Joseph Calabrese
ENCINO, Calif. — Joseph Calabrese, 79, formerly of Wallingford, Conn., died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, in California. He was the husband of Verna Calabrese.
Born Dec. 16, 1919 in Comparni, Italy, a son of the late Anthony and Cattolica Calabrese, he came to the United States in 1937 and had been a longtime resident of Wallingford before moving to Encino several years ago. He had been employed by the International Silver Co. in Wallingford for many years until his retirement 20 years ago. He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Larry Wyner; his granddaughter, Lisa Wyner, all in California; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Edmund Hudon and Concetta and John Marchi, all of Wallingford; a brother, Michael Calabrese of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may attend graveside funeral services Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. John Cemetery.
Margaret L. Doherty
MERIDEN — Margaret L. Doherty of 24 Godek Hill Road, South Meriden, formerly of 60 Conwell Road, wife of the late Stanley J. Doherty II, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, in MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Medford, Mass., Dec. 31, 1925, the daughter of the late James T. and Margaret Fitzpatrick O'Connell. She had been a resident of Meriden for the past 40 years. She retired as an accountant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation in 1984 after 15 years of employment. She was also the librarian of the Holy Angels Parochial School in the mid-1960s. She was a member of the Society of Governmental Accountants. She was a parishioner of Holy Angels Church and was active with the LaSallette Fathers of Cheshire.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley J. and Eileen Doherty III of Hingham, Mass.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Siobhan C. Doherty-Rogers and Peter Rogers of Clinton and Deirdre M. and Marc Papandrea of Meriden; nine grandchildren, Kevin, Brendan, Aidan and Brian Doherty; Justin, Colleen and Larkin Rogers; and Drew and Emma Papandrea; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, from the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden, the time to be announced in Thursday's Record-Journal. She will be interred with her husband in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Michael F. Gianotti Sr.
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Michael F. Gianotti Sr., 60, of Squantum Drive, formerly of Milford and Wallingford, Conn., died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, in the Newport Hospital, Newport, R.I. He was the husband of Jacqueline Kortak Gianotti.
Born in Wallingford, Jan. 13, 1938, he was the son of Margaret Pranzetelli Gianotti of Middletown, R.I. and the late Peter R. Gianotti. He was a Milford resident for 29 years before moving to Middletown, R.I. three years ago. He was a graduate of the Connecticut School of Electronics and was employed by the Custom Navigation Co. in Barrington, R.I. for several years. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Milford and had served an enlistment in the U.S. Air Force.
Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Gianotti is survived by two daughters, Kim Gianotti of Colorado and Michelle M. Gianotti of Middletown, R.I.; four sons and a daughter-in-law, David M. Gianotti of Middletown, R.I., Bruce P. Gianotti of Milford, Michael F. Gianotti Jr. and Heike Gianotti of Hamden and Gary C. Gianotti of Milford; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Jacqueline Gianotti of Wallingford; two granddaughters, April and Autumn; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:45 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Leigh D. Greenbacker
PUTNEY, Vt. — Leigh D. Greenbacker, 78, of Route 5, died early Tuesday morning at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Greenbacker was born in Meriden, Conn., on Jan. 2, 1920, the daughter of Raymond and Gladys (Eyre) Jones. She was raised in Meriden, where she attended local schools. A resident of Meriden most of her life, she moved to Putney with her husband in 1977. The Greenbackers owned and operated the Wood Lot, specializing in woodworking, antiques and farm collectibles. Previously, she had been employed at Putney Paper in Putney. Of her hobbies and interests, she especially enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking and canning. On Jan. 1, 1940 in New Boston, Mass., she was married to Norman R. Greenbacker, who survives.
Besides her husband of 58 years, she leaves a son, Dale Greenbacker of Meriden; a daughter, Rae Lynn Farkas of Wallingford, Conn.; a sister, Barbara Schott of Leesburg, Fla.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Jones, formerly of Leesburg, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 11 Terrace St., Brattleboro, Vt., with the Rev. Janet Langdon, pastor of the Putney Federated Church, officiating. Burial with committal services will follow in the family lot in Mount Pleasant Cemetery
in Putney. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Greenbacker's name may be made to Putney Cares, P.O. Box 108, Putney, Vt. 05346. Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
Robert O. Peterson
SOUTHINGTON — Robert O. Peterson, 79, of 57 Village Road, died after a brave battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Jean (Campbell) Peterson for 51 years.
