had lived in New Britain since 1946. She was formerly employed at Smith & Klebes in New Britain and was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in New Britain.
Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Anziano of Meriden; a grandson, Russell Robert Anziano, also of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Merwin Hahn, a son-in-law, Robert Anziano, and two brothers, John and Henry Huse.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m. at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Burial will be in Village Cemetery

Laura Leask
FAIRFIELD — Laura Manchester Leask, 83, wife of the late H. Burgess Leask, a longtime resident of Fairfield and Meriden, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, in Cambridge Manor, Fairfield.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield. The Spear Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairfield Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 411, Fairfield, CT 06430.
Elinor H. Bicking
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Elinor H. Bicking, 84, of 245 Wildwood Drive, Lot 162, formerly of 656 E. Center St., Wallingford, Conn., died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at Flagler Hospital, West Campus, in St. Augustine, Fla. She was the wife of the late Henry Bicking Sr.
Born in New Haven, Conn., Aug. 9, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Harriet Brache Dammling. Until her retirement, she worked in the credit department for Sears Roebuck in Hamden. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Wallingford.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Scanlon of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Phyllis Montondo of St. Augustine, Fla.; a brother, Frank Dammling of Hamden; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Claflin.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford, with the Rev. Robert Hass of the Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park, Hamden.
Genevieve Jiantonio
MERIDEN — Genevieve (Zakrzewski) Jiantonio, 72, formerly of New Britain, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at New Britain General Hospital.
Born in New Britain, she was a city resident for most of her life before moving to Meriden in 1990.
She leaves her loving daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Charles Yoerkie of Newington; a granddaughter, Rhonda Woodill of West Barnstable, Mass.; her devoted fiance, Ted Kozak of Meriden; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter and Dorothy Zakrzewski of Plainville and Paul and Irene Zakrzewski of Southington; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sophie and Stanley Bialobrzski of Plainville and Ann and Everett Bleau of Southington; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Zakrzewski.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Church of the Holy Spirit, Newington. Interment will be in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington. Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Newington Memorial. Rosalie Vosburgh
CHESHIRE — Mrs. Rosalie (Morin) Vosburgh, 89, of 140 Cook Hill Road, formerly of Wolf Hill Road, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, 1998, at the Elim Park Baptist Home. She was the widow of Vernon R. Vosburgh.
Mrs. Vosburgh was born in Old Town, Maine, April 19, 1909, a daughter of the late Dennis and Wilhelmina (Label) Morin. She lived in Cheshire for more than 50 years before moving to Plantsville and then back to Cheshire. She was a communicant of St. Aloysius Church, Plantsville, and was a member of the Calendar House of Southington. For many years, she was employed by the Rite Box Co. in Hamden until her retirement.
She leaves a son, Vernon Vosburgh of Cheshire; a daughter, Beverly Murray of Hamden; two sisters, Pauline Schaffer of Plantsville and Marie Norton of Bangor, Maine; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Hillside Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Houston
A memorial service to honor the memories of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Houston will be held Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., corner of East Main Street and Liberty Street, Meriden. The Rev. Allan House O'Neil and the Rev. Robert J. Broesler will be officiating.
The Houstons are survived by a son, Attorney Frederick W. Houston, and his wife, Eileen, and their children, Clay K. and Justin C. Houston; a daughter, Molly H. Savard, and her husband, Edward, and their sons, Nicholas H. and Turner H. Savard. Robert E. Shortelle
SHERMAN — Robert "Bob" E. Shortelle, 75, died Oct. 16, 1998. He was at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Rose Nasczniec Shortelle.
Born July 28, 1923, in Windsor, Vt., he was the son of the late James William Shortelle and Helen Fitzgerald Shortelle. At the age of 17 he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy in what was called a "kiddie cruise." While on active duty, he secured leave and returned to his native Wallingford to receive his diploma from Lyman Hall High School. Assigned to a PBY squadron at the Kaneohe Bay Naval base in December 1941, he was one of the youngest survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor marking the beginning of World War II. A dedicated advocate of the nation's "stay alert" defenses, he served as a spokesman and educator addressing students and civic groups recalling that "Day of Infamy." His naval career spanned four years of which he took part in the Battle of Midway and was on flight duty in the battle off Guadalcanal before receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy at the age of 21. He graduated from Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., in 1949 and worked for the U.S. Labor Department as an investigator. Out of his strong commitment to justice, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1951 and served as a Special Agent in Tennessee, Pennsylvania , New York City and Connecticut. In addition to investigative work, he found time throughout his career to lecture at law enforcement institutions around the country. He retired from the FBI at age 50 in 1975. He later served as director, Special Investigation Division, ITT-Hartford in Farmington before his retirement in 1984.
