RAKSMEY S. SAM-WALKER
WALLINGFORD — Raksmey Saing Sam-Walker, 19, daughter of Robert W. and Diane M. Walker of Grantham Road, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Raksmey was born in Cambodia, Sept. 10, 1979, and came to the United States in 1981 when she and her family were sponsored by the Zion Lutheran Church in Bristol, where she lived until moving to Wallingford 13 years ago. She had played for the Yalesville Challengers Division of the Wallingford Little League for several years. She was a member of the Community Bible Church in North Haven.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her natural mother, Yenthay Saing of Providence, R.I.; her two sisters, Laura Saing of Providence, and Sharon Malone; and her husband, Michael Malone of Wallingford; three brothers, Ronald Ingraham and his wife, Jean of Coral Gables, Fla., Eric Ingraham of Wallingford, and Joseph Terranova and his wife, Lisa of Yalesville; her grandparents, Ella Walker of North Haven and Theresa and William Zimmerman of Nashua, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Community Bible Church, 36 Sackett Point Road, North Haven. ROSE M. SIMONE
SOUTHINGTON — Rose M. Simone, 87, of 43 Delahunty Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Southington Care Center. She was the wife of Michael J. Simone.
Born in Southington, the daughter of the late Gaetano and Bridget (Menella) Tedesco. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church and a former member of the Altar Society. She belonged to the Calendar House.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Joyce S. Manca of Wolcott; three granddaughters, Marybeth and her husband, Joseph DeLeo, Johnna Manca and Christina Manca; a great-granddaughter, Emilia DeLeo; two sisters, Lucy Tedesco and Julia Fasulo, both of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, E. John Manca.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., to St. Thomas Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. MADELINE G. BURR
MERIDEN — Madeline G. Burr, 84, of 101 Lambert Ave., wife of Dwight Burr, died at home suddenly on Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
Born on Oct. 17, 1913, in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Henry A. and Mary E. (Dorsey) Gilmore. She had been a lifelong resident of Meriden. She was a graduate of Meriden High School and Central Connecticut State University in New Britain and attended teachers college at Columbia University. Mrs. Burr was employed by the city of Middletown as a school teacher retiring 22 years ago. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, a member of the National Educational Association and of the American Association of University Women in Meriden.
Besides her husband, Dwight, she is survived by four sisters, Mary Hirsch of Shrewsbury, Mass., Barbara Otto of Northampton, Mass., Phyllis Bartlett of Meriden and Doris Montefiore of Westbrook; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Burr was predeceased by two brothers, Ray and George Gilmore.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. in Newtown Village Cemetery, Newtown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to Mass.
RUSSELL CURTIS SR.
ESSEX — Russell G. Curtis Sr., 95, of 319 Essex Meadows, formerly of Dogwood Lane, Madison, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at Essex Meadows Health Care Center, Essex. He was the husband of Alva (Berg) Curtis.
He was born in New York City, Dec. 19, 1902, a son of the late Osborn M. and Minnie (Goe) Curtis. He was a graduate of Antioch College and a management consultant for Albert Ramond and Associates in Chicago until he retired 25 years ago. He lived in Madison for 26 years before moving to Essex 10 years ago. He was a member of the Madison Winter Club and a former chairman and member of the Madison Board of Police Commissioners.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Russell G. Curtis Jr. of Madison and William E. Curtis of New York; two grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Strohm Curtis.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Madison Wednesday at 11 a.m. Contributions may be made to the Scranton Library, 801 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443. The Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison is in charge of arrangements.
JAMES J. GAGNE
MERIDEN — James J. Gagne, 38, of Webb St., South Meriden, passed away suddenly Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, in the Mid State Medical Center.
Born in Meriden, Oct. 16, 1959, beloved son of Fred and Dolores Dennis Gagne of Meriden, he was a Wallingford resident before moving to South Meriden.
Besides his parents, he was the beloved brother of Cynthia and Tony Rusate of Wallingford and Gerald Hester of South Meriden. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Rica, Dominic, Jennifer, Mary Kay, Anthony, Christopher and David; his great-nephew, Christopher K.; his foster sister, Valerie; his grandmother; and his aunts and uncles.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville, Wednesday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Yalesville Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church of a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.
ROBERT W. GLEASON SR.
WALES, Mass. — Robert W. Gleason Sr., 66 of Birch Lane, passed away at home, Oct. 4, 1998, with his family and friends by his side. He was the beloved husband of 36 years of Lois Manchester Gleason.
Mr. Gleason was born in Meriden, Conn., May 24, 1932, a son of the late Emma Skoczon Gleason Mandell and William B. Gleason. He had resided in Wales since September 1995, having previously resided in Wallingford, Deep River and Caribou, Maine. He was a graduate of Portland High School, Portland, Conn. He had been a paratrooper in the U.S. army. He had been employed at New Era Printing in Deep River, Conn., for 22 years and had previously been employed by City Printing in New Haven. He later owned Gleason's/Vickie G's Convenience Store in Caribou, Maine. He was most famous for having stolen a pig and hiding it in his stepfather's garage at age 16.
