JOSE P. VELEZ
MERIDEN — Jose P. "Mitch" Velez, 21, of 288 Hanover St., died on Monday, Oct. 5, 1998.
Born in Meriden on July 3, 1977, he was the son of Jose Rodriguez and Elaine Cruz of Meriden. Mr. Velez attended local schools and was employed by Logan Steel Co. in Meriden. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Erica and Alisha Rivera, both of Meriden; his paternal grandmother, Delia Rodriguez of Willimantic, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Ana Cruz.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
PHYLLIS M. ARPAIA
NEW HAVEN — Phyllis M. Naples Arpaia, 95, formerly of 41 Judson Ave., died Monday, Oct. 5, in Branford Hills Health Care after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Jehovah's Witnesses pioneer Charles W. Arpaia Sr.
Mrs. Arpaia was born Jan. 10, 1903, in Meriden, daughter of the late Ciacomo and Carmela Napolitano (Naples).
She leaves two sons, Vincent C. Arpaia of Coral Springs, Fla., and James Arpaia of Wallingford; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles W. Arpaia Jr., three brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven, and are invited to attend services at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
ANNE BEAULIEU
NEW BRITAIN — Anne Beaulieu, 88, wife of the late Liguori Beaulieu, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at New Britain General Hospital after a short illness.
Born Aug. 7, 1910, in New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Hector and Denise (Albert) Daigle. She was raised and educated in Baker Brook, New Brunswick, and later was employed as a school teacher in Canada and Maine. Mrs. Beaulieu was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Meriden, and a member of the Daughters of Isabella and of the St. Anne Society.
She is survived by a daughter, Claire Thibeault of Newport, R.I.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gerald and Pat Beaulieu of Hollywood, Fla., Guildo Beaulieu of Berlin, and Reno and Eva Beaulieu of New Britain; six grandchildren, Michael, Kevin, Robin, Craig and Keith and Michelle; five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Emily, Dominique, Devon and Anthony; and one sister-in-law, Jeanne Daigle. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, from the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 22 Goodwill Ave., Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the funeral home. GEORGE E. GREATOREX
WATERBURY — George Edward Greatorex, 57, of 68 Kaynor Drive, died Monday Oct. 5, 1998, at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was the husband of Barbara I. (Lesse) Greatorex.
He was born in Waterbury, Nov. 5, 1940. He was employed at Romatic Manufacturing of Southbury for 14 years until he took ill in June. Before that, he worked for Eyelet Specialty of Wallingford for 23 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters; one brother; two sisters; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Chase Parkway Memorial/the Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, with the Rev. Michael J. Ciba officiating. Burial will be in New Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
J. LAWRENCE NILAND
MERIDEN — J. Lawrence "Larry" Niland, 88, formerly of 28 Maple St. and more recently of Elliott Drive, Milldale, husband of 62 years to the late Adelaide (Emerling) Niland, who passed away on Oct. 15, 1997, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at Coccomo Memorial Health Care Center after a brief illness.
Born Oct. 31, 1909, in Meriden, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Annie (Martin) Niland, his father being the owner of the J.J. Niland Glass Co. in Meriden. He was a resident of Meriden and a graduate of Meriden High School. Mr. Niland was employed by Automotive Sales in Meriden for over 32 years and Insilco for 10 years, retiring in 1977. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. His happiest and proudest moments were when he gathered with his "Irish Clan." His family were his friends and friends became family. Beloved by all, Larry will long be remembered for his kind and gentle ways and his love will live on through his 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Joseph Murphy of Southington; four sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Jeanette Niland of Milldale, Raymond and Evelyn Niland of Montgomery, Ala., Edward and Cheri Niland of Wallingford, and William and Rosemary Niland of Southington; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. The youngest son of 14 brothers and sisters, he also leaves a multitude of nieces and nephews, his "Irish Clan," as he so proudly spoke of them.

EVELYN M. SANTILLO
HAMDEN — Mrs. Evelyn M. Parker Santillo, 83, formerly of Pine Rock Avenue, and Fox Glen, Cromwell, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in the Miller Memorial Community, Meriden, after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Salvatore J. Santillo.
Born April 2, 1915, in Holyoke, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rachel Overton Parker and was a resident of Hamden for 20 years, moving to Cromwell in 1969. She was a former communicant of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty-Lou Barile and her husband, Joseph Barile Jr., of Wallingford; a son, Richard Santillo and his wife, Donna Santillo, of Wallingford; four grandchildren and three great-grandchilidren. She was predeceased by a sister, Edith E. Zemina.