A resident of Holmes Beach, Fla., he and Rose spent their summers in Connecticut with family. He was a member of the National Association of Pearl Harbor Survivors and established the Connecticut Nutmeg Chapter, where he served as president and state chairman. He is a member of the Kaneohe Klippers, VFW Post #10141 in Bradenton, Fla., American Legion and the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Gulf Coast Chapter.
In addition to his wife, he leaves six daughters, Linda and son-in-law, Brian Ross, of Minneapolis, Minn., Sharon and son-in-law, William Gero, of Newark Valley, N.Y., Gail and son-in-law, James Meehan, of New Milford, Faythe and son-in-law, Richard Valenzon, of New Fairfield, Diane Shortelle of Milford, Robin and son-in-law, Andrew Galon, of Colchester; six grandchildren, a brother, James William Shortelle Jr., and sister-in-law, Louise Shortelle, of Wallingford; a sister, Natalie Smith of Fort Myers, Fla.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Shortelle, wife of predeceased brother, Thomas Shortelle; nine nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Church, Route 37 and 39 in Sherman. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery
with military honors on Dec. 7, 1998, in honor of Pearl Harbor Day. Contributions in memory of Robert Shortelle may be made to the New Milford V.N.A. Hospice, 68 Park Lane Road, New Milford, CT 06776.
Marie E. Bartlett
WALLINGFORD — Marie Emilie Bartlett, 90, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center. She was the wife of the late David Bartlett.
She was born in Meriden, May 21, 1908, a daughter of the late Richard F. and Emilie Marie Diel Dossin. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Meriden.
She is survived by four nieces and nephews, Diane Fulton of Guilford, Daniel Simons of Guilford, Elizabeth Frolich of Maine and Florida and Richard Anderson of Southington; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth Simons, Viola Anderson and Elsie Whitney.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Meredith Jeffers will officiate. Relatives and friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Helen P. Gaj
MERIDEN — Helen Pauline (Zajac) Gaj, 76, of 76 Barberry Lane, beloved wife of Charles J. Gaj, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, at MidState Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1922, in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Brys) Zajac. She was a lifelong resident of Meriden, a graduate of St. Stanislaus School and of Meriden High School. Mrs. Gaj was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and a member of the Meriden Council of Catholic Women. Mrs. Gaj was a city bowling champion in 1943-44.
A devoted wife of 51 years, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, in addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Doris (Dot) Gaj and Richard and Luanne Gaj, all of Meriden; five grandchildren, Julie, Michael, Jeremy, Erica and Jessica; one great-granddaughter, Marissa; seven brothers, Henry, Benjamin, Theodore, Frank, Charles, Alfred and Edward Zajac, all of Meriden. Mrs. Gaj is also survived by several sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley Zajac and Walter Zajac; a sister, Emily Zajac and a grandson, Jonathan Gaj.
The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, from the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. John J. Kazersky Sr.
EAST HARTFORD — John J. Kazersky Sr., 57, of East Hartford, beloved husband to Virginia (Bosse) Kazersky, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at Hartford Hospital.
Born in Meriden, he was the son of Helen (Wisniewski) Kazersky of Yalesville and the late John Kazersky. He lived in Berlin for many years. He graduated from Wilcox Technical School and was a member of the East Berlin Fire Department for years. He lived in East Hartford for the last 11 years. He was employed by Newfield Construction Co., Hartford. One of the major projects John was instrumental on was the reconstruction of St. John's Episcopal Church, West Hartford, after the fire in October of 1992.
Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Kazersky leaves a son and his fiancee, John J. Kazersky Jr. and Margo Larsen of Niantic; a daughter, Lisa Kazersky of Niantic; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Michelle and Paul Lazarowski of Virginia Beach, Va., and Christine and Alan Levesque of East Hartford; three grandchildren, Nicole and Sean Lazarowski, both of Virginia Beach, Va., Ryan Levesque of East Hartford; his brother, Joseph Kazersky of Cheshire; and a sister, Bette Lovato of Torrington. He also leaves many other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, with the Rev. Joseph Pace officiating. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. Memorial contributions may be made to Palliative Care Unit, Hartford Hospital; the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, Hartford Hospital; St. John's Episcopal Church, West Hartford; or to the American Cancer Society.