Besides his beloved wife, Lois, he is survived by his three daughters, Harmony Gleason-Doolittle of Enfield, Conn., Victoria Gleason-Gregoire of Stafford Springs and Kathleen Fortin of Enfield; his two sons, Robert Gleason Jr. of Stafford Springs, Conn., and William Gleason of Manchester, Conn.; his three sisters, Janice Sparico of Wallingford, Patricia Anderson of Bradford, N.H., and Ellen Cornell of Meriden; his brother, Daniel Gleason of Florida; his five grandchildren, Wayne Gregoire Jr., Stefanie Gregoire, Nicholas Fortin, Cole Fortin and Jennifer Doolittle; and many nieces and nephews. He was loved by all.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville, Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon from the Yalesville Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment will be private. HARRY Johnson JR.
MERIDEN — Harry F. Johnson Jr., 49, of 390 Center St., husband of Doris (Lorenzana) Johnson, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at home.
Born in Hanover, Va., he was the son of Emily (Fountain) Johnson of Ahoskie, N.C., and Harry C. Johnson Sr. and lived in Middletown and then in Meriden for the past 23 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Harry C. Johnson Jr. of Meriden; two stepsons, Maurice Fuchs and Nathaniel D. Washington , both of Meriden; four stepdaughters, Maria C. Johnson, Cheryl, Doreen and Jacqueline Fuchs, all of Meriden; a mother-in-law, Isabel Lorenzana of Meriden; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; two brothers, John M. Fountain and his wife, Annette, of Middletown, Daniel E. Johnson and his wife, Wendy, of Ahoskie, N.C.; two sisters, Doris A Rankins and her husband, James, of Norfolk, Va., and Pearl E. McFadden of Griffin, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by two daughters, Melinda Fuchs and Jessica Johnson; two grandmothers, Patricia Johnson and Martha Fountain; and one brother, James A. Johnson.
A graveside service will be held at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Meriden on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and a memorial service will follow at noon at the Peoples Christian Church, Middletown. There are no calling hours. The Doolittle Funeral Service, Inc., 14 Old Church St., Middletown is in charge of arrangements.
ROSE MUCCI
MERIDEN — Rose Mucci, 64, wife of the late Thomas L. Mucci, of 140 Grove St., died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in the Olympus Health Care Center in Meriden after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden, Nov. 25, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Angelo and Florence Marcantonio Chiaro. She was a life long resident. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, but often attended Mass at St. Mary Church. She very much enjoyed playing bingo.
She is survived by two nephews, Jeffrey and Scott Chiaro of Meriden; a niece, Tracy Chiaro, also of Meriden; and several other nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 West Main St., Meriden, will be privately held at the convenience of her family.
ALBERT N. TROY
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Rabbi Albert N. Troy, 86, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Northridge Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. after a brief illness. He served in Meriden, Conn., as Rabbi of Temple B'nai Abraham from 1951 to 1977.
He was born in 1912 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He received a bachelor's degree from Yeshiva University in 1934. During his college days, he acquired a reputation as a talented basketball player and a semi-pro baseball pitcher. In the late 1930's, he entered the Jewish Institute of Religion (J.I.R.) in New York City, whose head was Dr. Stephen S. Wise. He was ordained a rabbi in the early 1940's and received a Masters of Hebrew Letters (M.H.L.). He received the degree of Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He has been a member of the Rabbinical Assembly of America for 45 years, a member of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami and the Broward Association of Rabbis.
Before coming to Meriden in 1951, he served as Spiritual Leader of a Synagogue in Aurora, Ill. While in Aurora, he was granted a leave of absence to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Texas and in Germany, arriving there at the end of World War II. Most of his work there was devoted to helping displaced persons with their problems and their needs. He organized an orphan's home for children and started a dining hall in Bad Kissengen, Germany. He visited D.P. camps with packages and medication for the sick and gave support to many people in very stressful times.
While at Temple B'nai Abraham, he instituted a lecture series each year that brought such prominent people to Meriden as the late Eleanor Roosevelt, the late Sen. Abe Ribicoff, Max Lerner, Gov. McClelland of Maryland, Quentin Reynolds and numerous others. He also wrote a column for several Anglo-Jewish periodicals. His eloquent sermons will long be remembered at Temple B'nai Abraham as well as the sermons and eulogies delivered before non-Jewish congregations.
He retired in 1977 and he and his late wife, Roselyn, moved to Pompano Beach. Though retired, he could not be idle for very long. He served as part-time rabbi at a number of synagogues in Florida including Sunrise Jewish Center for six years, Temple Beth Israel and Temple Sholom in Pompano Beach.
He is survived by a sister, Rosalyn Lipman of Meriden; three daughters, Deborah Berlinger, Naomi Biton of Israel and Melanie Jordan of Roselindale, Mass.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, all in Israel.
Funeral services will be held Oct. 7 at Sunrise Chapel in Pompano Beach. A period of mourning will be observed after sundown on Oct. 13, 14 and 15, at the home of Rosalyn and Bruin Lipman, 59 Butternut Drive in Meriden.