Funeral from the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Friday, Oct. 9, at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Hamden. Burial will take place in Beaverdale Memorial Park, Hamden. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the funeral home. JAMES SHERIDAN
KILLINGWORTH — James P. Sheridan, 72, of 550 Route 81, Killingworth, husband of Carolyn (Lange) Sheridan, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Middlesex Hospital.
Born in Clarkstown, N.Y., he was the son of the late Francis P. and Mary (Garrabrant) Sheridan. Mr. Sheridan was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. He was a resident of Killingworth for 36 years and was a member of the First Congregational Church, Deep River. He was an artist, craftsman and avid hunter who loved the outdoors and his tractor.
Besides his wife of 34 years, he is survived by one son and his wife, Jonathan and Susan Melzmuf of Middlefield; one daughter and her husband, Alta and Stanley Machnik of Clinton; one brother and his wife, Phillip and Linda Sheridan of Pearl River, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Mallory Melzmuf, Christian Machnik and Joshua Machnik; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Sheridan was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Sheridan and John Sheridan; and his beloved granddaughter, Erin Melzmuf.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown. The Rev. Timothy Haut, minister of the First Congregational Church, Deep River, will officiate and interment will be in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. JUANITA M. TESTER
WALLINGFORD — Juanita M. Siniscalco Tester, 77, of Leigus Road, Wallingford, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at MidState Medical Center. She was the beloved wife of William E. Tester Sr.
Mrs. Tester was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Meriden, a daughter of the late Louis and Catherine Hamilton Siniscalco, and had been a Wallingford resident for the past 53 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Anita M. Tester of Lyndonville, Vt.; her two sons and a daughter-in-law, William E. Tester Jr. and Susan Tester of Barton, Vt., and Keith A. Tester of Wallingford; her five grandchildren, Shawn, Kelley, Christopher, Aaron and Nicholas Tester; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Moody, and her brother, Dominick Siniscalco.
Her family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9. The funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.
Frank W. Dunn Jr.
SOUTHINGTON — Frank W. Dunn Jr., 69, of 855 Mount Vernon Road, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at home. He was the husband of Priscilla (Bouchard) Dunn.
Born June 7, 1929, in Waterbury, son of the late Frank W. Dunn Sr. and Clara (Benjamin) Dunn. He retired six years ago from Eyelets for Industries in Thomaston, where he worked for 28 years. Previously, he worked for Scovill in Waterbury. He had served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve. Mr. Dunn was a member of the Southington Board of Fire Commissioners for five years and was a Southington volunteer firefighter for 15 years with Company 3 in Marion. He was a member of the Southington Elks Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Kevin M. Dunn of Plantsville; a daughter, Kelly Dunn-Cavaliere of Stratford; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Dan Shannon of Southbury; two granddaughters, Erica Lynn and Lindsey Priscilla Cavaliere; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. Thursday from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.
Wyman Goss
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Wyman Goss, 88, of Dalton Avenue, Pittsfield, Mass. died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Meriden, Conn., following a long illness. He was predeceased in 1983 by his wife of 54 years, Lois Boies Goss.
Born in Lewiston, Maine, April 23, 1910, he was the son of the late John B. and Alice Wyman Goss. During World War II, he worked with all branches of the military in introducing plastics for the war effort. He received a certificate of accommodation from Adm. Hyman G. Rickover of the U.S. Navy for developing a flame-retardant, high-impact circuit-breaker insulation material. He received an award from the American Standards Association for working with it on standardization of plastics material and he also received a Naval Ordnance Development Award from the Naval Ordnance Department, Bureau of Ships. In 1951, he received General Electric's Coffin Award for developing rubber phenolic molding composition. He was responsible for more than 500 patents for GE. He lectured extensively throughout the country and Canada on the use of plastics in numerous applications and he received accommodation for his services from the American Management Association for his contribution to their seminars.
He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Julia and William Hinman of South Carolina and Beverly and Ronald Tooley of Southington, Conn., with whom he recently made his home; three grandchildren, Bonita J. Moore of South Carolina, Bryan R. Tooley and Teri Lyn Burke of California; and seven great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating the life of Wyman Goss will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Southington with the Rev. David Strosahl and Rev. Paul Smith of Pittsfield, Mass., officiating. The family will meet with friends at a reception following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