Born on Nov. 20, 1918 in Menomonee, Wis., the son of the late Charles and Ethel (Crouch) Peterson, he had resided in Gardner, Mass., before settling in Southington. He graduated from Gardner High School in 1936 and was a graduate of Bryant & Stratt Business School in Boston, Mass. Mr. Peterson was a veteran of World War II. He was a first lieutenant and pilot in the 94th U.S. Air Force Division. He flew in the African and European Theaters from 1942 to 1945, receiving an air medal with clusters. He retired from Pratt & Whitney in Southington. He was active in Southington Community Theater for many years. For the past eight years, he had been involved with Habitat for Humanity in Imackolee, Fla.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Christina P. Cooper and son-in-law, Dr. David Cooper of East Lansing, Mich.; a son, R. Campbell Peterson and daughter-in-law, Bonnie (Height) Peterson, of Plantsville; three grandchildren, Krista, Julie and John Peterson; a sister-in-law, Barbara Miles of New York; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Edith and John Aher of Massachusetts; a sister-in-law, Isabelle Peterson of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Michigan. He was predeceased by two brothers, William of Wisconsin and Howard of Massachusetts and a sister, Nettie of Michigan.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 North Main St., Southington to St. Dominic Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be with military honors in St. Thomas Cemetery. Loyal L. Smith
SHAVERTOWN, Pa. — Loyal L. Smith, 89, of Shavertown, Pa., formerly of Plainville, Conn., died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998. He was the husband of Mary (Fleming) Smith.
He was born in Plainville, Sept. 13, 1909, the son of the late Pearl and Carrie (Lauridsen) Smith. He was a 1926 graduate of Bristol High School and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1930 from the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church of Plainville. He was employed by General Electric for many years and co-founded the Plainville Special Tool Co. on North Washington Street, Plainville, in 1952. He was a long time member and past president of the Rotary Club of Plainville and was a two-time recipient of the Rotary's Paul Harris Award. He was also a member of the Frederick Lodge No. 14 A.F. & A.M. of Plainville.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Russell E. and Patricia B. Smith of Shavertown; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy S. and Edward J. Wrona of Wallingford, Conn.; six grandchildren, Cara (Smith) Shackelford, Michael Loyal Smith, Maureen (Smith) Doctoroff, Samuel Smith and Peter and Kathleen Wrona; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Rachel (Smith) Schwab, and two brothers, Vinton and Russell Smith.
Calling hours are Thursday evening, 5 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church, 130 W. Main St., Plainville. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Plainville. Charles E. Blair
MERIDEN — Charles E. Blair, 68, of 17 Water St., died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, in the Westfield Care and Rehab Center after a brief illness.
He was born in Hartford, Vt., Feb. 5, 1930, a son of the late Edmund B. and Viola Fallansbee Bergeron Blair. He was a resident of Meriden for the past 37 years. He had worked in various printing businesses in the Meriden area, including Curtis Way and Domino Press. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Rock and Minerals Club. He was a familiar voice on local CB radios, going by the handle "Charlie".
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and James Dwyer of Manchester, N.H.; two grandsons, Joshua and Curtis Dwyer; four brothers, David, George, John and Henry Bergeron; a sister, Suzanne Westcott, all of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. in the Hubbard Chapel in Walnut Grove Cemetery, where he will be interred with military honors. Relatives and friends may visit with his family in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden, on Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Avis Crook
WARWICK, R.I. — Avis Gould Crook, 93, formerly of West Bay Manor, West Shore Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Harborside Healthcare Greenwood, Warwick, R.I. She was the wife of the late Wilbur Gould and C. Raymond Crook.
Born in North Smithfield, Dec. 30, 1904, she was a daughter of the late Amos and Florence (Inman) Lunn.
She had lived in Uxbridge, Mass., for 49 years before moving to Warwick in 1990.
She was a 70-year member of the Uxbridge Chapter DAR and was the oldest member, in length of service, of that chapter.
She previously attended the Uxbridge Unitarian Church.
She is survived by two sons, Ervin W. Crook of Wallingford, Conn., and Francis R. Crook of Warwick; three sisters, Ila Middleton of Slatersville, Mildred Rennie of Blackstone, Mass., and Ruby Johnson of Pascoag; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Florence Seagrave and Earl Lunn.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. in Slatersville Congregational Church on the Common, Green and School streets, Slatersville.
Burial will be in Acotes Hill Cemetery, Chepachet.
Frank D. D'Allesantro
ST. MAARTEN, Netherlands Antilles. — Frank Dixon D'Allesantro, 60, of St. Maarten, died Friday Oct. 9, 1998, suddenly at his home.
He was born in Springfield, Mass., son of the late Frank and Frances (Onofrio) D'Allesantro.
For the last seven years, he worked at the Pelican Resort and Casino in St. Maarten.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Janice M. (Titone) D'Allesantro of St. Maarten; and several cousins in Meriden and New Haven.
The funeral will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Introvigne Funeral Home, Inc., 51 E. Main St., Stafford Springs, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Edward Church, High Street, Stafford Springs. Burial will be in St. Edward Cemetery
with military honors.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
